If nothing remains - Maea - 05-08-2025 The world was a noisy place. Under the dazzling heat of the sun, cicadas and grasshoppers competed for the most incessant chirrups, their serenade punctuated by calls and trills from birds, beasts and natural formations. Beneath the surface, the murmur of water against her ears and the steady beat of her own heart was all she could hear. A cloud manta crystal tied flush against her neck allowed Maea to linger in the silence, half asleep where she drifted through the dark. Meant as a challenge to overcome memories of drowning, at first this watery embrace had left her anxious and restless. As time passed and fears were proven untrustworthy guides, relaxation set in and her limbs floated off without intent or care for what they looked like. Images and memories flashed past her inner vision, reflecting in half closed eyes like light filtered through the water. The faces of people, events, gods and spirits, hopes and dreams and dashed promises all mingled in a jumbled mess. And like the bubbles of oxygen that slowly rose towards the surface, so all thought bubbled up in her mind, and slipped away. If not as intentional as meditation, the result came close enough. Peace. That rare and elusive state of mind. It enveloped her now, so that mind and body experienced a moment of rest that was a long time in the coming. Relishing the clarity it granted her, Maea only languidly stirred occasionally, past forests of kelp, schools of fish and the shadowed shapes of rubble on the bottom below. When it brought her to the mouth of a cave, she reached for the mouth and pulled herself close enough to poke her head inside, curious about what might be hidden within. |
