beware of the dock - Delta - 04-15-2020

The process of going blind was... honestly overwhelming. It was absolutely terrifying and not something Delta ever wanted to live through again. Luckily, like many things in the world, the blindness was not permanent. It didn't happen over night, but eventually whatever disastrous thing happened to her eyes faded away. Choosing to be far more careful, Delta chose to avoid the shrine altogether, instead wanting to get some fresh air- experience things she almost lost due to her blindness.

Swimming up to the port, Delta would try her best to stay hidden, but still try and look around at anything happening on shore. She chose this specific spot since she could easily hide under the dock and there also tended to be a bit more activity in this section of Torchline. Hopefully, her trip wouldn't be in vain (and hopefully her father wouldn't catch wind and get mad).

Seren

RE: beware of the dock - Ronin - 04-15-2020

Hand in hand with Seren, Ronin strolled along the docks. He had promised her that they would visit the shoreline more often, and especially now that he was giving her swimming lessons, he felt a little bit more comfortable with her along the waterfront. Still, he had his choker with the cloud manta crystal embedded into it in his pocket, just in case the worst were to happen.

[say]"Here,"[/say] he said, pausing at the edge of the docks and leaning down so he was on the same level as the girl. [say]"See out there? The ships are beginning to be able to leave port to go further out to sea, now. That means Haulani is getting better and the smoke isn't so bad from the volcano. Maybe we can take a trip on a boat soon, what do you think?"[/say]

RE: beware of the dock - Seren - 04-15-2020

She loved the ocean. The way it changed color with the weather, how it seemed to be in a different mood every day. It was big and beautiful and blue, and the swimming lessons had quickly become her favorite thing to do. Second only to flying on the cloud.

Gazing eagerly out at the ships, she kept a firm grip on his hand. Had promised not to let go as long as they walked by the water, and Seren had no intention of being taken away from the sea by breaking the rule. [say]"Yes please! Can Saiden come too? He said he lives on a boat,"[/say] she replied, cheerful as always.

A crab scurried past her foot, and Seren's gaze fell to look at it. Something in the water caught her attention then, a shape seen just at the corner of her eye... looking up,  she squinted curiously into the bobbing waves.

RE: beware of the dock - Delta - 04-17-2020

From beneath the small bit of water that separated her from the surface, Delta could mostly make out what they were saying. Only really when they came close to the edge could she truly make it out. It sounded like normal talking and it was only when she heard the name Saiden that her ears perked up. Peering up above her, she made eye contact with the young girl, the one who spoke Saiden's name.

Slowly, Delta emerged from the water, allowing her head to break the surface. Tilting her head, she watched the girl and offered her a small wave and a smile. It seemed rude to speak at this point- they were in the middle of a conversation! That would just be improper and most likely leave a bad impression of her, but also, the girl noticed her and it would be absolutely rude to just ignore her. So Delta had a compromise: a wave. It was short, sweet, and that little smile hopefully would be enough to show the girl that Delta was friendly.

At first, Delta really wanted to know who the two were and how they knew Saiden, after all, Saiden most likely isn't a common name. But now? She was a bit interested in the girl, curious to see what she would do next.

RE: beware of the dock - Ronin - 04-17-2020

It shouldn't come as a surprise that Seren had wandered off and knew Saiden, apparently, but Ronin still had to be shocked at the number of people that his daughter had run into. Internally he scolded himself for not being a better father, but he didn't let any of it show on his face. [say]"How did you meet Saiden?"[/say] he inquired instead, not having noticed the mermaid surfacing beneath them.

[say]"He does live on a ship, that's right. Maybe he will know a good one that we can take a ride on, even if he doesn't come with us. I don't know how busy he is, after all. Working on a ship takes up a lot of your time."[/say] He winked.

