RE: maybe then you'll get a little heated too - Vesper - 12-03-2025

Vesper meets Jack’s shit-eating grin with one of his own, sharp and bright and edged with a wicked sort of humour that cuts through the heaviness in the room. There’s something almost reckless in the expression; like for the first time since the Glade, he remembers there’s air in his lungs. [say]"Maybe,"[/say] he echoes, drawl smooth and slow, [asy]"but seems to me there’s a big difference between buildin' somethin’ new...and re-buildin' the same old shit every time someone kicks your sandcastle down."[/say] It’s a gentle clapback, not meant to sting, though Jack is right about time, about patience, about not flingin’ himself from one region to the next in search of purpose. But Vesper is right too: they aren’t men built to patch up what’s been razed. They’re built to carve.

He leans back, tilting his head, the grin still playing at the corner of his mouth before he nudges Jack’s shoulder with his own; light, deliberately mocking. [say]"Thanks dad,"[/say] he says, dripping with sarcasm but far too playful for it to land as an insult. Then he glances over at his half-packed bag, rakes his fingers through his pale hair, and blows out a breath that finally sounds like direction instead of escape. [say]"If the Ark don’t mind a detour,"[/say] he murmurs, voice smoothing out into something quieter, more certain, [say]"I wouldn’t mind bein' dropped off. "[/say]

[say]"You concentrate on your own fuckin' sand-castles an' leave mine alone,"[/say] Jack quips back immediately, the words warmed by the smile still tugging at his lips. [say]"I am buildin' somethin' new in King's End, for what it's worth. I'm gonna start stealin' from pirate ships."[/say] The irony isn't lost on him either, and that's entirely the point. [say]"Well. That is if some starry upstart don't convince me to rule the fuckin' woods."[/say]

Nudging Vesper back and pulling a face as he's called dad, however playfully, the moniker nevertheless doesn't feel as sacrilegous as it once did. Rolling to his feet as the boy glances towards his half-packed duffel, Jack offers him a lazy salute. [say]"I'm sure I can arrange somethin',"[/say] he says with a grin, heading for the cabin door. [say]"Until then, you might wanna check what you packed, or you'll be explorin' the woods with nothin' but shirts an' socks."[/say]
