Letters and assurances, promises and vows, oaths he could rely upon forged, and then the inevitable. He’d marched along the Fangs caverns, striking along the familiar portal, ignoring the avenues, the corridors, of other measures and strife (saved for another time, another place, another moment when his strength could truly prevail), waiting for the appropriate hour. And while winds howled, while ice and snow built, while the flicker of ghosts, of memories, thought to twist and turn along his spine, the noon hour arrived.

And with it, came Aisha.

He permitted an open, genuine smile at her appearance, distinctly untroubled, unvexed, rather than diving headfirst into melancholic efforts. “The Fangs,” the Sword offered, in a generous head tilt, encouraging her to glance and look around, at the glacial wonders, at the spectral expanse. “These can be explored later.” Far, far later; when the threats were slightly diminished, and he could forge onward without the notion of ursurs or something else immediately bombarding them. “We can start at the Citadel?” It would be a walk through tundras, through chilling marches, through voids and ranges that took him back to a world long since gone – perished and destroyed – but nestled in his heart, in his mind. A pause in movement and motion as he neared the open cave, with the stark, vivid ivory behind him, with the parallel reaches of endless, eternal ice, awaiting either agreement or argument.

and now we're breeding a feeling of animosity
The morning had brought with it a tinge of anxiety; the same creeping feeling she'd felt when she'd first ventured to Torchline for Longnight, the same feeling when she'd been about to return. Anticipation for what was on the other side. Knowing she'd made the choice to go, and was responsible for whatever happened because of it. It brought butterflies to her stomach, wondering if she'd brought enough furs, enough water in her skins, enough fruit for the trip from the portal to the citadel.

That being said, she had a rather large pack at her back, never one to be unprepared. She'd given Oliver a kiss on the cheek goodbye, and headed for the spire, coming upon it only ten or so minutes before the sun was at it's peak in the sky. She waited, relaxed, then stepped through, the familiar feeling of magic/ or it's scientific counter part pulled at her blood and ripple through her muscles.

In a moment she was on the other side, and a cold breeze whipped at her nose. She was taken aback by it at first, but once she realized that her layers were serving their purpose, she relaxed and opened her eyes to take it all in. To someone who had seen cavernous mountains and icy spires before this might not be so splendorous. To Aisha, it was like a crystal creature, it could be nothing less than the spine of a dragon, so white and sharp and elegantly brutal.

And then her golden eyes came to rest on Deimos, and a smile spread across her face, visible in her eyes as her mouth was buried in a scarf. He didn't give much in the way of greetings, he jumped right into the tour. Seemed about right, Aisha snorted as she walked forward to stand closer, "Hello Aisha, good to see you again," she grumbled in a low mockery of his voice. Her gloved hand moved out to grab his forearm, "Thanks so much Deimos, it's great to see you." Teasing him would never get old.

She gave another quick glance around, then gave a nod, "Later sounds good, citadel sounds warm."

DEIMOS
Though Deimos was known for his composure, distinct reticence, and almost constant impassivity, at her mockery he merely rolled his eyes – relieved, comfortable in its expanse, and never intending to tell her of such regards. A brief snort and embedded its way through chest and nares, and they were off, his forearm extended for her to grasp as they twisted and turned over powder, ice, and granules. “I am glad you are here.” Then he wrinkled his nose, as if the distinction was a mere tease, when they both likely knew better.

Stepping out, where the light pierced against the infinite ivory, flanked in backdrops, surroundings etched out of sharpened points and fixtures, pathways draped and cloaked in the foretold complexities of white upon white. Outlined further and further beyond, jutting out of the abyss, out of foretold summits, out of jagged peaks and smoothed over valleys, was the Citadel; a landmark for travelers, for wanderers, for beckonings and earnest renderings of fire.

