Deimos
With Evie busy at the Academy, Deimos opted to respond to a missive about tracking more void creatures that had sprung up around the grotto, taking Erebos with him for another outing to separate regions. It didn’t make him any less apprehensive to have his infant strapped to his chest, with all manner of danger still looming and present, but it inspired him to keep the trepidations tied down, tethered.

After meeting with the hunter, snagging snacks to occupy himself and listening to the sound of Erebos’ squeals and giggles, or feet aching to kick out from behind the fabric, his eyes caught the looming Tower. It was difficult to miss, considering its great height, and he watched as multitudes wandered past, either so used to the structure, or not as enamored.

For he’d heard of all the tales surrounding the behemeoth – the Ascended’s attack, how it had fallen, those impacted, another kickstart to the war…

And he was uncertain if they were on the precipice of another one.

Rather than simply stand there staring at it all morning, Deimos swung them to a bench, staying within it's shadow. “Let me write something down,” he murmured to the youth, who babbled in return, as the Sword sat along the wooden portions and took out his notebook.

and everybody's gotta breathe somehow
Alys hadn't been to Stormbreak in quite some time - not since it was first opened to the Abandoned - but since Tal had some deliveries in the area, she'd decided to take the opportunity to explore a little. She'd spent so long in King's End that she'd been sheltered from many of the goings-on of the world, focusing her attention instead on their home and her shop. It was ironic, really - she'd left the Hollowed Grounds to get away from her parents, who had so wanted her to become a merchant. And here she was, doing exactly what she'd always sworn she wouldn't do. At least now, with an assistant to run the day-to-day, she was better able to travel again. And besides, it was long past time to pull her head from the sand and pay attention to what was happening in Caido - especially if those strange broadcasts were anything to go by.

What she hadn't been expecting as she roamed the city was to find anyone she knew - and yet, as she rounded a corner, her gaze settled on a familiar face, and she paused momentarily before approaching. She hadn't seen Deimos since leaving Halo, but she'd missed her friend. Hopefully he wouldn't be too cross with her for moving away.

As she approached, she was somewhat surprised to see a babbling baby strapped to the Sword's chest. She called out to him as she grew closer, not wanting to startle him when he seemed so entrenched in whatever it was he was writing in a notebook. "Deimos!" Her voice was warm, a somewhat excited smile on her face. "What are you doing in Stormbreak?" She was unused to seeing the man so far from Halo, though she supposed it was just as strange for her to be here as for him.

Usually the calling of his name was a telltale sign of impending support he’d have to provide someone, but the tone was familiar. In Stormbreak, that could mean an abundance of things, and he glanced up from his notebook and Erebos’s tiny fists flailing about, to see Alys. His brows were furrowed slightly, only to enlarge in surprise; because the woman had made herself a prominent figure in their wintry world, and then promptly disappeared; evaporating off into the other multitudes of regions and wanderers. He thought she’d be like most of those who’d gone before – faded into the evening scripts, lingering in memories and nothing more.

She seemed just as shocked as him, so he couldn’t help but snort from his place on the bench. It sounded as though Erebos yearned to copy the same noise, but ended up sneezing instead. “Guild matters,” and he raised his notebook with the usual charcoal scrawl. A myriad of other questions lingered within his mind – mostly pertaining to her health and wellbeing, and then consisting of the notions of withdrawal from the mountains – but maybe none of it was his business. Instead, his head tilted, eyes scrutinizing and studying, before finally relinquishing an echo of her inquiry. “What are you doing in Stormbreak?”

When Alys had left Halo, she'd meant to talk to Deimos first - or at least to write, once she'd settled herself in King's End. In truth, she never would have left if not for Tal, and since she knew that her partner and Deimos didn't exactly see eye to eye, she had felt that it put her in a bit of an awkward position. Still, she and Deimos had known each other for a while now, and she'd owed it to him to provide some sort of explanation rather than disappearing into thin air.

Still, maybe she could make it up to him. At least, she hoped she could.

His response to her greeting was short and perhaps a little brusque (although she certainly could have been imagining things - Deimos was not the most loquacious at the best of times), but she was determined not to let it intimidate or deter her. "Tal had some deliveries to make in the area, so I thought I'd take a look around to see how things have changed since I was last here," she explained with a shrug. It wasn't the most interesting or exciting of reasons to be in Stormbreak, she supposed, but it would have to do. "How have you been?"

Deimos
Without any explanation given or granted, Deimos was forced to merely speculate, presume, and then be silent. It was a shame to have lost her to King’s End, and he’d felt much the same when Ru had opted to relocate as well. It’d been enough seasons, and reasoning, to contemplate the notions of why, even if he didn’t agree with the sentiments. And it often made him wonder if Halo, or those they considered friends, allies, and family, mattered so little – and bit his tongue every time.

