Korbin accepted the seashell from Safrin's hand, and gazed down at it dubiously. This was not exactly how he had expected things to turn out. But then again, this whole encounter was beyond his imagining. Maybe he should just stop having expectations altogether; maybe it would make him feel less bewildered by everything that went on around him.

The young man bowed deeply to the goddess, clutching the shell as though it was his only hope. It wasn't, really. But maybe, in days to come, it might bring him something to hold on to. A last strand of hope, when nothing else remained.
