Heave the silver hollow sliver
While Belial munched, Deimos snorted at the companion, before turning his attention back to Alys. Doing her best to learn was another notion of alteration and change, because he could remember her obstinance over the mere thought of it – angling his features away in case he had to smother another laugh again.

“I did want to ask you.” He morphed the subject lines anyway, curious about her thoughts, insight, and potential input on another matter. “Evie and I asked for the hot springs to be infused with healing magic from the Nature aspect of Frey.” Collecting more material for the semblances, he persisted, turning his eyes back to her and away from the walls. “They need significant amounts of the efas herb from the Labyrinth in the Grounds. Would you be willing to take a group there?” Since she was familiar; Deimos had been several iterations, but was more than likely to maul speaking squirrels or set things on fire or cheat and fly over.

The subject changed, and Alys raised her brows at the direction the conversation took. She'd never been asked to lead anything, and that she was being asked now came as somewhat of a surprise. That she was being asked to lead an expedition into the Grounds on a quest for Frey was even more of a shock. She was honored, on the one hand, that Deimos thought her capable of such a thing; on the other, she still had a grudge against the gods, and she was hesitant to join in something to benefit them.

"Can I ask you something?" Alys asked, tilting her head to the side as she surveyed the surrounding cave, looking for anything else that she might be able to collect. "I mean - yes, I can take a group to the Grounds, but - well, don't the gods hate us? Abandoned, I mean. Why do anything for them?" It was, perhaps, a naive question, but one that she still couldn't quite understand.

Deimos wouldn’t judge Alys’s reaction – he’d been much the same before. Bitter, rancorous, defiant against the deities for a multitude of reasons. But he’d still held his head high, and tried again and again and again until he was rewarded for his efforts, cultivated and orchestrated his magic across the lands, and never felt one moment of shame for liberating, rescuing, or mauling in necessity. “Not all the gods share the same sentiment, and times are changing.” He, amongst many others, were going to make sure of it.

With a deep rumble, he considered his words carefully, piercing gaze pinpointing straight at Alys. “Halo would not have the opportunities, nor the growth, without Frey’s influence.” It went for the greenhouse, where they could grow their own crops and produce without dire need for trade. It went for the alteration in temperatures, so they could continue to survive. It went to even the hot springs, laden for comfort. It went to the weaponry and defenses instilled, to ensure his people were safe.

But his head tilted, vague again, pondering if he’d errored somewhere. “If you are uncomfortable with it, you do not have to participate.”

Alys listened, thoughtful rather than defiant. She'd spoken with Tal recently about much the same topic, and he'd given her a lot to consider. But the fact remained that he was not Abandoned. It was interesting, therefore, to get Deimos's perspective. She was still learning about her new home, and was largely unaware of Frey's influence on their way of life, although the more she thought about it, the more obvious divine intervention became. "I suppose that makes sense," she said slowly. "It just seems so strange. I guess I always thought the gods hated us - Abandoned, I mean. But then... they do things for us, too. It's confusing." Alys was the type of person to like putting things in a specific box in her mind, and the gods were rapidly becoming something she couldn't tidily put away.

She shook her head at Deimos. "No, I'll do it," she said, meeting his gaze squarely. "If it's to help Halo, I want to be useful." She'd quickly come to love her new home, and if there was something she could do to help the land and people that had accepted her for who she was, she would do it. She smiled crookedly. "But you can't blame me for being confused about it."

He fell quiet again, listening to the slow introspection coming to light, following her notions with a nod. “From my understanding, they disliked us due to the Voice, as she was a former Abandoned.” Perhaps they feared another would rise from their blood – and despite all his power, all his might, all his strength, he’d never yearned to become someone like the false goddess. “But from my experiences, Safrin and Frey have been willing to listen. It just takes more time, and is more difficult for them to even address us.” He unfurled a long breath, mind coasting and ghosting back to each and every one of his experiences. “Only when I wanted something for myself did Safrin appear.” And then he notched a crooked grin, a shrug of his shoulders. “The deities are just as perplexing as the rest of us.”

Waiting for either acceptance or denial of the project, he arched a brow at her insinuations, and left it at that. “I do not.”

