The omnivore's dilemma - Wessex - 04-19-2020

It hadn’t surprised Wessex to hear that the cannibals in Halo had only become more menacing. The request from Neron, however, was. But as she’d told Loren before, when family calls (even when that particular member of the family has cost her a valuable opportunity), she answers. Because there will be debts and they will be paid. This ensures she can call on Neron and more or less make him vote as she'd prefer him to.

Members of the cannibal-hunting party had been verified, notes sent out, places and times determined. So one morning, when the sun is as high as it gets in Halo during the end of Leafchange, the Wraith meets the Halovian members at the head of the Whitebrim mine and while she waits, marvels at the fact that she’s still at a loss for how they’re all going to get along. She's got a small bag of tricks along with her regular bow and arrow combo, but it hardly looks like she's over-prepared.

Well. They can cross that bridge when they come to it. Until then - onward and downward and all that jazz.

-------------------------------------

This is a PQ+ to take care of the Cannibal situation in Halo.

Requirements: Have heard about increased activity IC from a member of Neron's cabinet, or have seen the recent cannibal activity for yourself (feel free to use the NPC account). Either build defences for the city, or try and eliminate the cannibal threat. Should include at least one resident of Halo.

Hear about the activity IC: you scratch my back
Halovians: err, all except Wessex

The PQ slots have been filled:
1. Wessex
2. Neron
3. Morgan
4. Loren
5. Zariah

Please state what you’ve brought:

Wessex has her normal bow and arrows, handcuffs, Ascended adrenaline boost, Remi's magical crystal and monster repellant.

RE: The omnivore's dilemma - Loren - 04-19-2020

Loren was fully expecting this to fall apart immediately and spectacularly. Everyone here was too strong-willed and not willing to listen. It was always bad when he was a contender for one of the more reasonable people in the party.

Still, he'd shown up when Wessex had asked, without complaint. And he'd shown up with his full arsenal of abilities and tools: glasses on his nose, amulet and scale on a necklace around his neck, sword at his hip, daggers tucked into his belt along with his unicorn horn, pouch on his other hip. He also had a small pack with food, water, rope, and a torch, since he never knew what he'd encounter on these excursions.

In addition to food, water, a torch, and some rope in a pack, Loren brought the following:

Type: Grey
Spectacular Spectacles {upgraded} | These glasses, which have a small chain attached that allows Loren to wear them around his neck when not in use and makes it more difficult for them to be removed, allow Loren to see through projected visual illusions. The enchantment works for anyone who wears the glasses. In addition, the glasses are made of materials that have been magically reinforced so that they cannot be broken or destroyed easily, not even with the use of other magic.

Type: Dark
Krosis {upgraded} | A magical claymore. When placed in a defensive position in front of the body, and hit with a lifedrain or disintegration attack, the blade will instantly convert the magic into pure energy and then reflect the attack either at the user if left motionless, or in a new direction if the blade is swung. The latter is more difficult to do as it requires perfect timing on behalf of the wielder.

Type: Grey
Boomerang Daggers | A set of three throwing knives. When thrown, they will always return to the user. Take care when throwing them all at once!

Type: Light
Unicorn Horn: Imbued with minor healing abilities (upgraded level)

Type: Dark
Feather Pouch | A pouch that renders the Spark Bird's feather safe while it is inside. (Made by Remi)

Type: Dark
Feather of the Spark Bird | Provides a constant source of light, and can be used to start fires from even the most inflammable of objects and even in terrible conditions (rain, wind, etc).

Type: Grey
Magical Amulet | When (abandoned) magic is cast at this device, it can store the power and reuse it as controlled by the wielder. (Made by Remi)

Type: Light
Snake-Guardian Scale: A palm-sized opalescent scale from one of Rae's portal guardians. When used, it will take the holder from their current position into the portalling dimension regardless of where they are. Once it has been used, it will disappear.

RE: The omnivore's dilemma - Morgan - 04-20-2020

Hearing that this mission would be run by an Ascended made Morgan's skill crawl, especially as their Warden was coming too: but she knew how to put things aside for the greater good, and for the moment their shared enemy was common. Arriving on Eunike's back, armour and cloak pulled close around her, she wore a steady expression.

