here comes the sun
smiling down

"How about that next?"

The taste of grilled Magna and sugared sweets had not yet faded from her tongue before Maea looked for something else to do. The initial stiffness had long since worn off and she now pointed to the firewheel with fingers coated in the sticky sweetness. It burned bright in the gathering dark of the evening, illuminsting the revelers with a golden glow; a sun in the night, a light to replace the darkness... it was even more beautiful than Maea remembered.

Escorting Ludo around the festival was fun, like rediscovering the delights of childhood all over again; she laughed as she made their way through the crowd and paused only once she stood at the front of the line, with the blazing sun dazzling right before her.

Licking her fingers at least somewhat clean and looking every bit the child she so easily could be mistaken for, she reached for a candle and held it up to one of the others that were already lit. Once the flame caught on, she took out a burned down candle and replaced it with her own, then stood aside so others could reach to repeat the process.

"I always forget how crowded it gets... But it just wouldn't be the same without lighting at least one candle." She smiled dreamily at the fiery display, the lights shimmery and blurred to her eyes but all the more fantastical for it. Even from a distance the heat of so many burning lights washed over her, staving of a raw chill of the night that never reached her. Even without the soul guides presence over her shoulders she still wore the scarf they gave her... It had never left her side, and Maea had not been cold once since that day.

PHOEBE
Phoebe had passed out a good majority of her flower crowns at this point, though she had gone around and strategically placed a few so they could be gathered by those who perhaps didn't feel so comfortable taking them from her directly. But now she meandered around, taking in the sights. It was really quite a beautiful festival, and though a blanket of melancholy wrapped around her heart she smiled to see everyone else so joyous.

Her wandering eventually brought her to the big wheel of candles. Frankly she didn't really know what it represented, the person who was supposed to have introduced her to everything no longer interested in doing so. Her mind began to wind down that road and she put a quick stop to it. Nope. No. Nuh-uh. Happy thoughts, Phoebe, happy thoughts.

As she watched people line up to light the candles she saw a familiar face step back...with a familiar deity wrapped around her shoulders. She hesitated a moment, but decided to approach. Maea was kind and...well Ludo seemed in a good mood since they were playing along with wearing a flower crown and all. "Hello, Maea. Hello, Ludo." she said with a small smile, greeting them both of course. "I'm sorry to bother you but...I was wondering if you could explain this to me? Emmett was supposed to show me but uhm...he is somewhere else." she said quietly, hoping to just gloss over that and not explain.

here comes the sun
smiling down

Someone paused beside her, and Maea turned to smile at Phoebe when the younger woman addressed her. So far most of her attention had been spent on Ludo, but a chance to talk to others was welcome - especially when this someone was a person she had been meaning to find again.

"Phoebe! What are you talking about, of course you're no bother. How are you, enjoying the festival? Thank you for the flowercrowns, I love it."

Maea had changed much from the first time they met. The timid, shy girl who couldn't meet anyones eyes and who rarely smiled was gone, replaced by an animated young woman who readily welcomed company. Perhaps the smile was a bit too wide, and the glimmer in her eyes gone too fast when she thought no one was looking, but if Maea was aware of the cracks in her facade of 'Im-fine-don't-worry-about-me" she didn't let on.

"Well... it's supposed to represent the sun" she explained, gesturing to the candle-lit wheel. "You light a candle and place it on the wheel, and everyone helps to make sure it stays lit through the night... to show how there is light even in the darkness, and to honor Rae's season."

It was the garbled version; to be more specific on the tradition and it's meaning she would have to dive through some of the Atheneum records.

PHOEBE
Phoebe couldn't help but smile when her name was said so brightly. It was comforting to know that even with all of the Natural and Outlander tensions lately, some were not so easily swayed from friendship. "I'm having a good time and I am glad you like them. There ah...there was a girl with wings that seemed a little offended I had picked any to do so." she said, still a little thrown from that. "But I think they look really pretty on you."

Something about her demeanor seemed...off. She remembered Mara being terribly shy but now she seemed...too not shy. "Is everything okay, Maea? You don't have to be peppy just for my sake, you can relax." she said with a soft smile. Events like this could be exhausting for the introverted, she knew all too well, so she didn't want to be one added layer of anxiousness for her to cover up.

As Maea explained the lighted wheel she smiled, nodding in understanding. "I see, that makes sense." she said softly. Phoebe waited for an opening before stepping up to light one of the candles as well, returning to Maea's side after. "Are you having a good time?" she asked.

"With wings!? How... who and what was she, did she say?" Maea gaped at her friend, stunned at the impossibility of it. She thought so while a god hung like a scarf around her shoulders, no doubt laughing at how little the mortals knew of the world. It was something she would have to investigate, a topic to discuss with Jigano, Sam or Caiside - especially since the red haired man har said he wanted to make a beastiary. Though was a girl, winged or not, a beast?

Questions questions.

Her smile faltered a little when Phoebe asked what was wrong. Any other time she might have spoken more readily about it, but today was the Fiat Lux. A day to smile, not chew over old sorrows, however necessary it might be.

"I... would rather not talk about it, if you don't mind. At least not right now? It's too much for a quick chat, and I don't feel like ruining the mood for anyone."

The smile stayed on, but Maea touched her hand quickly to Phoebe's arm in quiet gratitude for the concern. People didn't usually see through her like that... this girl was something else.

"I'm having a wonderful time! I've been taking this one around the stalls" she said and pointed mischievously at Ludo, "and I think we'll be joining the dancing next... as soon as I've settled the food. You have got to try Amalia's pastries, they are to die for!"

PHOEBE
"Oh I don't know I didn't ask. She seemed pretty miffed..." Phoebe said, looking down at her hands. Confrontation was not her strong suit, even when she did get mad. Plus someone with wings could probably easily beat her into the dirt and she just really didn't want that to happen.

Phoebe regularly had to see through her client's facades in order to understand how they were doing. Plenty of women didn't like to admit when things were hard or if they were struggling. Phoebe just happened to know what to look for. She smiled softly at Maea and nodded. "Well, if you ever want to talk about it, my door is always open." she said, then letting the topic drop as she wished it.

The young midwife smiled as Maea excitedly told her about all she and Ludo had done. They were an odd couple, Phoebe thought, yet seemed logical friends. Not that she could have explained that logic if asked but to her it made sense. "I am so glad to hear it, and I will definitely give Amalia's pastries a try." she said with a smile. "Make sure to dance for me too. I...doubt I will."
