all my troubles on a burning pile
Rigby wandered through the crowds, toying briefly with the faded gold ring at his ear. Easy, nonchalant, quiet; so unremarkable they wouldn't expect a thing. Until of course it's gone from their side, or their purse, or whatever other place one would store something of interest. Rigby hated interacting with people at the best of times, but stealing was something different. It wasn't just a way to survive, it was fun, exhilarating, and he fucking loves a rush.

After a while he came across a less populated area in the streets of Haulani, and noticed a girl. Shorter, dark hair, facing away. At her side there was a knife, and not just any rusty old knife, but a good one. The kind of thing he could trade for something better, like food or drink. God he could use a drink, or a new pack of smokes. He headed her direction, appearing unimposing, like just another teenage boy.

He just brushed past her, but deft fingers pulled the knife from it's sheath and slid it up his billowy black sleeves. He always wore dark clothes with lots of room for hiding things, keep it close and hidden. He looked back after he passed her, holding up his hand in apology for bumping into her, then continued forwards like nothing had happened. Into the crowd, hopefully out of sight.

eyes can't shine unless there's something burning bright behind
Aurelia didn't feel it when it happened. But she felt it after, the smoke in her breath hitching as she realized in silent shock. Her hunter's knife was not particularly large or bulky but, it did have a good weight to it. And she almost always wore it, unless she was sparring or swimming or... yeah, you get the point. If she ever did take it off, it wasn't likely to be anywhere but in the safety of her bunker on the Ark, stowed away in some hidden nook.

And she definitely hadn't put it there. Its sheath was still attached to her belt. Turning, her fingers squeezing against the filter of her cigarette until it snapped out of her grip, she spotted him. The boy, the unassuming street rat, that had bumped into her only moments ago. Wasting nothing and no time, Aurelia was after him at a sprint, determined not to lose sight of him. Only it wasn't anger that fueled her, it was... worry?

Oh, fuck that, I'm pissed!

It was when he tried to escape into an alley that she caught him. Only, she wasn't sure what happened. As she rounded the corner, crates lined the wall, she was closing in but surely she'd so easily lose him to the secrets of Haulani. Her bursting emotion and clear intent caused a swift gust to shift a nearby crate, sending it toppling in front of his unprepared foot.

She had no idea she'd done this, though, only taking advantage of the convenient obstacle. She swooped in, grabbing him by the back of his shoulders, ensuring that he would not catch his balance in time. Her strong hand went straight for his arm, twisting it so that it would cause him pain.

"Give. it. back!" her words were a barely-composed snarl, "Idiot! Do you have any idea what I'm capable of!? I could kill you right now, even without my knife!" She leaned over him for a moment longer, twisting his arm just a little more to let him know it could be much, much worse.

Her voice lowered into a growl, "And if you don't give it back, I will. Don't! try me."

all my troubles on a burning pile
He'd slipped away so effortlessly, so practiced. She hadn't hadn't noticed him take the knife, right? Rigby had made mistakes though, mistakes that left him completely fucked. For one, the importance of the item, the familiarity of it; he should've taken better note of the way she carried it, whether or not it was something she'd notice being gone. Apparently it was, because the sound of feet sprinting down the cobbled streets sent his spine tingling and a wave of adrenaline coursing through him.

Isn't this what he'd wanted? A thrill? Something close to a smile hit his face as the realization crashed over him, and he began to run.

Through the crowd, swerving and pushing past bystanders who gasps and bellowed as he past, unfortunately sure of his skills in the art of losing someone. He ducked into an alley, and that is when his second mistake came into play. Taking from an accepted was one thing, but from the god's least favorite wizards? That was a whole other story. A sudden gust of not so natural wind blew a crate into his path, and the time it took to startle and back up to go around was just the time she needed to take a fistful of his shirt.

The sudden jerk sent him stumbling back, and the arm that went back to shove her away was grabbed and twisted at a cruel angle. "Ah," he huffed, teeth grit through the sudden pain. She practically roared at him, a cat like snarl that only made him want to growl back. The pain made him angry, the anger covered his fear. He snickered and sneered if only for a second, before she bent his arm further and the ache took over.

"Ah ah ah," he winced, cut off when her voice lowered. He shot her an angry glance over his shoulder, that of a wild animal that didn't want to give in. A more dangerous beast that boiled at his core spat out, "Fuck you." Frustrated, rebellious, rash, stupid.

His huff of pain did little to ease her rough, unrelenting grip on him. The only mercy he'd get from her would be her very fragile exercise of restraint as she demanded her knife back. Even that, he was pushing, as the insult was spat from between his teeth.

Aurelia's jaw clenched, patience wearing. This wasn't a negotation, this was her belonging - and he'd stolen it. He was just pissy that he got caught red-handed and had to pay some form of consequence. With a grunt of anger, Aurelia grabbed the back of his collar and shoved him face-first into a stack of empty, discarded boxes and crates. With the force she applied, the boxes went scattering and he was shoved against the wall.

