RE: Nails on my skin like the teeth of a shark - Aurelia - 09-07-2024

Aurelia turned and stopped just in time to watch the unicorn rage through their line, narrowly missing its charge against Talyson. Relief and determination intermingled all at once as she summoned twin flames in each hand, ready to hurl them at the creature in an instant [since running had not occurred to her yet, even if she were able].

However, the sound of rocks clacking against one another and thudding across the grass caught her attention in the next moment as a dragon emerged. She noted the ice on its breath and her mind instantly grappled with the idea that -- perhaps -- it would be vulnerable to fire, opposite in element as it was. That or impervious, but there was only one way to find out.

Taking a breath to steady herself, to ensure that no one was in her line of fire that she did not want catching it, she hurled a fireball directly at the dragon Daemon's face with a wordless yell.

RE: Nails on my skin like the teeth of a shark - Hadama - 09-07-2024

Bringing up the rear, Hadama was a little farther from the action than the rest. It gave him a little more time to study the situation - by a matter of seconds - before he chose his response. As close as the unicorn still was to Tal he hesitated for a moment and activated his armor first. There was no reason to take unnecessary risks with damage when they were only just beginning their trek.

Aware that waiting might result in someone getting hurt, he moved up to stand next to his fellow Torcher to create a defensive line with her. "Do you have the dragon?" he called to Aurelia to ensure better communication in the swirl of moving bodies and sudden violence.

Not wanting to risk throwing her strike off, instead he aimed a single gravity spike at the unicorn near the expedition's leader, focusing on precision over brute force so that he did not accidentally miss and cause friendly fire. He hoped to deter it from further attempts on the courier's life, though from the madness in the Daemon's eyes he did not think it would stop its aggression.

RE: Nails on my skin like the teeth of a shark - Talyson - 09-07-2024

The Daemons crashed through the expedition and the melee quickly turned into a confusing swirl of moving bodies, weapons, and magic that threatened to quickly become chaos. The Daemons did not seem to come from the same barrow, but nevertheless even when subjected to 'friendly' fire they stayed focused on the intruding humans rather than (conveniently) turning on each other.

Stung by the dragon's ice, the unicorn bucked and twisted as it let out a trumpet of anger. Whether due to the movement of his target or his unfamiliarity with the weapon he held, Zavien's attack missed the silver unicorn, but luckily it didn't seem to realize that he had tried to hurt it.

It was far too distracted by the twin attacks of Hadama and Talyson. A warping of gravity in the air above its withers elongated into a spear of compacted gravity that buckled it to its knees. As it forced its way to its feet, Tal's hastily drawn Dagger lashed out to catch it in a deep cut across its chest. It couldn't see who had attacked it with magic, but it charged the courier once more with murder in its heart and Tal had to scramble to avoid it a second time - this time doing so at a considerably narrower margin as it nearly gored him.

On the other end of their battle line, Aurelia's fire certainly caught the dragon Daemon's attention. It flapped mightily to lift itself away from the searing blow, turning with a hiss to dive down at the Torchline duo. Mad eyes focused on Hadama as the larger - and perhaps easier to hit? - of the two humans, but the torrent of icy breath it unleashed on the demigod struck only grass as the big man managed to shift to the side and let the attack go past.

"Zav an' I got th' unicorn!" Tal yelled - though his confidence might have been misplaced?? - even as he waved at the horned Daemon to keep its attention away from the Dragoon. "Hey, pointy! What're y'aimin' at, anyways?!"

RE: Nails on my skin like the teeth of a shark - Zavien - 09-08-2024

It didn't really surprise him that his first attack with the trident missed, but it still caused him to groan out in frustration. Zavien was grateful to see Tal calling out coordination. It would make it easier to organize their attacks.

Solidifying his feet, he prepared to loose another blast from the trident. [say]"Get ready Tal! I'm going again!"[/say] Making sure his friend was out of the way, he took careful aim, ensuring that the trajectory was on course with where he predicted the unicorn Daemon would be in its frantic movements. As it leapt into the air, he aimed for the landing point before firing away.

Zavien attacks the unicorn Daemon with the staff again, making sure to take careful aim this time.

RE: Nails on my skin like the teeth of a shark - Hadama - 09-09-2024

He could feel the chill as the blast of icy breath came near him, but Hadama shifted adroitly out of its path before the damage could do more than inconvenience him. The dragon was a much smaller target than the unicorn, and being airborne made it more of a challenge. Still, the unicorn seemed the more dangerous threat, and he looked askance at the Messenger for splitting their strength.

It was not his hunt, however. And though his jaw tightened briefly he did not disagree with the orders he was given. "Yes," he called out to the courier before turning his attention back to Aurelia and their designated opponent. "I will try to knock it into your fire if you aim low," he said in the brief moments between rounds the Daemon's return - assuming it continued to focus on them.

He waited to see where his fellow Torcher was aiming and then unleashed a Gravity Spike at the dragon to try and force it down into her magical attack so it couldn't dodge.

