don't be salty - Isla - 11-02-2025

[say]"So if I read the notice board correctly, we need to collect seawater and distill it so we can collect the sea salt left behind,"[/say] Isla is saying as she pads down onto the beach with Melita, her hair swept up into a messy bun and a soft shawl tied around her shoulders to protect against the chill wind. Overhead the sky is moody and threatening rain at any moment, which also explains the large beach umbrella Isla has tucked under one arm.

[say]"The salt is what we want, so I figure if we collect water, I can boil it until the minerals are all that's left behind? I have a container for it."[/say] The salt, she means, for the glass jar she produces is large, yes, but it's not exactly fit for collecting gallons of seawater to distill. [say]"Hopefully the rain stays away until we're done, but if not, we can use the umbrella. Fingers crossed it doesn't get too bad."[/say]

It isn't monsoon level rainfall (not yet, ha), but Isla still isn't keen to get soaked if it isn't necessary.

RE: don't be salty - Melita - 11-02-2025

Melita was grateful to have Isla there, because in all retrospect, she wouldn’t have had the first idea on distilling sea salt from the water. At least, not without some way to commit violence. [say]“That’ll work,”[/say] she offered in response to the Ancient’s directions and thoughts, as if she had anything else to contribute but her chaotic glance towards the sea. She’d long since given up on her hair in the ensuing weather, and strolled lightly, letting the crimson curls billow around in their own hints of bedlam. [say]“I brought some jugs for the water,”[/say] tucked under her arm, extending one out to Isla if she wanted to grab too. [say]“It’s probably gonna take a lot, huh?” [/say]

Glancing upwards at the darkening, graying sky, she shrugged; not wholly bothered by the prospect of rain, but she could see where the permeating chill might not be good for Isla. [say]“All right, let’s get this going.”[/say] At which she rolled up her sleeves, knotted the ends of her dress, and proceeded towards the waves rolling in on the coast, wading in and dipping the jug into the tide.

RE: don't be salty - Isla - 11-04-2025

[say]"For enough salt to pour into the fountain to purify it? I imagine so,"[/say] Isla says with an apologetic smile, though she nods encouragingly towards the jugs that Melita has brought. [say]"I'd say if I pour a little at a time and boil it, though, we'll see results quite quickly."[/say] She hopes, anyway. Accepting the offered jug, Isla takes a little time on the beach to get set up while Melita wades into the shallows, putting up the umbrella and wedging it deep into the sand so they can angle themselves away from the worst of the wind.

With that done and the jar also half buried to prevent it tipping over, she pads over to join Mel in collecting up more seawater. [say]"I wish we were doing this in Longheat,"[/say] she says with a quiet laugh - the fire wouldn't bother her as an Ancient, but the sunshine and sea would likely be a lot more tolerable. [say]"How are things with you, anyway?"[/say]

RE: don't be salty - Melita - 11-05-2025

Isla seemed to have a level head on her shoulders; something Melita had yet to accomplish. She nodded at the plan though, which was far better than her barreling ahead, filling up as much as she could, and then crossing her fingers. [say]“Okay!”[/say] came on a more chipper tone with some procedures and methods in place, and as she waded in, she filled up one jug, listening to it bubble and murmur until the briny water was to the brim.

Glancing up from her task, she laughed, shrugging just the same. [say]“Still better than doing it in Halo. Or King’s End. Real muddy right now.”[/say] Placing one of the jugs aside and further into the dunes where the tide wouldn’t snag at it quite yet, she filled up another. [say]“Pretty good.”[/say] She had enhanced demi powers, she was figuring some portions of her life out…couldn’t complain, really. [say]“How about you?”[/say]

RE: don't be salty - Isla - 11-05-2025

[say]"Muddy?"[/say] Isla repeats with a soft laugh, also letting her jug submerge beneath the waves until bubbles stop streaming towards the surface. [say]"The bad weather must be all along the coast. I thought we had the worst of it. How are they managing out there?"[/say] Hefting her jug back onto the sand to get a head-start on distilling the salt, she can only give a wry grin of agreement at the idea of doing this - or anything, indeed - in Halo of all places.

Kneeling in the sand and invoking her scorch magic to begin working at the seawater, Isla can't hide the relief to be under the shelter of the umbrella and with flames against her fingers to keep her warm. [say]"Not bad,"[/say] she agrees with Mel regarding her day to day. [say]"The clinic is doing well and it feels like things are finally settling back down after so long dealing with the void. It's nice."[/say]

RE: don't be salty - Melita - 11-06-2025

Melita hadn’t thought of the basic geography portions that might be taking shape, and her brows furrowed, pondering over how the rest of the coastlines were faring. [say]“Looks like shit, to be honest,”[/say] she shrugged. [say]“Took some portions of the memory mud stuff out, but there’s plenty left.” [/say]Hauling out the rest of her filled jogs, she followed Isla’s lead, plopping them down so she could tilt her head, study the healer’s work.

