The sound of iron shots is stuck in my head
The thunder of the drums dictates
Eventually, time wore away at the festivities, and the dusk gave way to morning distinction; shimmers along the horizon, winter hues painting fixtures against carousels and kiosks, a sleeping lull to how long the distinctions remained. So too did he, an imposing figure lingering on the outskirts, going through lists of items he’d managed to find intriguing or interesting, the notepad in his hands fresh with sketches and labels of notions and ideas. Creating them here wouldn’t have helped – he wouldn’t be able to carry them over the eventual, inevitable plunge and sleep back to the mountains.

But for now, he could settle upon a nearby rock, listening to the lull of the ebb and flow, to the tide rolling in slowly, along the outcropping of grass poking through snow inlets, of an ease to his breath. Slow and steady images – some weaponry, some gifts, flickered through his mind, and he jotted down the details, pondering over columns and pillars in the meantime too, how they’d hold cannons and how the sun would reach and scatter and distort. Hundreds of modicums alight in his machinations, instead of the rush of conversation, to the milling, departing crowd, and with no companions to discuss anything with, he was on his own – to write, to mull, to persist.

He spotted Deimos a little while ago, a part of him hoping that the Sword wouldn’t depart so soon before he has a chance to give him a gift. Besides, it wasn’t like Sunjata despised Deimos – not like Deimos likely despised Sunjata – but he had a gift to bring not just from himself, though he thinks it might help to give something else alongside the letter the Harpy had given to the Flood in case he made some random trek to Halo.

This was easier, though, and Sunjata had run home to get the letter and the items, before returning to find the Sword perched along a rock, writing within some kind of book. So he approaches slowly, no shifts or weapons of any kind on display. “Hey, Deimos?” He calls out a fair distance away, wishing to not encroach and turn some long burning ire his way. “I’ve got something for you.” He adds, as if it might help the other man from refraining from smiting him where he stood.

And once Deimos did turn to look, he’d find the Flood standing a relatively safe distance away, a bundle in his arms and a letter in his hand.

The distance didn’t hide the familiar voice beckoning across the landscape, and for an instant, the Sword froze. An intense dislike, a myriad of bitterness, an edge of rancor shifted within his chest; inherent and contemptuous, and as he raised his head towards the Flood, the level of indifference measured on his features might have been just as lethal as a furrowed brow. It was the contemplative fringe of a predator, narrowing his gaze, contemplating options.

Destruction – he’d promised it before. Warnings. Another ominous declaration they both knew he’d keep.

His eyes narrowed; a silent assertion of power and demolition should Sunjata meander any closer. “I doubt you have anything I need,” though his piercing stare slid to bundles and letters; jaw clenching, feathering, withholding any other pernicious ventures. For the moment.

The narrowing of Deimos’ gaze certainly keeps Sunjata’s distance. He remembers the threats, nearly clear as day, and truthfully he wouldn’t be doing this – he’d stay away, keep his distance, pretend the other didn’t exist just as Deimos did to him time and time again. But he does have something Deimos likely wants. “I don’t know if you need it, but you may want it.” He offers a bit awkwardly, shrugging a scarred shoulder, bundled by the clothes he wears.

It’s a letter from Kiada.” His accent fits her name like a glove (they’ve come from similar spaces, after all. A similar world with varying continents of which Kiada’s name had originated). “And I thought perhaps you might want some of these for Halo.” He lifts the arm carrying the bundle, though most of it is hidden, containing a warm blanket with a few sets of throwing knives (Kiada had given him the idea, of course).

But he still doesn’t move forward until Deimos decides – almost as if the scars that dance up his side from hip to shoulder were aching in the Sword’s presence.

It was easier to pretend the Flood didn’t exist; no longer involving himself in Ru’s endless relationship debacles, he would only hear the whispers of Sunjata’s latest poor choices on the wind. Others would comment on his methods – and the Sword would shake his head, clench his jaw, and wonder just how far things would flicker and fall apart before everyone else realized what he had long ago.

The only thing that changed his features at all was the mention of Kiada. A short interval of widened eyes, until they notched back into their narrowed haze. Quite frankly, he wouldn’t want the Harpy anywhere near this fiend, but with life spiraling around them at the moment, there was likely no avoiding it. Blankets and knives were not an issue. He could make those with a snap of his fingers.

The letter though. He couldn’t do that.

The monolith still made no movement. “What do you want for them?”

The letter gets his attention. And the Flood is half tempted to try and repair things somewhat between them by saying he doesn’t need anything — but that’s often what got him into his messes. Too forgiving. Too many chances. So he stays his distance, appraises Deimos curiously as he clutches the items in his hands, debates between himself and everything else.

Something I might be able to contain fire within for transport. It’s for a quest from Frey.” He adds on in case it helps, as if to point it in the direction of the Old Gods field of view versus an attempt to burn things to the ground for the New Gods side. Though, truth be told, burning things has never been in Sunjata’s playbook. Many others have done it to him but he’d just as soon flood a place out rather than spread the tendrils of flame.

But his request is made, and he steels himself to wait for the inevitable denial from Deimos, to call his bluff because he still intends on giving the items to him with or without it.

