Things have begun to go to hell, it seems, and right before Leafchange when King’s End grew darker and stormier, gloomier. Perhaps it’s fitting that it matches his mood this year – with the season’s heat starting to dissipate thanks to Tanau’s apology and the approach of the cooler season. It almost has him reflective, retrospective, over Colt’s ranch burning down and the subsequent argument that stemmed from that.
It leaves him in the office of the government building not far from what was once his home, not far from the House of Midnight either. It makes him acutely aware that everything both in him and in the building he currently occupies, feels nothing more but empty. And he sits there, contemplating, looking at the book of things to do for the region and when to start the meeting for the healing river to be decided, choosing then and there that maybe instead of training soldiers or collecting unicorn horn shavings, that maybe they just focus on the region this season.
He scribbles it down to be sent off, rising from the seat to send it out and linger in the building for the scent of faint coffee that overrides the rest of the dusty papers and books to go through, before he starts on the rest of the things for the day.
