Melita
they should have checked the ashes
of the women they burned alive
They made their return from the Climb in decent fashion – only lightly smelling of fire and brimstone. With embers in her heart and flames in her soul, she angled along the outcropping of rocks, Fangorn under one arm, and the satchel carrying everything else she needed in the other. She’d placed the nest purposefully along precarious reaches, ensuring nothing and no one would be reaching the collected filaments of ash, soot, and rock, and was content to find, other than a few wind-strewn pieces, it remained the same as she’d left it.

Settling upon her knees in front of the area, the flurry of excitement unfurled through her fingers as she went over the loam again, smoothing out the surface, breathing in little flickers of exuberance and wonder. “This could be it,” she murmured to her faithful gourd, who rumbled some of his own contentment and acclaim, vines shaking upward, before he helped in leveling out the next too.

Thereafter, the honeybee tugged open her satchel, revealing the final proportions. “Sorry, none of this is for you,” when she saw the alighted gaze of the pumpkin. “Later though, I promise.” He’d been an excellent help, and wasn’t to be outdone or left behind. Then she put out the cooked ramphire meat from the Lava Pits, and all the thoughts floating along that particular conversation.

And waited.

Torchline is warm compared to, say, Halo in Leafchange, but it's far from the long and scorching days that have passed. Most creatures that adore the fire and warmth are born and grow during that season, so for one to hatch now is not ideal.

All of this might explain why Melita gets a visitor to her nest. (Almost like Ludo predicted it, or could feel the nearness of death).

Regardless, a bronze speck from one of the windowsills of the Aumakua soon flaps and wends its way down towards the honeybee girl and her companion, screeching a weak sound of hunger. The hatchling is cold and brand new, barely the length of Melita's palm, but there's fire in its belly yet.

The screech drew her head upwards, following the streak of bronze alight briefly in the sky, and her heart ached instantly. “Grab some of the towels and blankets,” she crooned and whispered to Fangorn, who must have understood, as the vampire gourd rushed into her satchel and began using his vines to withdraw the objects, peering curiously around.

“Well, aren’t you something,” she murmured again, bright and cheery, trying to shield the youth from any haranguing winds. Wrapping the child up in the balms, alms, of warmth extended by Fangorn, and in the angles of arms, she curled up before the nest, beginning to peel away the pieces of meat, offering them out to the hatchling.

Fully focused on the meat, at first Melita will find the tiny hatchling to be very cross and upset with the intrusion, weakly clawing and biting at the blankets and setting the corner of one on fire with an indignant snuff from its snout.

But then, of course, food is held out, and instantly tiny jaws fasten around the offerings, scarfing them down as quickly as they are able without choking. And once those are gone, they are already sniffing around for more, letting out a hoarse screech of impatience.

A sudden bout of mist begins to swirl rather charmingly around your heels. It’s gone nearly as quickly as it came, followed by the indistinct sound of faraway laughter.

Sighing but in an indulgent, already smitten way, the youth smothered the portions of the blanket caught in the heralds and brief flickers of flames. Fangorn grumbled something incoherent, clearly trying to peek over the edges of the layers, and Melita shifted so the little one didn’t feel so tightened and held.

The meat was a great hit, and so she laughed, a singsong wonder, before snagging at more. Even the gourd generously offered up some on twisting, turning vines, so that there was a supply at the ready – the honeybee taking each portion in her fingers and pulling them apart into tinier bits for the youth to snag and eat. “There, you can have all you want,” was a soft murmur, trying to ignore the sudden bout of mist surrounding; the gale of laughter following.

The mist earns a screech of outrage, a challenge to just try to come and take what the hatchling has rightfully found. But of course the mist soon disappears and it's just meat and blankets and soft cooing, and the tiny dragon feasts to her heart's content. Indeed, as Melita continues to speak, she'll feel a familiar tug at her mind, a presence snapping into place to join alongside Fangorn.

Melita has gained a dragon companion! The companion will be added to Melita's profile.

“You’re perfect,” the honeybee whispered into the wind and blankets, towards a dragon beginning to wrap her threshold into the bounty of connected and conjoined souls. “You both are,” as she gazed at Fangorn too, and they were a collective force, mighty and fierce, ferocious and enduring, strong and unbreakable, in ways that even Melita couldn’t even begin to describe. She just knew, in the swell of her heart and the unmistakable melee of intertwined bonds.

“Let’s get you home,” and with that she rose, delicately holding the hatchling in the grasp of towels and blankets, while the gourd bobbed along her feet, and the meat was a festive, billowing element to the rest of their movements. She could ignore the howls of laughter or the echoes of the sea for another day – when they’d be nestled and safe along the outcropping of rocks and the promise of tomorrow.
