Thalassa
You could do anything,
if you only dared.
As the ship drifting in between the Outer Islands, Thal monitored the activities of the crew. Men pulled lines and adjusted sails, ensuring they stayed their course between the masses of land. She could see the nerves lingering beneath the surface, but they were a trained bunch, willing to follow her through thick or thin. Despite that, when she'd revealed that they'd be hunting Void monsters, fear had crossed their faces and a hesitant silence had consumed them. They had a right to be scared of the tainted abominations of sea creatures, even if she kept her own expression cold and steely.

A few people had taken her offer to join the crew for the day and she turned to address them. "We've arrived. If everyone's ready, I'll need someone to prepare the bait and another to keep a lookout in the crow's nest for any signs of the Void." A barrel sat nearby filled with large fish and juicy worms. Supplies for hooks and lines surrounded the barrel to be assembled. Meanwhile, the previous crow's eye was climbing down the mast, ready to switch with the next shift.

Welcome to the fishing PQ!

Round 1: Pick a role! Help prepare the bait and lines or be on the lookout for Void creatures.

"If I could fly I would never come back", you said
A skyship was not a seabound ship, and for all that the difference should be obvious, there were plenty of similarities in how they were operated. Leaping on the chance to expand her skills when it came to ships in general, Maea had signed up for the trip and watched both Thalassa and the crew with interest as they navigated the narrow windings of river and banks.

"I'll scout for trouble," she offered easily, opting to shift and fly her way up to the crow's nest. It was too fitting a pun to resist, and besides - why not fly if she got the chance? Perching on the railing to the narrow basket, pale blue bird's eyes scanned the horizon as well as the immediate shoreline for any sign of trouble.

Maea takes the role of lookout!

After Thal had helped him do some hunting in the desert, it had only seemed polite to return the favor. Besides, he'd always meant to spend more time on a sea-faring vessel. It was kind of in his family's name, even if he'd ended up taking flight with his own boat instead. Throw in Maea showing up and Tal figured things would probably be okay, even if he and Thal ended up sassing each other as often as they pulled together.

"Oh, thanks," he grumbled up after his friend as she shifted into a bird and left the squishy, wriggly bait to him. He wrinkled his nose and scowled at the wet and slimy mess awaiting him and then heaved a long-suffering sigh and rolled up his sleeves. Testing the lines to make sure they were firmly attached to the hooks wasn't so bad, but the swearing really started in earnest once he started trying to load the hooks. Worms wriggled, as it turned out, and he hissed a few times as he poked his thumb with a hook while trying to make sure the worm wasn't going to fall off it.

Where was Boreal in all this, you ask?

Why, she was perched up in the crow's nest with Maea, smugly avoiding the mess on the deck around her human far below.

Tal reluctantly fights the bait!

Thalassa
You could do anything,
if you only dared.
Despite the late afternoon sunlight, an unusual cloud cover boiled over from the east. The thick fog immediately cast The Marauder and its occupants into a status of nonexistent visibility. Thal cursed herself for not noticing it sooner. Despite her avian eyes, Maea would have a difficult time spotting anything through the blanket of nothingness, but she may notice a bulge in the water to the starboard side.

Thal called for the ship to slow to a stop for risk of running ashore. A scrambling of commands and fretful motions stalled the vessel's movements to leave the rock of the waves lapping against its hull. Her eyes narrowed suspiciously at the supernatural weather, considering their options. However, before she could give another order, the currents whipped up, throwing the crew into disarray at the sudden shift in temperament. They'd definitely found something, but what, she couldn't be sure.

Talyson may have sustained a few pokes from the hooks, but his bait was placed well enough to earn a few appreciative glances from the seasoned sailors. They helped him secure the lures to the lines as Thal called out over the increasing winds, "Get ready to set the bait! We've got company, so keep your eyes peeled and stay alert!" Her legs moved at a clipped pace across the deck, directing any idle members and giving pointers when necessary. A nod of approval was thrown towards Talyson for his efforts. To Maea, she waved for her to descend.

Staying close to the others, she guarded the railings and looked for signs of whatever creature might be lingering nearby. She wouldn't have one of her visitors pitching overboard in the rocky waters. That would be a terrible blemish on her reputation.

Round 2: A storm has blown in! Cast the bait to hook the creature responsible while keeping your feet on the deck!
And deep down, you know it too.

Your leg, ahh! It’s caught in a bear trap some quicksand moss! Quickly you sink in up to your knee as what you had thought to be just a patch of dry moss begins to slowly devour you. If you aren’t freed in about 30 minutes, you’ll lose the leg.

You’ve encountered Quicksand Moss! It should be fairly easy to escape from, though you might experience lingering pain or swelling in your leg.

Quicksand Moss - Quicksand moss has the appearance of dead moss, although in reality, this brown colour is due to it consuming animals instead of sunlight. It grows anywhere a regular moss or lichen would, but grabs any creature foolish enough to come near and quickly digests them.

