There is no Frigate like a Book To take us Lands away.

Helping Deimos refill the sled, she stole another glance at the training soldiers. Evidence of the Halovians' resilience and determination to thrive was everywhere, making her smile in appreciation for the culture. The culture that she now got to be a part of. It helped that the Wardens lived and breathed those same ideals. Leaving the barracks behind, she decided to follow her new leader. She tried not to flinch as Belial crept closer, steeling her resolve not to shift away this time.

As they continued down the next street, Elizabeth laughed at the mental image of a gaggle of children running a general store. "I'm sure they make great employees!" She wasn't sure if it was worth the work, and she would want that many kids, but more power to others who did! Looking to Deimos, she raised her brows. "Are you and Evie thinking about having more?" That was the usual question every couple or new parent got. It didn't change the fact that she was curious whether the Wardens planned to have a little army of their own.

DEIMOS
And in your darkest hour,
I hold secrets flame
Belial’s eyes narrowed, and the persnickety peryton seemed more ruffled by the lack of reaction from Elizabeth. Perturbed, he took to the skies instead, unfurling his wings and hastening to hover overhead, seeing if he could gain some semblance of fear or anxiety from those movements instead.

Recalling the large amount of children and their respective ages, perhaps the oldest had been ten at the most, Deimos snorted. “Maybe when they are older. For now, they seem to rule the roost.” But that was fine too; if that was how the Banks wanted things to be run. The Wardens would likely take a different perspective and parenting style, considering how much work they had to do around the kingdom and region itself.

Though the question caused him to blink for a moment, before righting himself and dragging the sled along the Banks’ doorstep. “We will see.” It was largely dependent on outside factors; including the void, if he’d need to go to Starfall in the near future, and their impending survival. The thought of leaving any of his family fatherless was a troublesome notion, and one he didn’t wish to repeat from the cycle of his own childhood.

Elizabeth failed to hide her flinch as Belial flapped overhead, pulling her shawl tighter to ward off the creature. As an extra precaution, she took another step closer to Deimos, hoping the risk of his wilting stare might discourage the peryton away. She instead focused on imagining the Bank's unruly children taking over the house that now loomed before them. The exterior of the lodging appeared unremarkable, except for the echoed fingerprints smeared across the windowpanes and various toys occupying the window ledges. Her eyes peered through the foggy glass, hoping to steal a glance of the family within. But when nothing stirred, she placed her bundle on the doorstep and stepped back to join Deimos.

Although the Warden didn't elaborate on his answer, Elizabeth sensed that there were multiple worries and factors influencing his opinion on more kids. She could understand his hesitation, however, he didn't appear opposed to the idea. Still curious, she tilted her head. "Ignoring all current circumstances, in a perfect world where everyone is safe and happy, would you want more children?" She didn't think there could be any harm in the question. It wasn't a plan or intention. Just a noncommittal, no-strings-attached hypothetical. Almost like her hypothetical desires to return to her warm fireplace and thaw the strange pebbles occupying her boots.

And in your darkest hour,

Between Belial continuing to be an annoying git, and Elizabeth peeking through windows, Deimos didn’t withhold his snort. “They are likely at the shop,” in case she wanted to view and witness the family there – though he’d likely still discourage glancing into their home. He certainly wouldn’t want anyone doing the same to his and Evie’s shelter and sanctuary. Arching a brow and shaking his head at multitude of antics, he placed the bundle along the steps, counted the amount, and when satisfied with the number, aimed to return to the sled.

If Elizabeth expected the Sword to be less than pragmatic, she would have to look elsewhere. He had a difficult time ignoring the ongoing circumstances, especially when it had arrived at Halo’s doorstep not too many seasons ago, premonitions and warnings weren’t being sent in mass, and the eventuality of their movements would have to lead to action. He’d already seen war in multiple lifetimes. The drums, the blood, the violence was far too ingrained in his bones, enamel, and soul. The heart of the matter rested upon Starfall – and leaving his family behind to potentially sacrifice himself for the greater good (which he’d always done), still bit and tore. “Of course,” he murmured. “But we cannot ignore what is going on around us.” They could steal moments, now and then, but children were more than instances.

Deimos's snort had Elizabeth blushing. She hadn't been trying to pry, just glancing for any signs of fleeting occupancy. But it was still embarrassing to be caught looking, so she cleared her throat and gave a grimaced smile disguised by a playful wiggle of her hands. "Of course. I just didn't know if a little face was going to pop up in the window." Which might have been a scarier sight than Belial. Maybe it was a good thing they were out.

