on some it looks like still waters - Lena - 12-08-2024

The Caretaker took a quick intake of breath along the surface, before joining Sohalia back down along the aptly named Spiral Marketplace. It was appropriate and sensible – the shape reminding her of many shells sold in various shops amongst Torchline, stories upon stories of shops, merchants, and kiosks, with a whole semblance of wares to catch the eye. There was space enough for them to swim through, perusing and shopping, and it was delightful to think they could even do so, as animals, milling about with the rest.

[say]Ooh, look at this![/say] she eyed excitedly, waving a flipper over to her swordfish friend. Though they likely wouldn’t be able to purchase anything, given the lack of funds and ways to contribute to the exchanging of goods regardless, it was still fun to window shop. She used her pink snout to point out a gorgeous and glassy set of windchimes, or maybe they were ‘wave’ chimes, decorated in an abundance of cool hues and blends.

The Luminary continued on, circling briefly as she waited for Lena to rise to the surface for a breath of fresh air, still marveling at her own ability to breath underwater. It was such a strange sensation, to not need air, but as natural as, well, breathing when she was in this form.

Their next destination was the Spiral Marketplace, which Soh had to swim sideways in the water to get a good look at, flipping herself in a spiral of her own to better take it all in. They joined the crowds milling about, and Soh nearly missed the shop that Lena pointed out. The swordfish turned back to slowly swim by, rejoining her friend and ooing and ahing over the Attuned bond. [say]So pretty![/say] she exclaimed. [say]I wish we could buy things, but I suppose the shopkeepers wouldn't be too happy about an IOU.[/say]

[say]Probably not[/say], and she gave a dolphin grin in response. [say]Maybe next time we can figure out how to buy things[/say] - or plan it out a bit more thoroughly. Granting a light bout of laughter through the bond, she manuevered around, slowly drifting along, not wanting to miss anything. With one last glance towards those beautiful wave chimes, wondering if she’d be able to find something similar or make, craft, it on her own, she meandered towards another more open area of a shop.

[say]Ooh, food[/say] she murmured, snout lifting to catch certain scents – but not recognizing any. [say]What do you think these are?[/say]

[say]Shame,[/say] Soh said wistfully. [say]Those are pretty.[/say] But her pining was short-lived, for there was more to see in the marketplace, and with a swish of her tail, she and Lena were off and away once more. She joined her friend's laughter with a silent giggle of her own, and then there was the distraction of food. Her swordfish form loved fish and squid, though from her research she knew that they weren't particularly picky creatures. Sohalia herself wasn't keen on trying a squid, but during her time in Torchline, she'd become particularly fond of certain types of fish.

Not that she could discern what was what in the open shop. Despite her keen eyesight (and weirdly heated eyes), there was nothing about the platters of food to indicate their origin. Spying something, at least, that she recognized, she called out, [say]Is that an octopus?[/say] She knew it was considered a delicacy, but she wasn't sure how she felt about it all the same.

[say]Maybe[/say], she hummed, struggling to get a closer look with her size and speed, and ended up meandering and coasting by enough times that the merchant clearly thought she was about to steal and snag something – immediately covering their wares with a dirty look.

[say]I would hate to make us feel unwelcome again[/say], uttered with a grimace through the bond. Opting not to be idle and obnoxious around the next shop, she gave a glimmer of a look, before longingly glancing at another set either pearl-embedded or opal-esque earrings. [say]Window shopping is difficult[/say] came with more warm laughter, but the truth and heart of it.

Sohalia couldn't help but giggle at the merchant's hurried covering of wares, trying and failing to smother her laughter as Lena grimaced through the bond. [say]Sorry,[/say] she said. [say]But what else can you do but laugh?[/say] If she were a merchant selling what appeared to be various fish and sea creatures for consumption, she had to admit that she'd probably be wary of an encantado and a swordfish cruising by, too.

[say]Are there other ways to visit this place than shifting?[/say] Soh asked as they passed another merchant who was selling jewelry. [say]Perhaps we'd have better luck as humans.[/say] At least the merchants wouldn't think they were there to steal away their hard-caught wares!

She supposed Sohalia was right, as they moved along; but she’d keep in the back of her mind for the future, wondering if there were better ways to communicate (or in their case, purchase some beautiful wares they wouldn’t have found anywhere else). [say]I know some use the manta crystals[/say], off of manta rays themselves – likely as a necklace of some kind, pressed against their throat to breathe amidst the waves. [say]But then you would lack the communication…[/say] unless of course they had Attuned adornments.

All in all, a bit of a pickle – but there were other things to do and see!

Nudging in the direction of what appeared to be a garden, her inquiry and curiosity soon followed. [say]Want to head that way next?[/say]

Sohalia hummed thoughtfully through the bond. It was indeed a conundrum to consider, but one for another time. For now, Soh was happy to flash through the clear seas and investigate more and more of the underwater world that had previously been forbidden to her.

Lena pointed out a new segment of the area that appeared to be an underwater garden, and Soh followed eagerly. [say]It's so different![/say] she exclaimed, admiring the way the sunlight filtered down onto the coral and anemones dotting the landscape, arranged much like a surface garden so that they had the most impact. Soh was most interested in a little segment of seagrass dotted with colorful coral arrangements set off in a corner of the garden, and she circled it several times before continuing on.

Lena was much the same in her excitement; having created multiple herb gardens, both at her home and in the Celestine, she was ever intrigued to see what sort of underwater concoctions filled the soil fathoms below. She wasn’t disappointed either, and the entire fanciful whim would stir between the Attuned bond with ebullience and excitement. [say]And lovely! I wish I could ask them what they use for mending properties down here…[/say] for she presumed they must; in between healing incanttions and the like.

There seemed to be a greater section just further out, and her intrigue couldn’t quite be sated until they ventured towards that expanse too. [say]Want to see what’s over there?[/say] Her snout pointed in the direction of statues in the distance; grey monolithic things, unaware of what they’d find around the bend.