Sing to me, I am not doing well
Getting tired of my own words
The roiling mist was a clear cause for alarm, and Maea's raucous caws filled the air about the same time that Thalassa's voice cut over the slosh of water and creaking timber. Coming down as she was vid, Maea resumed her ancient form and armed herself with her chakram, plus a spark of flame that hovered about her like an orange will-o-wisp.

Licking her lips anxiously while peering at the strange swell of the sea, she prayed to every god that might listen that it wouldn't be a ghost whale. It was bad enough that this resembled the last time she'd gone to battle creatures in the sea - if she ended up in the water, odds were she'd  book it to the shore as fast as she was able. Heroism died screaming, or however that song goes.

Maea shifts back to Ancient and arms herself with chakram and fire ~

Tal had been so focused on getting the bait sorted out that he didn't notice the fog until they were in the thick of it. Maea's croaked warning and Thalassa's flurry of orders pulled him back and he looked around, eyes widening at how thick the mist had become so quickly. "Aw, hail," he muttered, pulling his Goggles down over his eyes. The magical device let him see thirty feet clearly, regardless of the obscuring weather.

With a grimace for his slimy hands he helped some of the sailors get the lines untangled and then took up station beside one of his own. He tied the end of the line firmly to the rail of the ship and then drew his Dagger. "What kind o' weird mist is this?" he called to Thalassa uneasily. "Hope it's not the Fe Fiada..." Resting the fingers of his free hand on his line to feel if it twitched, he looked up and down the hull on the starboard side to try and see what was hiding in the fog.

Thalassa
You could do anything,
if you only dared.
Much to everyone's surprise, a strange mossy texture surfaced from the ship's deck, keeping anyone from being launched overboard. However, just as quickly as it'd come, the storm around them seemed to increase exponentially. Winds snapped at the closed sails, careening the ship to and fro like a seasaw seesaw. Rain also began to pelt down, strangely dissolving the thick substance attempting to grow at their feet.

Maea had been able to stay aboard for another round, her preparation allowing her to absorb the shifting of the tides enough to remain upright. Her steadiness and glowing light helped to support the scrambling crew, an anchor in their own maelstrom.

As Talyson peered into the depths of the tumultuous waves, it most certainly peered back. With his goggles firmly in place (if not slightly obscured by the rain), he was be able to make out the inky black scales of something in the water. It shifted below before grazing a single slimy fin above the surface, as if mocking the crew with a wave. A light tug on the line indicated that the bait Talyson had put together proved more than enticing, however, the unpanicked pulls suggested no levels of distress at being 'caught.' After her own observations, Thal shouted the revelation out to everyone, "It's an Enshadowed Deliphinid! Prepare to engage!" Her 'Captain's voice' split through the nagging splashes and screaming of the wind, continuing to bark orders to stabilize the ship. She wouldn't have The Marauder capsized by some Void abomination. The girl had been through enough with the damage Starfall did to her.

Round 3: You've encountered an Enshadowed Deliphinid! Choose to pull the catch out of the water or attack from the ship!

Enshadowed Delphinids (common): Once playful Encantados, touched by the void, transform into Enshadowed Delphinids. Their vibrant pink hues now give way to an inky blackness that seems to absorb light, rendering them nearly invisible in the depths of the ocean. The mischievous nature remains, but their water magic takes on an eerie void-touched quality, capable of stirring storms and unsettling the balance of the sea. The Enshadowed Delphinids dance on the boundary between whimsical chaos and the darker currents of the void.
And deep down, you know it too.

Sing to me, I am not doing well
Getting tired of my own words
As the storm picked up, her unease grew. Straining to keep her footing on the heaving, stamping deck, all her fears came alive and turned the voyage into a nightmare.

Catching hold of a piece of rope dangling from a mast, Maea wrapped loops around her arm to ensure the wouldn't go flying off into the water. Upon hearing Thalassa's cry, she inched perilously close to the railing and peered over the edge, catching a glimpse of sleek dark bodies in the deep, and felt a familiar twinge of unease as void tainted water sprayed up over the side of the ship.

Realizing that her fire wouldn't do much, she gritted her teeth and brought her chakram to her leg. Shallow breaths hissed from her, bracing against pain, but in a quick slash she managed; and red power welled up with the seeping blood, begging to be used. Her eyes went black as the abyss as Maea turned BloodBane on the delphinids, at once thrilled and appalled to wield such wicked magic.

Maea wraps a rope around her arm to stay onboard, and uses Basic BloodBane on the delphinids.

Tal moved with the ship with a grace born of long practice aboard the Peregrine, used to scampering about a heaving deck in a storm. It didn't stop him from grabbing onto a rope, however, and wrapping it around his arm several times to secure himself against the less familiar wash of water over the deck. Especially when he saw what was in the water.

And suddenly the storm made a lot more sense.

"I'll try an' haul it up!" Tal hollered back to Maea and the crew, figuring he had the best chance of out-muscling an oversized fish. He was still a slender, rangy man but he was no longer scrawny even if he sometimes felt that way.

He sheathed his Dagger and made a grab for the line that seemed to have the most tension on it. Wrapping his free hand around it with a grunt of effort he began to pull slow but steady, trying to drag the delphinid from the water.