She didn't say anything, just nodded at both Wessex and Loren. The task ahead would be difficult and she wanted to save her energy for the actual battle. With a dagger strapped to her boot and a hammer across her back, she brought no magical items except the cloak she always wore, confident in here abilities without.

--
Morgan has:

A dagger and a warhammer.

Type: Light
Heat-Cloak | A magical cloak that always keeps the wearer warm.

EUNIKE - Mythical - Unicorn (Healing)

aand that's it.

RE: The omnivore's dilemma - Neron - 04-21-2020

There were so many things that Neron might say about this situation.

He definitely owed Wessex for this, to begin with.

And he would be amazed should Morgan not try to assassinate one or both of them before the mission was through. Or Zariah when she turned up, for that matter.

Also, when and how did his slip of a twin acquire Roana Steadman's fucking claymore, and did he know how to lift it, let alone use it? Had he known of Loren's ever so positive appraisal of the situation, too, he might have commented on it. Alas.

Arriving in his customary black, this time with a wide hood to shroud his face in shadow (thanks for looking out for your younger siblings, Wessex), Neron was equipped with a rapier and carried a pack with supplies - rope, ice hooks, a pick and so on. He also wore his mageglass pendant beneath his clothes, but no one would be privy to that information.

[say]"Wessex - thank you for coming."[/say] He nodded to the Wraith. [say]"Once Zariah arrives, we will hopefully make this as quick as possible."[/say]

Neron has brought:

A rapier

A pack with rope, ice hooks and a pick

Mageglass Pendant | A large, prismatic stone suspended from a chain of silver. This pendant doubles the power of any magic that the user wields.

And that's it!

RE: The omnivore's dilemma - Zariah - 04-21-2020

And this is why they should have just killed all the cannibals in the first place Morgan.

Zariah arrived in all black, similar to Neron. Thankfully, since she had begun training rigorously again with students at the Academy, she found a cold resistance had built up for her, allowing her to dress in less cumbersome layers. Doll-like hazel eyes scanned the group. One person she had tried to kill once upon a time. One person she loathed. One person who was incompetent. And Neron. This should go just swimmingly.

The Archmage stopped next to Neron, glancing at him sidelong with a raised brow. He did know this was going to be a clusterfuck, right?

But then her eyes caught onto the giant claymore on Loren's hip - a relic that any of the Northaveners would be familiar with. She gave Loren a dead-eyed look, though was presumably unimpressed...which she of course confirmed. [say]"What in the god's names do you plan on doing with that? That thing is probably heavier than you are."[/say] she said dryly.

Zariah has:

Enchanted Cartilage Cuff | This piece of jewelry gives the wearer +3 dexterity for one post in a thread. As a magician, this allows her to cast a number of spells at a higher rate for that one post but loses its affect after that for the rest of the thread.

Magical Crystal | When (abandoned) magic is cast at this device, it can store the power and reuse it as controlled by the wielder.

That's it!

RE: The omnivore's dilemma - Random Event - 04-23-2020

Ah, so you’ve come back. Little has changed on the outside since the last go around. A lot more ice circles the ceiling of the mine and the slope down upon entry is still quite dark. As you enter this time, the ice begins to shift, the vibration causing a trip within the entrance and the icicles begin to wiggle precariously over your heads. Someone brushes by the wall and a few of the icicles begin to drop.

One of them glances off of Neron, a slight surface wound like a papercut. Another hits Zariah square in the shoulder, the point of it sharp as it buries into her shoulder before falling to the ground.

But now that you’re here, you’ll see two tunnels. The last party that had approached had gone left, over an icy bridge to boxes full of bodies and blood. On the right, a pathway drifts further down and disappears to the left where a thick and cold darkness sets in.

Which path do you choose?

-------

At the bottom of your post please summarize your post and which direction you choose to take. Left or right.

REMINDER: This PQ+’s level is medium-difficult, which means it can/will be dangerous and there is the possibility of permanent harm/death.