And he emerged into it as though he’d lived there for eternities, varnished and lacquered against the cold, immersed in its icy wake, in its chilling damnation, in the parallels of strength and fortitude. Born first to the sea, but then to the hallowed sanction of minarets and pinnacles, where he could preside, where he could loom, where he could be some unattainable figure, where he couldn’t be harmed and hurt again and again and again –

Except for now.

Pressing and crossing into the snow, streamlined for precision and motion, he kept his eyes open for residual ilk, flora, and fauna, where bears could blend and emerge into havoc and devastation. Otherwise, they’d be permitted to walk along without much preamble or demolition. So he wasn’t teased or taunted for his tour guide efforts, he began to nuance information as best he could – in his blunt, keen measures. “The Fangs are a network of caves. Rumor has it there is mageglass there, but also dragons, cannibals, and labyrinths.” Really selling it; but better to have the truth then have it pummel and hit her at a moment far too late.

The roll of his eyes was taken with a grain of salt. She knew he was just messing around, at this point she was accustomed to his amused expressions. To prove her point he offered the arm she took, and offered a teasing remark. There it was, the introduction she'd been seeking. Even with the wrinkle of his nose, she knew better. And she felt the same, grinning up at him from under her hood and curls.

They emerged from the portals gateway and she was bombarded with even more white, even more wind. She felt goosebumps rise on her arms, but she was comfortable enough as it were. "They were not playing about it being cold," she snarked, though she was still in awe really of their surroundings. Cold yes, but oddly beautiful. Dangerously terrifyingly elegant.

As they walked through the mountainous and cavernous scape, Deimos began to give his insight. The Fangs, a rather fitting name for the rigid wasteland of ice and stone. She tore her eyes from the path ahead when he mentioned the monsters that this realm was known for. There was no fear in her eyes, if anything it was curiosity. "Have you met any of them?"

There’d been times where he merely lived in the cold in every aspect of his life. Ensconced in his chosen elements, chilled to the bone, so nonchalant, so apathetic, so indifferent to the plights of the earth, save for the mountains he stood within, and ruled with forged strength and seditious motions. Unrelenting, ruthless, conniving; all of it still buried in his figure, still there, still thriving in the blackened regions of a Stygian heart – but he’d been saved too, altered, molded, carved away at the frigid, impassive seams by those like Aisha. Who accepted, who tolerated, who knew exactly what he was, how hard he tried, and what it took for him to stand, to fight, to wage onward, after onslaughts, after traumas, after constant, burdening, bludgeoning anguish. It would’ve been so easy to turn back into the Reaper, into the callous, Laodicean nightmare – if he wasn’t surrounded and taken in by friends, by a found family, rather than the ones long since gone.

And he was never certain if he expressed his gratitude enough; save for a warm chuckle, exuding puffs of air to circulate into the ivory juncture before them – curling in fumes, in the realms of simply being alive. “It will be worse in Deepfrost,” he teased – but eyes were alight on the world, at the figments of worlds before and now worlds after.

He led and traversed, blending and bending, cast into the abyss with little fanfare, marking their way towards the Citadel in massive strides and barely-noted footprints, the hardened snow forgetting their imprints. At the mention of meeting any, the grin fell away, coming to a familiar tether of his furrowed brows, rigid, contorted, controlling breathing. “Just the dragons.” A pause, wondering how deep he should go into the tale, if reliving the foolishness, the stupidity, and then the rampant death would be a highlight on the trail. “A group of us went to retrieve a dragon’s heart. It was needed to rebuild the shrine in the Temple.” His gaze flickered back to the rising town, closer and closer as they walked and tread. “It did not go well.”

Deepfrost, that did force a a frown to her lips, if only for a second. Her first deepfrost had been nothing but hard work and preparations for a week that she'd be absent for and an outcome they could not escape. Making it through had changed things for sure, and part of her felt like she'd gone past it. The reminder that this, specifically Longnight and it's horrors, was an annual ordeal was always unsettling, and very frustrating. She quickly snuffed the hint of melancholic ruminations with a soft hmph and a teasing reply, "I never would've guessed."