RE: Nails on my skin like the teeth of a shark - Aurelia - 09-09-2024

Aurelia frowned as the dragon flew out of the way of the fireball, though her eyes widened when it immediately turned to divebomb her and Hadama. Even though it focused on him [for now], Aurelia still instinctively jumped back. When its breath frosted over the grass, she was well out of the way. Fortunately, Hadama reacted quickly enough as well.

When Talyson called out, she glanced over her shoulder to see him and Zavien bravely taking on the unicorn. With the group's focus properly divided now, Aurelia was fine with keeping her attentions on the dragon. Only, this time she hoped she could actually hit it.

Nodding at Hadama, she aimed her hands and stepped aside in such a way that she could blast a cone of flames without risking any of her companions in the line of fire. With any luck,  and if Hadama's gravity spike struck true, this would be harder for the Daemon to dodge than the fireball.

RE: Nails on my skin like the teeth of a shark - Talyson - 09-09-2024

Hadama and Aurelia engaged in smooth teamwork that showed how Torchers were not to be underestimated. The Tidebreaker's gravity spike formed above the flying dragon and lanced down through the center of its body, knocking it directly into Aurelia's line of (literal) fire. The Daemon roared its fury but under the combination of attacks it succumbed to its wounds and fell to the ground, truly dead now.

Zavien continued to struggle against the unicorn as it dodged and spun on its hooves to charge at Tal. The Breaker's second attack, however, finally got its attention and it turned to stab its horn at him instead! Talyson made a frantic stab with his Dagger at its haunch as it turned away from him, distracting the unicorn just enough that it missed its attack on the Dragoon.

Wounded and streaming blood the unicorn spun around again with a fierce cry of rage and Tal backpedaled a few steps to close ranks with Zavien. "Don't give up! We've almost got it!"

RE: Nails on my skin like the teeth of a shark - Zavien - 09-09-2024

He missed again. Zavien looked at the trident, wondering if it was defective in some way, but saw nothing wrong with it. The sparkly coral didn't show any signs of imperfection. While he was inspecting the weapon, the unicorn Daemon came charging at him and would have succeeded if not for Tal.

Backpedaling with the courier, he chuckled nervously. [say]"Thanks, man! That was close."[/say] He could thank him more later, but as he rallied them to attack again, Zavien lunged forward as well. This time, he stood right in the path of the creature, determined not to miss again. He trusted that the others would have his back as it came barreling towards them.

RE: Nails on my skin like the teeth of a shark - Aurelia - 09-10-2024

It worked! With Hadama's aid, the dragon fell from its perch in the air with a satisfying thud upon the ground, its scales blackened and smoking. Aurelia turned to look at her fellow Torchliner with a grin, saying, [say]"Good thinking"[/say] but as she did she saw the unicorn Daemon turning on its heel in a bloody frenzy toward Zavien and Talyson.

The sight of the scene sent a pang of panic through her but, fortunately, neither of them looked as though they'd been harmed - yet, anyway... Zavien was going in for another attack already, placing himself directly in front of the beast. [say]"Get out of the way!"[/say] She started to yell, but knew it was likely too late for that.

So Aurelia did something equally as foolish. She grabbed onto the hilt of her sword and ran into the fray. Her intent was to intercept the unicorn before it hit Zavien, drawing her blade and holding it in both hands. Swinging quickly and with all her might, she aimed for its horn, hoping to counter its attack.

RE: Nails on my skin like the teeth of a shark - Hadama - 09-10-2024

He barely had time to give Aurelia a nod of satisfaction at their teamwork before he was twisting to follow her line of sight. Although they had managed to bring down their own Daemon one still remained, wounded and in a frenzy as it struck out against the other half of their hunting party. "We should--" he began to say, but it was already too late. His fellow Torcher was flinging herself boldly into the fray and Hadama paused only a moment longer to assess the situation before striding after her.

His legs were long but running did not come naturally to him and he didn't dare unleash his gravity in such a swirling melee. He settled for getting as close as he could before anyone was hurt and reaching within himself for his newest ability, letting the soothing burst of moonlight illuminate the twilit valley and wash over his allies.

RE: Nails on my skin like the teeth of a shark - Talyson - 09-10-2024

Of all the things Zavien might have done, Tal wasn't expecting him to step forward and into the courier's line of fire. He jerked his arm to a stop before he could complete the stabbing-the-air motion that would have skewered the Dragoon, swearing out loud.

And then it all got very intense very quickly.

The unicorn lowered its head and pawed the ground once before lunging towards Zavien. The trident in his hands glowed and launched a globe of glittery water that struck the Daemon squarely in its chest, causing it to stumble but not fall. That moment of unsteadiness, however, created an opening so that Aurelia could close the distance just as it resumed its charge, horn lowered to skewer the Dragoon. Instead a flare of sudden moonlight coated the humans, and the Torcher's sword struck true against its horn, turning its head to the side by force so that it missed its intended target.

