Summer days drifting away - Maea - 06-21-2025

Sunlit days followed one after the other like pearls strung into a necklace. Seemingly perfect, hot and filled with all the verdant marvels an enchanted forest could offer. As the season passed, flowers turned to fruits and the drone of insects shifted in tibre, away from the high pitched keen of mosquitoes into the insistent string of cicadas. By the waters edge, a breeze kept the air fresh despite the high humidity and in the shade beneath a pop-up stall's striped marquee, the shaved ice in her bowl kept mysteriously refilling itself, thereby staving off any longings for a swim.
A book lay page down on the table before her, but Maea hadn't touched it for a long while. She might look serene, in her light sundress and with the hair tied up into a high ponytail, but the way her tail kept twitching suggested that the unfocused gaze and chin rested upon a palm hid a deep restlessness.

No wonder, really. It was rough to sit around and pretend to contemplate a significant life choice when all she wanted to be doing was overturn every stall and crate in the Bodega, just in case a rose decided to sprout. It wouldn't do to seem too eager about it, though. That might alarm Liam, make him think she wasn't on the verge of accepting his 'invitation' - drive him away, to a place where reaching him would be beyond difficult. So, here she was. Idling away precious moments like she had all the time in the world, like she was just another sun-loving citizen basking in the height of Longheat - pretending like summer would last forever, and pretending to love every second of it.

RE: Summer days drifting away - Nova - 06-21-2025

It should come as no surprise to anyone that Nova has found herself wandering into random places again. Her mom's warning, along with her brother's, and the recent 'Family' events do have her exercising some caution, but only in the way that she has her magic buzzing even more on the surface, her darting eyes scanning more than just the pretty colors and sparkling trinkets, her ears listening for more than music and laughter. It's not anything beyond a light brushing of consciousness along her usually chaotic and naive delight with her surroundings.

Maybe that's why she spotted the pale Ancient sitting amongst the vibrant awnings when her attentions might have otherwise been snagged by the unique design that overlays the fabric. Her face brightened, the curling teal strands of her hair bouncing as she rushed through the crowd of people, waving her arm. [say]"Oooh! Hi Maea! What are you doing out here? And where did you get that shaved ice?!"[/say] She did a spin through the people, her white pineapple stitched dress flaring with the movement while her eyes searched for the source of the sweet treat.

Hearing her name trumpeted into the brightness of the day pulled the petite woman out of her glum musings. Like a prayer answered, chaos descended upon her in the form of glittering magic and obnoxious clothes, and with a smile of something close to relief, Maea pointed out the stall for Nova before she spun her way into someone's lap. [say]"Hey starling. I'm 'enjoying the season',"[/say] she said, painting citation marks with her fingers and a roll of her eyes. [say]"Distract me, please. It's dreadfully boring."[/say]

Pushing out a chair next to her for Nova to take a seat, Maea patted the back of it before returning to her own bowl. The syrup was nearly gone, the flaky ice on the verge of melting, yet she couldn't be bothered to get up and pay for yet another refill. [say]"What brings you to these parts?"[/say] she wondered idly. [say]"Avoiding work?"[/say]

RE: Summer days drifting away - Nova - 06-29-2025

Like a shooting star or a hummingbird or a lunging cat, Nova sprung on the stall, securing and paying for her rainbow shaved ice in record time and with considerable amounts of sparkles. She was twirling and spinning through the crowd to claim a seat before Maea had even finished rolling her eyes. Without missing a beat (or taking a breath), she let out a giggle that suggested she knew exactly what was missing.

[say]"That's because you're not wearing enough glitter! Do you want some of mine?"[/say] She manifested a vial of shimmering silver glitter out of seemingly nowhere, sticking her arm straight out for Maea to take as she inhaled a large bite of her ice cone.

Her head bobbed side to side as she indulged in the sweet treat, humming and completely uncaring of any possible brain freezes. [say]"Kind of! I've been trying to work on my flying. It's harder to do with six wings than you might think."[/say] Sometimes it was hard to remember that not everyone knew her well enough (or had the handy ability) to read her mind, so she didn't elaborate on the new Dreambird shift, just offering Maea a bright smile.

Lifting her shaved ice, Nova beamed, the stars on her cheeks stretching with the expression. [say]"This is delicious!"[/say] Her words were immediately supported by another large bite, her feet swinging absently beneath the table.

Maea accepted the vial of glitter and admired the way it sparkled in the sunlight. [say]"It's pretty. Not sure I know how to use it, though... where should I put it?"[/say] She knew better than to shoot down the idea, because saying no to Nova was difficult and experience told her that she'd be caving to pressure regardless of her own intent. Besides, what if the girl was right? A glance down at her plain white linen dress suggested there was indeed potential for sprucing it up - and just because it wasn't something she usually did, didn't mean she shouldn't try it.

[say]"Did I know you can fly?"[/say] she smiled, as the girl came to sit down with her own cold treat in hand. [say]"If you want to practice, I could keep you company. Might be a nice change of pace - relaxing is fine and all, but I don't seem to be cut out for it."[/say] At least not the kind where you simply sit around and do nothing. While less prone to brooding these days, it was still a bad habit of hers that she would be more than happy to shake. Especially if it meant spending time with Nova.

Maea should have expected the answer she got, Nova's arms thrown out for added emphasis. [say]"Anywhere! Everywhere! Your hair, cheeks, clothes, nails! Glitter goes with everything, so it doesn't matter!"[/say] Giggling, she took another large bite of her rainbow shaved ice, momentarily thinking about how much better it would be with glitter on it.

Then there was the topic of her flying, and Nova didn't hide the proud grin that spread across her face as she leaned forward. [say]"It's new! My Dreambird shift is so pretty!"[/say] At Maea's suggestion, she was beaming, the excitement causing a shimmer of light to float around the teal and blonde of her hair. [say]"Ooh! That'd be so fun! Let's go now!"[/say] She was already jumping from her seat, taking another chunk of colorful ice into her mouth.

Laughing at her exuberance, Maea obliged. Unscrewing the top, she dipped a finger into the glitter and transferred it to a strand of her hair. A quick swipe to either cheekbone used up the rest - though as she tried to dust the excess off her hands she realized that it only spread to both palms. Wonderful - now everything she touched would sparkle. [say]"Is this better?"[/say] She offered the jar back to the starchild.

Gratifying though it was to receive such an eager response to the suggestion, watching the young woman gulp down the ice made Maea wince a bit. How was she not getting brain freeze?
[say]"As soon as we've finished the snack,"[/say] she promised, [say]"so you can eat it in peace. I won't leave without you."[/say] Reclining in her chair, Maea took a perverse kind of pleasure in savoring the rest of her cone, knowing how it had to grate on Nova to go so slowly. In the end though, both treats ran out, and Maea finally rose from her seat. [say]"Alright then - let's go. Pick a direction, I'll follow."[/say]
