MELITA
It’d probably be rude of Melita to insinuate she wouldn’t mind running into the vermin – might spice up the whole thing, given some excitement rather than this awkwardness – but she kept the notions to herself. While she’d probably be fully capable of handling them on her own, Locke was cursed and Maeve was quite pregnant; she wasn’t going to invite the semblances of chaos at the other woman’s expense.

Instead, she nodded along and forged a path of obedience, applying efforts with her buckets, lifting them up into the cart with ease; following directions and accord with a light, genial hum. Locke seemed ready and eager to take on the load, and she permitted it, intending to take any others and motion through with the same.

Maeve

It would be much better for all of them if they didn't run into the vermin. At least, it would be better for Maeve. She wasn't up for that kind of fight. Not now. Especially when Locke is grumbling, clearly unhappy with the fact that she's doing any kind of work at all, but she doesn't blame him for that. Not when she's so close to her due date and they're out in the Wilds. Maeve has a moment to catch her breath as Locke pours the collected water into the casks in the back of the cart. The mules shift and bray, hooves kicking at loose pebbles as their tails flick, heads tossing.

Locke just manages to seal the last one up when the familiar cries of 'meat, meat, meat'. The caws of the crows a sick staccato, their cries for flesh splitting through the balmy air, sending shivers down her spine. Maeve reaches for the whip at her side, igniting it with a crack and the sonic boom almost urges the crows to scatter, but they're too tempted by the possibility of flesh picked from still living victims.

Maeve uses this!

Pheonix Whip | A magical 10ft whip that creates a small sonic boom and ignites the phoenix feather on its tip when snapped to cause fire damage. When not in use, the feather on the end looks like smouldering embers but is not hot.

Admittedly, he doesn't notice the crows at first, too intent on making sure the casks are sealed properly. The boom from Maeve's whip, however, is very hard to miss. It actually startles him and he partially shifts out of reflex, claws digging into the side of the cart. He can pay for that, probably. He mutters under his breath, swatting flies away before jumping out of the cart.

He makes sure he's away from the flaming whip (when did she get that???) when he shifts, spotted fur replacing scarred skin. The crows seem perfectly content on harassing the trio and you know what? He's never tried hunting birds as a cat. Which is, frankly, a shame. He stalks towards one that is distracted by Maeve's oh so shiny whip and pounces, aiming to grab it in his claws. They're not the only things that are hungry..

MELITA
Melita hid her malicious, vehement smile (something dabbled in Cheshire elements and with a fiendish glee) as she heard the familiar outcries. Something to break up the monotony – pretending as though she hadn’t wished for it moments earlier. With a diligent hum, completely unbothered by the cracking of the whip, by the display of Attuned adornments, the youth shifted her weapons into position. A draw along her arm hastened the bow from her bracelet, the grasp of her fingers over her quiver brought forth the sizzling, crackling, fiery elements, and she suddenly looked serene.

Wild. Untamed. All coiled and contained into one.

The arrow was notched in well versed practice, eyes hastening over the incoming flock, and she released the strand, waiting for the savage hit of embers and plumage.

Maeve

They have varying success against the murder of gore crows. Maeve's whip finds its target, cracking with fire and embers, sending the gore crow to the ground in a burst of flames. It lets out a shriek, flopping and flailing on the ground, finding nothing but pain in its last moments of life. Locke is less successful in his attempts. He's not gotten the hang of hunting birds. They're fast. Fast and small. The gore crow he attempts to snatch swoops out of the way, circling around and diving back towards Locke, claws extended to slash out at his eyes. It doesn't get his eye, but with a quick swipe the crow manages to cut his brow deeply, inciting another cry for meat as the smell of blood fills the air.

Melita is just as successful as the other Accepted. Her arrow strikes true, burning through the crow in a flash, bringing it down to the ground in seconds. The other crows aren't deterred. They keep swooping and lashing out, claws and beaks snapping, scratching, and lashing out between cries for meat and blood.