Just the dragons, Aisha herself had only ever seen the silver beast that was Jigano's shift, never anything treacherous. She could imagine it in a fit of fury, raining hail and hellfire with sharp claws and sharper teeth. Not the most endearing thing to picture roaring upon the higher ridges above her, but she would spare herself no false comforts. "You said there are cannibals too?" she asked.

The peaks of the citadel began to be visible on the horizon, flecked with gold and white and darker colors as the sun shone down upon it's precipices. A shiver of excitement crept down her spine, she shook it out with her free hand, letting it leave the hilt of her sword to point a gloved index finger, "That's it up ahead right?"

Something gloomy, desolate, and forlorn spun along the attuned bond, and for once it wasn’t him plunging down the edges with his anguish and despair – and then it was gone, as if it were never there. A reminder, perhaps, as he glanced down at her, that even those with high spirits, with fire in their hearts, with vivacity in their bones, could be picked and chipped away by this earth. That embers could be diminished and dimmed, that flames may not spread as wide or as far, that there were things that clung to remnants and memories in them as well; even if they were no more than vestiges. It still hurt. It still claimed. It still lasted. So he gave naught to the void of its rapacity, other than the pervading currents of reassurance, of strength, of how they’d remained, even if they’d been battered, broken, beaten, and damned in the haze. The tease permitted an arch of his brow, but not much more.

Eyes back upon the horizon, along steeples and towers, upon darkened plumes rising out of ivory eclipses; tilting his head to listen, to reverberate. “Mm. Supposedly they were taken care of, but I imagine some sequestered themselves away.” He took naught for granted – and had only been a witness to one of those particular inhabitants before the dragon; and it’d almost been nothing at all, considering not a single nuance of comprehension or knowledge passed through the party before Sunjata had cut the man apart. The Fangs would just be another grand opportunity for them to regain some proclivity. Or maybe he’d just run out of hope in the last few seasons.

They pressed onward, closing in on the aforementioned world. “Yes,” and there was a hint of a grin in his response, as they walked forward, forward, forward, as they eventually left the ice and rime behind, and instead tread upon a mixture of cobblestones and snow, in a city surrounded by walls. The palace jutted ahead, roads marked by lines of fires, markets dotting the landscape for those that required the necessities out in the cold, and the seemingly endless streets, avenues, and alleys he was still learning, memorizing. “What do you want to see first?”

Cannibals in the mountains, in the caves of ice and desolation. He was right of course, they would never have been so lucky as to completely vanquish the threat. That wasn't realistic, darkness would always creep back in, shadow by shadow. Just another thing to look out for then, and it wasn't as if any of the other places in Caido were any more dangerous. The grounds had it's fair share of monsters, Torch it's fair share of colossal erupting volcanoes. What's a few cannibals to that?

They'd finally finished the last stretch of the well trodden path from the portal to the citadel, and there it was. The sun gleamed off the structures, fires lit the cobbled streets. It looked warm and strong yet worn and tired. Massive stone walls of grey and ice surrounded the city, not quite inviting but well fortified, safe. The question she was posed was given a snort in response, "Well shit how should I know? You live here, you know me, what do you think I wanna see first?" There was an energetic playfulness behind her words, a smile on her face as she looked up and over at the general.

Each land seemed to have its own designated terrors and tyrannies; and eventually they became par for the course, expected, not even openly surprising. Volcanoes erupting, sicknesses spreading, monsters unfurling from woodworks, ursurs and dragons rampaging along icy windfalls. Threats were almost a dime a dozen, and contentment, happiness, peace, a far rarer composition, made, instilled, and carved from their own manners, instances, and mettle. He’d thought he’d had it, and for a time that’d been true – family and friends and loved ones surrounding, cherishing, a generous assortment of love and devotion –

Stripped down to nearly nothing in less than a year.

