preparations - Liam - 03-24-2025 In the center of Sidhe Village was a large square that had, in the past, been used for various festivals. This season, Liam and Maea had determined that it should be used again. The morning was pleasant: warm, but not too hot, with a cool breeze that felt divine as it caressed Liam’s cheeks. He stood in the center of the square, directing the few Fae that he had managed to work out deals with. There were stalls to set up, decorations to prepare, and even a stage to build - all in preparation for Fiat Lux, the celebration of spring. They’d posted a notice in the village, hoping that others might want to enjoy the season as well. Now it just remained to be seen if anyone would join them in setting things up. —- This is an open PQ for Fiat Lux preparation! Post your characters arriving and we’ll get started! 1. Liam 2. Maea 3. Open RE: preparations - Maea - 03-24-2025 Busying her hands with braiding back the long hair over her shoulder, Maea walked up to Liam. Her gaze was on the fae as they began easing into activity, slowly at first though with growing enthusiasm, as though reminded of older traditions that had come to seem unimportant of late. [say]"Where should we start?"[/say] she murmured, glancing up at her friend. There was much activity to organize, and while she might be able to figure something out, Liam was the veteran in this village. His rapport with the fae was better by far, given the years he had spent here. Waiting to see if anyone else would come to join, she tied off the braid and tucked her hands into the pockets of her coat, shifting her weight from toe to heel and back again, itching to get herself involved. RE: preparations - Lyra - 03-28-2025 It's a pleasant morning, and Lyra has already explored the Bodega and found the most adorable little cafe serving pastries and tea. She's always been an early riser, and that hasn't changed even since she's been on vacation. She wanders now through the village, nibbling on a mixed berry hand pie doused with powdered sugar, and when she sees a familiar face, she wanders over to say hello. [say]"Maea, hi!"[/say] she says, glancing over at the man that her friend stood beside. [say]"I hope I'm not interrupting anything. I just wanted to say hello!"[/say] Then she takes in their surroundings: the Fae bustling about, piles of supplies strewn everywhere, and the way Maea and the stranger seem to be waiting for something. [say]"What's going on?"[/say] Lyra asks, curious and willing to assist with whatever it is they're doing. RE: preparations - Liam - 03-28-2025 Maea was, unsurprisingly, the first to appear, and Liam smiled at her approach, his sharp gaze softening as it lit on her face. [say]"Good morning,"[/say] he said, smothering a laugh at her no-nonsense question without even a hello. It didn't bother him, really - he was as eager to get started as she was, really. He was just about to give some semblance of instructions when another person appeared. She had dark curls and brilliant blue eyes, and she greeted Maea as a friend. Well, any friend of hers was a friend of his, so Liam offered a hand. [say]"No, you're not interrupting. I'm Liam. We were just setting up for a Fiat Lux festival."[/say] Once introductions had been made and both women were ready, Liam gestured around them. [say]"The Fae are working on most of the stalls, but there are a few who have requested help. There's also decorations to put up, and a stage to build for music. I think we should start with the stage; then we can center the rest of the festival around it."[/say] He looked to Maea for her agreement and approval before they got started, and once he had some indication of her thoughts, he led the way over to the supplies. --- Round 1! Let's start with the stage. Grab some wood and tools and start building! RE: preparations - Maea - 03-29-2025 [say]"Oh - good morning."[/say] A faint blush crept into her face upon realizing she'd skipped the courtesies altogether. Something about seeing Liam as often as she had made the days blur together; it rarely felt like they were truly apart for any real amount of time. 'Good night' and 'Good morning' became obvious things, a wish to underline all interaction – but, really, she should probably try to say the actual words too. Saved from embarrassment by a familiar face, Maea lit up as she spotted Lyra. [say]"Hi! You're up early - it's nice to see you."[/say] Leaving it to Liam to explain what they were up to, she eyed the pastry in Lyra's hand with every intention of getting one for herself once they were done. Having no objections to Liam's plan of action she gave him a thumbs up, already heading for the supply pile to arm herself with a hammer and nails. [say]"Want to help?"[/say] she offered Lyra; [say]"It'll be quick work with an extra pair of hands."