The damage had long since been done – and the Sword held no trust for the Flood. Not after multitudes of incidents, not after a multitude of choices that segmented in death and delusion. So to anyone else, the statement might have seemed genuine, the Old God name thrown out there so the General might be a bit more compliant. But he’d lived here for too long, had embarked amidst and amongst too many manipulative means, to not remain skeptical and dismissive of Sunjata’s antics.

His head tilted, still predator, still carnivore, still an infernal beast brewing with power and might; the dangerous, piercing slate of his eyes pinpointed straight upon the demigod. “And will this quest also benefit the Voice?” Connections embossed with Nate, with the Ascended who’d marched straight into Stormbreak and drove Towers downward, who’d flown into Halo on the wings of his dragon shift – the speculations were rampant. Because he wouldn’t be lending out any of his skills, any of his incantations, in that wake any longer.

He should have anticipated the question, and perhaps in a way he had. He just wasn’t truly sure how to answer it. In a way it benefitted them all, but also not wholly – because those in a nullified zone, regardless of the outcome, if the Voice were lost then perhaps the Ascended within would be lost, too. “Yes and no.” He decides to answer somewhat honestly.

She’s complying with Frey’s wishes. I'm helping them create a safe haven for everyone – Ascended included. Abilities, upgrades, shifts, et cetera will be nullified within during the war. But if the Voice doesn’t make it through the war…” A shrug, an answer all in one. Ascended would be welcome within the safe haven that Frey crafts, yet whether or not they’d be able to survive once it was over is another story. “I can’t say what will happen to the Ascended within when it's over.” Because nobody would know.

But perhaps the fact that Frey is crafting it and the Voice had agreed to lend her lightning for a space of optimistic protection was worth something at the end of the day.

Deimos listened – keen and observant, speculative and deciphering, calculating the angles, the quandaries, the inquiries mulling and musing about his mind. It sounded too easy, to breeze away and say the Voice would readily comply to something that could be detrimental to her kin – or that anyone could have faith in a being who’d already sent out monsters and plagues to the world. Survival and fortitude had cast him in a dubious, cynical cycle of existence – which might’ve been how he’d managed to endure anything at all.

The rumbling, answering tones were surrounded, pervading, in doubt and disbelief. “How do you know she will stay true to her word?” The Sword could picture individuals stripped down to nothing to defend themselves, while the Ascended maintained their prowess, their prestige, their abilities – permitting opportunities for endless massacres. It had already occurred in LongNight debacles.

He didn’t trust any of the sentiments; the vague wrinkle to his nose hint enough.

He sees the way his answer dissatisfies Deimos – but there’s nothing much more he can offer. The question is one that he’s thought about himself but found relief in the fact that Frey was the one creating it - likely working with Rae to make it a reality. And to have the Voice’s ingredient required? Might just be the kicker it takes to ensure they’re nullified, too.

Because she isn’t the one creating the haven. Frey is.” He answers once again quite honestly, before he appraises Deimos again with an almost curious look. “Frey told me what they needed and the Voice gave me her part. I trust that with all of it, it will work out exactly as it's intended.” He had always found it difficult to trust Safrin, but if there were one of the deities he didn’t have to guess or try to understand or tip toe around?

It was Frey.

He snorted at the answer – satisfactory enough for the moment, but not without a dig thrown in. “Does it ever work out the way it was intended?” Especially in situations like this, or anything involving the Flood.

Rolling his eyes, he finally motioned into something more than a predacious statue, tucking away his parchment into deep pockets, sipping at the dregs of remaining hot chocolate perched upon the rock. Eventually that too was diminished, and he sighed, bothered he had to help this individual at all. Something like yearning to aid others without assisting him made the whole thing much more cumbersome, and in the end, he simply furrowed his brow and ensured his thoughts on the matter were clear.

The object crafted between his upraised hands and palms was simple: Sunjata would receive nothing orchestrated, detailed, or ornamental, as Deimos would’ve done for many others. Instead, there was a brief, gruff message carved at the bottom, which the Flood likely wouldn’t see until much long after, as the fire pot came into fruition and being. Created and contorted for a purpose, and not much more. “There,” he hastened, which was probably the only warning he’d grant before hurling it in Sunjata’s direction.

Maybe it’d hit him in the head.

No, it doesn’t always work out as intended. At least, it hadn’t when he’d followed Safrin. His intentions had often gotten warped and changed, twisted into a manipulated construction of exactly what he didn’t want. With Frey, though? He hasn’t experienced that yet – if anything it had been bluntly, exactly what he’d asked for. So it’s with that that Sunjata carries his hope that this would work out exactly as has been explained.

Of course, nobody would know until it happened. If he managed to get it done in time.

He raises a brow, watching as Deimos crafts something for him to contain the fire within, and a split second later watches as it essentially is flung toward him – Sunjata floundering to catch it in order to ensure it doesn’t break. He doesn’t notice the words on the inside, not yet, but he will as soon as he leaves and it’ll spark a little snicker. For now, though, he catches it, nods his thanks to Deimos, and instead of approaching or tossing Deimos’ items toward him, he sets it down, the letter nestled atop the bundle of blankets and throwing knives.

Thanks.” It’s short and to the point, and with the gift in hand, he turns and walks away, keeping his presence from souring Deimos’ evening any further.