Except for those like Aisha, and no measure of his gratitude could accurately express seconds and instances like these were openly regarded in tranquility, in serenity, in healing, balming edges to his battered soul.

He only laughed at her snark, expecting some manner of reply, his head rising to stare over the proportions before them. “Certainly not the barracks first then,” and he snickered, smirked, manifested a very juvenile grin, before leading them down the winding edges of road and stones, nodding to those manifested outside, striving to carry himself as he’d done on the tundra – that he belonged to the winter havens and the frigid gales. “Palace, then the buildings surrounding it,” which included the military installation anyway. The structure would be jutting out towards the skyline anyway, appearing like an icy fixture, a towering colossus of carved sanctities and reaches, and the squares before it lined in market wares, should Aisha wish to pry and wander.

Aisha rolled her eyes, very openly mocking a gesture he so often replied to her with and giving a low grumble to his sarcasm. There was so much hope, so much promise in her heart for the future. She could feel it start to form, the pieces that would forge her adventure. Nomadic tendencies and restless spirit, tired and trodden back to the city in the snow. It felt clear, fresh, exciting.

And a friend was by her side. One of her closest. He might not know it, for she so desperately clung to the armor that sheltered her heart, but he meant something far deeper to her than most of the people she'd met in this realm. He consistently changed the way she thought, the way she felt, he'd make her feel safe and wanted and happy and he'd do it with a roll of his eyes.

There was no coherent expression of this in her mind, just solace as they walked through a new world, enclosed by ice and tundra. There was a welcome difference in temperature within the walls than without, as if the warmth from the buildings bled out from their pores; chimneys and windows and doors, even walls. The citadel was built to be a hearth in and of itself. Deimos pointed out the palace to her, but it'd already tempted her with it's crystalline skin.

It was beautiful, as a diamond was. "It's amazing," she murmured, drawing her hazel gaze over the icy spires. "Who lives there?" she asked as she started closer towards it and it's surrounding structures. She didn't know much about the governing body of Halo, but she knew Deimos was a functioning facet. He'd have more to tell.

DEIMOS
The Sword had known what it was like to be nomadic – though his had always been more towards the refugee inclinations, when the Edge had lost their home to war, when invasions had forced them to linger within icy caves, forging perseverance, calculations, and maelstroms. He’d learned quickly how to adhere to the mountain landscape, how to alter, how to change, how to adapt, even if sometimes it was slowly – and this had been one of those moments too, sprung and stung and strung together out of happenstance, circumstances, and loss. But they could equally find triumph out of those notions, out of those hellholes, and he tried to stay above it, rising from ashes, from consuming, threatening tethers, from the lines that spelled doom, sorrow, and desolation. So he snagged and grabbed, permitted the slightest bit of avarice to pierce through his soul, to remain afloat, to be something more, and not infinitely less.

Maybe Halo would be enough. Maybe he would be enough. Maybe they would all come together to be better, stronger, and determined facets in a world only surrounded by challenges.

Deimos waited for Aisha’s reaction, eyes lifting back to the Palace. The Basin had never constructed something so decadent or ostentatious, but it seemed to be the only building here signifying a regime, a seat of power. “The Warden, Morgan.” He wasn’t certain who else occupied the massive structure; perhaps other council members, perhaps staff, perhaps no one. “She is also of a military mind.” Kinship in warriors, which Aisha could likely appreciate. His gaze went to the buildings surrounding the icy, glacial structure, pointing to each in turn. “The Arcane Academy, supposedly for magic users to train.” He’d never gone, and had no intentions, not with Zariah’s ilk and name already long-established over its contortions. Half-tempted to burn it down, if he was being honest. Fighting off a snarl at the outpost, he gestured to the more modest edifice. “The Council Hall,” which the spitfire could likely ascertain the purpose for herself, and then his head nodded towards the final one. “And the barracks.”