[/say] No master builder was Maea, but she had helped with enough construction work to be at least competent with the hammer. Once they had agreed on the size of the stage and she knew what to do, the petite Ancient set to work, filling the air with a sound of unbridled productivity. ----- Maea takes up a hammer and nails and begins building RE: preparations - Lyra - 03-29-2025 Maea laughs politely. [say]"I'm always up early,"[/say] she admits. [say]"Force of habit."[/say] First it had been the rules of the orphanage where she grew up, then a portion of her training in search and rescue, and now it just seems silly to waste daylight hours when she can get so much done. [say]"Sure, I'm happy to help!"[/say] she adds after Maea's invitation, offering a friendly smile to Liam as she goes to gather supplies. Once decisions are made regarding the size and placement of the stage, Lyra gathers up a hammer and pockets some nails. She follows Maea over to the wood pile and selects one large plank at a time, carrying it over to the frame of the stage and beginning to hammer pieces into place. It's not particularly exciting work, but it's mindless, and Lyra finds herself going over the many things she hopes to do in the Greatwood before heading home in her mind. --- Lyra helps build! RE: preparations - Liam - 03-30-2025 Liam followed the two women as they gathered supplies, then began to work on a section of the stage. It wasn't a particularly large dais, but it would serve their purposes and be fairly easy to tear down after. Liam, like the others, was not a particularly skilled woodworker, but he'd gathered enough over the years to be able to do a simple project like this, and with the three of them working in tandem, it wasn't long before the little stage took shape beneath their ministrations. Once he'd deemed the stage complete, Liam called the two women back over to where they'd started. [say]"Great!"[/say] he said. [say]"Now we can focus on the stalls. Once we've got that sorted, we can look at decorations."[/say] Gesturing towards the vendors surrounding them, Liam ditched his hammer and nails and started towards one of the struggling merchants. --- Round 2! Let's help the vendors! 1. One vendor needs help unloading boxes from his cart. 2. One vendor needs help laying out her wares (your choice what they are). 3. One vendor is trying to set up a tent and failing miserably. RE: preparations - Maea - 03-30-2025 [say]"Well, that was satisfying,"[/say] Maea concluded as she stepped back to get a good look at the stage. It wasn't the prettiest construction she'd ever seen but it looked solid and that was the important part. Plus, after taking out pent up frustrations on the nails with all that banging about, she felt really good. Looking over the next set of tasks, she decided to challenge herself. With the promise of practicing her diplomacy fresh in mind, Maea went to help the vendor that struggled with a tent and politely offered to help. Looking over the pieces properly she figured out which order to assemble them in, and lent her hands in supporting posts and pulling on lines until the structure looked reasonably stable. ----- Maea helps with task 3, setting up the tent RE: preparations - Lyra - 04-05-2025 The stage, when they finish, is not, perhaps, the most stunning construction that Lyra has ever seen; but somehow the rough-hewn boards seem fitting for the Greatwood, and it is nothing if not sturdy. With a smile, Lyra regroups with the others. [say]"Very,"[/say] she agrees with Maea, then places her hammer and nails back with the other tools and goes to help one of the vendors. The woman makes her way over to the vendor laying out her wares and strikes up an easy conversation, asking about the goods as they begin to arrange them artfully on the shelves of the stall. The merchant is selling jewelry, and some of it is actually quite charming; Lyra makes a note to return and make a purchase at this Fiat Lux festival. In the meantime, though, she sets up displays and mannequins, places necklaces and bracelets on display, and all sorts of other goods as the time ticks by. --- Lyra assists with #2! RE: preparations - Liam - 04-12-2025 With two of the vendors now being assisted, that left Liam to go help unload the last merchant's cart. It was simple enough work, but physically demanding; some of the boxes were heavier than they'd first appeared. Still, there weren't very many of them, so as Maea finished with her task and Lyra with hers, Liam found himself emptying the last of the boxes and rejoining the two women by the stage. With the stage complete and the vendors helped, that left decorations to handle. Liam gestured towards a few stacked crates. One held candles, which could be placed around the square; another held bunting to be hung. The candles would be simple enough, but the bunting was more of a two-person job. [say]"One of us can take the candles, and the other two can tackle the banners,"[/say] Liam suggested. [say]"There's a ladder over there, and tools here. Ladies first."