home in time for dinner - Ronin - 09-16-2024

[say]"I'm just saying - if you'd told me a year ago, after that first jaunt we took across to Starfall, that we'd have managed that so easily, I'd have taken you to Isla for a check-up."[/say] Grinning as he ducks in through the door of The Hanged Man, Ronin's fingers are laced with Remi's, the Knight giving his husband's hand a gentle squeeze as he leads them straight to a table to look out onto the beach. [say]"I know we should just count ourselves incredibly lucky and keep working, but I want at least one night to celebrate."[/say]

That, and given that he'd assumed that they wouldn't have made it back to Torchline (be that in one piece, or at all, or within twenty-four hours), Ronin hasn't really counted on getting anything in for dinner. Hence their jaunt our to their daughter's bar, and whatever someone is willing to serve him from the menu within it.

Slumping into a seat and stretching his arms above his head, causing his back to crackle deliciously, Ronin relaxes and pushes up the sleeves of his shirt; a loose, linen thing intended to do little more than cover him up, rather than any particular fashion statement. [say]"So with that in mind - what can I get you to drink, husband?"[/say]

RE: home in time for dinner - Remi - 09-16-2024

[say]'Through the power of friendship, Ronin, anything is possible.'[/say] The Bastion says sagely, closing his eyes and nodding wisely—before nearly tripping over his own feet. Gripping his husband's hand a touch more tightly and smiling wryly across his shoulder at the Knight, Remi chuckles under his breath before allowing himself to be led toward a table of his husband's choosing. [say]"I couldn't agree more."[/say] Near misses were no less cause for celebration than nearly dying; also they didn't have anything at home for dinner.

Opting to take the seat next to Ronin rather than sitting across from him, the Bastion bounces his eyebrows adoringly before glancing at the little chalkboard on their table which had the specials currently listed. Frowning a touch given he was the one who supplied the alcohol for nearly every item on the list, just as he's about to answer, he catches sight of his daughter returning from one of the back rooms with her dress badly askew. Just about to look away, the man who followed her out of said room has Remi sitting up, his shoulders stiffening. [say]"Is..."[/say] Blinking, he watches Jack grab his daughter's ass, flashing her a too-pleased smile that had the Bastion's blood going cold.

[say]"Ronin,"[/say] He hisses, elbowing Ronin to draw and draw the Knight's stare out of his own menu.

RE: home in time for dinner - Ronin - 09-16-2024

[say]"Ah, so that was our problem before,"[/say] Ronin says, keeping his husband's balance once he decides he no longer cares for it himself, until he is safely seated at the table with him. [say]"We just need to make sure we bring all of our friends with us each time, and apparently Mort will bless us with the ability to take down a dragon with nothing more than a shrug."[/say] He says we and us, because of course despite being the one to wield the black-bladed sword and to make that killing blow, Ronin will never take complete credit for it.

Stretching an arm casually around Remi's shoulders, partially because he wants to but also so he can peep at the menu with him. He's about to point out that the Bastion can still have favourites among the alcohol he brews (assuming that's what he's annoyed about when he says his name, anyway), when the elbow to his ribs has him actually looking up.

And looking intently, he might add.

[say]"Speaking of things that were different a year ago,"[/say] he mutters, almost under his breath, and already he's rising to his feet with the full intention of explaining to a certain smuggler where his hands do and do not belong.

RE: home in time for dinner - Remi - 09-18-2024

That Ronin still had the capacity to be humble after all he'd accomplished over the long years since they'd been in Caido had Remi's lips twitching into a smile that wasn't particularly wide, but deepened his dimples just the same. Warmth flooded outward from the places they touched as the Bastion rolled his eyes affectionately, his smile turning a touch wry. [say]"I think you're owed a bit of credit. You did wield that toothpick sword quite elegantly."[/say]

The amusement fell swiftly from Remi's features as his gaze hardened, eyes tracing the barely veiled satisfaction that practically dripped from his daughter and the man who was the same age as his own husband. Immediately rising and knocking the table in the process, the Bastion is more than happy to give Jack a brief demonstration of what would happen if he didn't heed Ronin's warning when Flora looked their way. Without so much as a hint of guilt, the Doubletake waved at them, calling, No need to get up! I'll come and see you in a sec!

[say]I'm sorry, what?[/say] Glancing at Ronin, his anger having been a touch cowed by surprise, Remi raised a brow.

RE: home in time for dinner - Ronin - 09-18-2024

With Mort's toothpick and any thought of food forgotten, not to mention both Taliesins on their feet, it's of little surprise that they've caught at least some attention, though Ronin hadn't been expecting to have it from the Doubletake itself. A soft growl rises in his throat, one that belongs more to an enormous, scaly reptile with sharp teeth, and he's still watching as Jack saunters back through the door both he and Flora had just recently exited.

