Oh i hope you know - Remi - 09-23-2024

Given that they hadn't technically been kicked out of the Hanged Man, Remi and Ronin certainly slipped out the backdoors with their tails tucked between their legs as if they had. Clearing his throat only once they were outside and feeling as though he'd been holding his breath since Jack took his final parting shot, the Bastion was surprisingly free of tension or hostility as he reached for his husband's hand and sighed.

[say]"My conversation could have gone...a little worse, I guess."[/say] He says with a small wince, his lips curled upwards in a strained smile. [say]"I didn't really hurt him."[/say] Surely it wasn't Remi's fault that Flora's BOyFriEnD was so fragile, and given the Bastion's history and what was at stake, the fact that it would hurt for Jack to swallow for a few days was basically just a slap on the wrist as far as he was concerned.

Wanting to walk on the beach rather than the busy pathway even though it would take longer, Remi wordlessly leads Ronin down onto the sand and toward the shoreline.

RE: Oh i hope you know - Ronin - 09-23-2024

[say]"Yeah? Mine was actually going pretty well until the end..."[/say] Ronin winces at the memory, fresh as it is, and he twines his fingers with Remi's as they drop down onto the soft sand. Grateful for his shoes despite how difficult it will be to walk - it's fucking hot out there - he lets out a long sigh and reaches up with his free hand to rake it through his hair, feeling as if he wants a cold shower just to wash the past few minutes away.

[say]"I don't think it matters if you really hurt him or not, Remi,"[/say] he mutters, glancing across at his husband and giving his fingers an apologetic squeeze. [say]"She told me she loves him. That it started as some crush, but... not any more. She's in love with him."[/say] It makes him a little queasy to even think back on it now that he hasn't got Flora's disapproval staring him dead in the face, the Knight shaking his head.

RE: Oh i hope you know - Remi - 09-23-2024

[say]'Oh yeah?'[/say] Squeezing the Knight's hand, Remi's smile is almost grateful as he glances over his shoulder as if relieved that at least one of them might have done a bit of good. Of course it had been Ronin to do it, anyone might have guessed the same, but the Bastion was appreciative just the same.

[say]"What?"[/say] Gaping and nearly tripping over his own feet, Remi wipes at the cold sweat on his forehead which was rapidly taking the place of the normal effects from the humidity. [say]"Gods."[/say] Groaning, his fingers combing back through his curls, Remi huffs out a breath that's as confused as it is concerned. [say]"Jack said that they only...became official a week or so ago and before then he'd never even thought of them being anything more than a fling."[/say] Remi recounts with a shake of his head. [say]"He never once said he even cared about her, much less loved her."[/say]

RE: Oh i hope you know - Ronin - 09-23-2024

[say]"Mm. I mean obviously I'm not happy about it, and the only thing we can do is make sure Flora will still talk to us if anything does happen..."[/say] Wrinkling his nose at that - he thinks they might have successfully burned that bridge with the state of Jack coming out of the supply closet - Ronin slips his hand free so he can stretch it around Remi instead, drawing him close. [say]"Yeah,"[/say] he repeats as the rest of his comments hit home, the Knight letting out another long breath as if he might change what had happened with enough sighs.

[say]"You reckon one of them was lying?"[/say] he asks, shrugging his shoulders defeatedly. [say]"Because it wouldn't surprise me if Jack was. In fairness, I doubt anyone would want to bare their deepest feelings to you when you have them cornered in a closet,"[/say] he says apologetically. [say]"Either way, it... well, it's real. It's happening. Not like we can ground her out of it."[/say]

RE: Oh i hope you know - Remi - 09-23-2024

[say]"I mean...she can't reasonably have expected us not to say something?"[/say] Jack being a homicidal thief and criminal aside, he was still more than ten years older than Flora was; while age gaps might dwindle away and become meaningless at a certain point, certainly whatever line that started at was far far away from 22.

[say]"I think he must be using her. I don't know for what, though. Or at least, I don't know what's worth having more than a handful of demigods hunting you down at the first sign of a tear."[/say] Wanting to argue with Ronin and point out that at first he'd been more than willing to hear Jack out and it was only once the captain started being an asshole that he'd really gone for him, Remi has to admit that his husband is right.

