He had told her that he had done his best to research it with the books in the Atheneum - and he had, finding nothing. He had told her that Arduinna, one of the Fae, had told him of the disease and that Fae magic could not fix it, nor did Fae memory recognize it. To study it more thoroughly as she suggested he would have to go back into the Greatwood, causing more wounds to the neighbors she had chastised him for.
He could not win, but then... she was a goddess. There had never been any hope of that, once she set her mind against him.
He could do nothing but bow his head to the inevitable. Yes, Safrin, he managed coherently, amidst the devouring tendrils of despair that wrapped around his heart and soul, quenching the fire inside as thoroughly as the depths of the Oasis would a wayward spark. He did not lift his head or try to unfurl his wings, simply dropped to the ground, flowing into his vulpine form and stumbling away into the fallen night, a ghost among shadows as he left the goddess alone to her Shrine.
