is this another death by misadventure? - Alys - 06-11-2025

Alys and Sohalia wandered the Greatwood for a time. Sometimes, it felt like they were making headway; others, the trees warped and twisted around them, spitting them out in an entirely new direction. The seer knew better by now than to expect the forest to help them, but she couldn't help but hope all the same that maybe the woods knew better than they where to find a rose.

And when they got turned around and ended up in Ludo's Woods? Well, then Alys couldn't help the small smile that turned up her lips.

[say]"This is where I got Sascha back,"[/say] she told the Luminary, pride and affection in her voice. As if on cue, the little ursur grunted and raced towards the shrine set up amongst the trees. Alys paused, pressing a hand to the shrine, before moving along. [say]"Mort brought her back to me - or she chose to come back, anyway. I'm not entirely clear on the details."[/say]

Sohalia wandered alongside Alys and Sascha, Tarak flitting here and there above. The griffin wasn't having any more luck than the rest of them hunting roses, and he didn't dare stray too far when the trees liked to change their paths. The Luminary watched her companion with a wry sort of affection. She and Tarak didn't seem to have the same kind of bond that Alys and Sascha shared - which was fine, of course. Soh supposed that every companion, and every bond, were different in their own ways.

[say]"I'm glad you were able to get her back, however it happened,"[/say] Soh said, meaning every word as she walked through the woods. She paused at the shrine herself, if only out of respect; then she was moving on, hunting for a glimmer of gold amongst the darkness of the forest.

[say]"Me too,"[/say] Alys murmured, watching her companion with affection. The little ursur trundled along with them, never straying too far, but managing to aid in their search all the same. Somewhere above, Tarak flitted around; Sascha looked up at him every now and then, as though wishing they could play - and then she returned to her hunt, just as determined as her bonded to find a rose and save Tal.

Leaving the shrine behind them, the four of them continued deeper into Ludo's Wood. [say]"Mort used to intimidate me, but not anymore,"[/say] the seer said. [say]"He's so kind, and gentle, and... just genuinely good. I think so many people are afraid of death, but now I see the difference between fearing it and just not being ready for it."[/say]

Tarak screeched, then descended to land upon Sohalia's shoulder. He settled there to preen his feathers, drawing a snort from his bonded. Soh reached up to tug gently at his chest feathers, and the little griffin grumbled beneath his breath at the audacity.

Alys's musings on death had Soh blinking with surprise. She'd never really thought about it before, but she supposed the seer was right - there was a difference between fear and just not being ready to go. For Soh's part, she rather thought there was an element of both. [say]"It sounds like a wonderful experience,"[/say] she said warmly, despite her misgivings, because who was she to say how Alys should feel?

Orbs of light beckon and call from the darkened angles and shadows of trees. Were those whispers of your friends? Family? Fallen allies?

Was that a scream? Could they be in trouble?

Is it all in your head? Just your imagination?

Or something else altogether – because what if it’s true?

You’ve encountered a Will-O-Wisp. This counts as a common creature encounter for the purposes of levelling, but does not count as a Random Event for levelling or MP. There will be no further admin/re intervention. If you choose to follow this creature, you do so at your own risk, however, just having it in this thread is enough to satisfy your levelling requirements.

Will-O-Wisps (common): Glowing orbs of light that dance and weave between the branches, despite their usefulness, these creatures are not to be trusted. Mischievous and loyal to no one, they will lead travellers astray at a moment's notice.

Alys might have discussed further, but just then, a glowing orb of light appeared, dancing and weaving between the branches of the Greatwood. Whispers surrounded the women, calling and enticing and entrancing. Sascha pressed close to Alys's legs, her hackles raised. The seer wasn't sure what the little ursur heard in the wisp's calls, but whatever it was, it had her spooked.

[say]"It's okay,"[/say] she murmured, reaching down to rub a hand over Sascha's fur. To Sohalia, Alys added, [say]"Come on, let's go this way..."[/say] And eventually, they left the wisp behind.
