He had approached the shrine on two feet so clever human hands could carry his offering in the gathering twilight. At his feet a young gryphon frolicked, her baby down almost gone, replaced by the feathers of her first juvenile molt. She knew what he was hoping to find, and she searched for it with wide eyes and eager chirrups until she found it: a pebble from a glow stone, small but no less bright than its larger brothers and sisters. Jigano took it with an ear-scratch of thanks, then slipped it into the small origami star lantern he had folded and fit together from several sheets of fancy paper. The pebble within glowed through the yellows and whites, and the bard laid it on the altar reverently before he stepped back-

-and shifted into the form of a soft white fox. Isuma bounded to his side, reep!ing in excitement at the chance to play with a friend again, even if her kittenish memories of them were a bit on the fuzzy side.

Then again, so was she.

Bowing his head, the fox reached out to offer his prayer in a serene state of mind.

Ludo, soul guide, I come as promised to keep our bargain, and seek your guidance. And Isuma would like to see you, too, he added, a touch of fondness for his small companion coloring his reverence for the god he prayed to.

The stars created by the lantern seem to blaze and flicker for a moment, creating shadows which dance and twirl in the shrine around fox and gryphlet. It is a serene moment, one in which distant music may be heard, one in which there is a sensation of being not alone, of being loved, of being wrapped in peace...

But the soul guide does not answer this evening. The winds of change have torn through the Hollowed Grounds, and Ludo has spent much to shepherd centuries of souls to their final resting place. Tonight, even the promise of warm fur and soft scritches cannot rouse it from its rest.

The light and shadows swirled, and Isuma chirruped joyfully and leapt after the scatter of lights that danced across the grass. Jigano's ears perked forward eagerly in spite of his wariness of the trickster god, remembering clever little fingers scratching just the right place. For a moment the world seemed to hold its breath with love and laughter, and the fox held his breath with it.

And then... silence. The stillness passed, the breeze whispered over the lawn of the shrine, and the light within the offered lantern ceased to flicker. Isuma was too young and too cheerful by nature to be disappointed at the lack of hoped-for company, but Jigano felt a faint pang of worry - for the god he had hoped to call had gone against the wishes of the Old Gods in giving information and helping the mortals escape their trap. Were they alright? Had Mort punished them? Safrin had described the god of Death to be a loving, gentle deity, but perhaps stern Vi had stepped in...?

It was a question that would have to go without an answer for a while longer.

Bowing his head in a mixture of respect and regret, the fox collected his dignity and took the opportunity to sit in meditation while Isuma played within the safety of the Shrine's boundary, trying to regain a piece of the serenity he had felt for one sweet moment.
