So surprised is Mateo to hear Ever raise his voice that it absolutely does stop him in his tracks, the boy freezing with his friend's hand on his shoulder, and already he's slowly withdrawing his leg from the bag. "I'm okay," he says, feeling the need to reassure him, his smile as gentle as he can make it. "And yeah, maybe she can. I know how to make a dog and a tarantula and a butterfly with my hands, but that's it."
Dutifully, he gets himself out of the bag in full, though he does use Everest to keep balanced as he goes. "There," he says once he's finished, closing the bag and handing it off to his friend. "We'll arrange to go in a couple of days, then. Tomorrow you can come over and we'll make sure we've got everything we need."
And after that? Marny was about to learn that there was no such thing as ghosts.
