Melita
Eating fire is your ambition
to swallow the flame down
Gods, wouldn’t she like to chuck those rocks at his head. Or the earth. Or anything else within distance. She shifted her fingers over serrated edges and jumbled fringes, wanting them to be fangs and fire and everything cruel and hostile and feral; her lithe, slender frame threatening to unwind. “I trust Nate. Not her.” Not after becoming sick with the blight. Not after a raising of the dead. Not after so many gods damned things that had gone on – and certainly not with an impending war. The honeybee eventually felt like an inferno, and placed one of the stones back into the bag, far more carefully than intended – because then her eyes met his in a chiseled wake of gold and flame. “Why would she allow one of her strongest to not participate in a war for their survival? Why would she tuck him away, when he could be out there?” and her hand waved in various directions.

But it’s that next statement that truly set her teeth on fangs and frustration, leaning forward – an ominous vessel. “Why do you keep doing it?” All of these things, all of these schemes, all of this wheeling and dealing and forgoing all consequences until it stared him straight in the face, and blew back ten times harder. “You already had a deal. You already repaired the damage.” And then just opened up the wounds again and again and again – eventually people were going to stop bleeding for him.

if there's one thing the gods love, it's tragedy
Sunjata nods to Melita’s statement, swallowing against both his agreement and disagreement. He trusts Nate and if Nate trusted the Voice with his life, then Sunjata would too. But somewhere, deep down, he can remember the look the Voice had given him when they’d tried to cure Nate with the Frey water, bringing it to the Voice who couldn’t do anything with it but ask for Loren’s help – one that he had been unwilling to help with initially despite Sunjata’s attempts to nearly beg the past healer.

But that was in the past, and Sunjata shakes his head meeting her fiery, gilded eyes with cool steel of his own. “For survival perhaps.” That’s all Sunjata can think of. The fact that Nate may survive if he isn’t fighting – the fact that Nate had only wanted to grow stronger to protect himself and his family in the upcoming war, that he didn’t want to fight for the sake of fighting.

Suddenly, Melita leans forward and there’s venom on her tongue, her body poised like some kind of feral animal and all Sunjata can do is stare, to pinch his brows together a fraction, meeting her eyes with uncertain and confused ones of his own. “I had a deal with Safrin but she was never clear if it still would have counted after Nate wasn’t just Ascended anymore, but a demigod.” He answers it as bluntly as he can before his nostrils flare with the sharp inhale he takes. “I keep… Doing this, Melita, because I can’t lose him.” And in the grand scheme he thinks he’s doing his best. That’s all he’s ever tried to do.

Something drove out of her, a sharp, incessant thing, a force of derision seeking its way out – and she had to stand, snagging at the bag with her, moving to another spot so she didn’t raise a fist and punch him square in the nose. They didn’t need one more thing to break; and perhaps this shouldn’t have been a giant matter in the first place, but it kept growing, unrepentant and stupefying, bewildering and confusing, adding to so many aspects she’d yet to fully encounter.

Did he care to make deals for anyone else? What about the rest of his family? And while Nate mattered, held in the highest regard and a paragon for the Flood, where did all the others stand? Why hadn’t she heard of other individuals in the world, striving, begging, and pleading, for those across the divide to be saved?

She didn’t voice those though. Instead, she opened the satchel and chucked a fistful of rocks, listening to them smack against one another. Her voice didn’t dull, but didn’t roar either, a careful, modified flame when she looked back at him again. “Did you ever get it clarified?” Or was it not a simplistic query? Or had he dreaded the news, the noose? “Is Nate this codependent?” Had he sought out the Voice so Sunjata wouldn’t have to fall apart in the upcoming war?

Then the honeybee sighed, shaking her head, jaw clenching, fists digging into a larger piece of stone. “To me, it sounds like you don’t believe he can survive without your deals and support.”

And so the fire smolders to a flame again as she grabs the bag and moves on and Sunjata’s left empty handed, drawing himself to his full height, following after her with his eyes on the sparking orange and red hues of the lava in the distance. He conjures a small amount of water, to wet the ash from his hands, dropping it as he shakes his hands out of the water, listening to it splash and splatter against the dusty ground.

I didn’t. Because my experience with Safrin was terrible any time I thought of Nate or the Voice. I didn’t know what she’d do if I asked or doubted her.” He admits, running a now clean hand through his hair, tearing through the little knots in the dark waves as he does so. In reality, it was likely far better than the recent meeting with Safrin, but hindsight was twenty-twenty, was it not?

He sucks in a sharp breath as her fury reaches some kind of point, and his arms move to cross along his chest instead, watching as she continues to throw rocks into the bag, quite pointedly not looking at her face. “Nate says he’s talked to the Voice about it too.” But it was difficult, and Sunjata knew that even though Nate was strong and could protect them, there’s still that part of him much like Melita that finds it hard to trust the Voice in general too.

It’s not that I don’t think he can, Melita. I just want a fallback option if the Old Gods win this so I don’t have to watch him wither to death if there’s no way to save him from her.” If there’s no way to save him from the Voice and her absence, the last thing Sunjata wanted was to watch as Nate grew feral, loss of fluid and solely on blood for however long that could last until he stopped completely. "You follow Ludo after all. The one that I recall has sent out missions to take the Ascended out." He points out.

So he hadn’t asked. Just went on assumptions. Her nostrils flared and every ounce of her body seemed to contract and coil into something barely contained – her eyes staring out over the lava rivulets, wondering when she’d turn to infernos and ash too. She moved onward, no longer crouching or kneeling or bending to anyone or anything, marching across cracks and crevices, passing through sheets and shale. “And what did the Voice say?” She hadn’t heard of any major meltdowns or life-altering events – though maybe Nate didn’t make it as public as his counterpart.

Her head shook and her locks were wild fringes of embers again – another hastily blown breath, wishing she could breathe fire like dragons, so she could scorch so many things out of existence. “And in the meantime, look what happens,” she gestured towards him – a man who’d been beaten and kicked around and slashed into portions and pieces for all these options. “Hopefully it works out for you this time. ” She splayed her hands outward, one of the rocks flying out into the pits, a long, labored, frustrated shrug.

And then he tried to turn it on her - which incited a derisive, embittered laugh. Nice try, pal. “This isn’t about me.” She hadn’t been breaking apart relationships and her family, grasping at straws, undermining attempts, flickering away loyalties, or bringing a child into the world for a deal that almost immediately fell to pieces. “And not once has Ludo asked me to do any of that. Not one fucking time.”

He didn’t say, really.” Sunjata murmurs quietly – trying to rack his brain around the things Nate had said. But when it came to those conversations, they were tough for the both of them, and Nate had never really been the most forthcoming with it and Sunjata hadn’t blamed him for it. This news, though, of demiing for Frey, had been welcome in comparison to the bombshell of Kamaria with Safrin.

Even the bombshell of Safrin asking Sunjata to be her demigod.

As she gestures toward him Sunjata can’t help but to roll his eyes, a sigh leaving him – figuring it best to let that conversation die in favor for the Ludo one, Sunjata’s jaw feathering all that much more. “No, it hasn’t. But what if it does? What if when the war sparks it gives you a list and on that list is Nate’s name. What then?” He counters, his stomach feeling oily with having to bring it up but needing her answer anyway – his steel gaze expectant as he focuses on her more intensely.