He misses, growling as the crow swoops back around. The talons rake across his eye and everything is red for a moment. He swats at the bird again but it's a halfhearted attempt. The warm, sticky liquid makes it hard to see so he shifts again. This time to something smaller, something harder to hit. He may not have claws but his fangs do even more damage now.

This time? He simply waits, coiled and posed to strike. If any of them should get near him, he would strike. He's still new to this body too but the hot air feels him with energy. Maybe he'll get his meal after all. And most animals are wary of snakes right? At least he's not bleeding anymore.

MELITA
Oh, this was her element now. Wicked and precise, driven to nothing but that feral, instinctive, savage pinpoint – it hastened in her blood and coiled in her veins. No need for Attuned adornments when sometimes the howls stirred in her regardless; notching back the arrow. Ready to fire another, again and again, a returning volley of savagery.

Fangorn whipped out his vines in case any got too close, became too near, but Melita was focused, honed, diligent. Trained with her defiance, with her meticulous drive for sedition, she pulled back the strands once more – intending to send this particular one closer to the crows stalking Locke (waiting for the fire, the flames, for the burst of feathers again).

Just in case.

Maeve

The murder of gore crows was relentless. The one who originally attacked Locke circled back around, diving for the jaguar that was no longer there, but it made a fatal mistake. While there wasn't a jaguar waiting for it, but instead a viper. A viper that was pissed and full of venom, fangs ready to strike out in a flash, unwilling to relent. Locke was successful this time. Jaw unhinged and venom already beading on the tips of his fangs found home in the crow's flesh.

Maeve was just as successful in her own attempts at thinning the flock, lashing out in quick succession, rendering them dead in a spit of fire and embers. Their corpses lay smoldering on the craggy rock, the smell of seared flesh filling the air, threatening to make the Nightshade sick. The honeybee managed picking off many of her own, leaving them to fall from the sky with death cries and smoldering wings, unrelenting in her assault against the winged creatures.

Soon, the chaos subsided as the last of the crows fled, disappearing back into the sky and leaving them to catch their breath. Maeve huffed, cheeks flushed and breaths coming in quick pants, a grimace tugging on her features.

The viper tosses what's left of the crow to one side and he shifts back, kicking the twitching thing away. He's had enough of petty little beasts and aggravations. But the flock is gone as quickly as it had descended upon them. Not much from his help but it's fine. He rubs a hand across the side of his face, feeling a phantom pain where his jaguar is bleeding. He's never been properly injured in any of his shifts before. It feels strange. Doubly so because he already has a scar there. Maybe it's destiny.

Either way, he makes his way over to Maeve, looking her over. She seems unharmed and there's nothing alarming right away. He does scoop some water out of a cask and holding it out to her. A little weird but no weirder than anything the pair have done together, right?

MELITA
There was a vibrant satisfaction, a burning hum in the back of her throat as the gore crows either fell or disappeared altogether. Brushing her hands together, as if this was just a normal occurrence, she adjusted her weaponry, placing them back where they belonged. Her feet poked at some of the corpses, wondering if they could be utilized for anything (perhaps some feathers on a number of arrows), before her attention went to the other pair.

Maeve must’ve done too much in her state – given her sudden panting and grimacing. Melita was no healer, and Locke seemed to have it handled. But still, her brows furrowed in concern, eyes wandering back to the healing springs. Maybe they needed more than they thought. “Everything all right? I can get whatever else you need.”

Maeve

The Gore Crows leave them be, fleeing before any more of them met the same grim fate and Maeve is left to catch her breath, trying to keep from getting sick. Her eyes are closed, breathing shaky for the span of a few moments, but they open as Locke approaches her. She's not expecting him to offer her water from his cupped hands. True, it might be odd to drink from his hands, but she doesn't push him away. The still warm spring water soothes her nausea and vague discomforting. Finally, she draws in a deep breath, turning to Melita and offering her a wane smile, "I'm okay. We can start heading back. We have what we need here."

They take their time finishing transferring the water to the casks, making sure they're sealed and ready for transport before Maeve climbs into the back of the cart, allowing herself to rest. They trade off leading or driving the cart, making the slow trek back to Torchline with the water from Frey's Breath, this part of the quest finally complete.
