He hadn’t spent as much time in his foxform as of late, with all the work that needed human thumbs and a voice and other such accessories to civilized life. Which, as he realized now, padding through the Glade on four dainty paws, was a bit of a shame. Priorities shifted sometimes along with shape. His mind remained his own, but seeing the world from so much lower down and with so much more emphasis on scent gave him a different perspective that he’d been lacking.

The scents of Flowerbirth, for instance, were so overwhelming that he could almost forget about the attack on the Spire and the loss of Ronin and the conflict that was brewing between the old people of Caido and the new ones.

Almost.

But it was enough, at least, to give him a little break and try to clear his head before he went back to poring over the histories and books that Safrin had given them. He check on his den to make sure no one else had tried to move in and padded onwards towards the Oasis to get a drink, a little excited to see what new growths looked like around the watering hole.

He’d been expecting flowers and vines and bushes. He hadn’t been expecting the long pink worm that was slithering along the edge of the pond, bigger than anything he’d seen before. Three feet long and a few inches thick, it squirmed along with a mouth that burrowed a trail in the dirt as it went and a slime trail in its wake.

Caught be surprise and fascinated by the monstrous worm, the white fox padded closer, sniffing overtime as he investigated it. It smelled like a worm but also more than a little like food, and his stomach rumbled in response. Tentatively he reached out a paw to tap the creature, wrinkling his nose as his pads came back damp with slime, but the worm twitched in a satisfying way and scrunched away from him. Ears perking forward in curiosity he tapped it again, pleased to see how much like an earthworm it was. Dancing forward he barked at it – a sound it proceeded to ignore, lacking ears – and then gave chase as it started wriggling away at a good clip.

So caught up was he in playing with the little creature that he didn’t notice the much bigger worm that was sliding silently up behind him, easily five feet long and more than capable of squashing the leggy fox flat as it reared up to body slam the little mammal away from its ‘puddle.’

Rexanna hadn’t truly been to the Oasis before, and she had found that on her walk to get away from everything that had been going on, it seemed as good a time as ever. It wasn’t frozen over by the harsh winter months, and instead might be a pleasant place to be. A place to have a good time to think for herself, and try to come to terms with where her status in this world was located. Perhaps she’d go and find Rory at some point and they could talk about it – level it out, understand each other. But gods she wanted him to apologize to her.

Later – later would be better. When she wasn’t still fuming about it the longer she thought about it. Perhaps it was for the better for all of them.

She had been lost in her thoughts, not paying any attention at all to the world around her as she trudged her way through puddles and mud toward the glimmering surface in the distance. It wasn’t until she heard a bark in the distance that she came to reality and grew intensely curious at what had caused it. She began to follow where she thought the sound had come from, luckily not taking too long to spot a unique white fox and not a raven, playing with a smallish worm?

A smile began to form on her lips briefly before she noticed the thing behind the fox – a worm nearly the size of herself, hunting the poor fox. “MOVE!” She shouted, hoping the sound might scare the fox into moving away from the creature behind it. Immediately, she wanted to run in, to fight it off before she remembered that she had magic and one she could use to attempt to inflict harm. She raised a hand and aimed it at the worm, shooting out a large firework and watched as it sparked and glimmered in a minimal arc.

Gods, she hoped it hit.

He hadn't been expecting a shout, but he hadn't survived as long as he had by freezing. Moreover it was in a voice that was familiar to him, and he obeyed without hesitation, gathering his muscles and leaping over his prey just as the world exploded behind him in fire and light and eerie silence.

Rexanna's firework exploded just as the worm was arching downwards, its toothless mouth gaping wide and inadvertently closing over the spark just as it ignited in a blossom of fiery destruction. Its head expanded, glowing from within and almost beautiful for one frozen moment before the conflagration burst free, colored sparks filling the clearing around the Oasis with a joyous celebration of chicken-scented death.

