RE: Come out of your shell - Ronin - 06-16-2025

[say]"Oh, you really ought to give it a go,"[/say] Ronin tells Hadama with a crooked smile, as if they're discussing some new gadget worth trying out. [say]"You might find that you're a big fan of it. And if you think that's good, let me tell you about semi-retirement."[/say] Laughing to himself, he bends to reach for what turns out not to be a shell but a lovely bit of sea-glass, the Knight pocketing that before grabbing up a few small white clam shells.

As he straightens, he hears Hadama's voice ring out to give them their near-ultimatum, and Ronin offers him a nod that pretends at weight and solemnity. [say]"I had better get back to my mission,"[/say] he informs him, tipping him a wink and splashing away further into the shallows. Having spread out a bit more, he's able to locate a cluster of speckled and striped scallop shells, and he diligently washes them off and adds them to his basket, before starting to dig up a rather large conch shell.

Hopefully it isn't still inhabited, as Hadama had mentioned about those on the sea floor.

RE: Come out of your shell - Hadama - 06-16-2025

Hadama regarded Ronin with outward solemnity, choosing another scalloped shell in soft orange as he considered the other demigod's words. "Perhaps I will try this 'sleeping in' and see how it goes,' he agreed at last. "Before attempting anything more difficult." He dropped a sly wink to Ronin as he straightened and gave his back a slightly theatrical crack.

A few minutes and a few shells later he raised his gaze to the sky once more and judged the 'contest' to be over. "Bring your baskets for counting," he rumbled to the participants, moving to dry land and the tables set up there. The food had been cleared away from them, making room for baskets to be emptied and shells tallied. Hadama moved from one pile to the next, counting up total number but also making a note of how many different colors and shapes were present in each haul.

There would, he saw with satisfaction, be ample to place around the Coast, but for now there were the winners to announce.

And, truly, it was not even close.

"Thank you all for coming today. The winners of the favor are Nova Marin and Sohalia Lumaris." The look he gave to the bubbly young Marin held a glimmer of fond humor, quietly pleased at her fair-won victory. Sohalia received a more reserved inclination of his head, his face unreadable and his thoughts quiet on her win.

Last one to post, please slap a fin on it and turn the lights out on your way out the door!

RE: Come out of your shell - Ronin - 06-16-2025

Having been happily collecting a few olive shells when Hadama calls that their time is up, Ronin straightens, adjusts his sunglasses and makes for the shore. He hands in his basket for the counting alongside all the others and drops back to lurk, of course, by the tables of food, and when Hadama comes to announce their winner - or winners as it happens - the Knight has already poured himself another strong cup of coffee and is busy scarfing a pastry (and grabbing a couple for the road so he can bring breakfast back to his husband).

Light applause rings across the crowd for Nova and Sohalia, and Ronin dutifully joins in by putting his pastry in his mouth to free up his hands. [say]"Congrats!"[/say] he adds to the general cheer when he's able to speak again, before sinking back to sit in an empty deckchair. The Knight will remain for a few minutes more (read: until he has finished his coffee) before he wombles back down the shoreline for home, good deed done and shells collected.

RE: Come out of your shell - Vesper - 06-16-2025

Vesper stays quiet as the shell hunt winds down, his pale gaze cast along the tideline where seafoam fingers curl around scattered treasures. His shadows twitch with idle curiosity, slipping through pools and hollows as he stoops to pick up one last spiral shell—striped and worn, its colours dulled by time.

When Hadama’s voice carries across the beach, low and even, Vesper straightens. He gives the basket a once-over—half full, casually chosen, no real effort to compete—and carries it over with his usual unhurried stride. The handoff is wordless. He doesn’t need to argue his case. He knows what he brought, and that’s enough.

As Nova and Sohalia are announced the winners, Vesper glances toward his sister with a dry smile. He gives her a low whistle and bounces his eyebrows in mock solemnity, as if acknowledging a queen ascending her glittering throne of crab-studded couture. A flash of approval glints beneath the teasing—subtle, but there.

Then he turns, the grin fading into something quieter. The tide’s coming in, and the Hanged Man is calling. Without fanfare, he drifts back toward Torchline’s heart, shadows trailing behind like the tide’s own reflection.

RE: Come out of your shell - Sohalia - 06-17-2025

Fortunately for Sohalia, she was saved from having to figure out how to answer when Hadama called the end of the competition. With a smile for Nova, Soh said, [say]"I'll tell you all about it - later."[/say] Specifically when later would come, well... that would be a mystery.

Soh lugged her basket over to Hadama, watching as he counted. She couldn't quite place her finger on it, but there was something... different about him lately. He'd always been friendly to her, but now he regarded her with a sort of distance that she wasn't entirely sure of. When she and Nova were announced the winners, her suspicions were only confirmed - where Nova received a fond look, the glance to Soh was more reserved.

Unease bubbled within the Luminary's chest; she would need to seek him out soon. But for now, she simply turned to Nova with a grin. [say]"Congratulations!"[/say] she squealed. Once the others had dispersed, she added, [say]"I've got to go, but let's meet up soon."[/say] Then she was on her way.

RE: Come out of your shell - Nova - 06-18-2025

She doesn't miss that Soh dodges the question, her mouth opening to ask a stream of follow-up inquiries before they're being summoned over. Nova tables the curiosity in favor of competitiveness, racing to hand her basket to the Mer King first as she bounces excitedly to find out the results, not that she likes what she hears.

Tying isn't the same as winning, and it should come as no surprise that Nova isn't happy about the arrangement. As much as she likes Soh, sharing isn't her strong suit - least of all victory. Her enjoyment is a bit dampened, although she's still immensely proud of the collection she'd managed to gather; still, her smile is half-hearted when she accepts the congratulations, doing her best to pretend that she'd been the only winner.

Since a 'favor' isn't a physical prize for her to hold in this moment, Nova shoots Hadama a wave and a fleeting [say]"Thanks!"[/say] before racing down the beach after her brother, her crab dress flapping behind her in the breeze. [say]"Wait for me!"[/say]