[say]I don't know,[/say] he grumbles, slowly easing himself back into his seat and reaching out for Remi's hand, if not to guide him down as well then to at least give himself something to hold onto. [say]But I don't like it, and I definitely didn't encourage it.[/say] Granted, if he'd known putting the fear of the gods into Koa would have spooked Flora into the arms of Jack Barclay, he'd have spent all his time singing the boy's praises instead.

RE: home in time for dinner - Remi - 09-19-2024

Hardly having noticed that Ronin was no longer at his side such was his focus on Jack before he slipped back into the shadows, Remi glanced belatedly over his shoulder then down at his hand which had gripped Ronin's hard enough to turn his knuckles white. Hissing out an apology and immediately relaxing his fingers, the Bastion slumps down next to his husband, jaw still feathering unhappily.

[say]"I know she's old enough to do what she wants, but surely we can't allow that."[/say] Remi mutters under his breath, feeling as though the rug had just been pulled out from beneath him; perhaps even moreso than when pieces of the universe had fallen from the sky and a new war had begun right under their noses. [say]"I mean...I think he's the same age that we are."[/say] If not older, especially taking into account Flora's rapid aging as a child.

[say]"Right?"[/say] Turning toward Ronin, his eyebrows raised and softly furrowed, Remi frowns gently and give his head a small shake.

RE: home in time for dinner - Ronin - 09-22-2024

Remi has nothing to apologise for, and Ronin's wordless grumble and the soft squeeze of his fingers ought to say as much, the Knight's eyes flicking between the closed door and their daughter before his husband drags his attention back front and centre. (Or at his side, as it happens). [say]"Gods, please don't remind me of that,"[/say] he almost whines under his breath to hear the captain's age brought into it, Ronin snaking an arm around Remi and dragging him close as if that will stop him from getting back to his feet.

[say]"I... fuck, I don't know,"[/say] he mutters, glancing once more at Flora and nosing into Remi's curls as if that will hide the snarl that keeps threatening to curl his lip. [say]"He's got to be using her,"[/say] he says; no way in Caido would someone like Jack decide to be with Torchline's fucking Queen for purely emotional reasons. [say]"Do... Should we speak to her about it? Speak to him?"[/say]

RE: home in time for dinner - Remi - 09-22-2024

Tilting his head to the side and clenching his teeth again, the Bastion exhales a sharp breath as he shakes his head. The captain's age was a large part of what was so wrong with him slapping their daughter's ass, surely. Even were he one of Torchline's more upstanding citizens Remi would have a problem with an age gap that large, but to add on everything else he knew about the man on top of it?

Lacing his fingers through Ronin's and holding his husband's hand in his lap like some cherished artifact, Remi watches as Flora flits about the bar seemingly entirely unphased by what she no doubt had to know that her parents saw. [say]"I.."[/say] Not knowing which was worse—Jack using Flora for her political connections or just for her body—the Bastion lifted his chin and swallowed, eyeing the ceiling. [say]"Both, maybe? Though...I don't know if the same speech you gave to Koa is going to work on a man like Jack."[/say] He murmurs, tilting his head back down to press an uneasy kiss against the side of his husband's head.

[say]"I could talk to him, and you can talk to her..?'[/say] In the interest of not threading with ourselves, although lol it might be kind of funny.

RE: home in time for dinner - Ronin - 09-22-2024

[say]"The speech I had planned involved very few words, in fairness,"[/say] Ronin mutters, his eyes on Flora as she swans about without a care, even if his tone promises all kinds of violence. Finally tearing his gaze away only as Remi offers him a kiss, the Knight shivers away whatever oil slick feeling has settled on his skin after having witnessed the captain with their daughter, and thank the gods that it isn't Leafchange, is all he can think.

[say]"Alright. I... yeah, I think I could manage it. You're going to talk to him, huh?"[/say] He raises his eyebrows disbelievingly, though to be honest, Ronin thinks Remi actually has the easier conversation to navigate. If he gets too frustrated he can just kill Jack, after all. Right? Right. [say]"Let's eat first though? Last thing I need is to go into any of this hangry."[/say]

RE: home in time for dinner - Remi - 09-22-2024

[say]"Oh? You already had one planned for the possibility that our daughter would decide to date a murdering pirate?"[/say] Sighing heavily, were it not for the way Ronin intentionally tried to release himself from the dark grip of planning the murder of Flora's ... well, whatever Jack was to her, Remi likely would not have been able to do the same.

Glancing down at the menu between them and frowning, the Bastion sighs and shakes his head. [say]"I'll go order us drinks. You ... I'll have whatever you're having."[/say] Nothing sounded good at the moment which meant he'd likely just pick at whatever was brought to him. If nothing else, if he ordered the same thing as his husband, at least Ronin could have it as leftovers.