Like now, as he tried to make peace with all the unknowns. A long breath filtered through his lungs, the explanation of her whereabouts here enough to solidify his notions with a nod. Something felt stifled and forced, and perhaps it was his own rancor and life experiences getting in the way, trying to parse through the furtive reaches without stepping into his usual straightforward and candid approach. “Busy,” he opted for instead, giving a slight smile. The infant took the right time to squeal, so he lowered his hands and placed his notebook upon the bench, peeling away portions of the sling and fabric to reveal the youth. “This is Erebos. Evie had him at the beginning of Deepfrost.” To his credit, the blue-eyed and dark-haired babe shook his tiny, balled up fist in greeting; already far friendlier than his father. “Dealing with void creatures and the whole Starfall issues as well, and ensuring Halo stays safe. How are things in King’s End?”

Maybe one day, she would explain herself. It might even be today, if she could figure out how. After all, she really had loved Halo and her friends there - it was just that her dearest friend was Ru, and her partner was Tal, and when they both left... well, it only made sense for her to follow. But how was she to explain that without giving offense? Wasn't that explanation just a way of saying, you weren't enough to make me stay to those she'd left behind?

It was easier by far to try and move forward and hope for the best; fortunately, it seemed that Deimos was willing to do the same. Alys stepped closer, joining the Sword on the bench and peering at the infant with a small smile. She'd never been particularly fond of children - not that she disliked them, exactly, but she had very little experience with them. Still, Erebos was rather cute, and Alys smiled at his tiny, waving fist before turning her attention back to Deimos. "Congratulations," she said warmly, meaning it. "He's very cute. With a little one on top of everything else, I'm sure you are busy."

As for the rest - the Void creatures and Starfall and everything that continued to threaten Caido - Alys nodded, her smile falling away. "It's been fine, as far as I can tell - though I think everyone is holding their breath, waiting to see if the Void creatures keep spreading. I'll admit, I'm not particularly up to speed - I've been working to establish my shop, and most of the news I get is secondhand."

Erebos openly stared at Alys as she sat down; much in the way of infants – not being rude, but gathering information and images, collecting and absorbing anything they could. Then he clenched his tiny fist around Deimos’ finger instead, and the Sword remained content to bob the child’s hand back and forth while he conversed with Alys. “Thank you. And yes,” he snorted, because while that had always been the way of it, other challenges prompted and circled without much explanation or guidance.

The seer not having information surprised him; given Talyson and Sunjata often being at any of these meetings, but maybe the notions just hadn’t been included in everything else going on. “You have heard the broadcasts though?” Vox, slipping into their ears and minds, a dangling portion of bait that always left him irritated and perplexed. “Some of us recently had a dream about Starfall, and we have also tested things on a void item.” He left that up to her on which she’d prefer to hear first, tilting his head and watching her expression.

It was a bit strange, seeing Deimos in a fatherly role. Alys had seen him as many things in their time - a leader, a mentor, a friend - but as a parent? It wasn't that she thought he'd be a bad one; on the contrary, the seer assumed only good things about the Sword's parenting skills, especially if he was as dedicated to that role as to all his others. It was just so... unexpected.

Of course, she only had herself to blame for that. She'd never had friends to keep in touch with before, and as it turned out, she wasn't very good at it. She felt a stab of guilt that she hadn't managed to write even one letter in all the time she'd been gone, but it was too late now. Now she could only hope to repair anything that she'd broken with her abrupt departure. Fortunately, Deimos didn't seem too angry with her.

"Yes," she said, a small frown crossing her face briefly before she scrunched her nose at the infant, aiming to make him smile. "I thought they were a strange dream at first, but when there were more than one..." The seer trailed off, shaking her head. Trying her best to keep the troubled expression from her face - although, truthfully, Erebos was probably too young to recognize it one way or another - Alys raised a brow at Deimos. "I haven't heard much about Starfall," she admitted. "But I ran into a few Void things a few seasons back. What kinds of tests did you do?"

Unaware his position as a fatherly figure was bizarre (the Sword had already once raised Kiada), he presumed it as a natural order of things - planned, granted, blessed. Erebos continued to stare, but was a regular absorber of information – be that words, sounds, or facial expressions. He opted to try and copy Alys’s scrunched face in return, and he’d certainly seen his parents wrinkle their noses enough times to strive on imitating the gesture. Deimos snorted in response, tucking the lad closer as they talked.

Alys, no matter where she’d been, clearly hadn’t been able to avoid the broadcasts either, and it made him wonder just how far the Family’s power could spread. Through all of Caido – without boundaries? Without limitations? A question likely no one could answer – or perhaps one he didn’t want to hear the response to. Instead, his eyes drifted upwards, lost in thought, picturing and cycling back to what they’d utilized and strived. “Seren had an orb we could use our abilities and magic on. Most things seemed to hit normally, but ice and earth had no effect. Air and gravity, however, seemed to do far more damage.” Pausing, his head tilted, and then Erebos did the same. "You are aware of the Greenwood, Oerwoud, and Feverlands being overrun by them?"