Elizabeth wasn't sure what she'd expected him to say, but she found his response satisfactory enough. It was obvious that he was too practical to fully appreciate the question, even if he did admit to wanting more children. Hopefully, the world would slow down enough for him to feel comfortable focusing on his family with Evie. Although, at this rate, all their lives would be consumed by the Void, whether it was the infection or fear of it. She gave him a sad, understanding smile. "I suppose we can't ignore it, but we shouldn't stop living our lives. There's never going to be a perfect moment, so we have to embrace the little time we have." It was one of the reasons she'd set out on her own. If she didn't take a leap, she might never have the opportunity. Sometimes, the opportunity had to be created

At this point, she noticed that they only had one set of supplies left. It seemed like their preparations were about done. Deimos wouldn't be able to hide from his other responsibilities forever.

Giving her a suspicious glance and nothing more after her comment, he shook his head, dragging the sled down to the furthest point of the street. “Now just for the Tooks,” at which he wrinkled his nose. “Butchers. Mr. Took is…” he paused, trying to find the right word to describe the man. The Sword had never had a problem with him, but multitudes of others had. “An irritable sort.” Leaving it at that, and then recalling the wife in the emergency shelter…he was a bit glad the curmudgeonly duo would be at their store instead. “Fortunately, they are likely at their shop as well.”

Her other response was something he’d heard echoed time and time again; usually when he, and many others, became immersed in the threats surrounding them. Based on how he’d lived through an acerbic amount of warfare, malice, and ominous bombardments, it was difficult to place all of that aside – and while he could compartmentalize to some degree, it was still a struggle to ignore the looming and exhausting trials. “I have heard these sentiments before,” he snorted, eyes narrowing along the cobblestoned and snow-laden road. “I have not stopped living. I just do not want to be irresponsible,” and pretend nothing was going on – too consumed by defending, protecting, and ensuring Halo wasn’t picked off next.

She supposed it was best that everyone they were delivering to had been out and about. If they'd been home, she wouldn't have been able to chat with Deimos as much. They probably also wouldn't have needed the supplies delivered if they'd had the extra time. Based on the Warden's reaction regarding Mr. Took, she was lucky they happened to be one of those people. Although she had dealt with her fair share of 'irritable sort's. In fact, she might even include current company as part of that demographic.

Elizabeth didn't balk at Deimos's snort, shrugging her shoulders. "I can respect that. And you've obviously taken some of it to heart or else you wouldn't have a family. But it never hurts to be reminded." She gave him a warm smile that contained all her own sentiments on the matter.

Setting her final bundle down, she returned to the sleigh with a mixture of relief and disappointment. She was eager to be reunited with her cozy fireplace, but her quality time with the Warden had been much more productive than she'd originally expected. Not only did she get an inside peek behind the curtain, she got a personal tour of some of its residents. It was a bittersweet feeling, even as she pulled her shawl tighter and faced the barracks.

There was a semblance of relief through his shoulders as she accepted the finality of his statement; for he had taken much heart and responsibility into his family, but also the entire realm of Halo. It’d been a tricky balance, but he and Evie had been working, him especially, on ensuring there were bits and pieces for them, rather than always another looming plan, figure, or plotline. But to place other platitudes along, especially when the unknown still pressed its weight into their spines, would be reckless and heedless, both of which he was not. His silence spoke a number of volumes, so he simply nodded in response.

Drawing the sled back to the barracks, he settled the ties and string nearby. Belial touched back down, giving one last holler towards Elizabeth, before sauntering his way towards the barracks, knowing the Sword would be heading there soon after. Zuriel stayed at the Warden’s side as he completed the rounds, and turned to face the younger Abandoned. “Thank you for your help today. Let me know if you need anything else.”

When Deimos accepted her words, Elizabeth smiled again. They may not have had a ground-breaking or revolutionary conversation, but she felt like she understood him better and she hoped that he might feel comfortable enough to open up even more one day. Until then, she would have to settle for meeting his wife.

As they tied up the sleigh, her shoulders visibly sagged at the peryton's departure. She wouldn't be missing him any time soon. Zuriel was a different story and she looked with regret at not having gotten to interact with the unicorn much. Next time.

Preparing to part ways, she gave the Warden a pleasantly large smile. "No. Thank you for letting me assist - and putting up my sign. I look forward to being able to help more in the future." Elizabeth clutched her shawl and gave a short wave in departure. "Good luck on your other tasks for the day!" And with that, she scurried back to the warm recesses of her home.
