There was a gentle breeze that he felt blow over his body, and he squeezed his eyes closed a little tighter. It felt unusual, but he had never been through the procedure that he could remember, so it might have been normal. It had to be normal, right?

After a minute, he didn’t feel any different, other than a wave of chills cascading over his body. Dark eyes snapped open to reveal a bright blue ceiling with fluffy, white designs. What… This didn’t… He had never… Caleb felt his heart start to race, his hands shaking. His hands… He tried to grip the bed upon which he laid, but… What was this? He jerked upward with wide eyes. What the hells was this? It was green and soft, but kind of…itchy?

He moved to sit on his heels, looking at the entirely white outfit he was wearing, and realized that there were green stains on his pants. That didn’t make any sense, though. Nothing in the laboratory could stain his clothes. He had never gotten a stain on them in his life! This had to be a new experiment. That was the only explanation. This was some kind of medically induced dream, and they were monitoring him from behind a glass.

His heart was racing, the realization of the must-be-experiment doing nothing to ease his nerves in the slightest. “Hel-” He choked on his voice for a second, only making his panic surge higher. “Hello?” He called, louder that time.

Ashe
The dappled sun beat down warmly upon Ashe's shoulders as she and Percy moved at an easy pace through the trees. The assassin idly stroked her hand over the black painted stallion's shoulder, the other with a gentle grip at the base of his mane. She stared outwards with tired eyes, dark circles ringed beneath them. Golden ram horns glinted in the midday sun as he tossed his head, eager to move faster, but she kept him at a walk. Magical being or not, she was going to be sure he hadn't had serious, less visible injuries before they flew. Today was their first - and short - test ride since the battle at the spire… her jaw suddenly feathered as her throat constricted.

Both girl and unicorn pulled up short at the sound of someone calling out, both sets of sensitive ears picking up on it. Percy nickered warily, stamping cloven hoof on the earth. Tossed a frown at him as she slid smoothly down from his bare back. ”Stay put,” she pressed, holding his nose between her hands. ”I'm not getting you hurt for no good reason.” He snorted and tossed his head from her hands as if to say, ’You mean like you'd get yourself hurt for no good reason?’ Humans had an astounding lack of self preservation instinct to the unicorn.

He did stay where he was as Ashe made her way through the underbrush that lead to the glade, and smoothly she slipped into the black fur of a large wolf. The scent of whoever was calling immediately pulled in, and she stored it away as she followed its trail. The she wolf didn't mask her pawsteps as she stepped out into the glade, head low and ears forward as she locked golden eyes upon a blonde and rather panicked looking man… likely a new Outlander then. Remembering well the last time she found a strange newcomer to Caido, she stopped wearily a good ten yards from the man.

It was a good half a minute before she decided to shift, if only for communication.. but this person knew a little of what she could do now. She wouldn't be caught off guard and magically attacked again. She remained at a crouch that nearly mirrored his, brilliant blue eyes ringed with gold at their center peering sharply at him. ”Do you know where you are?” she asked cooly.

Oh, gods. Oh, gods. He touched his rapidly moving chest, eyes on the grass as he tried to work out what the hells was happening. This wasn’t right. He had never been outside. He wasn’t allowed! This had to be some kind of trick...

When he looked up to see the shape of a large, black wolf, Caleb realized that he had lost his heightened senses. What else did he lose? Did he have his shifts still? What was happening?

The young man stumbled backwards from his crouched position, landing on his backside with a quiet yelp, as he slid backwards desperately. His breathing was audible, and he wouldn’t take his wide eyes off of the wolf. Then, before his eyes, the wolf shifted into a raven-haired girl. Somehow, he didn’t feel at all more relaxed by the sight of a new person...

Her gaze was sharp, and Caleb suddenly felt extremely obligated to answer whatever she would ask of him. ”I’m-” He tried to force himself to breathe enough to speak, putting his hand in his pocket and feeling the tuft of soft, faux fur that he carried with him. After a moment, he felt his heart rate start to relax. ”I was in the lab... I... Is this a simulation?” His hands started shaking, and he moved to sit on his feet again, eyes pleading with the girl in front of him. ”Please... Wh-what’s happening? Where am I?”

Ashe
The wolf girl could smell the fear on him, and she relexed just barely. Fear could make anyone dangerous, but her eyes softened and she made herself smile just slightly. He seemed harmless enough, nevermind the nagging voice in the back of her head that whispered it was idiocy to trust any first impression.

The girl shook her head and furrowed her brow slightly with her half smile, shaking her head. "Whatever a simulation is, this isn't it," she replied. Ashe tilted her head at him curiously in a distinctly canine expression met his pleading eyes with an unwavering look. "You've landed in a realm called Caido, like a lot of us have."

Ashe sighed and sat back similarly to the new Outlander, looping her arms around her knees and clasping her hands together. She appeared wholly relaxed, but her blades always close at hand and her magic even closer. Paranoia, it seemed, would never truly leave the wolf girl's instincts. Even with her reasonable belief that this newcomer wasn't a threat, she knew better than anyone that looks were deceiving. "I'm not going to hurt you," she told him, striking eyes watching his every move. "I'm Ashe."

Her head tilted again as she pulled in his scent further, blue eyes ringed with gold taking in his pristine and strangely stitched clothing. He smelled strange - like things she had never scented before. "Where are you from?"

She didn’t know what a simulation was? What? What kind of place was this? His entire world was practically made up of simulations, giving ordinary people the ability to feel as though they were doing wild, adventurous things that they could never actually do. What kind of world didn’t have simulations?

As Ashetta went on to tell him where he was, Caleb felt his heart racing. He didn’t understand… This wasn’t supposed to happen. He wasn’t supposed to be here. Gods, he had never even been outside of the lab… What if he met someone dangerous? What if he ran into an animal? What if he didn’t have access to antibiotics? What if… what if…?

He tried to slow his breathing, touching the bracelet with the soft fur on it. “I-I’m Caleb,” he said, looking at her as soon as he made sure that was who he was going to stay. “I’m from...um…” His hand dragged downward over his face, trying to clear his mind enough to remember what came before this world. “I’m from ArtFer Labs. Um, it’s in… It’s in Arpence.”

How could he get back? He had never even heard of Caido, so how could he be there in the blink of an eye? It wasn’t possible! Nothing made sense… He had to go home. His caretakers would be mad… He couldn’t make them mad, he couldn’t. He had to get back. But how?