"Fuck you, too," she snapped back, seething and barely managing to control her temper, to control the muscle memory that came so easily to her, "Think you're so clever, huh? Well, I'll let you in on somethin'. Just 'cause you can see everything lookin' up at it from below, doesn't mean anything," She twisted his arm even further, the angle beginning to look very wrong, to paralyze him with the pain, "when at the end of the day, you're still just the shit stuck on someone's shoe." She felt for her knife in his clothes with the other hand and, if he tried to move, she'd remind him why he shouldn't with a quick push against his pinned arm.

"Don't be so fucking arrogant to think any different."

With a scoff, she located her knife tucked into his clothes. Instead of putting it in its sheath, she pressed it against the warm, visible vein on his neck. She pressed it there so that the cold, unforgiving, inhuman touch of sharpened steel could just cut him, drawing a single drop of blood. She wasn't done yet.

all my troubles on a burning pile
Rigby grunted and seethed as she tugged at his collar and slammed him up against the stone wall. He had enough leeway to at least turn his head so his nose didn't get smashed, his cheek however was roughed up, cut, certainly bruised. That wasn't the main locus of pain though, as she wrenched his arm back further and he finally stopped struggling, froze completely. This wasn't the first time he'd been close to real fucking danger, but it never got easier the give in.

His breaths came quick and heavy, anger burning off with every huff. Her words bit and nipped, but it was nothing he hadn't heard before. Frankly he liked it that way, seeing the world from the bottom meant he had nothing to lose but his own life. Unfortunately that did seem to be at stake here, so he kept his stubborn foul mouth shut.

She found her knife in his sleeve, pulling it out and pressing it to his throat. If he had been moving at all, this was the point that he was paralyzed. He forced the fire back inside, smoldering the coals so that he could calm, handle the situation, not get his throat slit in a fucking alley. The slightest pain, he couldn't see the cut but he could feel it was there. They were at a standstill, and her silence as all too unnerving. Warm brown eyes sought to look at her, to try and figure out what she would do next.

eyes can't shine unless there's something burning bright behind
For a moment all she could hear was the sound of their heaving breaths, the pain that hitched in his. She met his eyes and locked onto them for a moment, still glaring, still tough, still keeping him hostage there for a few moments longer. But there was a shift in her expression, as if out of a daze, no longer seeing red now that her knife was back in her possession.

"Alright," she snapped, "I think you've had enough." With that, she withdrew from him, pulling her hand and the knife away. She was ready for him if he wanted to launch some sort of counter-attack out of spiteful, vengeful rage, and part of her wanted to egg him on. A part of her had wanted to torture him just for stealing a knife...

But another part of her wanted to fling that knife away, to cast away all of the blood it had shed - which was so much more than a drop. It was the first time she'd used it in Caido to inflict harm on someone, and she'd known it would always come to that. Always. Such was her life. But she thought it would have been for different reasons; for a more just cause. She was appalled at how quickly her instincts had dictated a killing move.

Straightening up, she furrowed her brow at him. "If you need something, all you have to do is fucking ask... idiot..." her gaze looked him up and down, raking over the thin bits of skin she could see. "What is it? Food? If it's really a knife you want, you can't have this one." She flipped it in the air, catching it by the hilt with ease before she sheathed it. "It's all I have left."

all my troubles on a burning pile
There was a moment when he met her gaze that he thought she might actually do it, plunge the knife in and let him get reluctantly shoveled into Mort's damned realm, else haunt the streets of Haulani forever. He didn't realize he wasn't breathing, just staring blankly, heart pounding skin hot and slick with sweat. And then she backed off him, the cool knife removed from his vein, and he let out the air that'd been trapped in his chest.

He didn't straighten up like she did, he wasn't a proud man. He was a street rat, he got his thrills from stealing, taking out his anger on anyone who got in his way, and surviving. He didn't care about appearances, and so with a rumbling sign he turned around back to the wall and lowered himself to the ground, leaning his head back against the wall and glancing up at her as he pulled a pack of cigarettes from his pocket.

Now that this was over, he didn't really care what she had to say. They'd had their fun, the fuck was she still hanging around for? The boy popped the smoke in his mouth, reaching up to his neck to run his finger along the shallow cut there. He grinned at the blood on his fingers, turning his attention only halfway back to her when she spoke. His grin widened as she finished, his only response was that and a lazy middle finger.

He knelt against the wall like a cornered animal, and she couldn't blame him for it, but it did help ease the ready tension along her collarbones. He flipped her the finger and she gave him a scoff in return. "Alright. Silent type. Fair enough."

There was a small backpack strapped to her, though, and she pulled it forward. Unfastening the line that held it taut, she rummaged through it for something. Anything. An object that might express her understanding of his situation in a much less aggravated, violent way than before.

Presenting a large apple, she tossed it into his lap - or hand, should his reflexes be sharp. Then, she pulled out a box of cigarettes and pried one of them from it.