Jigano hit the ground running, feeling the heat of the expanding explosion behind him and racing into the water to outrun the singing he feared was behind him if he slowed down. Only when he had submerged himself did he turn to watch the last of the - firework? - drifting down and burning out harmlessly against the water and spring-damp greenery around them. His original prey continued to flee, but the large Magna Vermis that had been sneaking up on him coiled and writhed fantastically in its final throes, and the fox realized how close he had come to danger. Behind the worm was a woman he recognized instantly, and sodden ears perked forward as he padded back out of the water and gave himself a good shake, considering morosely how wretched he looked when soaking wet, with his fluffy fur plastered against his much leaner - alright, skinnier - body. He could hardly reproach Rexanna for saving his life, however, and he started to pad towards her to offer his gratitude--

But something smelled delicious and he paused as his stomach rumbled. A chunk of smoldering worm meat lay nearby and he paused to sniff it and then lick it curiously. A moment later the meat was gone, and the fox was licking his whiskers, somehow managing to look a bit embarrassed as he slanted a blue-eyed gaze at Rexanna from beneath half-flattened ears.

Rexanna didn’t have great control over her fireworks, and after she had sent out the large flash of light, she wondered if perhaps it might miss and harm the fox instead. She was usually very good about figuring out the pros and cons of things before she did them, but when faced with the moment she disregarded any previous thoughts and simply acted – only to have a slight amount of anxiety as she watched the fox move and the firework barrel toward its intended target.

It felt almost like slow motion as the firework entered the worm’s gaping mouth, disappearing inside it before it exploded. And for a moment, Rexanna thought it was beautiful, the way the light shifted from inside the creature before it was blown apart. Her head tilted slightly, and she calmed her breath and beating heart. She turned to spot the fox in the water, as if afraid he might have had the flame from her firework on him. But she offered him a small roguish grin of victory.

The fox hadn’t run off yet, and she found herself watching as he approached, suddenly distracted by the vibrant scent in the area from the fallen worm. Her head tilted toward the worm, but she approached it still, bending to inspect it further. And when she did so, she noticed the scent increased. She watched as the fox approached too, sniffing a piece of the Magna Vermis only to lick it after – and if Rexanna would have blinked she would have missed the entire thing being swallowed. A small chime of a laugh left her lips as she made a space on the ground to sit and pulled out a knife from her boot to cut off a few more pieces of the charred, cooked worm and tossed them one by one to the fox. "Here." She said as she worked the worm.

You’re a great listener.” She remarked to the fox, wondering if perhaps he belonged to someone (much like that white raven she had seen before, who had helped her plant), and she wondered if perhaps it was mere coincidence that she’d come across the both of them.

Rexanna had a lovely laugh, Jigano decided again, licking the chicken-flavored worm-juices from his chops. He probably should have done more to examine the meat before eating it, but he thought he'd seen something on the notice board about it and it certainly smelled like food. It was a little embarrassing to be seen giving in to his animal instincts, but he'd been taking poor care of himself lately. Not sleeping well, with the loss of his dreams, and an accompanying loss of appetite as the stress of everything that was happening within the barrier left him fighting against time he didn't have enough of to find answers for people who didn't necessarily want them.

Hence today's trip to clear his head... and his swift pounce on something that actually woke his appetite, no matter how disgusting the creature it came from might have been before the fire cooked it.

Well, part of it. The front part, at least.

Of course he should have realized that Rexanna would be pragmatic and, no matter her glowing beauty, unafraid to get her hands dirty. Though he couldn't help but notice that the char and slime didn't seem to stick to her at all. It was only a moment's notice, however, as another chunk of worm landed near him, tossed by her lovely hand. It was conveniently bite-sized, and his ears perked forward as he snapped it up. For a moment he forgot about his wet and bedraggled appearance, happily partaking of the treats his friend was feeding him.

Her compliment was what brought him up short, suddenly uncertain as her words echoed down his memory to a day in a garden, and the seeds they had planted together. He might remember it, and the conversation they had shared after helping Bastien... but she didn't know who stood before her now. She was just being kind to an animal, or a stranger, and guilt had him whining, ears flattening and looking somehow even more pathetic for being dripping wet.

The worm's death throes might have stilled, but they hadn't gone unnoticed. It had sent tremors through the earth, and those vibrations had let others know that their Great Puddle was at risk. Though the sky was clear, if they listened carefully they might hear the quiet rumble of what sounded like distant thunder...

