Time to air frustrations out in…moderately healthier ways.

She’d been neglecting her staff lately – not on purpose, but the longer range of her bow had been far more efficient in recent events, in tracking down monsters, in annihilating foes. After wandering down to the dock to find the Ark gone, out to sail somewhere and Jack likely vanished with it, another chance at discussion over ghost whale hunting had been terminated. She didn’t know what the hell was going on with either uncle. And she didn’t know what to do about anything lately; bound and lost in the confines of the unknown. She bristled at the containment.

So instead of wiling away in idle hours, where her brain would merely catch up and churn into the same quandaries again, the youth and her companion pulsed and beat towards the Slagveld – at least she could beat something into submission there – control, no matter how minor, held an impact in the justification of all her dilemmas.

Fangorn grumbled quietly on the edge of the boxing ring, settled in a spot, while Melita snagged at an available target. Though immobile, it’d do the trick for the moment, and she stood a ways off, hands wrapped around one of her favorite weapons. It sung beautifully in her hand, the dark enamel and lacquer pulsing, pervading, vibrant with the nuance of simply being used. Here, she could imagine the effigy as a ghost whale, pummeled into nothingness. An enemy, an adversary – maybe Kiada, newly reborn as an Ascended. Anything that dared to oppose or string her along.

And with one mighty leap, she swung.

Aurelia
and that the world is always our fault
when we did nothing, how did we do wrong?
At this point, Aurelia is a regular visitor to the Slagveld; she's kinda always here. At least, when she's not tangled up in other more compelling affairs or ventures. Usually, those will lead her back here anyway. Another reason to get stronger, another person to be better for.

When she enters the training area, she spots a familiar face. She doesn't yet make her presence known, however, much preferring to see what Melita can do before interrupting.

The staff in Melita's hands is dark. It pulses with some magical incantation. The look of it swinging through the air is quite fierce, all ounces of frustration and intention behind it. Aurelia's lips pull into a very small smile.

"Who's got you so riled up?" It's a casual announcement that she's been watching. Her shoulder is leaned up against a beam several feet behind Melita. A direct, open answer isn't expected, though.

So she steps forward, giving Melita a pointedly challenging smirk. "I bet you can't land a hit on a moving target." Oh, Aurelia knows Melita certainly can but this could be.. fun.

She's already prepared for an exercise like this, wearing clothes that allow for mobility and, actually, no boots. They were discarded near the entrance. Being barefoot allows for faster, more agile movement. Her arms go out, stance loose and a little lowered, smirk still planted on her face, eyes watchful; ready to move at any moment.

Melita too had long since lost her shoes – an adaptable trait from where she’d been born, and where she lived now – racing across the terrain with ambition and fire, plunging her staff into the target. It stung into the immobile effigy with an audible notion, the strength, the perseverance, behind its mustering a savage little squall; she would’ve howled into the thrashing aspirations had she been alone.

Instead, once her assaults had begun, subsequent, quick, flashing maneuvers, there was another voice – and upon completing a satisfying volley, a round where her hands held and scorched and lit a flame in her soul, her head turned in the direction. Aurelia – asking why she was embroiled in this churning, burning realm. “Ghost whales. LongNight. Anything and everything.” She shrugged, figuring she’d encompass and embody all of it – muster the accord of defiance and sedition, pour all the frustrations into the earth, feel better unleashing her incensed rage upon an effigy, rather than an individual.

Except, apparently, Aurelia welcomed an onslaught. The honeybee snorted, and Fangorn grumbled a warning – to either figure, perhaps. “That’d be an unfortunate bet for you.” You'll lose. A proud smirk fastened itself upon her mouth; instigated, riled, leading ember for ember. It was probably very stupid.

So the girl rushed; fast and swift, quick and rapid, keeping the staff tucked against her ribs, until she believed she was close enough, before swinging, launching, towards the girl’s side.

Aurelia
and that the world is always our fault

Anything and everything. The answer pries a small, forceful breath from her nose. She can understand that all too well, even if she's not privvy to exactly what Melita's been going through.

She'd rather clash and burn than let herself peter out. That includes in regards to letting her walls down and talking about her dreaded feelings - ugh. At least, most of the time. She's done that too much already. So she makes no attempt to open up here and now. Melita doesn't seem to want to talk about anything, either. At least, not in any spoken language.

Aurelia's more comfortable with this form of expression anyway.

"We'll see," there's a determined, ambitious curve of a smile in her words.

Aurelia's thinking of potential ways she can dodge a move in the time it takes Melita to ready herself. If she wants to, she could absolutely engage and counter without need for any of her own weapons.

When the staff comes swinging in for her flank, she's prepped for it. She instantly dives down, swooping beneath its reaches. She doesn't stop or falter at that, however, tucking her limbs in to quickly roll forward. These are the kind of maneuvers she's been trained to use. A lesson taught to her what feels like a long time ago; let nothing land, close in when you know you have the advantage. She's immediately back on her feet in a flush.