Alys was nothing if not stubborn, and she abhorred the idea of changing her stance more than the actual process of doing so. She pursed her lips as she considered Deimos's words, her eyes following a lizard that seemed to be staying just ahead of them, scurrying along the wall. "The Voice wasn't all of us," she muttered rebelliously. "But I understand." And she did, sort of. The thought that the gods could be just as perplexing as everyone else - and, therefore, just as unpredictable - did little to make her feel better. It had been easier to box them up into a "dislike" pile in the back of her mind.

Still, she would have to grow and evolve as she went through life, and perhaps it was time she reconsidered her relationship with the gods. They'd given Tal magical items, and Halo the means to survive, and she was sure they'd done things for other people she knew, too, so they couldn't be all bad. "It'll be strange to go back to the Grounds," she mused, accepting the project and moving on from conversation of the gods. "Efas herb, you said, yes?"

“I know,” and he smiled, his existence, and many others, a truth to that statement. But one individual had ruined it for the lot of them, and so here they were, continuing to unfurl the gnarled mess she’d made. But he wouldn’t bear any shame, wouldn’t bow his head, wouldn’t be caught repentant for the magic scorching through his veins. A majority of them were strong, stalwart, and infernally capable of defending their homes, of utilizing their strengths, of layering and managing foundations for the rest of the world to flourish. Halo felt nearly built upon these notions – and so its citizens followed through, no matter the strife, circumstances, or strain. “Nor will anyone force you to revere the deities either.” It would always be a personal choice.

Permitting another slow breath to pervade through his lungs, he watched Belial scamper along and bat at a few rocks, before his attention meandered back to Alys. “Last time I went to the Grounds was to assist with building the skyport,” and he shrugged – didn’t go much farther than the hill near the maze. “At least the labyrinth is always changing,” even if the land itself hadn’t. Then he nodded at the inclusion of the herb. “They are usually in the center.”

Alys had never understood the thought process behind lumping one group of people together as though they had a collective consciousness - except, of course, that that was exactly what she'd done with the gods, assuming that they were all alike and that they all hated the Abandoned. She pursed her lips, suddenly uncomfortable with her own bias. She was doing a lot of thinking lately, and changing her mind about the deities of Caido was a part of that - however discomfited it made her feel.

She inclined her head in response to Deimos's assurances. Perhaps she would not be forced to revere the deities, but would she ever be in a position to need something from one? To want something that only they could give her?

Only time would tell.

She shook her head, clearing her thoughts and turning her attention back to Deimos. "Is there a timeline for this quest?" she asked, already making mental notes of who she might ask to come with her. Tal, perhaps - it was always fun to be around the courier, and besides, what better way to get there than aboard a skyship?

He waited for some other line of questioning about the gods – but perhaps Alys had already internalized it, as all he received in return was silence. Arching his brow again, he went no further in the discussion, figuring it was either done or she’d take her time in aligning another inquiry into the sentiments and caverns.

Instead, there was only an interest in timelines, and he gave a snort. “No, thankfully, as there is much to be done.” Including a long trip from the desert, to King’s End, and then rounding over to the Oerwoud, to collect a variety of things. “Did you go to the Labyrinth often?” Presuming, perhaps, that most Grounders had been as mischievous and ridiculous as the Outlanders arriving – he and Ru had a vast number of experiences irritating the squirrels.

Alys spent very little time thinking about her youth in the Grounds. It was far easier and more interesting to remain grounded in the present or to consider the future. Still, the Labyrinth had been a pleasant enough distraction when she was younger, what with its Speaking Squirrels and shifting hedges. "It was one of the few places I really enjoyed visiting," she admitted. Then she smiled. "Though I'll admit I was never looking for herbs." Indeed, she'd been much more interested in roving its halls, reaching out to run her hand along the leaves as she followed the twists and turns. She'd never gotten truly lost, no matter how the walls shifted and changed.

Though she rarely wondered what it would be like to return to the place of her birth, she did so now, and was quiet for a moment as they walked on. What were her parents doing now? Were they still running a successful shop, wishing for a successor to take over from them? How close were they to retirement, now?

Did they ever miss her?

The caverns were silent but for their footfalls and Belial's antics; Alys studied the rock surrounding them thoughtfully, but saw nothing further to pique her interest. It was into this companionable silence that Alys spoke next. "What else do you envision for Halo?" she asked, genuinely curious. Perhaps there would be more that she could do for her new home as time went on and she settled into her new role there.

