What do sock puppets eat? Finger foods! - Soleil - 08-30-2024

A white wolf sits at a shrine, alone and with a strange object held gingerly in its mouth. Her ears flick backward in a clear sign of irritation before lowering her head to gently drop what is clearly an offering down at the base of the shrine. A slightly slobbery hand puppet, with wild fur and off-kilter googly eyes that make a manic expression when combined with a segmented toothy mouth meant for hands to open and close to mimic speaking. Clearly a handmade offering. The wolf opens its maw, tongue lolling out, and a voice comes out -

[say]“I heard you like tricks and masks - that’s all I really know because my dad doesn't like - uh, is a Safrin guy. He wouldn’t love me visiting you before her.”[/say] The correction is graceless, but mischief creeps back in as if she hadn’t almost just painted a target on her dad. [say]“Torchline has ears everywhere - so I’m being sneaky. Want to join me?”[/say] Eager humor shakes in a feminine voice, roughly beside the canine if you had particularly keen ears. The invisibility cloak she’s wearing is a temporarily purloined item from said father’s possession, but he doesn’t need to know she’s using it to visit the herald he disapproves of. [say]“If you do, it’s just a puppet and a wolf talking, right? And if you keep it, there’s no evidence!”[/say] Torchline is known for shady deals and black markets, so it’s only fitting she traveled here for this particular approach.

Ludo prayer for Soleil’s Level 3 item reward!

RE: What do sock puppets eat? Finger foods! - Ludo - 08-31-2024

[say]"Being sneaky is one of the best bits of being alive, sweetling."[/say]

Ludo's voice echoes all around the shrine, though it too, has decided to be invisible, since this is the game they are playing. Even so, the (somewhat moist) hand puppet does spring up, as if someone's hand has reached up through the ground to fill it, and when the herald speaks again, its through the wonky teeth and slanted, stitched mouth of the offering.

[say]"I think I will keep this. It is very beautiful."[/say] The puppet waves a hand up at the wolf, and a googly eye winks at the space next to it, where nothing at all is there, of course. [say]"You are of the cold and the ice, but you have come to see me here. I like that."[/say]

Oh. Well, clearly Soleil hadn’t thought this through very much, because she’s a little disappointed to realize she won’t actually see Ludo this way.

Practically vibrating, Soleil’s cheeks ache with the force of her grin as it strives to match the gaping, stitched maw of the puppet levitating before her. Er, Diana. Definitely in front of Diana.

[say]“Do you like it because you like the beach more than the tundra?”[/say] It’s hard not to fall prey to her excitement and play a very different game like Twenty Questions. Soleil had admittedly shot herself in the foot with trying to meet Dygra first. She must be practically geriatric as an Accepted meeting their first god at twenty-one. [say]“Or because Torchline is more fun? Or because more things die here?”[/say] Her fingers wiggle spookily beneath the cloak, but the sheet-ghost effect is nullified by the invisibility she’s already forgotten about. Until Diana clacks her teeth, making it clear the act of feigning an open mouth (a la Stitch being a record player for Lilo) is growing tiring.

[say]“Oh! Sorry! Um - I practiced this, lemme -”[/say] Soleil clears her throat hastily to squash her excitement, and intones gravely, [say]“oh Great Puppet, please grant me a quest. Let me heal anything I can see.”[/say] Pausing, the tone drops away to a mutter, clearly bored by her own fine print. [say]“Like Talyson’s distance dagger thing. Can it be like that?”[/say] With a little less torture, though Soleil thinks it’s only torturous for the courier because he’s a stick in the mud. She’d considered a rubberband gun or healing arrows, but the optics…her dad would go grey overnight if Soleil started shooting Halovians in the name of medicine.

[say]"It is less because I like the beach and more because I dislike the cold,"[/say] Lud-- er, the puppet informs 'Diana', its sock head turning this way and that as if to glance around for anyone listening in. How awful it would be if Torchline knew that it was not Ludo's favourite place, right? [say]"People die everywhere, but it is true that this region does have a lot of fun,"[/say] it adds, as if to make up for it. Fun for Mort's herald might mean something very different to another deity, though, so Sol ought to take that with a grain of salt.

Falling quiet to listen to the young woman and her grave plea to the definite god of sock puppets, the bit of fabric nods along with her, waiting for her to finish before speaking again. [say]"I am afraid you have come to rather the wrong god for that, sweetling,"[/say] it says. [say]"I kill - don't heal. What about a nice sword?"[/say]

RE: What do sock puppets eat? Finger foods! - Soleil - 09-20-2024

[say]"Interesting,”[/say] she gushes in an excited whisper. [say]“Is that why you don’t have many shrines there?”[/say] Diana snaps her maw again, clearly exasperated that Soleil is getting distracted with interviewing Ludo instead of following the plan. Sol makes an oop expressions - one that deepens at Ludo’s corrections.

[say]“Huh! I didn’t think of it that way!"[/say] Read: she didn't think about it at all. [say]"Everybody talks about having 'meaningful requests' and not 'wasting your time' and that makes it all seem very…heroic. And selfless.”[/say] Which Soleil really isn’t; she’d wanted a firework weapon from Dygra and failed, which is the only reason she'd changed tactics. Given she isn't really sure what Safrin does aside from look gorgeous and build armies of attractive men, Soleil hadn't gone much further than 'herald of death maybe doesn't want me making its job harder by killing more things, so what's the opposite?' before considering herself prepared. (Not because Brit craves shrine fumbles that roll the dice on Attuned or Abandoned)

[say]“I’m awful with swords and close combat,”[/say] she admits in a mumble, hating to appear lame in front of a literal god, [say]“but! How about bombs?”[/say] Deadly but versatile, surely that will appease everyone involved? [say]"Maybe even glue bombs, so I can stick people in place too - and kill things more easily with my spear."[/say] It might be capable of magical recall, but Soleil hides from Deimos' training sessions more than she actually goes, so her aim isn't exactly reliable when it comes to fulfilling Ludo's muder-wishes.

The sock puppet bobs its head enthusiastically - of course that is why it does not have any shrines out in Halo. Who would want to go there anyway?

As Soleil hums and haws and has her epiphanies about what kind of quest, if any, would be suitable between herself and Mort's herald, puppet!Ludo busies itself trying to clack its jaws back at Diana. Right up until she mentions bombs, of course, and it forgets that she's invisible to 'stare' right at the space where she isn't, mouth open wide.

[say]"That is a great idea,"[/say] it announces. [say]"Yes, let's make people sticky."[/say]

Soleil has received a quest from Ludo! She must:

1. Complete a thread investigating something sticky. (e.g. glue, quicksand, honey a stick etc.)
2. Complete a thread collecting the webbing from a Crystal Spider.
3. Complete a training thread focused on dodging.
4. Complete a thread making something explode.

Diana doesn't have the expression capability to look perturbed, but she makes it clear to Soleil through their bond as she sits perfectly still in front of Ludo's clattering plush teeth, attentive against her will. Perhaps ushering her airheaded companion toward a decision so that she might be spared the discomfort - or the growing primordial urge to sink her teeth into the puppet and shake it apart, because it looks awfully fun...

Soleil gets Ludo's focus back before chaos can unfold (which is likely a shame) and she meets the puppet's lopsided grin with a wicked one of her own. [say]"You've got it boss!"[/say] She bows sharply, flipflops briefly blinking into existence, though the pounding of her feet as she races back off the dock with Diana at her heels - laughing to herself to give an outlet to her excitement - makes it all a bit of a moot point. But she succeeded, and now nothing can stop her from absolutely crushing her first real quest.