Rising and heading toward the bar where Flora promised she'd come over to chat just as soon as she could, Remi nodded stiffly before returning not with the drinks he'd ordered, but with two new creations that Flora had wanted their opinions on. Slouching back down, Remi places the cocktails before his husband with a wince. One had a rim loaded with sugar and whose ingredients had apparently been chosen specifically so that they wouldn't mix with one another, leaving distinct layers of flavour. The other was the no-colour of too much alcohol and was served with a wedge of lemon. [say]"Err...Flora wants our thoughts."[/say] He mumbles by way of explanation, before nodding at the drinks and giving Ronin first dibs.

RE: home in time for dinner - Ronin - 09-22-2024

[say]"Sure I did. I wrote it on my knuckles. On both hands, to be safe,"[/say] Ronin quips back without even having to think about it, only to grumble and slouch back once Remi is on his feet to go and order them some drinks. Whatever the Knight is having will turn out to be some kind of chowder served alongside a grilled cheese, and it was that or a salad, so in his opinion he's chosen the lesser of two evils. Either way, he feels as though what he's ordered in no way pairs with the monstrosities Remi brings back to the table.

[say]"Wh... Oh. Right, okay."[/say] Wrinkling his nose a touch and reaching out, he slides the plain, more alcoholic looking drink towards him, leaving the colourful monstrosity for his husband to contend with. Squeezing the lemon into the drink in a gesture that seems almost hopeful, Ronin shoots it back without a thought, only for white scales to shiver out across his neck and shoulders. [say]"It's strong,"[/say] he wheezes, unsurprisingly. [say]"How's yours?"[/say]

RE: home in time for dinner - Remi - 09-22-2024

[say]"Mm, clever. Harder to lose it, that way."[/say] Remi hums darkly, giving his husband's shoulder an affectionate squeeze before disappearing to the bar.

It's true, nothing pairs with what Remi sets down before them aside from bad decisions and alcohol poisoning. Clearly, these drinks are meant for a much younger audience who want all the perks of getting immediately drunk without dealing with the taste. Raising a brow, not knowing if Ronin has offered him the better or worse option, based on the Knight's expression after trying his, Remi is all the more uncertain as he lifts the colourful monstrosity and sniffs at it.

[say]"Smells like lemons."[/say] He says under his breath, though given the neon-yellow of the first thing, that isn't all that surprising. Sipping it slowly as if trying to do Flora the courtesy of drinking the cocktail presumably as it was meant to be, he made it only about halfway before nearly gagging and having to set it down. [say]"It's—"[/say] Pressing the back of his hand against his lips as if to stop the colours from making a reappearance, he pulls a face and gives his head a shake.

[say]"Fuck me, that's sour."[/say]

RE: home in time for dinner - Ronin - 09-22-2024

Wondering whether sucking on whatever's left of the lemon wedge will make anything like a difference, Ronin glances across at his husband with a hard sigh that puffs out his cheeks and a nod that communicates little more than godspeed. And the colourful cocktail doesn't disappoint(?) depending on what Remi was expecting, the Knight gripping his knee and giving it a warm squeeze, tilting his head at the cocktail.

[say]"That'll be the lemons,"[/say] he assumes, his voice still roughened by the potency of the cocktail, and despite his demigodly constitution, the Knight can already feel his chest warming and his body feeling loose from the hit of it. [say]"Did the sugar rim not make any difference?"[/say] He tries for a chuckle that turns into a clearing of his throat. [say]"Maybe Flora is trying to make cocktails that will get us drunk, even if it's only for a few minutes at a time."[/say]

RE: home in time for dinner - Remi - 09-22-2024

[say]"Y'know, I doubt this has been anywhere near an actual lemon."[/say] He splutters once he's able, finding a good amount of saliva pooling on his tongue. Glancing at the table and very nearly wiping at his tongue with a napkin, instead Remi just glances at Ronin with a painful smile and laughs. [say]"Maybe."[/say] As it turns out Flora was trying to see if she could make a drink with the liquor often left over in unequal amounts. These "waste-not cocktails" were meant to do just that, though if a pair of demigods couldn't handle them, Remi doubted if anyone could.

Then again, he didn't really have a good handle on the youth these days, least of all his own.

[say]"I would say that was much worse than anything we encountered today."[/say] Allowing his grin to turn entirely mischievous, Remi leans back in his seat, slouching against his husband and shoving the remainder of his cocktail all the way across the table. [say]"I'm sure it won't always go that way...but gods, even if we get lucky like that just once or twice more, it could really turn the tides."[/say]