"You won't be rid of me that easy. You owe me an explanation, after all, you tried to steal from me." She lifted her guarded gaze toward him before she tied her bag closed and slung it over her shoulders again. "Or maybe you'd like an escort to jail? The governor is a good friend of mine, and I'm sure he won't appreciate a thief in his city. Hell, I might get a reward." The threat was spoken with a casual confidence, offering him only a shrug, before she lit her own cigarette and took a puff from it. He had interrupted the first one she'd been smoking.

all my troubles on a burning pile
Rigby gave an incredulous shake of his head when she didn't move on, when she hovered and spoke like there was more to say. He'd never understand those inquisitive types, empathetic people who wanted to know why guys like him were the way they were. She could do what she wanted of course, but she'd get no thanks from him.

He noticed the apple moments before it hit his lap, flinching just a bit at the impact. It was cool, bright in color, not bruised yet like most of the stuff he ate. Rigby wasn't necessarily a proud person, but he was true to himself and didn't care what other's thought. So while she'd get little gratitude for her charity, he wouldn't turn it down. The crunch of the apple's skin was satisfying, the taste mingling with the smoke was less so.

Once again she was lecturing, lazy honey brown eyes turned their attention to her expression behind the puff from her cherry. Jail? Had to be a joke, who the fuck goes to jail in Haulani? Everyones crooked, if they shoved every two-bit theif behind bars there'd be no city. He rolled his eyes, taking another bite of his apple and speaking through a mouthful of fruit, "I don't owe you anything, princess."

Aurelia wasn't there to make judgements or draw conclusions, merely hitting the cigarette between her fingers as she watched him take a bit of the apple. Those fingers tightened slightly around it, shifting the object to her other hand as she placed the other on her hip. She wore a skeptical smirk.

"My name's not princess, just like yours isn't street rat, so don't get smart with me or you'll feel a lot stupider after," she snapped, tone darkened by anger before she let it go.

"Fine, if you won't tell me, I'll just have to figure it out myself. Let's see... You were definitely a problem child. I mean, just look at you- you still are." She looked over him with emphasis, still smirking, "What? Mommy and daddy didn't love you enough and that makes you mad? Your parents didn't want you, so now it's the world's responsibility. Only, the world's a miserable place and no one would miss you if you were gone. And yet you act like an insolent child even when you're being offered a hand."

She let out a huff, "Get a fuckin' grip."

all my troubles on a burning pile
Rigby shrugged at her comment about names, "Street rat works for me," he droned, sarcastic and spiteful. He might've feared her before, but now there was a bit of confidence to him. He'd done her dirty and gotten away with only a scratch and an apple, if he read her right he had little to fear. Perhaps a hasty assumption, but one he was willing to make for now. He shook off her threat, taking another crunch into the fruit's red skin.

But then she does something that does light him afire again. She tries to analyze, inquire into his own life. His brows narrowed, clearly peeved at her judgments, he shot her a dangerous look, full of the fire he'd shown before that brooded quietly. He let her finish, practically bristling by the end. He considered her for a second then, a little voice in the back of his mind asking how hard it would be to shove this apple down her throat and run.

In the end, he settles to taking another bite and offering a smirk. "Spot on, princess, spot on," and he says so because he's fine to commit to false narrative as long as it doesn't expose the truth. He wouldn't give her a cent of that, not a thread to follow. His past and his reasons were his alone, and he owed her nothing.

eyes can't shine unless there's something burning bright behind
Aurelia didn't care if he was scared of her or not. She knew what she was capable of, and she was certainly not afraid of him. Let that be telling enough - and if it wasn't? Well, she hoped it didn't have to come to that, even if she was entirely willing to prove her ability to render him completely defenseless {for a second time}.

Her brows did stay furrowed, however, because he was mildly infuriating.

It was only when she began to unravel his tale, or at least what she thought it might be, that she got any real reaction from him. She watched as his gaze shifted and guarded against the words she hurled at him like venom, steeling against his dangerous look with one of her own. She knew she had his attention then, knew she'd struck some sort of cord. There were many times she'd heard similar assertions of her own life, as she sat in an imposition not unlike the one he found himself in now.

Though, his reaction was... disappointing. The difference between the two of them was clear. He was icy cool, even when squished beneath a boot, and she could constantly feel the ignition of her own heart. She knew his plight, had lived it in some measure, yet they were so very opposite. Her jawline unclenched as she inhaled another hit from her cigarette.

Something began to churn beside her frustration. The smoke clouded around them, there in the dark alleyway, lit only by the cherries of their cigarettes and the light of distant torches peering across their faces. Aurelia was thinking about something, considering carefully.

"Well, you make for a pretty shitty thief, to top it all off, it's amazing you've survived so long on your own," she prompted. Her tone was far less pissed off and bitchy this time. "I could teach you how to actually fight for yourself, so you don't get beat up the next time you piss off the wrong person," there's a chuckle and a grin at that, both of them darkly sinister at their core, "Doubt anyone else will be as friendly as I am." But she wasn't going to waste much more breath on this guy, who didn't seem too appreciative of her efforts to reach out. The offer was on the table, at least. "If that's something you're ever interested in, come find me. I'm sure we can work out a proper trade of sorts. My name's Aurelia, by the way," she leaned forward then, hovering over him, her words barely above a whisper, "enjoy the apple, street rat."

Without much else, without waiting for any smartass retort, she turned and left.

~FIN.
Aurelia
