never had a friend like me - Random Event - 12-12-2019

Oh ho ho. What's all this, then? Newcomers - a whole gaggle of them. Southerners from the warmlands, trespassing in the snow like they own the place without so much as a by-your-leave.

It's simply rude is what it is. Good thing they have a friend like you to set their little heads on right.

At the edge of Whitebrim a box has appeared. Old, leather, the handheld briefcase is a far cry from the shiny lamps of many other tales, but then again the thing that lives within is a far cry from them, too. It isn't often he chooses to emerge, but when he does it is always with a great deal of pomp and circumstance.

As people begin to gather around the briefcase starts to vibrate. Crimson smoke leaks like blood from the cracks and cervices where the two sides of the case have come together. The latches, bronze and weather-worn, snap open with a pop! For now, though, the case remains shut -

- but obviously it won't stay so for long.

(Perhaps importantly to note, the citizens of Whitebrim are nowhere to be found.)

RE: never had a friend like me - Amun - 12-12-2019

Amun liked to think of himself as somewhat of an expert on Whitebrim, what with having been there before (which was better than most non-Halovians). So he decided to go back out there, (dropping off a bag of apples he'd acquired with guards on the way) since he was convinced the place (and its inhabitants) were still hiding secrets. Plus exploring and serving as the eyes and ears of The Voice shit to do.

As he approached, though, it was quiet. Very quiet. With nary a soul in view. And he soon saw unusual smoke rising in the air. Intrepid explorer that he was, he immediately sauntered over, whistling cheerfully. Stopping a short distance away, he peered at the case that was the source of the mysterious crimson smoke, waiting for it to do something more interesting.

Hopefully it wouldn't try to kill him like everything else in Caido.

RE: never had a friend like me - Sunjata - 12-12-2019

It has taken a great deal of motivation, to try and at least see a small amount of Halo. And it had taken even more to find the portal, to convince himself to give it a shot, embrace the cold and to just say that he went, even if half the time he’d try to keep his eyes shut, eyes on the horizon and sky rather than the earth below him. It felt like a nightmare at first, once he’d slipped through the portal and felt the horrible chill. And he can’t fathom why Lusea would have done this, can’t understand it at all.

He shifts into his avian form, taking to the sky and scans the skyline, the way the clouds are different here, until something off in the distance from a time of flying, catches his eye. It’s scarlet, it’s vibrant, and his heart thunders in his chest until he realizes it’s smoke. And he regains enough composure to focus, to spot the closed briefcase, and a crowd gathering. He circles for a moment, landing and shifting to his human form, arm’s crossed, shadowed steel gaze focused on the briefcase and saying nothing.

RE: never had a friend like me - Nate - 12-12-2019

Being in the right pace at the right time was something of a skill of Nate’s, as much as it can be a skill. But it had supported an entire way of life back in his old world, where back alley deals and avoiding the wrong eyes had been his bread and butter, and it seems not too much has changed here.

Whitebrim was, by all accounts, a depressing place, the location, and necessity of its placement not really doing any favours for its image. But, as he approaches the small crowd that’s forming with Sam by his side, it seems something interesting is going on. Something interesting and spewing red smoke. A smile spreads over his face, and he pulls Sam along, pushing to the front of the gathered crowd to see.

A briefcase?

What a strangely familiar situation to have found himself in, though the contents of this particular case are probably not at all similar to the cases in his past. Still, he stands and watches, waiting to see what comes of this.

RE: never had a friend like me - Jigano - 12-12-2019

No tour of Halo would be complete without checking out the exiles from the Citadel, Jigano and Loren had decided. So on their way back from their visit to the primary place of human survival in the great white west they had chosen to take a long detour out towards the fabled town of Whitebrim. (Not all fables end well after all. Some of them are quite bloody, at their core.)

That was the short explanation for why and how a silver dragon soared low through the skies with a small honeybadger clinging to his scaly back, nestled in the dip of his shoulderblades between his wings. They circled the town curiously before a column of scarlet smoke drew their attention and Jigano landed nearby before hunkering down behind a snow drift to shift back to his human form, shivering as the cold wind struck through through his heavy layers as it hadn't done through his scales. He joined his fellow Loreseeker in approaching the mysteriously smoking suitcase, nodding, warily to the others who had arrived ahead of them.

RE: never had a friend like me - Loren - 12-12-2019

When Loren had agreed to let Jigano fly them out to the reject bin of Halo Whitebrim the summoner had forgotten one very important fact: he hated flying. So he huddled against the bard’s scales the entire way there, shaking. Although the Launceleyn tried to keep the terror from spilling through their bond, he wasn’t sure how successful he was.

When they finally touched down, Loren slid off the white-haired man’s scaly back. Then the summoner simply clung to the ground, trembling for a bit. Once he’d calmed, he sent a silent prayer of thanks to Frey for their survival. Only then did he feel comfortable enough to shift back to human and approach the strangely smoking case.

RE: never had a friend like me - Melita - 12-12-2019

She’d never been the mountains.

Beyond the awe-inspiring the beauty, and the biting cold that drove its way into her skin, an onslaught, a terrorizing, treacherous thing by its own admission, scorching along her flesh far more than the sun-kissed desert ever had. The girl immediately tucked herself back into a perilous amount of furs, dipping below collars, pushing her hat further down her ears, her crimson locks, weapons banging against her back, and Fangorn in her arms, all huddling together for warmth. Her inclinations weren’t to rush forward for once, taking her time, biding her pace, the unknown gaping and clawing at her, stealing her breath; suddenly wondering what she was doing here at all.