And Tal finally managed to step to the side and make another stabbing motion in the air with his Dagger that crossed the distance between himself and the Daemon, taking it in the neck. It grunted at the impact and stumbled before sinking to its knees and then collapsing with a final sigh. The last light in its maddened eyes flickered and went out...

And the Barrows grew silent around them once more.

"Is anyone hurt?" Tal called out shakily. He didn't think so, but he waited for their responses before he moved cautiously towards the fallen Unicorn. He nudged it with his boot to make sure it wasn't just pretending before he knelt beside it and reached for its horn with a grimace. "An' sorry about this. I'm questin' for Ludo an', uh... this is gonna get messy."

RE: Nails on my skin like the teeth of a shark - Zavien - 09-11-2024

The ensuing chaos was more than a bit thanks to Zavien's stupidity. Blocking Tal's attack, forcing Aurelia to intervene, and nearly getting turned into a kabob on multiple occasions had him grateful for the final blow. He might have finally landed a hit, but it came with a wave of embarrassment for his actions. Making sure that he hadn't missed a brush with death, he cleared his throat.

[say]"I'm good. Everyone else?"[/say] He looked to the others, checking for any obvious injuries. When he noticed none, he gave Aurelia a grateful smile. [say]"Thanks for the assistance. I obviously didn't think that through. I was so focused on not missing that I got a little reckless."[/say] His hand ran through his hair, a blush on his cheeks at the admission. He had been a little too impulsive, possibly putting the others in a tough position. It wouldn't happen again.

Hearing his friend's words, he looked to the unicorn horn harvesting. Zavien raised his eyebrow at the strange requirement Ludo had made of Tal, but he wasn't completely surprised. After all, he'd seen the courier forced to do much worse

Zavien checks on the others.

RE: Nails on my skin like the teeth of a shark - Aurelia - 09-11-2024

Her momentum and Hadama's unique moon magic had provided enough leverage that the unicorn was forced aside and, before anyone else could act, Talyson moved in to finish the job. She stood in place for a few lingering moments, sword in hands and feet spread shoulder-length apart, ready for something else to pop out of the Barrows at any moment. But nothing did -- for now -- so she sheathed her weapon and relaxed... a little.

Upon Tal's question, Aurelia didn't check herself, didn't need to. Rather, she turned around and gave Zavien a scrutinizing once-over to ensure the man really hadn't been hurt in the chaos. It had all happened so fast, she couldn't have said for sure whether the unicorn had made contact before she'd hit it.

Instead of finding injuries, however, she found him smiling gratefully and his cheeks coloring red as he admitted his foolishness. Aurelia shook her head. [say]"Sheesh! I thought you were gonna be speared clean through!"[/say] Then, she walked over and gave him a friendly nudge with her elbow, [say]"But hey, it's okay. You did hit it and we had your back. All apart of the plan, right?"[/say]

A past version of her might've gone on a tangent about being more careful; she might've even gotten real angry about it and yelled, too. But now, even if she dug around for it, she couldn't muster up that kind of energy. He seemed to realize his own mistake on top of that, so she didn't see a need to make him feel any shame. Nobody was hurt and Gods knew Aurelia had done plenty of stupid shit in her time.

[say]"We made pretty quick work of those Daemons,"[/say] she commented, looking around at the others, [say]"well done, everyone."

"Hadama, you continue to surprise me with your magics. What was it that you did just there? It felt like it effected me somehow."[/say]

Aurelia congratulates everyone on their victory~ and must know more about Hadama's magic

RE: Nails on my skin like the teeth of a shark - Hadama - 09-11-2024

It could have gone much, much worse than it did.

Hadama did not exhale the breath he had been holding until Zavien assured everyone that he was unharmed. Only then did he relax his guard and incline his head at Aurelia's confident statement; they had, indeed, made quick work of the rage-filled creatures. He inclined his head in agreement, but when he saw what Talyson was doing to the fallen Daemon he watched the courier impassively, emerald eyes resting on the courier's grim task with a palpable weight.

Only when Aurelia spoke to him directly did he return his attention to the others, and he inclined his head to Zavien first. "The dragon missed," he explained succinctly, considering the other man's explanation for his own actions before nodding slowly in acceptance. "I am glad you were not hurt, either." Though it had been a near thing at the end.

"It is a Lunar Blessing," he then explained to his fellow Torcher. Zavien had felt it before, but it was new to the Fireheart and the Messenger. "It bolsters allies, and harms enemies, though I cannot extend its power very far yet." He glanced up to the sky where the first stars of evening were twinkling through the faded rose and violet fingers of sunset. To the east the moon was rising above the Barrows, a sliver of silver on the horizon that buoyed his spirits.

"How much farther will we hunt tonight?" he asked their leader of the moment, politely curious in spite of what the young man was doing to the fallen Daemon.

Hadama answers Aurelia and checks in with their game plan
