tryin' to take what's lost and broke and make it right

Sitting here, doing nothing, entrusting his fate into the two women, was tough. Especially for Koel, who hated feeling both hopeless and trapped. It wasn’t so much that he didn’t trust them to get him out of this—he did, though it was hard to hold onto that the more time passed—so much as he was the type of person who absolutely needed his own agency. This was his nightmare come to life, and while the sunlight and fresh air had been enough to sustain him for a bit, when the hole didn’t grow and the air grew stale again, his panic came back in full force.

He could hear Isla and Phoebe moving around out there, but apparently they’d decided to try a different tactic. It sucked, not knowing: as they offered their best reassurances, he found himself chucking. However, it held a clearly hysterical edge. ”You’ll forgive me for not being glad this happened at all,” he responded, his own voice sounding wild and worried.

Shifting, he tried to get a better look, or something, anything, that might make him feel like he could do something other than just sit here, wait, and look pretty. Unfortunately, it was still pretty dark—and he didn’t know his surroundings as well as he should—and he brushed against the pile. It rumbled ominously, and then, in the dark, a chunk of rock fell from the ceiling, going unnoticed by Koel.

Unnoticed, that is, until it slammed into his shoulder with an audible crack that would be heard even by the women outside. He screamed in pain and his vision went white and then spotty. Something was broken, that much was clear, but he couldn’t say what. Even worse, he felt himself swaying, almost unable to keep upright. There wasn’t room for him to lie down, or even sit, not without hitting the pile again and risking another collapse.

OOC Note: The efforts cleared a small hole at the top, but given Isla and Phoebe were being cautious and given it was well above their heads, it wasn’t nearly as effective as clearing from the middle of the pile. Same options are available as last time!

I choose number 8!

Well damn.

Isla winced at the audible crack, followed by Koel's scream of pain - the sudden change in events simultaneously set her every nerve on fire and draped a veil of calm over her. "Koel?" she called, casting a worried glance at Phoebe before she changed tactic and returned to the hole they'd made in the middle of the pile. In for a penny and all - the going had proven horribly slow trying their other method, not to mention it had actively hurt the trapped Overseer.

"Can you tell me what happened?" she asked, her tone level as she worked on making the breach in the rubble big enough for him to get out. "You should be able to see more light - are you able to move towards my voice?"

I choose 6

Phoebe was in shock. It was very clear that crack was the sound of bone breaking. But what confused her was {i]how{/} it had happened. This was the more stable part of the pile! Nothing should have fallen on him. She worried her lip, doubting herself now. Had she made the wrong call? Guilt bubbled up in her core as she wondered if she was to blame for Koel\'s very obvious pain. It was this doubt, coupled with her guilt and general passive nature that had her following Isla.\n\n[say}"Koel?" Phoebe called worriedly. He hadn't gone unconcious from whatever happened had he? She worked as quickly as she deemed safe, removing stone to try and open up a hole he could get out through.

Koel’s vision was still spotty and his mind was a haze of pain. While he hadn’t quite collapsed, he was swaying dangerously. The agony from the broken bone was a white hot sensation burning through his entire body; while he’d had broken bones before, the immediacy of this, as well as the circumstances he was in made it nearly impossible to tough it out. Indeed, unlike most wounds, which he took in battle and ignored due to the adrenaline coursing through him, this time the shock had driven him nearly catatonic.

So unfortunately for the ladies, he was in no position to respond to their calls. Even more unfortunately, in their new haste to get him out—it seemed he wasn’t the only one cracking under this pressure, though theirs was a bit less literal than his—they weren’t as cautious as they’d been before. This time, though their efforts definitely widened the hole, they also managed to disturb even more chunks from the pile.

It shifted and rumbled alarmingly, before two stones toppled; the first landed on Koel’s foot, causing him to let out another scream of pain. Then it abruptly cut off as the other slammed into his head and knocked him unconscious. He slumped forward, towards the hole, and started to slide down towards the ground.

There was some good news: the hole was now large enough to pull him through. However, Isla and Phoebe would need to find a way to get him out without hurting him further or bringing more rocks down on any of them. He was obviously in no state to get out on his own, what with the being knocked out and all.

OOC Note: Time to extract Koel! Please post a number between 1-5 at the top of your next post.

I choose number 1!

Isla wasn't one to swear very often, but the sound of Koel's screams and sudden silence had a curse spilling from her lips - one that would make a sailor blush. "Phoebe, quickly!" she said, her voice trying for urgent rather than panicked. She spotted Koel slumping against the hole they'd made and starting to slide, Isla reaching in to grasp his shirt. He was, of course, much larger and heavier than she'd be able to lift - they'd have to work together to pull him out.

"Hang on... Okay. I'll climb in there as well, try to grab his legs. Can you grab him from the other side?" she asked Phoebe, already ducking in through the hole to get a hold of the Overseer to try and help him through.