Curiosity. Boldness. Audacity. Things that clung to her, things that were sometimes fortunate, things that sometimes christened and anointed her as a fool. She wasn’t sure which one she’d stepped within now.

Her eyes adjusted to havens of white and sanctums of stretching abyss, until there seemed to be a crowd growing nearby, and she recognized quite a few, Amun, Sunjata (shocked he was here), Jigano, and Loren – the pair scrambled their way towards the crowd, opting to head towards Sunjata. [say]“What’s going on?”[/say] An inquiry behind clothing and scarves wrapped around and over her mouth, her nape, billowing air curling from her breath. Only thereafter did she see the intriguing briefcase, and it seemed all of them had been tied and tethered to it – waiting.

RE: never had a friend like me - Deimos - 12-12-2019

More pathways, more uncertainties, more interludes of summits and peaks, and the wide, stretching enigmas of mountains that weren’t like his own. Safrin had informed them of this, the auroras, the abyss, the glaciers not the same, and still, he sought out the similarities, the parallels. The huts reminded him of refugees, of days spent out on the Frostbreath Steppe, awaiting some other hazardous, treacherous miracle –

His attuned eyes caught the edges of a crowd looming, and the maneuvering mass of his feline shape wandered closer, gaze flickering along the cause of so many gathered – a briefcase. In his human form, he would’ve arched a brow, but the nature of his current state didn’t permit it – and instead his senses wandered over the others inclined to seek out their curiosities too – silent and stoic now, waiting for whatever was to come.

RE: never had a friend like me - Samuel - 12-12-2019

Sam was rather anxious to enter Whitebrim at all, but Nate had always seemed to know when something was worth looking into, so he had trusted his companion. Actually seeing a crowd, a rare sight in the tundra, Sam had to admit his curiosity was piqued.

On his toes to see over the heads in the crowd, Sam frowned as he saw that a briefcase was what was drawing all their attention. Was that really worth all this fuss? He supposed if it had not been there before, maybe, but how had so many people known about it? It was very odd indeed, and that more than anything else made him want to stick around and see what happened.

RE: never had a friend like me - Jiao - 12-12-2019

Jiao was loving Halo. So many exciting things to do, new things to see...yes, a lot of them were dangerous like bears that might want to eat her, but a lot of them were so interesting too! She was finding the risk only added to the excitement of the whole trip, that there was far more to life when you weren't just stuck in a shop making dresses.

Hearing there was something going on in Whitebrim, she had headed up as quickly as possible, dressed in the most ridiculously extravagant fur coat and boots she had, warm woollen clothing underneath and a large hat for her head. The Fae looked less like a person and more like a pom pom, but she was almost warm, so it was worth it.

She stayed a little back from the crowd, wary that the briefcase would become something dangerous. She was sure whatever happened, she'd see it from where she was.

RE: never had a friend like me - Oliver - 12-13-2019

Okay. He finally decided to go and see what this Halo place was all about. He had come alone, but he still followed after a redheaded man who was just around his height. He had heard enough to know what to expect and even brought some firewood and spices to leave by the portal, unable to provide meat due to the fact that he had never hunted. Oliver came wearing a coat and three different sweaters plus two pairs of pants. He looked a bit like a marshmallow and was for sure wearing too much, but he hated the cold and wanted to avoid it at all costs.

There was a large gathering of people and he made his way over to Sunjata, a person that he felt comfortable with. Leaning over, he whispered to the other man. [say]"Hey...what's going on?"[/say] Also he kind of wanted to mooch off of his body warmth. Is that weird? Yeah, it's totally weird.

RE: never had a friend like me - Harper - 12-13-2019

Harper can't tell you how he got here, portals and pathways still too magic-filled and confusing for him, but well. Here he is. Standing stupidly in a crowd of growing people, right in front of a weird suitcase that really shouldn't be moving on its own.

The cold is nearly unbearable, though he'd been told to bundle up as he'd approached the Spire. Gods bless that person, otherwise his reproductive ability would be greatly at risk right now. With a cheeky grin and a wave at Oliver, he sidles into an empty space, curious what draws everyone here and ready to watch whatever happens.

RE: never had a friend like me - Noah - 12-13-2019

Nothing ever comes without a consequence or cost

He didn't know any of these people. He watched them carefully, black eyes casting over each of their frames. They seemed to be huddled around something -- something creating smoke. The crimson puff lifted up, and Noah's large ears rotated forward. He stepped forward, curious, on cloven hooves. He lowered his head, trying to control his breathing as he continually moved forward. He stopped, however, before he was too close to the gathering crowd. He watched, carefully.

This crowd was full of strangers -- and none of them looked like the natives of this place. None of them were trying to take the case and its contents, even with the ominous looking smoke, and take it away for themselves. What was this? Noah took a step sideways, lifting his head some. He needed to be ready to flee if the moment turned to something dangerous. He stayed in reindeer form, ears flicking back and forth, listening.

RE: never had a friend like me - Delphia - 12-14-2019

How had Delphia gotten there? Why was she there? Who knew? Certainly no living soul (and the dead, while knowledgeable weren't known for being particularly chatty). But she was if only because of a levelling requirement and at the end of the day, that was really all that mattered. More importantly, spoopy things were afoot! And wherever spoopy things were, Delphia was usually quick to follow.

A large crowd had gathered, which was fairly unusual for Halo from what she knew of the place. As the suitcase began to billow red smoke, and the latches popped open, her brows furrowed. She had seen enough odd happenings in her lifetime to recognize that this wasn't some ordinary trickery. [say]"Hello there, friend. Whatever has upset you?"[/say] she said softly, more concerned with the emotional state of whatever controlled the suitcase than whatever it might hold.