Considering the amount of time Deimos and Hotaru had spent mocking the local wildlife, the Sword could see how it might’ve easily appeased anyone in their youth. The mysterious, enigmatic sway of maneuvering brambles, the way nothing was ever quite the same, the lure and enticement of whatever else could remain in those depths, completely unbothered if they were lost for a few hours. Had there been anything like the Labyrinth in the Moonlit Tides, their parents would’ve had an even more exhausting time with their offspring. “Plenty of distractions there,” and he nodded along, permitting a huff of a laugh that ranged in degrees against the cavern walls.

Long strides and pensive silence, other than Belial’s flapping wings as they unfurled or the idle tapping of his hooves, didn’t leave the Warden expecting the next inquiry. Brow arching, he turned to glance her way, the answer already readily available in his mind – because it’d always been amidst the forefront. “Safety, strength. Always with a means to defend itself.” Hence why he trained so diligently with the Shields, and why they’d been a prevalent force during the war. “Improving quality of life.” Hence the springs mission at the moment. “And there is the connection with Stormbreak, if they ever find themselves a leader.” Pausing, he inclined his head once more. “Do you see places for improvements?”

The labyrinth had held distractions indeed, not just for Alys, but for her parents as well. She remembered sneaking off into the hedges, her parents left far behind, so that she could play with the squirrels. They'd been one of the first creatures she'd ever tested her magic on; to this day, she could create a reasonably realistic Speaking Squirrel with her illusions. The memory brought a smile to her face, and for a moment, she was tempted to tease Belial further with a merrily calling squirrel, but the notion faded quickly. It seemed cruel, now that the creature had finally calmed, to stir him up again.

With regard to Halo, her thoughts spiraled and unfurled as Deimos described his vision, and she nodded along as he spoke of safety and strength. That much, she had expected. So, too, did the thought of improved quality of life make sense. But Stormbreak - and a connection with them - gave her pause. She hadn't realized that they had any meaningful connection with a place that barred Abandoned entry, and she wasn't sure that she wanted one. After all, if they hated magic users enough to ban them from their city, why should she wish anything to do with them?

But she'd thought the same of the gods, hadn't she, and her mind was slowly changing with regard to them. Perhaps she was being too hasty with Stormbreak as well.

"Are we self-sufficient?" she wanted to know. "Are there opportunities for trade with other regions?" She was sure that there must be things that Halo had that others didn't, and vice versa. There were plenty of other places in the world, after all.

DEIMOS
Heave the silver hollow sliver
There’d once been a time where Deimos had never believed or thought he’d ever be involved in politics – and now for a second lifetime, he found himself squarely bearing the brunt of titles and guardianship. Sharing the burdens with others, namely Evie and Noah, gave him some ability to not falter and stumble and fumble along, and there was still some liberation and freedom to be had amidst all the other necessities. To hear Alys’s inquiries meant something to him too – citizens capable, willing, and able to see where their world was going, rather than sitting and letting it all pass them by. “The greenhouse and our hunters provide many food resources, but there will always be a need for more.” Especially if they continued to gain newcomers, more Abandoned made their way here, or for any other reasons those around found Halo suitable for themselves. “We have been open to trade, but the difficulty of such actions remains without anyone in command of several lands.”

The Hollowed Grounds could do much with their new stretch of land – fertile and farmed. The Greatwood, with endless timber. He didn’t know enough about Stormbreak, save for the racist overtures, to warrant them much else, save perhaps knowledge and history. Another thought rumbled through his mind, extending outward to the seer. “Supposedly Torchline was holding another election too, but I have not heard any results.”

Politics were not, shall we say, up Alys's alley. But, if she had learned nothing else in life, it was that one should never say never. Although she was quite content to linger behind the lines, as it were, helping from the background and remaining mostly anonymous, she could also see that there were many opportunities for growth among the frigid snowfields of Halo. She thought of the greenhouse, and how nice it might be to expand upon that. If the gods could make the Citadel warm(er) than it might otherwise be, could they also create a plot of land that would allow crops to grow as they did in the greenhouse? Were there animals that Halo could exploit that could survive in the harsher climes?

Trade was, as Deimos said, a difficulty if the other regions didn't even have leaders (and that left Alys to wonder how they were even functioning, if they didn't have someone to direct their region). Alys pursed her lips as she thought. "Could Halo help with that?" she wondered aloud. "Maybe offer assistance with finding a leader, or something?" It was probably a stupid idea - after all, what other nation would want someone coming in and telling them how to rule their own lands - but it was a thought nonetheless.