Tal wraps a rope around his arm and uses his other hand to try and haul on the line that looks like it has the Delphinid!

Thalassa
You could do anything,
if you only dared.
Although Talyson was more than strong enough, apparently the particular line he pulled on wasn't. With a resounding 'snap', the line broke apart at the railing, falling into the churning water below. A loud curse burst from Thal's lips as she rushed forward to grab the second line the crew had thrown over. The greedy delphinid had decided to take all of their bait, snagging on a few of the other cords.

As Maea slashed her leg, the bloodbane magic effectively found its target. Thanks to her attack, the storms began to dissipate and Thal felt the resistance decrease enough to begin reeling in the creature. The winds still raged, but they no longer tugged at the sails. The waters calmed enough for the crew to release their vice grips on whatever anchor they'd found. Even the rain lessened to a light drizzle, the mist parting enough for a shimmering of sunlight to slip through. It felt as if everything might be over.

Except that they now had a living, breathing Enshadowed Delphinid slipping over the railing and onto the deck.

Its slimy black exterior seemed like it should glisten in the filtered light, yet it couldn't. Each particle was absorbed into the darkness, leaving a void of visibility. The inky figure wiggled and slid across the deck wood. It wouldn't stay out for long. Keeping a hold on the line in case it attempted to escape, Thal motioned for the others to finish the job.

"Shit!" Tal stumbled back as the line he was holding broke and the tension he was pulling against suddenly disappeared. Only his grip on the rope attached to the yards kept him from falling ass over teakettle, but his backward momentum gave him a glimpse of Maea with her bloody chakram and abyssal black eyes. It wasn't the first time he'd seen her looking like that, but he was damn glad it wasn't aimed at him this time! And sure enough, the storm faded and the crew was able to pull the wounded delphinid aboard. "Thanks, Maea!" he called to his friend. "Y'did good!"

He decided against clapping her on the shoulder until her eyes were back to normal, instead drawing his Dagger and facing the flopping Delphinid with a scowl. "Let's make it quick," he growled under his breath, giving the Captain a sharp nod of agreement as she motioned them forward. Boreal poked her head out of the crow's nest and gave a rumbling roar of encouragement as Tal stayed out of range of the Void-critter's bitey teeth and thrashing flukes and used his Dagger to stab at it!

Sing to me, I am not doing well
Getting tired of my own words
Tal's voice cut through the blood-drunk haze that had settled over her mind, bringing her back to the present with a snap. Shuddering and grimacing against the pain in her leg, Maea carefully unwound her arm from the rope as the ship ceased stomping quite so fiercely. Rounding wide eyed sailors and doing her best to ignore the occasionally wild stares they gave her, she limped her way towards the thrashing encantado - or what should have been one.

"I truly wish we could purge them of the taint instead of killing them." she muttered, standing back with her own weapon at the ready in case the Messenger's dagger wasn't enough to finish the creature off. "Having to decimate entire populations just because they caught the taint - that's just..." Shaking her head, words failed her.

Looking around to find Thalassa in the milling chaos of the deck, she found her past Talyson's shoulder, hauling at the line just like any sailor might. Nodding to herself, Maea said nothing about it - but quietly she was incredibly proud to find the Captain willing to do exactly the same things she asked of others. Not that her esteem had been low in Maea's eyes, but it was definitely rising here.

Maea stands by with her chakram, ready to finish off the Delphinid if Tal's dagger doesn't.

Thalassa
You could do anything,
if you only dared.
Thal was able to keep a solid hold on the line, even as the creature started to regain its faculties. Her vice grip allowed Talyson to land a solid hit on the creature with his dagger, stripping away its life in the blink of an eye. Maea's support was appreciated, even if it was unnecessary, providing an emotional witness to the passing of the once majestic encantado. Now, they watched as the oily blood leaked onto the deck, painting it black and filling the area with the rancid smell of rot. Although the light drizzle still remained, it wasn't enough to rinse away the sticky substance or cleanse them of the sad truth of the Void.

Standing from her place on the rope, Thal didn't hesitate to resume shouting orders. The sailors were to dispose of the body while mopping up every drop of inky 'blood'. She didn't want it polluting her waters, so Thal instructed that it be burnt to an ashy heap. Nothing would remain by the time she was done with it.

As her instructions were being carried out, Thal turned to her honorary crewmembers with a smile. Her clothing was askew and her hair flew wildly around her face, giving her eyes a burning quality that told of the adrenaline rushing through her body. First, she looked to Maea. "I hear your sentiments, but until we find a way to purge the Void, I'll be happy to hunt down every last one." Her confident vibrato had her chest puffing and her eyes twinkling. Then, addressing the both of them, Thal said, "Thank you for your help. Although my crew is extremely capable, this" she gestured to the dying winds and snapped lines "would have been difficult with them alone." It was hard to show humility, but the assistance had more than paid off. Giving them a wide, mischievous grin, she set their course back to the docks. "I'll be sure to call on you again if more appear." She didn't mention that she would be willing to help them in exchange, should they only ask.

Congratulations! Thal, Maea, and Tal have defeated the Enshadowed Delphinid!

Thank you for participating!
