Ludo's woods had been swallowed up by snow, which subsequently both silenced and amplified all the sounds therein. Remi's breath sounded like a ricochet from a whip crack in his ears, bested only by the abrasive cromch of snow beneath his knees as he knelt before his herald's shrine. Not one to come empty-handed, instead of bringing a game that he might play with Ludo, instead, Remi brought along something which might seem useful to anyone who noticed it, but that might hold a deeper significance for the raggedy god.

Small bundles of flint, kindling, and rope pulled apart to create fibres had been bound up in the hide from one of Remi's latest kills and littered around Ludo's wood. Placed in the hollows of trees as Remi was doing now, these small bundles would serve to create fire for any who found themselves lost and cold and alone.

"Our favourite time of year." Remi says under his breath, both meaning it sincerely as much as sarcastically. "Juniper and I have thoughts about what we might do to further bolster the defences of the Greatwood against the ascended." He adds.

DELPHiA
Where had she been? Where indeed...dead, alive, dreaming, awake - the blur of what was and what had been blurred to nothingness as the demigoddess walked aimlessly. The world had changed much and dust from seasons passing yet clung to her dark clothes. Wherever she had been, clearly laundry had not been a priority.

Her guide this day was Tishy, who seemed to have grown since she last recollected, memories far too blurred to know where one started and the other ended. The cat sith pranced through the snow, leaving no tracks in its wake, weaving between trees that moved of their own accord. Grey eyes gazed upon the snow where footprints ought to be. Strange...Tishy was indeed very much part of the living world, why would their not be tracks? So lost in her musings was Delphia that she did not notice her own feet moving through the snow soundlessly. Only once a strange sensation tingled up her spine did she pause and turn to behold a familiar face.

Oh. She was walking through Mort's plane, not Vi's. Silly her.

"Hello, Remi." she said softly, neither acknowledging or apologizing for literally walking through him just moments before.

JUNIPER
you think i'm happy because i'm smiling,
but it's the easiest thing to do
Juniper showed up just in time to watch Delphia appear in the proper plane. This rather surprised her, of course, but she tried not to show it. Instead she offered the others a calm greeting with a small, friendly smile. "Hello, Remi." Then, to Delphia: "I don't believe we've met. I'm Juniper Dubois, Greatwood Guardian."

Since Remi was Ludo's demigod and could presumably handle the necessary arrangements, Juniper hadn't worried about an offering, though she had tucked a nice puzzle box into her bag just in case. If Remi had it covered, though, she'd save it for another time. She didn't try to speak to Ludo directly, just nodded in agreement as Remi called upon the god.
if you looked a little closer,
you'd find my eyes aren't smiling too.

Alea

Soft wings followed Remi soundlessly through Ludo's Woods, though the barn owl made no attempt to visually hide itself. Alea wasn't hunting, and she didn't think Remi or the others gathered below would hurt her -- she recognized Remi and Juniper from Ludo's party not too long ago -- so she didn't care if they saw her. Perched in the last tree Remi placed a bundle in, she let out a soft keening sound. She knew what those bundles were; she'd seen them before. She'd used them before, in the depths of winter when not even her feathers were warm enough.

Alea had already liked Remi because of his role in Ludo's party, but now she liked him even more. Sitting in the tree above him, she tilted her head in curiosity. The Greatwood needed to be defended against the Ascended? She only had the vaguest idea of what an Ascended was, but if Ludo wanted to keep them out, they must be bad.

ludo

Braved the forests, braved the stone
Braved the icy winds and fire
Braved and beat them on my own

The woods seem to shudder with Remi's presence; or rather, they shiver with the cold. Favourite time of year indeed. When it appears it will not be as the others who have encountered it are used to - Ludo appears to Remi as itself, an alabaster youth with dark hair and eyes, and fingertips blackened with the cold.

"Hello, everyone," it says, its tone as chilly as the snow all around. Crouching down, it reaches out for some of the kindling that Remi has bundled together. "This is very thoughtful, sweetling. Speak more, then. What do you propose for the Greatwood?"

To see Ludo as itself has the alchemist bristling in ways that likely only Ronin will understand. Feathers curl down the base of his neck and into his curls as his shoulders and arms grow stiff with tension. It's protectiveness, though to anyone else it probably looks just like simple aggression. But for Remi who knows what it was Ludo had gone through and who had risked his life to make sure that it didn't happen to anyone else, seeing the herald in this form awakens something deep and surprisingly paternal in the Lullaby.

'Hello Ludo.' Remi offers, lowering his eyes and pulling in a breath to try and reduce the number of feathers sprouting around his neck. "We would not have ascended fluid poisoning the soil of the Greatwood, and so we do not wish to kill or wound any ascended who enter here. But...not unlike the handmines in Stormbreak, we wondered if the trees couldn't bind any ascended who try and enter? We would want to keep them protected somehow—" the trees he means, "—that the ascended couldn't simply slash their way through. And clever enough to capture ascended-hybrids as well as pure ascended."

"Do not fret, sweetling. The Deepfrost will be over before you know it," Ludo says to Remi, as if the feathers sprouting across his form are the result of the mere cold. Still, it tucks the kindling it has picked up into its rags, sitting itself cross-legged before the Lullaby and the gathered onlookers. "Very clever, to use the trees. They are quite sneaksy already, you see."

Gazing up at the snow-clogged canopies, Ludo hums to itself, then reaches out to grab a stick to draw obscure pictures in the snow and dirt. (One looks a bit like a manticore, one looks like an angry tree, and another is a stick man with fangs). "Okay. Here's what we're going to do..."

Remi has been given a Regional Quest for the Greatwood!

Tasks. There is no time limit. There are currently 11 active Greatwoodpeckers. This means 5 unique characters have to participate. Characters can participate more than once. Ronin must participate in at least 1 thread. Remi and Juniper must participate in 2.

1. 3 threads: one collecting fluid from a pure Ascended, one collecting fluid from an Ascended hybrid, one collecting fluid from an Ascended demigod (either natural or raised up by a god, doesn't matter).
2. A thread of 3 Greatwood...ians collecting water from The Drop.
3. A thread mixing the fluids with the water to dilute it.
4. A PQ of 4 Greatwooderrrrss? painting the fluid solution on the trees along the three main boards of the Greatwood (Sidhe Village, Wildwood, Stonesong). The thread will be split each time they enter into a new board.

Listening, Remi does his best not to let his mind run away with him. It would be too easy to get bogged down in the details and lose perspective of what was being asked of him—them—overall. Still, the alchemist hopes that someone is taking notes that they might ensure they have followed Ludo's instructions to the letter. Playful though the herald could be, Remi had seen before what disappointing the god would bring.

Reaching out, Remi adds a jagged mouth to the manticore so that it looked like it was snarling, before adding a few spoopy tree-faces of his own. "Thank you. I will let you know when it is done."
