RE: all by my lonely - Ronin - 12-22-2024 [say]"I don't know, Flora."[/say] Unable to control the prickles of frustration that are borne from a lack of knowledge over anything the Doubletake is doing, Ronin nonetheless has to take a slow, deep breath and let it out again before continuing. [say]"He said he was going to find her, but that he failed."[/say] He waves a hand to the other, rather crumpled letter on the kitchen table. [say]"That one arrived just a little bit after Remi left to go and find you."[/say] He still has to respond to it, in fact, but that can go on the later list. Rubbing at his forehead, he slouches back against the headboard and tries to force the tension that keeps trying to creep into his limbs. [say]"We both have to wait,"[/say] he corrects, because forgive the Knight his sins, but having Remi flit away with Hotaru now of all seasons is a recipe for disaster in and of itself. [say]"I can... do you want me to find Jack and bring him here? Or I can take you to The Ark?"[/say] RE: all by my lonely - Flora - 12-22-2024 Taken slightly aback by the tone of Ronin's voice—wasn't she the one who'd just been murdered and then kidnapped?—Flora lets her eyes dart to yet another letter, before returning to the Knight, far too wrapped up in everything she'd just been told to even consider how Remi flying Hotaru off to Halo might make him feel. Unfairly, perhaps, she locked onto the words he failed, finding them somehow inexcusable. What if Hotaru had brought her to the Family? What if she'd been infected? Would Sunjata just be sorry, then? That as a demigod, as her soon to be step-father, as her mother's fiance, he'd just failed? Fingers of tension pulled at the roots of her hair and though Flora had broken the habit years ago, she found her nails slipping between her teeth where she mercilessly gnawed at them. [say]"How do I know you're not infected?"[/say] The queen wonders, shooting Ronin a look over her shoulder. How do I know Jack isn't? RE: all by my lonely - Ronin - 12-23-2024 Pinching at the bridge of his nose, Ronin forces out another long breath before letting his hand drop and glancing tiredly across at Flora. [say]"If I were infected, why would I have brought you back to Torchline instead of trying to nudge you towards The Family?"[/say] He asks, the roots of incredulity starting to burrow through his words, though he does his best to keep his voice soft. [say]"If you want me to prove it, I'll find some void creature and show you how much it wants to bite my face off. We'll have to go outside of Torchline for that, though."[/say] Given, you know, the whole region is protected from the void. Getting to his feet and glancing helplessly around, he gestures to the door. [say]"If you don't trust that it's safe here, I can help you to get home? Or if you don't want me around, I can find someone you'd prefer?"[/say] He'll do whatever she wants, so long as she gives him a tiny bit of something to work with. RE: all by my lonely - Flora - 12-23-2024 The fact that Ronin appears to be upset with her is going to fuel more than a few conversations between Flora and Mateo in the future—don't worry, they'll be sending Elizabeth's therapist bills directly to you, Ronin and Remi—but for the time being she merely meets his stare with a pointed one of her own. [say]"Sunjata was infected and he went with you to Starfall, right?"[/say] It's a shockingly good point, one that clearly has Flora surprised given the way her eyebrows raise. [say]"Maybe you still hate my mom enough to want to make her look bad in the Family's eyes or something."[/say] Okay, less of a good point. Scowling at the idea of leaving Torchline, Flora looks sharply away from the Knight, not wanting him to see the indecision that furrowed her brow. What she wanted, regardless of whether or not she now thought she could fully trust him, was Jack. Only...only she couldn't go to him like this. Not wild and wired, not a broken shell of the girl he'd fallen in love with; not so soon after coming back from the dead, anyway. [say]"Can you walk me home?"[/say] Flora's expression softens as she glances over her shoulder at Ronin, her fingers anxiously smoothing the furs over her knees. RE: all by my lonely - Ronin - 12-23-2024 Ronin's lips part to argue, only to find himself caught in the very same good point that takes the Doubletake unawares, and he can only blink at her a few times at that. [say]"I... I'm not infected, Flora. I promise. I only want you to feel safe, and to be somewhere that will make you comfortable,"[/say] he tells her. Whatever momentary fury he may have felt at hearing that Hotaru had sequestered her away, too, it has long turned itself down to a simmer. (Granted, his thoughts are very much swinging towards the Remi and Hotaru side of things, so that might be why). As she finally asks him a question he's confident he can answer, Ronin sighs hard enough to drag his shoulders down a few inches, and he nods. [say]"Of course I can walk you home,"[/say] he tells her softly. [say]"I'm sorry, Flora. Everything sort of blew up over the past hour or so."[/say] Smiling apologetically and offering her a hand to help her to her feet, the Knight will draw her into a hug should she accept it, his brow furrowing. [say]"Is there anything else you need? I can bring it to your place."[/say] RE: all by my lonely - Flora - 12-29-2024 Not in the state of mind to have a rational conversation, the queen merely presses her lips together and gives her head a final discouraging shake. He could be infected. They all could be, and while all certainly included Jack, there was no one she'd rather be with. Accepting Ronin's hand with downcast eyes, as Flora slips from the bed she allows herself to press briefly against his side. If there was a violet warmth to his embrace she couldn't feel it, not that it provided any amount of evidence that he wasn't infected. [say]"No, I just..."[/say] wanted Jack. [say]"I just need a minute to process all of this, y'know?"[/say] Maybe once she took the hottest shower she could stand she'd be in a position to make her way toward the Ark, but she certainly didn't need Ronin's help with any of the steps in getting there. Glancing around the room, her parchment and compass notably lacking, the queen bites at the inside of her cheek before nodding toward the door. [say]"Ready when you are."[/say] ~FIN |