[say]"So they're just...dating?"[/say] Glancing over his shoulder, Remi raises his eyebrows. [say]"She apparently is in love with him and they've only just started dating?"[/say]

RE: Oh i hope you know - Ronin - 09-23-2024

[say]"I mean..."[/say] Hating himself for it because it means admitting things that they've overlooked or just not looked into enough, Ronin shrugs his shoulders. [say]"Koa aside - and I only got involved in that because she talked to me first - have we ever poked our noses into her love life before now?"[/say] He thinks so, and whilst he agrees that someone like Jack fucking Barclay deserves all the scrutiny in the world, he can also see why Flora would think they're being unfair.

Shaking his head helplessly and focusing on the sand and the prints they are leaving it now that they are on the stretch of coast that will eventually lead them to the Northaven, Ronin gives Remi's shoulder a squeeze. [say]"I don't know,"[/say] he mutters, because he really doesn't. [say]"Maybe they only recently made it official? I know Flora is young, but she doesn't seem the type to throw love out there for no reason."[/say]

RE: Oh i hope you know - Remi - 09-23-2024

[say]"No, but has Flora ever been interested in someone old enough to be her parent who also just has to be one of the worst men in all of Torchline?"[/say] Had they known about Asta and his history if things had continued with the Butcher and the queen, no doubt similar conversations would have been had. [say]"There's...you know, letting her make her own choices and then there's this."[/say]

Not wanting to immediately disagree, still the look that Remi hazards over his shoulder says enough. Of all the things Flora was, rash, impetuous, and dramatic were certainly at the top of the list, for better or worse. Even without having all the details with what had happened with Koa or Asta, Remi absolutely did think his daughter was the sort to push herself into being in love simply by virtue of wanting it enough.

[say]"You...you don't think she's pregnant, do you?"[/say]

RE: Oh i hope you know - Ronin - 09-23-2024

[say]"I mean, that's a pretty particular list,"[/say] Ronin says, chewing at the inside of his cheek. [say]"I'd be a little concerned if there were multiple people she might have been interested in from it."[/say] Not that it makes her choice any less concerning, granted, but hopefully Remi catches his drift. [say]"Maybe she sees something in him that we don't."[/say] He wrinkles his nose, not at all wanting to indulge that train of thought.

Still, it's better than Remi's suggestion, and the Knight's groan of dismay and revulsion isn't one he can really hide, Ronin stepping away from his husband as if to say he doesn't deserve to have his arm around him for that. [say]"Remi, how could you put that thought in my head? That was uncalled for. But also... no, surely not. I mean... mainly I think she'd have told us."[/say]

RE: Oh i hope you know - Remi - 09-23-2024

[say]"Or maybe it's all one big revenge plot from Safrin."[/say] Remi says suddenly, frowning down at their feet, unable to tell for himself whether or not he was onto something or just wildly speculating. [say]"Jack had...these two start tattoos under his eyes and this snake all along his side. But...it was clearly put there by Safrin."[/say] Maybe Safrin had given him some sort of potion to make Flora fall for him? Maybe, despite their daughter's allegiance to the herald, she still was trying to get back at Ronin?

Unsure whether he should laugh at Ronin's theatrics or pretend to be horrified, Remi holds his hands up before ruffling his fingers through his curls. [say]"Oh right, like she'd told us about all of this?"[/say] Pausing, his expression wilting suddenly, he bites at the inside of his cheek before swatting the air between them in an effort to find his husband's hand once again.

