RE: things that haven't happened yet - Remi - 04-30-2025

Remi chuckles softly at Liam’s sheepishness, shaking his head with easy warmth. [say]"It’s not rude,"[/say] he says. [say]"I wouldn’t have mentioned it if I didn’t expect questions."[/say] His sea-glass eyes drift again toward the crimson river, as if the shifting reflection might help him untangle the story. [say]"Ludo and I go back longer than most would expect. Before I was its demigod, I gave it a favour. A pretty significant one, actually."[/say]

His tone grows a touch wry, the corners of his mouth tilting upward faintly. [say]"It brought a friend of mine back from the dead. Or… part of her. She came back as my companion—a unicorn. I didn’t know then how clever the herald could be with its wording."[/say] He runs a hand back through his curls, ruffling them further. [say]"Years later, Ludo called in the favour. Made me its demigod. For a while, I was... its blade, I suppose. I’d be sent to find people who were going to die badly—burning, drowning, torn apart—and I’d ease them out before it got too awful. My magic then was illusion and memory. I’d make the place feel like home, bring in someone they loved, try to... soften the way out."[/say]

Remi’s voice stays calm, steady, but there’s a weight in it. Something carved in with time and wear. [say]"But it’s hard to keep your head above water when all you do is usher people into the end. The world starts looking darker. Smaller. Like everything is just something waiting to die."[/say] His thumb taps absently against his leg before he offers a dry, not unkind smile. [say]"Ludo... didn’t like that. Said I wasn’t fun anymore. So it gave me to Mort."[/say]

Nearby, a bird flittered past, its wings brushing the Crimson Cataract and sending a shower of red rain down upon the two men. Liam watched it go, a faint smile on his face, before turning his attention back to Remi. The man was far more willing to answer questions than Liam suspected he might be in the same shoes. It was appreciated, if only to appease his curiosity.

He considered Remi's story with a solemnity that spoke of how seriously he took the gods, only speaking once he'd had a moment to really think about it. [say]"It sounds like being Ludo's demigod was a difficult life,"[/say] he said finally. [say]"Is it better, being Mort's?"[/say] He knew of the God of Death, of course, but had not had the chance to meet him personally. Was there a difference, he wondered, between the herald and its god?

Remi watches the red droplets ripple across the river’s surface before he nods, slowly, as if the answer carries weight even now. [say]"It really was,"[/say] he says, his voice low but honest. [say]"I don’t think I realised how much until I stepped away from it. Taking lives day after day, though... even gently, even for a purpose—it grinds something out of you."[/say]

His sea-glass gaze drifts to the forest around them, to the filtered light through the trees, and he seems to breathe a little deeper for it. [say]"Being Mort’s is different. My role now is to protect the boundary between life and death. To preserve the peace of it. It’s not flashy, and it doesn’t ask for blood—but after everything I’ve seen, I find it... satisfying. Grounding, even."[/say]

A small smile flickers at the corner of his mouth. [say]"And Mort—he’s kind. Patient in a way that Ludo never was. There are never any games or uncertainties."[/say] Remi shrugs slightly, as if that simplicity is still something that surprises him now and then.

RE: things that haven't happened yet - Liam - 05-06-2025

Liam couldn't imagine being the kinder equivalent of the grim reaper. Even if Remi's job had been to take lives out of kindness, to do so as gently as possible... that sort of work had to leave a stain on one's soul. The soldier wasn't sure he could do it. He already hated the idea of killing - ironic, given his line of work - but to be faced with that day in and day out, whether in peace or wartime...

But being Mort's, it seemed, was different - and in a positive way. Liam wasn't entirely sure that he understood Remi's role, but if it brought the man peace, then the soldier could only assume that it was worthwhile. [say]"It sounds like a big improvement, if I'm being honest."[/say] Was that terrible to say? Would Ludo smite him for it? Hoping that perhaps the herald had other things to worry about just now, Liam shook his head. [say]"Thank you for humoring me. I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions. I grew up in Stormbreak, so I like to think I'm as pious as the next, but there's something about hearing real experiences with the gods that just... I don't know. Makes it all make more sense."[/say]

Remi smiles at that, and it’s not the kind of smile that fades quickly. [say]"You’re not wrong,"[/say] he says gently. [say]"It was an improvement. A mercy, even, though Ludo might not frame it that way."[/say] There’s no venom in his voice—no bitterness—but a quiet honesty that speaks of someone who has made peace with the ghosts of his past, even the divine ones.

At Liam’s thanks, the Bastion tilts his head slightly, studying the man beside him with a flicker of fondness. [say]"You don’t need to thank me for that. I think the gods want to be understood more than they let on."[/say] His fingers twitch, like he might reach for something—then still. [say]"And anyway, if someone’s going to carry the weight of belief, it helps to know the shape of what you’re holding."[/say]

He lets his gaze drift again to the river, then back to Liam, something softer in his expression now. Then, rising with a subtle stretch of his limbs, Remi dusts off his hands. [say]"But I should let you get back to your solitude—or your balance, I suppose."[/say] A quirk of a smile follows, quiet and warm. [say]"It’s a rare thing, after all. Worth protecting."[/say]