[/say] --- Round 3! Decoration time! 1. One person for candles 2. Two people for bunting RE: preparations - Maea - 04-15-2025 Satisfied with the tent going up and being secured against wind and careless people, Maea returned to her friends. There was still work to do, and she considered the alternatives as Liam laid them out for selection. And perhaps to no one's surprise Maea cheerfully sauntered off with the ladder and an armful of bunting, humming under breath while she eyed the trees and stalls for good places to tie them up. Setting up the ladder against a stately pine, she tested the stability and judged it to be adequate - not too tippy - and began to scale up the steps, swift and agile as a squirrel and about as fond of high places. It was hard to say when she'd gained a taste for altitude. Perhaps it had always been there, in the girl who always looked to the sky and longed for wings to take her far away. It certainly bloomed in full now, and came in handy for jobs that involved ladders and balancing. Maea chooses task 2 ~ RE: preparations - Lyra - 04-18-2025 With the vendors happily going about their business, Lyra returns to Liam and Maea, listening to the next set of instructions. While Maea takes a ladder and some bunting, Lyra selects some candles and begins setting them around the square. It's slow work, with only one person to do it, and she has to be careful about where she sets them. They are, after all, a fire hazard. In fact, Lyra returns to Liam with her arms still full of candles, flagging him down as he goes about helping Maea with the bunting. [say]"What about lanterns?"[/say] she asks, tilting her head to one side curiously. [say]"Wouldn't that be safer than bare candles?"[/say] --- Lyra selects candles, then suggests that they find lanterns to use instead. RE: preparations - Liam - 04-18-2025 Lyra selected the candles, leaving Liam to assist Maea with the bunting. He followed her over to a large pine, where she set a ladder and climbed up. The soldier stood at the bottom, content to pass bunting up to her as she needed it. He was not what one might call a creative soul; actually deciding where to place the fabric was a bit outside of his comfort zone. No, he was more than happy to be a helper for this particular task. Lyra approached as they worked to suggest lanterns rather than candles, and Liam jumped at the suggestion. [say]"That's a great idea,"[/say] he said, looking around. [say]"I think there are some just over there. There won't be as many as if we just used candles, but you're right - it's probably safer."[/say] With that in mind, and Lyra set to return to her task, the trio worked into the afternoon on decorating the village square just so. By the time the sun began to sink beneath the trees, they had gotten everything sorted, and Liam thought they'd done rather well with the limited supplies they had available. When they next reconvened, the only remaining task was to clean up the remaining supplies and pack them away. There was a pile of wood from the stage, some remaining candles, and some scraps of fabric that could probably be used by someone more capable with their sewing than Liam. [say]"Everything looks great!"[/say] he told the women with a warm smile. [say]"Now let's just clean up, and then we can grab some dinner on me."[/say] --- Round 4! Cleanup time! 1. Wood pile needs to be moved and/or burned 2. Extra candles need to be packed away 3. Extra bunting needs to be bundled up for other uses RE: preparations - Maea - 04-20-2025 If she was particularly happy that Liam had chosen to come and help her, Maea didn't say anything about it. She did smile a lot though, enjoying the simple task far more than it really warranted. Perhaps they were a bit too effective; before she even realised it the bunting was in place and the square had taken on a festive look in honor of the season. [say]"Thank you,"[/say] Maea murmured to Liam as she descended the ladder. [say]"I'll clean up here, if you want to help elsewhere."[/say] It was a quick task, to fold up the cloth and stow it back into baskets for another project. If needed she would pause for a moment to light the wood pile on fire, but otherwise she focused on her own work until it was done. It was all coming along nicely. Maybe it wouldn't be the grandest festival ever held, but the fae looked pleased that it was happening at all, and Maea enjoyed the work and the company. This was what she loved; joining together with friends to accomplish a task, however small and insignificant it may seem. Maea packs up the bunting and can help set the wood pile on fire if needed. |