[say]"...given how we both just reacted to this...to her just being in a relationship with him...do you think she'd tell us?"[/say]

RE: Oh i hope you know - Ronin - 09-24-2024

Ronin wrinkles his nose at that, very much disliking the idea of this being some sick joke by Safrin - even if it would be a remarkably clever one on the goddess's part. [say]"Well, it's not like Flora is disliked by her directly, especially with all she's done for Torchline in Safrin's name, so... well, if it is revenge, at least I don't think we'd have to worry about her getting hurt. Or rather, if she did get hurt, maybe Safrin would smite Jack instead of us."[/say]

Rubbing at eyes that are suddenly tireder than they'd ever been after having to fight their way to Starfall, the Knight dutifully reaches out to catch his husband's hand, drawing closer to him once more. [say]"Good point. Though I don't know how long you could reasonably hide something like a pregnancy,"[/say] he points out, letting his free hand drop back to his side. [say]"But honestly? After they way we just reacted, I'd be surprised if she tells us anything for a long time after this."[/say]

RE: Oh i hope you know - Remi - 09-24-2024

Groaning to himself and wishing he could take back his fanciful theories if only because they were starting to grow roots in the back of his mind, Remi swallows hard and glances out toward the water where Starfall ominously loomed. Gods, wasn't it enough to fight for the safety of all of Caido, without inadvertently having started a war potentially with his own daughter? Scrubbing one hand through his curls and forcing out a long sigh, he glances to Ronin with an apologetic shake of his head.

[say]"I didn't...mean for it to go as far with Jack as it did. I expected him to either say it was nothing and be able to convince him out of continuing with Flora or...I mean, on the off chance he said he was in love with her, to...I don't know, give him the usual speech."[/say] Shooting an imploring look at the Knight, Remi sighs again. [say]"But he called me dad when I asked him how he thought this would all go. If he pictured proposing to Flora and having the whole big wedding that we both know she wants. Never once did he seem like he cared about the fact that whatever might be between them, it wasn't going to last."[/say] It couldn't.

Feathering his jaw as he steps over a bit of driftwood, the Bastion swallows, the words he'd said replaying over and over in his mind. [say]"I'm honestly not sure what I would have done different even though I don't feel like I got anywhere with him."[/say]

RE: Oh i hope you know - Ronin - 09-24-2024

[say]"Hey, Flora might have been upset but I think you went too easy on him,"[/say] Ronin says, seeing no need to be dishonest about his dislike of their daughter's choice now that it appears the damage is done regardless. [say]"Especially if he called you dad."[/say] Shaking his head and rolling his eyes, once again the Knight is seized with the urge to go and find the captain and punch him in the face, but this time on his husband's behalf as well as his daughter's.

[say]"Let's be honest - the odds of you getting anywhere with him in general were always slim,"[/say] he grumbles, finally stepping in to slip his arm back around Remi, leaning across to kiss his cheek. [say]"We can give it a few days, let Flora cool off. Then maybe I'll try to talk to her again about it. Not as though it can get any worse, right?"[/say] He kicks a bit of driftwood though, just in case.

RE: Oh i hope you know - Remi - 09-24-2024

Ronin's support had Remi's shoulders sagging with relief, the pulse of appreciation through their bond nearly palpable as he glanced over at the Knight and smiled adoringly. [say]"Being a parent is hard."[/say] He whines, also rolling his eyes before stumbling to the side and against the Knight, his own arm sneaking around his husband's waist to tug him close.

[say]"Do you think it's worth inviting Mateo down and making it a proper family dinner? That way Flora won't feel singled out and Mateo won't feel left out."[/say] Remi didn't want to admit just how deeply Jack's comments had affected him, not least of all because it meant that Flora had told the captain about how little time she'd spent with her parents.

RE: Oh i hope you know - Ronin - 09-24-2024

[say]"It really is. No one warns you about this sort of shit,"[/say] Ronin agrees, glancing up to see the Northaven just peeking around a corner in the distance; all the more reason to pick up his pace, since suddenly he wants nothing more than to get hom with Remi where things seem half normal. [say]"Mm? I think that would be a good idea, yeah,"[/say] he says slowly, nodding to the Bastion and offering him a crooked smile.

[say]"We were always planning to do family dinners, right? This can just be the push to, y'know... actually start doing something about it,"[/say] he agrees. [say]"And if nothing else, Mateo and I can be trusted to carry any conversation, so it doesn't matter how awkward it might be at first with Flora."[/say] Unless she invites Jack along, which could get interesting.

Interesting in that the captain would get murdered, of course.