She was enjoying feeding the fox, cutting off little pieces here and there to toss to the creature and watch as he grew full. She couldn’t deny the interesting smell that came from the charred bits, how it smelled like chicken and reminded her of the vampiric gourds she had roasted with Melita just before the shift in seasons. How the gourds, despite their sharp teeth and feisty nature, had tasted sweet and delicious like pumpkins when they bit into them. Perhaps this creature was similar – a distracting outer bit with a wonderful inside.

It would certainly make finding food easier.

She continued to cut off bit by bit before she was left with the part that hadn’t been charred or cooked by her magic, and when she went to wipe the blade off in the grasses to her side, she had noticed that none of the mud or dirt from the worm had transferred. She could still almost feel it there, like an oily sheen, but to the eye it was completely clean. Just another bit of the glamour that intrigued her so far. She made a mental note to thank Frey somehow and someway for whatever it was they had gifted her.

But her head tilted to him as he began to whine, concern sparking in her eyes that perhaps the fox had been hurt in some way, perhaps too hungry to realize it. “Are you hurt?” She questioned before the silence wafted over them and she heard what sounded like a far off rumble. She stood immediately, her eyes scanning the area again. “Do you hear that?” She questioned to the fox, uncertain if he’d acknowledge her question. But animals here had been strange, especially the Luxere, vampiric gourds, and these worms. And if a bird had listened to her instructions before, who’s to say this fox wouldn’t either?

No, he wasn't hurt, but he was uncertain how to tell her that he was her friend Jigano, and he was dripping wet and growing a bit chilly in the early spring breeze. He shivered, caught between a metaphorical rock and a hard place, but before he could decide on an answer Rexanna spoke again and his ears perked up again, swiveling to find the direction of the thunder. An approaching spring storm?

No... the thunder wasn't quieting any, and besides, his delicate paws detected a growing tremor in the earth. On the alert now he gathered himself and leapt to cross the distance between himself and Rexanna, circling behind her ankles as his wet hackles tried to rise and he growled to the east. Half-crouched, he saw the earth seem to undulate as a hillock of mud approached them, squirming and writing along the edge of the Oasis.

Wait. That wasn't mud...

He yipped in concern, then bounded out in front of Rexanna, snarling protectively as the half dozen Magna Vermis became clear amidst the tangle of wriggling bodies. They ranged from a mere two feet long up to one nearly as large as the one the Abandoned had killed, drawn by the tremors of something heavy falling beside the water - their former brethren - and determined to chase any intruders away from their Great Puddle by whatever means it took.

She didn’t know of the turmoil that went on within Jigano. In Rexanna’s mind, he was simply a pale fox who perhaps belonged to someone to be so understanding of her commands. To not be fearful of humans, as well. But as she (in a way, rhetorically) asked him if he heard something, she looked around while Jigano’s ears twitched, and he gathered himself to jump toward her and circle her – growling to the east where Rexanna’s head now turned.

Then there was movement, and Rexanna squinted as if it might help her see better. At first, it looked like mud. But then, six of those same worms varying in sizes and lengths appeared from the mud. One, nearly the size of her. Her eyes widened and she stepped back for a moment, regarding the scene before her and the pale fox that stood on guard. “Shit.” She said, gripping onto her knife a bit harder.

Rexanna reached for the firework magic, but it felt empty after using her first large one ever. She grit her teeth and glanced to the fox. Suddenly, in her hand the simple knife became a longer, sharper survival knife of sorts. “Run, or fight? You choose.” She said to the fox, turning the larger knife in her hand slightly as if she were waiting. Her eyes slipped to the fox with a wicked gleam, wondering what he might pick.

Sure, there were large ones, but there were six of them. Between her and the fox, she imagined they could handle them so long as she didn’t get eaten.

He heard Rexanna swear, and fervently agreed with her assessment. This wasn't an ideal situation, but he knew too little about the worms to know if running would be wise, or only encourage them to give chase. Though, for that matter, he didn't know enough about the worms to know if they even had vitals, or where to strike to find them. The heads, apparently, as Rex's firework had shown, and he glanced back at her with a faint whine that was almost a question.