RE: beware of the dock - Seren - 04-18-2020

It hadn't been completely lawless, but bad enough perhaps, depending on the point of view. [say]"I was on the beach with Haai, and he was there and wanted to go fishing. But he hurt the worm, and then Sunjata came and we all went back to his house and played. Sunjata became a bird and I caught him!"[/say] she rattled off, happily recounting the adventure. There was perhaps a bit of self-righteous upset in the emphasis she put on the part with the poor mangled worm, speared on a fisherman's hook... but mostly because it was fun to have something to be angry about. There was also quite a bit of merciless glee in the way she told of Sunjata's ignominous capture.

She was about to say something else, when the dark shape in the water came into clearer view. Turning from an indistinct blob into the stuff of legend. Of tales and myths, of every bedtime story she ever demanded. It was a mermaid, and she waved at Seren. The girl gasped in shocked delight and took a firmer grip on Ronin's hand, not so much waving back - though she really meant to - as pointing with a trembling little hand.

[say]"Daddy, look, it's a mermaid!"[/say] she breathed, too happy to even breathe properly.

RE: beware of the dock - Delta - 04-19-2020

Eavesdropping was very unladylike... and Delta absolutely knew that. Yeah... but also, she couldn't help the fact that these two were talking decently loud. They were also in public... so it's fine! Anyways, she did find out quite a bit just from the small bit she had already heard. The little girl had also met two other land-walkers, one named Haai and another named Sunjata. Haai sounds a lot like a greeting and Sunjata sounds like an instrument, like a flute... at least in Delta's eyes. Or ears? Whatever. The male voice was surprised and he seemed like a father figure. Interesting.

It seemed that her eavesdropping had come to an end, but all was not lost. The expression on the girl's face was amusing and caused Delta's lips to turn up in a smile. She had never seen someone so excited to see her, everyone else had showed polite restraint. This also was the first time she had met someone with such a youthful spirit... as well as meeting someone with a femininity to them. The sudden pointing of her out, though, did cause Delta to shrink back ever so slightly, worried about what the man could do to her, but she remained above the water, now switching between looking at the two, but mostly focusing on the man. Hopefully he wouldn't be too much of a threat.

RE: beware of the dock - Ronin - 04-19-2020

Relaxing a fraction at hearing that at least Haai and Sunjata had been close to hand, but vowing firmly to himself to keep a better eye on his daughter, Ronin nodded along with Seren's story, smiling softly. [say]"It sounds like quite the adventure,"[/say] he said. [say]"Well, whether or not Saiden comes with us on the boat ride, we'll have to call on him soon and say hello."[/say] He ought to check how the sailor was getting on anyway; it would have definitely been something Vanya would have wanted, and Ronin wouldn't go against that.

But then suddenly Seren was looking down through the boards to the water below, pointing at a mermaid, of all things. Raising an eyebrow, Ronin straightened up and peered over the dock to see what she meant. And there was, indeed, a girl in the water, though the hunter did not jump straight to assuming it was one of the mythical folk of Torchline. [say]"Are you alright?"[/say] he called down to the girl, wondering if perhaps she was someone in trouble.

A pretty girl in the water could obviously only mean one thing. Seren practically vibrated with excitement as Ronin looked over into the water and spotted the mermaid, and oh, he talked to her! If he needed anymore hero points in her eyes, here they were for the taking.

Wide eyed and curious, Seren dared a few steps closer to the edge of the dock. Still with a firm grip on Ronin's hand. She wanted to see this miracle a bit better.

RE: beware of the dock - Delta - 04-20-2020

The next few moments were interesting to say the least. The man with her seemed to be a parental guardian and was taking on a very protective stance. His reaction to her was interesting and to try and help him, Delta swam to where the two would easily be able to see her. He also seemed... concerned? How funny. [say]"Why wouldn't I be okay?"[/say] She said with a slight giggle, clearly confused on why he even asked her that. She was a mermaid and could swim. [say]"I'm not stuck, if that's what you're asking."[/say] It hadn't even occurred to her that the man would think she was anything other than a mermaid.