"Gonna have to do better than that to catch me."

They’d see, indeed.

A swoop, a roll, and Aurelia was away from her strikes. A snicker unfurled on the edge of her mouth, ruffian and Cheshire, as if amused – on the hunt, maneuvering too. Melita had spent her childhood hunting down demons, or running from them, and this wouldn’t be any different – not from days where she’d whittled her own staffs and other armaments from broken sticks and chiseled logs, striving to survive.

There was no need to rise to the bait; the youth had plenty of frustration, irritation, and exasperation built up within her to live out its own lifetimes in an infernal conflagration. She launched once more, leaps in different directions, remaining an unpredictable little fathom, bestial wake –

Until she reached out, a long, swooping, practiced move, the staff an extension of her arm, aiming for Aurelia’s shoulders.

Aurelia
and that the world is always our fault
when we did nothing, how did we do wrong?
Aurelia's all too familiar with the ins and outs of a skilled spar, whether there are weapons involved or not. So, when Melita dives and dips and swings wildly around, she's caught off guard. Almost doesn't know what to do about it. Almost. She nearly leaps backwards, pulling herself away from the frenzy.

At first, she thinks she may get away again. Still, her gaze is confused as it flickers back to catch Melita's. What are you doing? she seems to ask silently.

Then, it all makes sense. It was a ruse! Aurelia's breath hitches as the staff swoops in, a startling move made with ease and contemplation. "Ah!" Her voice gasps out from the hit against her upper arm, but not because it was particularly painful.

Suddenly, things start getting a little swimmy. Including Aurelia's intentions. What were they doing again?

Oh yeah, fighting!

With a grimace and an inkling of cold sweat, Aurelia glides forward (Which feels super weird! Is that wind in her hair?) and lunges out with her body to slam against Melita, shoulder to shoulder.

A lot of people had asked Melita what are you doing. It was a par for the course reaction, given her predilection for impulsive, irrational antics, for dashing headlong into fires, for streamlining herself into an amazing aptitude for stupidity. Sometimes she could actually answer the inquiry. But those unpredictable filaments, those branches and brambles of unrelenting force, occasionally worked to her advantage. The world wouldn’t know what she’d come up with next.

Which had apparently worked in her favor this time. Aurelia’s gasp caused the briefest Cheshire grin, and having forgotten the staff’s mild effects, continued on her bombardment as if nothing was awry.

The other woman slammed into her, and if it weren’t for the grounding motions in Melita’s feet, in the ways she’d been taught to maneuver her stance into defense, fortitude, and might, she would’ve been instantly on the floor, toppled. Instead, she coiled back into the force, feeling it all the way through her toes, as if an aching ricochet lived and immersed from within.

But these close quarters also gave her ample opportunity to strike again, and the positioning permitted her to attempt a strike; swinging the weapon in one practiced, precise move, towards Aurelia’s knees.

Aurelia
and that the world is always our fault
when we did nothing, how did we do wrong?
Aurelia's vision begins to change, slow enough that she doesn't quite realize what's happening yet. She's suddenly starkly aware of each and every hair on her body, though. They all raise up in tiny goosebumps as she swoops through the space between her and Melita, landing a very hard hit with her body.

As they collide, the jostle of the motion has her bones grinding against one another beneath the pressure. It should hurt, it feels like it would hurt, but it doesn't. Does it? She's not sure, everything feels... tingly. And sweaty, really sweaty. It's very warm in here.

Her face contorts in wild perplexion as Melita's hair unfurls towards her with tiny, red fingers. Aurelia herself ricochets from the blow, whirling away from Melita and the... hair-hands. "That's... weird..." the words slip out.

Her body knows what to do but her mind is slower to catch up. Her surroundings are still spinning even as she feels her feet steady.

And what is that taste?

Aurelia doesn't have long to reflect on this when suddenly something hits her in the side of her knee. Brows furrowing, Aurelia suddenly glares up at Melita.

She makes a single step forward, one leg stiffening, and sweeps the other leg out towards Melita's own flank, thigh, knee, whatever. Only, the strike feels overextended and the space between them lengthens without either of them even having to move. She lurches into the strike regardless of her sudden lack of depth perception.

Melita, ordinarily, wouldn’t let anything distract her from her course of action. Once something was fixated in her motions, it was difficult to pull her away from its flares, no matter how contradicting or ridiculous; but the slip of Aurelia’s words caused her a momentary hesitation. Her words echoed, bound, and leapt from her mouth, brows furrowed in confusion. “What?”

And then she was struck, a leg sweeping out from under her. An automatic reaction, besides a snarl and flicker of irritation for not seeing it coming, was to tuck and roll. A sideways motion, she fell to the floor and ricocheted in one quick volley, back on her feet swiftly, efficiently, but a little distanced away from Aurelia. Perhaps that was just as well – she’d have enough clearance now to do much of the same to the other woman.

