RE: first burn - Jack - 09-18-2025 A Disney princess isn't exactly what Jack has in mind, and he raises an eyebrow as Nova bounces over to join him, the girl casually brushing debris from the lapel of his coat. Still, he doesn't stop her, flexing his fingers against the cold and tilting his head at the bowl of fire before them. No longer under the influence of either of their magic, it settles into high, crackling flame, and the captain considers only for a moment before nodding. [say]"What's the worst could happen?"[/say] he drawls, ensuring the ground before them isn't slippery before he takes off to the Eye of Fire. Granted, Jack absolutely does cheat, using a pulse of power to part the flames as he picks up speed and leaps through, but it does curl around him menacingly for a moment, which he thinks puts on a good enough show. And it doesn't singe his clothes, so all the better. [say]"A'right, now you,"[/say] he says, gesturing for Nova to follow. RE: first burn - Nova - 09-19-2025 She's actually baffled that Jack agrees, but more than happy to watch as he jumps over the bonfire, the flames barely daring to touch him to add more than a dramatic flare of showmanship. It immediately has her bouncing, already inching to follow before he's calling her forward. Her mind is a layer of glittering ideas and calculations, magic buzzing on her skin in preparation for the stunt. [say]"Okay! Here I come!"[/say] Then she sprints, her quick steps devoid of any hesitations or reservations as she leaps through the flames like a majestic creature splitting the sea. There's a smile plastered on her face, laughter on her lips as she replicates Jack enough to keep the fire from her skin, only feeling the caress of heat at her fingertips that she spreads wide like a pair of wings. Nova isn't quite as good as Jack yet, but she doesn't notice the quiet singing of her boots as she hops in front of the captain. [say]"That was awesome! Feel any different?"[/say] She looks at her fingers then shows them to him like he might be able to see the current of magic underneath. [say]"I don't notice anything."[/say] RE: first burn - Jack - 09-22-2025 Making sure to place himself well to the side of Nova as she bounces and crackles and eventually bounds her way through the pillar of flame (Jack has no intention of being knocked over when she lands), he's tucked his hands back into his pockets by the time she lands, glancing down at her smoking boots. Luckily, the snow and melted ice put them out soon enough - and without any magical interference needed, too - and the captain inhales and lets out a long sigh at her question. [say]"Same as ever,"[/say] he confirms. [say]"Guess it's just a myth after all. Still, can't say we didn't try."[/say] And if there's ever an opportunity to gather some extra power around himself, Jack is guaranteed to at least give it a go. [say]"C'mon,"[/say] he suggests to Nova, already moving back to the parted hedgerows to begin picking their way out of the Queen's Gambit once again. [say]"Let's get the fuck outta here."[/say] RE: first burn - Nova - 09-24-2025 Blissfully naive of the sizzle at her feet, Nova shrugs her shoulders. [say]"It was still fun!"[/say] It would have been a lot more fun if she'd come out of the fire shooting lightning or hovering off the ground with a new influx of power, but she'll have to settle for the warmth still tickling her fingers and the memory of Jack humoring her. It's planted in her brain, even if he tries to act all cool and nonchalant with his hands in his pockets. She follows him to the opening of the maze with her usual bounce, searching for her first patch of snow to hop in. [say]"Okay! Wanna grab a snack? Magic always makes me so hungry."[/say] Plopping down into the snow with a light crunch, she tilts her head to look at him, curiosity gleaming in her blue eyes. [say]"Does that happen to you?"[/say] And the entire way back through the maze, she pesters him with questions about his magic, comparing what he says to her own experience as she poses in piles of white flakes.