She was ready, fierce and proud, and Jigano had to admit that he wasn't exactly proud of himself for considering running from worms. Sure, they were bigger than him...

But they were still worms.

Maybe they could climb a tree if things got hairy? Er... slimy?

Then there was no more time for thinking as the Magna Vermis reached them. The biggest of their number flung itself at the body of its slain brethren but landed short, slamming into the earth with an unpleasant squelching sound. One of the medium-sized worms had better aim, striking the corpse squarely but bouncing off the much larger ex-worm and wriggling in confusion as it tried to reorient itself.

Unfortunately that still left four worms that focused on the smaller but more mobile intruders. Rexanna would find the two smallest worms striking at her ankles with aggressive intent. One of them only managed a glancing blow, leaving a smear of sticky slime on her boot, but the other managed to strike squarely, bruisingly hard, and began to twine itself around her leg in mindless fury.

Jigano had problems of his own as the other two mid-sized worms focused on him. The first to reach him lunged from the mud with a wet sucking sound that had him inwardly cringing as he jumped to avoid it, landing on its slippery head and using his black claws to pin and hold it down. Its partner tried to headbutt the place he had just been, missing the fox but crowding closer to Rexanna even as the fox snarled and bit down on what he assumed was his worm's neck. He got a mouthful of mud and slime for his trouble, but also managed to remove a significant chunk of flesh as he shook his head violently, and the Magna Vermis beneath him spasmed wildly in its final throes.

It felt like slow motion as she watched the worms gather toward them, as one lunged out toward it’s fallen friend and landed short. Rexanna cringed silently at the sound that came with it, and she watched while a second worm attempted a similar idea only to bounce of all things off the worm and tried to reorient itself. For a moment, Rexanna thought perhaps to attack that one that was confused, hoping to aim at it in its confusion.

Yet before she could manage to attack the medium sized worm, she felt a surprisingly sharp munch on her ankles. One, glancing off her but she could still feel the slime from where it had been – she couldn’t yet tell if it was slime or blood. The next attacked harder, and she could feel the tender bruising on her ankle as she stepped back in an attempt to get away from it. But it had intertwined itself. She momentarily forgot about the fox as she gripped the knife handle harder, trying to reach down and grab onto the worm and cut the length of its body – uncertain where it would be the most fatal.

While she attempted that, she stepped again and aimed that foot to land on the second worm that had glanced off her – her eyes darting to Jigano as he bit down hard on one of the worms, and for a moment she admired the strength in the jaw for being able to do so much destruction in such a small size. After all, these weren’t normal garden worms.

The worm Rexanna tried to grab was both wriggly and wet with mud and its own slime, making it difficult to grasp. Still, her knife proved sharp enough to make her point and the small worm twisted and then flopped helplessly to the ground as she severed it in half.

Perhaps she should have been paying attention to where she was stepping rather than to the fox, however. Her foot stepped true, crushing - or rather, squashing - the head of the other small worm into the earth, but the spurt of blood and slime cost her her footing, and she would find herself falling if she couldn't do something to stop her slip.

The fox had wasted no time once he felt his current prey begin bleeding out. It's companion had ended up close enough to Rexanna to threaten his friend and he snarled before he leapt upon it, stepping once more on its thorax and setting his jaws into what might have been its neck or its head so that he could tear upwards with a fierce jerk of strong neck muscles, tearing the rubbery flesh - and trying not to gag.

Unfortunately, of the two worms left one was quite large - and quite angry.

Fortunately, it seemed disoriented from striking the earth so hard and as it rose up and lashed out again it did so at the space between the dead worm and Rexanna, causing nothing worse than a spatter of mud towards the magically-clean woman as a subsonic rumble rippled through the top layer of earth around it - something akin to a groan of frustration.

Jigano was less lucky, as the remaining mid-sized worm zeroed in on the vibrations of its dying brethren and lunged for the tall fox. Had he not been soaking wet his fluffy fur might have been slimed, but with his glorious coat plastered tight to his body the worm - barely - missed him, coiling around the empty space where his paws had been moments before and becoming entangled with its freshly-dead companion.