Admiring the scorch magic (and perhaps wondering if she could just boop the Ancient so she could use it too), she listened instead. Not a mender by any standard of operations, she’d be the first to admit working at a clinic would probably send her over the deep end, but she could appreciate the woman’s abilities and aptitude just the same. [say]“That’s good. I think it’s been so long since anything’s been settled, it feels weird.”[/say] She shrugged, then rocked back on her heels, figuring Isla would comprehend the notions. [say]“Do you want more water?” [/say]

RE: don't be salty - Isla - 11-08-2025

Wrinkling her noise as Mel, blunt and honest as always, regales her with the state of affairs in King's End. [say]"I've seen a bit of memory mud out towards the parts of the island with more earth and soil,"[/say] she agrees with a slow nod, transferring some leftover salt into her jar and commencing with another round of boiling it apart from the water. [say]"Nothing as bad as it must be out there with those Barrows all around, though. Maybe I'll try to pay a visit and lend a hand."[/say]

Unaware of the potential for booping, Isla continues with her scorch magic until more salt is available to transfer to the jar, pleased that things seem to be progressing reasonably quickly with it, though it does mean she's constantly waving the steam away from her face. [say]"Mm, it really does. I always feel like this after a big conflict - like I need to find myself things to keep busy, or my mind will make things up for me to worry about."[/say]

With one jug empty now and the jar of salt starting to fill up quite nicely, the Remedy offers an appreciative nod in response to Mel's question. [say]"Yes please. We're getting there, but we'll need a couple more jugs before we're close I think."[/say]

RE: don't be salty - Melita - 11-08-2025

[say]“Sunjata would probably appreciate that,” [/say]she nodded in agreement, watching as the salt seemed to be filtered away, admiring the transformation, and billowing steam away with her hands more than once. The agreement about repose after the conflict eased some of her doubts; that at least, others felt the same. They weren’t being useless – but there were other purposes and things to be done. [say]“Right, yeah,” [/say]she wrinkled her nose, stepping back, arms folded across her chest as she awaited brine verdicts. [say]“I’ve got enough to do, it’s just, y’know. Waiting for the next thing to fall apart. Even when shit’s going well.”[/say]

At her response though, the Honeybee nodded, snagging at the empty jug and several others, before skipping down the lane of dunes and sand. Repeating the same motions as before, she dipped one after the other below the waves, listening to it gurgle and bubble until filled, then rampaging back.

RE: don't be salty - Isla - 11-09-2025

Isla nods, locking that idea away in the back of her mind for when she gets home after this little venture. Which, as Mel has rightly pointed out, is at least something for them to keep their hands busy while they wait for the next round of horrors to drop. That isn't really a way to live, though, and Isla smiles her soft agreement to the Honeybee. [say]"I spent a long time thinking that way after the war ended,"[/say] she says. [say]"It's easy to fall back into it, too. But what if this peace lasts a long time? Wouldn't that be something?"[/say]

Her tone is playful as she continues evaporating the water from the salt, a girlish smile tugging at her lips. Hardly able to believe it, Isla is nevertheless quietly hopeful for long, quiet days ahead. Glancing back up to see Melita approach with more jugs of water, she adds some more salt to the jar and offers it out for her to hold. [say]"Will you let me know when it looks like we have enough? Otherwise we could probably keep doing this all day."[/say] Which, based on the gathering rainclouds overhead - no thank you.

RE: don't be salty - Melita - 11-10-2025

Melita wasn’t certain if she felt shame after Isla’s statement, or merely agreement – but knowing wasn’t the same as doing, and there’d always been some matter of dread in her life. She’d survived on cutting her teeth upon trepidation and using it to ensure she lived to see another day at a very young age – and then just continued from there. [say]“I guess,” [/say]she hummed at first. [say]“But I don’t want to be complacent either.”[/say] Lulled into false promises of peace and pretenses of swayed serenity, only to be blinded, skewered, and mauled the next. [say]“There’s probably something in between,”[/say] and she loosened a laugh so the opposite didn’t strangle her.

The Honeybee probably wasn’t the best to be salt supervisor, but with Isla at the helm, she supposed she ought to be doing more than juggling water back and forth. [say]“Sure.”[/say] She figured they needed a lot, considering it’d be necessary to add into the fountain. After a couple more moments and additional layers to the briny components, she added in her two cents. [say]“Think that might be plenty?”[/say]

RE: don't be salty - Isla - 11-11-2025

[say]"Probably,"[/say] Isla agrees with a soft smile, of that magical in between that they're all searching for. [say]"I bet it's a lot easier when you aren't a demigod as well, granted."[/say] Her smile twists towards amusement for a brief moment - it isn't as if Mel could fully switch off even if she wanted to these days, not with her tether to Ludo - before fading. [say]"Though I have been seeing a lot of rubber ducks around the place lately."[/say]

Raising her eyebrows - because obviously Mel doesn't have anything to do with that - Isla refocuses her efforts on her scorch magic, working dilligently until the other woman speaks up again at last. [say]"I think you might be right."[/say] The jar is mostly full, Isla dusting off her hands as if to dismiss the fire at her fingertips and reaching out to look properly. [say]"We don't want to make the water taste salty, so I think this should do it,"[/say] she agrees. [say]"Which I'm not complaining about. Come on, before it starts to pour down again."[/say]

RE: don't be salty - Melita - 11-11-2025

It’d only been a few years since she’d not been a demigod; but she remembered those days of a humongous lack of responsibility fondly. Not that Ludo made her do monumental tasks – she just inhabited a more productive role now. [say]“Oh, have you?”[/say] She mused with a massive grin and a wink. [say]“I’m glad things are catching on.” [/say]

With the salt inspection complete, and likely enough to render their current task finished, the Honeybee nodded, bundling up the rest of the things they’d brought – including the umbrella and the rest of the jars and buckets. [say]“Right. We can always stop by that new little café nearby too, the one that has the new muffins,”[/say] as she rambled on, ensuring they were out of the way and well off the beach by the time the rain rolled and poured once more.