Unaware of what was transpiring within the fellow smuggler’s mind, the youth took hold of her staff with a firm grasp in one hand, swinging downward in a penchant of power and precision, attempting to rid Aurelia of her upright mobility too.

Aurelia

That... does not sound like Melita's voice. It sounds like someone else... but Aurelia can't name who. Her mind feels like its suddenly made of goop and she has to keep it from falling out of her ears. "Oh, that's weird," she repeats, cupping one of her ears with her hand.

But she's fighting, and the line drawn between real fight and practice fight is suddenly blurred. She lands the hit against her assailant (who's both far away and very close) with a vigor that might scream that she's trying to inflict a serious injury. They fall, or duck, or both. It's hard to tell from this ever-changing, warped angle.

Ever-changing indeed, as Aurelia is suddenly dropped from her upright position. The staff becomes an extended arm, drawing out towards her until it hooks in against the back of her knees. Aurelia's legs give out and her hands reach out to grab hold of... balance, but they fail miserably. Yet even from her prone position on the ground, Aurelia stubbornly snags out to grab her opponent by the arm, to stop them from hitting her again.

"You.. your hair's on fire," it's supposed to be a taunt, but there's so much bewilderment in Aurelia's accusation that her words hardly keep hold of any animosity.

There's a permanent frown on her face at this point, a convolution of emotions.

Well, something was going awry.

Melita had expected they’d wage a little skirmish – blow for blow, laugh for laugh, leap for leap, assailment for assailment – but it wasn’t turning out the way she’d pictured the notions. Instead, Aurelia seemed to be visibly, and mentally, falling apart (though the honeybee did take a moment to check and make sure her hair wasn’t on fire). The hand that grabbed hold of her arm needn’t have done so, the youth had already stilled, taking hold of both their weights in her grounded, stalwart stature.

The staff went nowhere, staying enclosed by her calloused palm, her own brows coming together, a rare stillness coming over her form. If she ceased and desisted, would anything change? “Are you all right?” She shook her head, merely to showcase that her locks weren’t in flames, that nothing else was happening, in between the marks of telltale confusion.

She blinks several times, not that this does much to clear her vision, and everything around her still spins. Dazed, she eventually realizes this is Melita, and has been the whole time. She blinks several more times and releases her hold on the other's arm. "Sorry- I-?"

The question may as well have gone unheard. Aurelia can feel the effects of whatever the fuck's done this to her getting stronger. "Did you use magic on me?" She asks lowly, and it's not exactly an accusation. If anything it sounds more pitiful, like she couldn't believe Melita would do such a thing. She looks down at her hand, which is very strange-looking, and suddenly her stomach starts to churn uncomfortably. "Or was it something I ate..?"

The staff was put away, tucked along her belt, while she offered a hand, intending to drag Aurelia off to the sidelines. No one had ever become sick during a spar before, at least not with her, and she couldn’t fathom why this had started occurring. Was something else going on with Aurelia? Her head tilted, Fangorn grumbled, extending his vines out too as they maneuvered off towards a vacant bench.

At the inquiry, Melita’s brows furrowed. “I don’t have any magic.” She didn’t take it as an accusation; the youth simply wasn’t capable of it, hadn’t ever wielded it from her form –

Oh.

A dawning wave steadily rose over her thoughts, the realization burning through her memories. Her gaze flickered immediately to her chosen weapon, with a soft sigh and a grimace following. “It might’ve been my staff. I’m sorry, I forgot it could cause hallucinations.” The youth hadn’t utilized it in so long, the side effects hadn’t even immersed themselves in her brain – and she’d begun without Aurelia even there, swinging away. She tilted her head, studying Aurelia, and then hastening Fangorn off to find a glass of water. “Are you feeling any better?” Wouldn’t it cease without the constant pummeling?

Aurelia

Aurelia can manage to shakily walk towards a place to sit. She's not completely disoriented but... it's certainly difficult to figure out whether she's walking in a straight line. Or where that line is. She's so concentrated on not falling flat on her face and taking Melita with her that she barely hears the answer. Not enough to give a response, anyway, not until Melita goes on.

At this point, Aurelia's holding her head in her hands, trying not to look at anything with her eyes, trying to ride through this slightly overwhelming wave. As for Melita forgetting her weapon causes hallucinations, all Aurelia can do is laugh. It bubbles up quietly at first, and then she's having an uncontrollable fit of it.

The glass of water's presented. She sips away at it and relaxes into the bench until the effects begin to fade. The world seems to be right back where it belongs, stable, with no swimming visuals or strange hair. Well, stranger than it already is.

Collecting herself, Aurelia lets out a long, winded sigh. "Yeah, think so," she scratches the back of her head. She then grins up at her fiery-haired, staff-wielding friend.

"Wanna go again?"