Turning to look at the girl, Delta watched as she crept closer to the edge. Delta offered her a smile, but also made sure to watch with intense gaze, making sure that if she were to fall in, she would be able to rescue her. [say]"What's your name?"[/say] She asked the little girl, humored by the excitement and joy that was very clearly evident.

RE: beware of the dock - Ronin - 04-20-2020

As the girl swam into view, in the clear water Ronin could clearly make out that she was, in fact, a mermaid - or at least an Attuned with the correct sort of shift. [say]"I didn't know if you had fallen into the water,"[/say] he said by way of apology, his hand still in Seren's as she addressed her. [say]"I'm glad to know you aren't stuck. What brings you to the port...?"[/say] The merfolk were an elusive sort, from what he had learned from Remi, and to see one so close was a rarity indeed.

But then again, he knew just how much his daughter loved them, and as the girl addressed Seren directly he nodded encouragement to her. [say]"Go ahead,"[/say] he invited. [say]"Why don't you introduce us both?"[/say]

RE: beware of the dock - Seren - 04-20-2020

The mermaid came out into more open water, and Seren all but devoured her with her eyes. Pretty as a picture, small and petite and with flowing fins partly obscured by the water, Delta was every bit the mermaid Seren's favorite stories had suggested.

She took a long, staggered breath when she was addressed, and was encouraged to speak for both her and her father. It was amazing. It was... frankly a bit nervewracking.

[say]"My name is Seren. And this is Ronin. He is my dad."[/say] She announced the last bit with a towering pride, like it was the best rekommendation she could give. For both of them.

[say]"What is your name? You are really pretty,"[/say] she said with a wistful smile. Wishing she could swim well enough to get in the water right away.

RE: beware of the dock - Delta - 04-20-2020

There was something about the man that amused Delta and she already was enjoying the conversation. A light giggle left her lips at his concern. Not that she was laughing at him, more like at the situation. [say]"Don't worry, I'm fine. I'm flattered by your concern."[/say] It was more of that final statement. A stranger really cared that much about her? Wow. While she did absolutely care about others, she just didn't see how someone could think she was in any danger. Then again, Delta wasn't exactly considering the whole situation and at this point, was concerned about the young girl falling into the water. His next question was... interesting. It wasn't a unique one, no, but it was one that she once more didn't quite expect. [say]"I wanted to look around at stuff. See what was going on and see what I could find."[/say] There was a gleam of excitement in her eyes as clearly, she had found something extremely unique and fun.

It was revealed soon enough that this man was her father. How fitting. Before Delta could give a name, she was already receiving a fantastic compliment from the girl. Her cheeks now adorned with a light blush, she offers Seren a smile. [say]"Thank you, you are very pretty yourself."[/say] The girl had fantastic hair, one that Delta was almost envious of. [say]"I'm Delta. It's nice to meet you both."[/say] Now that pleasantries were out of the way and this Ronin fellow was hopefully no longer concerned, maybe she could get some fun conversations out of these mouthbreathers.

But where should she even start? There were so many questions to ask! [say]"What are you two doing out here? It isn't too often that I get noticed. Most people are...distant. Thinking of other things."[/say] Then again, she also was kind of not supposed to speak to people too often before recently... so maybe that's why nobody ever noticed her. Oh well.

RE: beware of the dock - Ronin - 04-21-2020

Smilng proudly at his daughter as she introduced them both, Ronin couldn't say that he was quite as overwhelmed by the appearance of the mermaid. But then again that was probably due to the great many other weird and wonderful things he had seen in his time. Besides, the girl (Delta, it transpired) seemed to be as clueless about his concern as he was about her appearance.

[say]"It's nice to meet you too,"[/say] he said, his hand still securely in Seren's so if she wanted to lean down and get a closer look she wouldn't have as much of a chance to tumble into the water. [say]"We were just taking a walk along the dock to look at the water and the boats, weren't we?"[/say] He glanced to his daughter. [say]"It's nice to see them finally getting further out to sea, now the ash is clearing."[/say]
