The weakness we left behind
seems to be getting stronger
Along with Flowerbirth, with the sun, with the return of warmth to the world, came certain obligations. The first — attending to the living — always weighed most heavily on him. He had done his penance in the settlement, found his parents still alive, learned what news there was to learn. That was the hard part. He was never certain which was worse: the missing, or those still lingering behind. He was done with both for the moment, at least. He had returned home with no intention of leaving again, and his favorite part of Flowerbirth awaited him.

Throughout most of the year, Nathaniel kept an astonishing number of potted plants inside his house. Most of them purely because he enjoyed their company. Some, though, were temporary residents. These, small sprouts clustered together in trays, now waited on the porch. They were useful plants: potatoes and tomatoes and squash and leafy greens. Nathaniel never tilled enough soil to call his property a real farm — he earned his bread and butter in the woods behind the house, for the most part — but he kept a garden through the good weather. Something about turning over the earth and watching the plants come up was heartening. And he had no need to trade for someone else's vegetables when he had his own.

A sunny morning found him out to one side of the house, a shovel in hand, turning over the earth and carefully shuttling the seedlings from their temporary home on the porch to new, permanent homes in the space he called his garden.

Adam may have been in a new world, but some things stayed the same; his sleep pattern was less of a pattern and more of a random series of dots and lines, hours and days and nights spontaneously filled with rest. He liked to pretend this was just a part of his fun personality, another element of unpredictability entirely calculated and intended. In reality, it was the result of several illegal substances taking their toll and nightmares waking him up at bad hours.

No one else was to know this.

Casually as he could, keeping up his persona of 'just-rolled-out-of-bed', he slumped out of bed and walked to the kitchen, fiddling with small papers and 'herbs' in his fingers. Once he had something rolled he lit it on the fireplace; then taking a drag from it, stepped out onto the porch. Nathaniel wasn't there to be seen, but Adam could hear digging and see a lot of pots.

Stepping around the corner, he waved to Nathaniel and took the cigarette from his mouth to speak. The smoke would smell odd, sweet and with a sharp aftertaste. "G'Morning." (It was morning, right?) "How's your uh...plant...sorting going?"

At some point near the end of the process, Adam slouched around the corner. There he stood, haloed by a thin stream of smoke, the picture of dysfunction. He almost made Nate feel put-together, a feat at once impressive and pathetic. "Is it?" Nate asked wryly. He paused in his work and straightened up to regard the other man. "Not sure you know what 'morning' is."

His eyes fell to the makeshift cigarette in Adam's hand, and though his eyebrows lifted, he made no comment on it. He was glad to see the Outlander taking the habit outside, though he didn't really understand it. For all Adam's lack of regular schedule, it had yet to cause Nate any trouble. He found himself hard-pressed to complain, though he wondered if maybe he should.

Instead, he dusted off his hands and gestured at the garden, now a neat little series of seedlings in rows of rich, dark soil. Nate was nearly finished, just a few plants left to introduce to the soil. "You uh, feel like helping?" he asked. It was not quite so gentle a request as it sounded - more the beginning of a politely couched demand - but Nate was not old enough or angry enough or sure of himself enough to start out with barking orders. And despite his initial resistance, he didn't find the Outlander to be a particularly horrible roommate. Just - weird. A little lazy. Nate wasn't even sure what Adam spent most of his time doing, but he had somehow managed to get his hands on a little dragon, which he did not seem to be neglecting, so apparently he did - something.

"Well hey, maybe whenever I wake up is just morning." The world did revolve around him, after all. Adam took a long drag from his smoke then held it out in his fingers, tapping ash over the edge of Nathaniel's porch. He half expected some kind of reprimand for this but none came so he brought it back to his lips. Already he could feel the desired effect, a numbing balm around his mind.

As Nathaniel gestured to the garden Adam nodded in a way he thought came off as appreciative, not really sure how else to respond. It was some plants in a row. He had never been one amazed by the processes of nature, unless they ended up in his mug or roll-up.

Did he want to help? Well, given he was taking the guy's bed, he couldn't really refuse (besides Nathaniel had a habit of barking out each word like a final order). "...Sure. What do I gotta do? How--Oh. Hang on." Feeling Coffee's sudden confusion in the house upon waking without him there, Adam sent out a signal to him and held up his arm. After a moment of loud scattering noises within the house, a black smudge shot out from the door and perched on Adam's offered elbow.

"There we go. Okay." Kneeling down, Coffee moving to step onto his shoulders, Adam waited for instructions.

Adam's carefree attitude was almost enviable. Nate only raised an eyebrow as he shrugged off the first question. Until it affected Nate's life, it wasn't his problem. So long as Adam showed up to lend a hand often enough, and didn't smoke in the house, Nate found he didn't particularly care. He wasn't the Outlander's life coach or even his friend.

He could give him a little shit for it, though. That was necessary. "Must be nice. Everyone setting their schedule according to yours." He was pleased when Adam agreed to help, though it did not particularly show on his face. Much as Nate pretended to loathe company, he liked explaining his hobbies. Planting was good. Gardens were patient, structured things, forced in no direction by threat or haste.

"You can start by getting rid of that," Nate instructed. Smoking several feet away was one thing. Smoking right next to him while he worked was another thing entirely. Nate paused, eyebrows raised, when told to hang on, but soon the little black dragon appeared, and he accepted the pause was for good reason.

Ignoring it for the moment, Nate gestured at the last tray of seedlings at the edge of the plot, and then the series of small holes left at the end of one row. "Simple enough for an Outlander to figure out," he deadpanned. "Seedlings go in the holes. Cover the roots gently with soil. Then water them." It's good for you, he almost said, but managed to stop himself just in time, embarrassed by my the near-slip. He waited a beat, watchful, to ensure Adam complied properly with his directions. Nate was happy to correct him if he went off course, in this endeavor if not in life at large.

If Adam did oblige willingly, Nate would finally indulge his own curiosity in an attempt at conversation. "What did you name him?" If not, he would merely stand by and correct, his features never shifting from their chara
cteristic frown.

"S'What happens when you have my natural magnetism." Adam grinned with a shrug.

With a roll of his eyes he dropped his smoke to the ground and twisted the toe of his boot over it, smashing the ash down into the wood of the porch. With this blatant disregard of Nate's property aside he actually followed the instructions he was given well, able to plant seeds despite his carefully constructed persona of careless incompetence.

"Oh? His name's Coffee. Cos uh...I heard another guy named his dragon Sugar. So it's kinda...y'know. Thematic. And he's black 'n' all." With a finger going up to scratch under Coffee's chin, he continued to plant, actually finding he quite liked the work when he got into it. It was relaxing, easy; something with a definite goal and end in mind.

"So...you got anyone else to be planting flowers with? Y'know, family, a girlfriend, boyfriend....lover of no particular gender...anyone like that?"
