let's play a game - Wessex - 10-12-2019

Did you know that in the past year and a change of being an Ascended, Wessex has never sparred with her own kind?

It’s kind of tragic.

Good thing she has a flunkie, now, the kind of person that’s supposed to be around when the Queen wants something - or to do something - and gets it done for her. @Anum can’t take away all of her tension, but he can be more or less a sentient punching bag. Probably less. He might get a strike or two in! Calling mentally to the man,’Anum? Meet me at the Labyrinth’ she exits Theskyra House and heads for the darker darkness that is overgrown hedges and trees.

There’s no plan tonight, no weapons. Just their Ascended senses and upgrades.

RE: let's play a game - Amun - 10-13-2019

Well. That was an ominous message if he’d ever heard one. In his mind, no less, and no mistaking who it was from. ‘Amun. Meet me at the Labyrinth.’ This sounded like an excellent way for him to die, and an excellent place for a body to get dumped.

Considering he’d been avoiding Wessex since the incident with the murder tree, he wasn’t sure how pissed she was with him. That she was pissed went without saying though. However, this was a direct order from the queen, so he figured he absolutely could not refuse. Also, he absolutely did not want to make her come find him; he’d been avoiding his punishment long enough, and prolonging the inevitable would just make her angrier. Plus, he was getting tired of all these fucking voices in his head.

So he sauntered on down to the Labyrinth. When he spotted the queen, he gave her a grin, though his eyes remained wary. [say]”You called?”[/say] He surveyed their surroundings, marking escape routes if everything went south. [say]”This wouldn’t be my choice for a nighttime tryst, but whatever floats your boat, Princess.”[/say] Maybe he was pushing his luck, but he mouthed off in basically every situation, and the familiar cadence of it steadied him.

RE: let's play a game - Wessex - 10-13-2019

[say] “Yeah, you’re never going to be free of me now,”[/say] she quips back, referring to her ability to speak to him directly. What a boon that little gift would have been when she was a kid, hell bent on torturing her sister but sentenced to silence by their mother. They don't have to respond, but good fucking luck ignoring a thundering head-voice once you don't show.

Whether or not he considers this a punishment or a lesson learned, or just plain old-fashioned geting stronger, Wessex doesn’t care. The bit at the murder tree is behind them and she  her marching orders, more or less. He needs to be able to stand his ground and contribute to the group.[say] “More like a little game. You hide. I seek. And I’ll even give you a head start,”[/say] she says with a graceful, sweeping flourish towards the labyrinth. He’ll have to use his speed and his wiles to get away from her, and she might even go easy on him for a little bit.

But it’s been far too long since she’s properly hunted, and Amun is a little morsel who might give her a bit of a challenge. The Wraith’s eyebrow arches in question. Shouldn’t he get moving?

RE: let's play a game - Amun - 10-13-2019

Well. This was not at all what he expected. Apparently, Wessex hadn’t gotten upset with him over the whole abandoning her and the others to the Mathair. Either that or she had gotten over being mad. He felt a wicked little grin spread across his lips. [say]”I like games, Princess. Always happy to play with you.”[/say] He winked at her. Then, without another word, he took off at a run deeper into the maze; he didn’t know much about this place, but he figured that the queen was far more familiar with it, so he wanted to take advantage of that whole head start she was offering him while it lasted. And if she was fucking with him, well, he probably deserved a little bit of that. Besides, fucking was fun. Time to see if Wessex was a good playmate.

RE: let's play a game - Wessex - 10-14-2019

Well. Amun might not like this one as much as some of the other games he might have played. Cause he forgot to ask what would happen if Wessex caught him.[say] ‘You should always get the rules of the game, Amun,’[/say] she calls out in a ‘tsk-tsk’ tone of voice.[say] ‘You don’t know what happens if I find you.’[/say] And neither does she, but he doesn’t need to know that yet. The Wraith offers a sly smile into the dark, counting to fifteen before she skips in after him.

Deepfrost is their playtime; when the nights grow long and the days grow short, she feels her powers wane less than usual. She feels them, itching to be let loose. Pausing for a moment to listen, Wessex peers into the night, tilting her head this way and that the way a large cat might before she surges quietly in one direction, using her speed to move as close to soundlessly as she can. Giving credence to her nickname, anyone overhead might see her gliding over the top of the crunchy snow, a shock of blonde hair and pale skin the only indication that she’s moving .

[say]’Amuuuun,’[/say] she stage-whispers to him.[say] ‘Where aaaaare you?’[/say]

RE: let's play a game - Amun - 10-14-2019

Again, if Wessex wanted to waste her non-existent breath and energy on speaking to him, Amun was going to use it to his advantage. Frankly, he didn’t think he needed to know what would happen to him beyond bad shit. At her next question however, he took corners even faster. At this point, he couldn’t even say where he was, so he wouldn’t have been able to answer even if he had been dumb enough to say something. She was probably a much better tracker than he was, so when he came to a fork in the labyrinth, he made took some very obvious steps in one direction. Then he backed up carefully, stepping back where he had. Reaching the fork again, he turned and moved ahead, trying to leave as few marks of his passage behind as possible.

RE: let's play a game - Wessex - 10-16-2019

Wessex begins to speed up, caring very little whether or not she makes any noise. Speed is her forte - far more than strength. Speed and smarts save her ass, time and time again (and perhaps a little luck, too) so it is speed and smarts that she will try and impart on Anum. Forcibly, if she has to.

She reaches the fork soon after he does, darts past the footprints, and then pauses and backs up. Oh, clever man. A silver star for you! Speaking squirrels confirm her thoughts with squeaks of ‘follow me! Follow me!’ that echo down the correct fork.