Her hands slipped as she tried to grab onto the worm – but at least the knife she had transmuted into a larger, sharper one worked just as well as she had imagined. Her hands came away free from the worm as soon as she had severed it, her hands remarkably clean in the aftermath. Yet as she stepped, she moved her food slightly (the tenderness of the bruising beneath her ankle) and she slipped. Suddenly Rexanna felt the world around her shift as she fell. Though she had decided she likely had dealt a crushing blow to the worm she stepped on despite losing her balance, and found a small victory within it.

But as she fell, she found nothing to grip onto, and instead found the lower back of her shirt and all of her pants soaked with the mud. As she tried to move, throwing her hands into the mud with a terrible squish, she pulled herself up slightly, enough to notice that she was now eye to eye with a rather large worm. For a moment, she wanted to try and dodge it, but before she had a chance to react, it fell into the space between her and the dead worm.

With that moment, she attempted to strike the worm in it’s frustration again with the mud soaked knife – her hands clean and the knife terribly dirty (a side effect she’d learn soon enough but hadn’t quite understood so far). She was far too busy with the worm as she knelt on her knees in the mud, trying to strike at the second worm to notice that the last living one had just barely missed Jigano in it’s fight. “We’ve got this!” She called to the fox with a hint of victory in her voice – even if the worms still weren’t completely dead. They were making progress, and progress was worth celebrating.

If he hadn't just eaten his fill of tastier cooked worm, the raw stuff might almost have been pleasant - except for the mud and slime that did nothing for its texture. Several of their victims still twitched and spasmed in the mud they had brought with them, courtesy of the Flowerbirth rains, but it was the two that remained largely unharmed that worried Jigano.

As he danced away his own opponent remained engaged in a fierce territorial struggle with the corpse of its former companion, whose head the fox had just torn and mangled, and Jigano yipped derisively at the stupid creature. His amusement was short lived, however, as Rexanna sank her knife into the biggest worm - and gained its undivided attention. It thrashed hard to dislodge her, raising the front of its body up and then slamming it down towards the young woman who had so conveniently brought herself into range of its squishy - but heavy - bulk. Her knife had struck deep, but a worm's vitals were not so easy to stab with any sort of precision, and it was large enough to leave nasty bruises and sprains if she couldn't avoid its body slams.

Abandoning his smaller foe, the fierce fox launched itself in a small but determined missile at the large worm, sinking his teeth into a few rolls of one of its segments and growling dangerously, but this larger worm was bulkier and more resilient than its smaller siblings, and its skin didn't tear so easily.

Jigano was beginning to think that discretion was the better part of valor, no matter Rexanna's optimism, but he wouldn't leave his friend to fight alone if she refused to run.

Optimism and not giving up often seemed like it was a good thing, and Rexanna had done it for nearly all of her life. But it was also one of her faults, to a point, and one she had slowly begun realizing as soon as her knife hit the worm and its attention moved to her. She watched as its body raised before her, and she tried to scoot back the best she could in the mud to avoid the hit. The fox, however, launched itself at it and bit down hard – hard enough that the worm was knocked off it’s trajectory by a small amount.

Enough for Rexanna to be able to roll out of the way.

When she had, she finally stood, and looked to the fox with an apologetic smile. “I think… Maybe we should just run.” She wanted to try and joke, to offer a grin in his direction, but her pride was hurt a bit – and her ankle was sore and she wasn’t ready to try and fight off the larger ones without refilling her magic at least a bit. In fact, the long knife she had transmuted still remained in the large worm and she wasn’t even willing to go and try and retrieve it.

She stepped back from the puddle and the worms, over their fallen brethren and looked to the fox. “Let’s get a safe distance away.” She panted to him, now that her adrenaline had begun to run off. Perhaps the fox might run away, having only stuck around because she did too. Or perhaps he might come with her – judging by the muddy puddles, he likely could use a bath too. And while Rexanna certainly didn’t look dirty, she could feel it beneath the glamour like a coat of oil.