Randomly determined post order:
1. Wessex: 160/160
2. Zariah: 200/210
3. Neron: 72/75
4. Morgan: 75/75
5. Loren: 208/208

RE: The omnivore's dilemma - Wessex - 04-23-2020

[say] “Happy to help,”[/say] she replies with a quick half-smile. It’s followed by a surreptitious glance to Morgan atop her unicorn as if to say fucking try to exile me now. Assuming it doesn’t all go downhill quick - which is might, she realizes, once Zariah enters with a petty insult. Privately, the Wraith finds it funny because she once wielded Krosis and knows how heavy it can be.

[say] “Shall we?”[/say] gesturing towards the mine opening, Wessex proceeds down the tunnel into the dark, glancing up as a few icicles begin to drop on them. Great start.

When they arrive at the fork, Wessex turns around and looks at the small group.[say] “In the interest of working together and staying alive, we should know what everyone can do. I can teleport myself and others, replicate Abandoned magic if I’m close enough to the caster, and have a biopulse. So if we get in a fight, give me a wide berth or you’ll be dizzy and unable to fight.”[/say] Glancing to Zariah, the demigod indicates that she should go next. While doing so, Wessex says just to Neron[say] If you’re within 30 feet, you can talk to me like this. And I have an Ascended booster in case you need it.[/say]

Anyway, once that’s done and they all hopefully cooperate in sharing their more important abilities. The Wraith turns to look at their options. One tunnel descends and she wonders who might be able to live down there - if they’re here to deal with cannibals, then... turning, she indicates the left tunnel with a jut of her jaw.[say] “I vote left. Seems like it might be more likely to be cannibals that way.”[/say]
----------

Wessex communicates to everyone some of what she can do and chooses the LEFT tunnel to where the boxes and blood were.

RE: The omnivore's dilemma - Zariah - 04-25-2020

Zariah's lips pressed together in a thin line as the icicle pierced her shoulder. It wasn't a fatal wound by any means but it fucking hurt. Fortunately though, she had been trained to endure far worse pain than that, which was all that saved her from the embarrassment of crying out as she grabbed at her wounded shoulder.

Just a flesh wound. Carry on.

With a nod towards Wessex she followed the Wraith's lead. The direction of supplies was most likely where people were after all. Adventuring down dark winding paths could be saved for a different day.

Zariah goes left!

RE: The omnivore's dilemma - Neron - 04-26-2020

Looking up at the icicles had been a mistake, and Neron swore softly under his breath as one of the sharp points glanced against his cheek, opening a very small cut which wept clear fluid before starting to close. He returned his gaze to Wessex as she spoke and they came upon a fork in the road, unwilling to split the party now or ever. He tried not to jump at the sudden voice in his mind, still unused to such things, though he mastered it enough to nod to the demigoddess, glancing briefly to Zariah to check she was alright.

[say]"I have command over the water, and ice to that effect. Though you have already seen that much,"[/say] he explained to his fellow Ascended. [say]"I can also drain the life force out of living things. So if those cannibals cause problems, I should be able to slow them down. And if we need a distraction, I can make minor illusions."[/say] That should be concise enough. So without further ado, he headed left with the group.

Neron follows suit and goes left.

RE: The omnivore's dilemma - Morgan - 04-26-2020

Morgan followed along into the mine silently, taking Eunike as long as she was able to, though she did jump off the unicorn's back to instead lead it along, staying by the behind of the group. This seemed to serve her well when icicles began to fall and hit others instead of her: while she showed no outward sign of it, it would be false to say she did not take some petty joy in watching the ice's victims be struck.

She did pay particular attention to Wessex's speech, though not necessarily for better co-operation in the mission. Figuring she may as well speak now, knowing she had far less magical ability than the rest of the team, Morgan said: [say]"I have mastered water magic and I have years of survival and battle experience."[/say] Much shorter and she purposefully left out the telekinesis: Zariah knew, but it was good to have something to surprise the rest with, if this ended up with her on the other side of the team.

Not particularly having a care about which way they go and fine for now to follow along with the team, Morgan wordlessly headed with Wessex down the left path.

--
Morgan goes LEFT.