Rather than going back through the maze, Wessex decides to climb. Her claws pop out and she uses them to haul herself up a hedge. It isn’t very high - no more than twelve feet or so - so it doesn’t take her too long. From there, she begins to run along the top of the topiary. Jumping over the occasional break or overgrowth or swinging through the tree limbs. It isn’t as fast as before, but she can see much further.

Lo and behold - she thinks she sees movement and grins wickedly to herself. Come out, come out, wherever you are.

RE: let's play a game - Amun - 10-16-2019

When voices started speaking behind Amun, he nearly cursed; however, just because someone was giving away his location didn’t mean he needed to help them. Still, he glanced backwards, and was annoyed to see fucking squirrels of all things—Caido had the weirdest shit in it—that apparently spoke. And had a grudge against him, not that he was super pleased with them at the moment. Apparently he wasn’t going to be able to outrun Wessex. However, that didn’t mean he couldn't evade her.

As he heard rustling from above, he figured there was something on his tail. And it sounded too big to be one of the evil talking squirrels. Not wanting to take any chances, he immediately dropped and rolled under the hedges. Then, he held as still as he possibly could. Given that he was an Ascended, so didn’t need to breathe or have a heartbeat, that was pretty still.

RE: let's play a game - Wessex - 10-17-2019

The niggling movement disappears, which is both frustrating and potentially enlightening. It could be a wild thing that slips through the hedges in ways the Ascended can’t. Or it could be an Amun thing who’s realized Wessex is closer than he thinks and has tried another tactic.

Good.

She has nothing in her this time - no magic, no upgrades or tools that will help her with this kind of hunting. This kind of hunting only through experience, from a life in the Hallowed Grounds and trying to provide for a family. Wessex goes a little further and then jumps down from the top of the hedge, a soft whump heard as her feet hit the frozen ground. She scans the ground for any tell-tale signs of passage, leaning close to search for fibers or hair or prints on the earth. Looking across the path to the hedges on either side, Wessex chooses one and peers in, looking in and along its twisted edges as far as she can, until she suddenly darts to the other side and shoves her talons into it.

The element of surprise is strong in this one.

RE: let's play a game - Amun - 10-17-2019

Amun didn’t have much of a plan here besides laying there and hoping that Wessex wouldn’t find his hiding spot. Given that he couldn’t run and he couldn’t fight, that’s about all he could do. Still, he could hear the queen getting closer, the rustling leaves heralding her approach. Trying to hold himself stiller, if such a thing were possible. However, that didn’t prove enough to save him: although it sounded like Wessex was getting farther for a brief moment, there was a flurry of noise and motion before claws stabbed into his side.

It didn’t hurt, of course, but he still reflexively whimpered. Again, on instinct, he tried to push away the blades—only succeeding in cutting his fingers, of course—and scramble away, trying to put the hedge between him and the queen. Fuck she was good at this. And he very much was not.

RE: let's play a game - Wessex - 10-17-2019

To be fair, she’s never said what would happen when she catches him. Amun did a bunch of assuming, and Wessex doesn’t care to correct assumptions. She might have said ‘nothing,’ if he’d asked, or just as likely, ‘I’m going to carve you up like thanksgiving turkey.’ And now we’ll never know, because she wasn’t actually aiming for him, she just happened to get lucky.

I mean, what kind of Queen tries to kill the people on her side?

She has so few.

When Amun whimpers, Wessex blurts out a surprised[say] "Fuck!"[/say] The blades withdraw quickly and she thrusts a non-bladed hand in, trying to grasp at his shirt or something. Anything to pull him towards her and assess the damage. Does it need the Voice? Is it just a flesh wound? The Wraith grimaces at herself - she’s too good at this, and now she’s done more than try to teach a lesson, she’s done some harm.

RE: let's play a game - Amun - 10-17-2019

As Wessex snatched at Amun’s shirt—she caught him, of course, because he was a fucking slowpoke compared to her—he figured that this was part of the game, and he struggled against her, still trying to get out on the other side of the hedge. Even though she’d cursed, he wasn’t willing to trust that this wasn’t part of some punishment. Maybe that was why, instead of letting her just yank him out from his no longer hidden spot (though she dragged him forward, alright) he brought his hands up to attempt to pry her fingers off. If he could break her grip, maybe he could buy himself a few more seconds. Of course, his efforts were hampered by his wound. Even if they hadn't been, the potter was no match for the queen.

RE: let's play a game - Wessex - 10-17-2019

Amun manages to begin to pry her fingers open, but by then she’s sheathed her other set of claws and reaches in with the other hand to try and pull him out. Feeling around for something of his to grab on to again, if she’s successful, she leans back and pulls towards herself with a big yank in order to get the guy free of the hedge. The game, quick as it was, is over. And this is why Wessex doesn’t have any friends; she isn’t good at games.

How he got himself in there, she really doesn’t know.

[say] “You idiot,”[/say] she growls.[say] “Let me take a look at that.”[/say]

RE: let's play a game - Amun - 10-17-2019

Unsurprisingly, Wessex was able to haul Amun out without much effort. Just because he had lean muscle didn’t actually mean he was strong or that he knew what to do with it in a fight. However, as he felt himself get pulled out of the hedge, he decided to change tactics. Like water, instead of fighting the pull of the queen, he flowed with it; his desperate scramble backwards turned into a desperate lunge forward, trying to throw his whole weight into tackling Wessex. It was an entirely uncoordinated motion, but it had speed and force behind it, and she was already pulling him into her.

It was only after he’d thrown himself forward that her words registered. [say]”You stabbed me!”[/say] It probably wasn’t the most intelligent thing to say, and his voice was more indignant but wounded, but he wasn’t going to trust that this wasn’t all part of her game.