Deimos pointed out the various divisions of the palace, starting with the warden of the arctic, Morgan. She'd heard of her before, just in passing; how she'd taken over from the Launcelyns, from Korbin's sister who perished. Aisha tried to stay versed in the goings on (dramas perhaps) of the rest of the world, but she knew little more about Morgan than that. She grinned at his mention of their ilk, Morgan would have to be someone she met.

Then on to the academy, an imposing and mundane thing that Deimos didn't seem too fond of either. She wouldn't be using it anyway, but it didn't strike her interest like the other bits. "Supposedly?" she questioned his word choice, prompting elaboration.

He finished up, pointing out a council hall and the barracks. She wanted to see that of course, the place she would spend most of her time should she move here. She'd already begun moving in that direction, "Lets see it then!" Eager, excited, satisfied in her explorations for the first time in months. This was new, this was good.

A shrug of his shoulders at her inquiry, staring back at a building he’d rather not see. “Zariah instructed there. She has since perished, so I am not certain if anyone else is teaching.” And he wouldn’t bother in the implementation of it, with no desire to meander into anything Launcelyn owned and operated.

Besides, there were the barracks to consider, and despite the fact that he’d teased about it being last on their list, Aisha had already snagged and hastened towards the building. The Sword shook his head, muffling a snort, and emboldened quick, long strides, cutting in front of her with a cheeky grin, and opening the door to the confines.

It was similar in ways to how he’d ensured the Hollowed Grounds barracks had been laid out – staking out the front parlor for himself, council members, and fellow soldiers, with a long table for plans, diagrams, and unfurled maps. The heart also occupied a massive portion of the wall, with Zuriel already in front of it, head raised towards Aisha for half a moment, before taking it upon herself to continue dozing. While the fellow compatriot would be allowed to wander and poke her head in, as he expected her to, he crouched before the fire, giving a pat to the unicorn’s neck, while ensuring the fire was stoked all the more.

Rising, he bid her free rein. “Armory and soldier’s rooms further down the hall, and all the way back is a door to the training grounds.” He followed behind, permitting her a look through before mentioning anything else – more than a few places needed work and restoration, which he intended to get through before they rendered themselves much closer to Deepfrost.

Curiosity was the only driving factor behind her questions about the academy, she had no use for it anyway. And once she'd heard enough, placing the name Zariah to her surname and surmising the connotations, she moved on with little more to say. It was just a building now, without it's arcane masters, a blocky eyesore (in her judgmental opinion).

Deimos jogged back in front of her, pulling an indignant grin to her lips. Fine, slowpoke, the tease was contained, instead she shook her head at his cheeky expression. The door to the barracks was swung open, a main room full of warmth. A long table, the birthing place of battle plans and strategies, where warriors had likely gotten drunk on the honeyed spoils of victory together for many years. It was empty but for them now, two soldiers occupying a hall built for many.

Aisha could see the potential, something old becoming something new, and she liked it.

With an analytical eye she went around the main hall room, looking at any decorations or ornamentals for a trace of the past. She stopped when she reached the fireplace, where a familiar friend sat sleeping, "You know your companion gave me a really similar greeting," she said to the unicorn, teasing her human and running a hand along her spine should she let her. She glanced back up to Deimos when he spoke of the other rooms, giving her the layout should she venture off.

And that she did, she gave him a smile and stood from her crouch, stalking away and through the hall to the other rooms. First the armory, then the dormitories, both of which were adequate but lacking, and then to the grounds. Big wooden doors opened up at the end of the hall to a a large yard laden in stone and snow. Columns surrounded the grounds, and a wall on the other side. It was a great space, but the utilities were severely damaged.

Back into the hall, she swung around the corner to comment to Deimos, "The training yard looks like shit, someone has to put those targets out of their misery," she joked, (ah yes the foreshadowing to when Aisha arguably tortures them further) before asking on a more serious note, "Does the Halo guard operate out of here? It seems kind of beat up."