RE: The omnivore's dilemma - Loren - 04-26-2020

As Zariah trotted up (last, he noted with a smirk) Loren just grinned at her. [say]”I thought I’d chop some wood with it, then see where the day takes me.”[/say] His tone was light, trying to break up the obvious tension in the air even though he knew it was a fool’s errand.

As they descended into the mine, things went wrong almost immediately. He was unharmed, but the same couldn’t be said of everyone. Taking the unicorn horn out of his belt, he laid it on Zariah’s uninjured shoulder to heal her of the damage.

After listening to everyone else list out their abilities he spoke quickly and quietly. [say]”Mastered healing, summoning, and water. A few shifts, a few other magics, and some magical items to round it out. Oh and I can compel animals.”[/say] If he listed everything, he’d waste way too much time. Following the rest of the group down the left tunnel, he kept his senses alert for any sign of danger.

Loren heals Zariah with his unicorn horn, and follows the group down the left tunnel.

Type: Light
Unicorn Horn: Imbued with minor healing abilities (upgraded level)

RE: The omnivore's dilemma - Random Event - 04-27-2020

Off to the left, again.

There’s a bridge, covered and coated with ice, fixed upon the top of it with veins that seem to keep it slick and yet… not well pathed. It’s an overpass, though hardly anything is seen in the dark below as you all venture onto it. Once there, you can see through the cracks there’s sharp spikes that appear and jut out of the ground – metallic in nature as if it’s made from scrap metal.

Wessex has no issues getting across, Zariah on the other hand will find as she steps along it that the ice beneath her feet begin to crack, the boards underneath beginning to groan and shift away. At least she’s healed now, thanks to Loren, and should feel somewhat up to par to try and save herself out of this predicament.

Neron, as he steps along the icy bridge with the rest of them will notice his footing a bit slick, and he begins to slide along the ice toward the other side. Morgan will start to spot spiderwebbing beneath her feet as well, though there’s no groaning that accompanies it. Just the loud cracks of ice as it begins to shift and break beneath her feet.

Loren runs into no issues going across either, and when the majority of you all are on the other side, you’ll spot boxes upon boxes stacked up to the left like a refrigerator of sorts. You all will come across many boxes, and if you follow the path there’s the briefest flickering of lights and sounds coming from the end of the trail as it curves off to the right. Do you investigate the boxes or continue down the path?

---------

Zariah and Morgan will fall through the bridge in approx. 2 posts.

Please summarize what your character does at the bottom of the post.

RE: The omnivore's dilemma - Wessex - 04-27-2020

Aight, well at least there’s unity for now. They’re a large enough party that they could split, but maybe it’s safer to stay together. Wessex treads lightly and is able to make it across the bridge, sparing a glance back to see if everyone else makes it too. No one seems to be in immediate danger, so the demigod takes a moment to pause and look at the boxes. There could be something interesting in there, but the frozen nature of it all means there’s nothing to smell.

[say] “Someone want to check these out?”[/say] she offers to no one in particular, as she glances on down the path and notices some faint lights. Thinking, perhaps, that she might have the keenest hearing and sight in the group, the Wraith slips towards the lights and tries to go as far as she can without being seen or noticed. In fact, she goes so far as to call her shadow back to rest at her feet so as not to offer any warning to whomever waits beyond this cavern.

-------------------

Wessex asks if someone wants to check the boxes and then proceeds to investigate the lights further down the path. She tries to go as far as she can while remaining hidden, calling her shadow back to her feet to avoid casting one.

RE: The omnivore's dilemma - Zariah - 04-29-2020

Zariah simply nodded to Loren, lips taut as he healed her shoulder. It hadn't been anything terribly awful, but it would make moving around less cumbersome without injury. But it seemed her luck was not about to change anytime soon.

First the icicle, now the bridge breaking beneath her feet. Fantastic.

Fortunately though, the Merciless was quick and light on her feet. She darted forward, stepping where the bridge seemed most sturdy, spending no more than a few brief seconds in any one spot. If she managed to make it across, the boxes would be of little interest to her. They were here to deal with cannibals, not plunder after all. However, they would provide excellent cover as she would continue to sneak down the path.

Zariah relies on her dexterity to dart forward across the bridge. If she makes it, she will use to boxes as cover to continue to sneak down the path.
