[RQ] by hand - Remi - 05-15-2020

Honestly, things were off to a reasonably good start, given that Safrin hadn't demanded any strange sacrifices or tasks that would obviously bring harm to the Torchers lending a hand. That wasn't to say that something might still be waiting for them in the wings, but as it was, Remi thought perhaps they all had a chance of getting the canals set up for the mermaids with relatively little effort.

Saying as much to Ronin, and knocking on his husband's head as a stand-in for knocking on wood, they waited for the others to arrive. With no obvious earth-magic wielders (not even Remi, anymore), they'd have to be a bit more creative in their planning. The Alchemist couldn't even make shovels or tools anymore, so he and Ronin had gone round the day before to gather up as many buckets, shovels, ropes, and whatever else they thought they'd need to try and create the general shape of the soon-to-be-canals.

This is the PQ regional quest component.

Open to
1. Remi
2. Melita
3. Nate
4. Zephyr
5. Ronin
6. Sunjata

Remember we need at least 4 rounds, so let's keep things short and snappy ;) Please write your characters arriving!

RE: [RQ] by hand - Melita - 05-15-2020

After Safrin’s proclamation and decision, the rest of Torchline would have to adhere to the necessities and tasks at hand; Melita followed along, eager and ready to assist in whatever what required. She’d long since lost her lengthy dresses, trading them in for some trousers with the coming of winter, she and Fangorn continuing in their bounding, launching, heading towards Remi and the edges of Haulani.

What Melita lacked in magic she made up for in grit, fire, determination, and impetuousness. Somehow the latter still managed to ensure she brought her own bucket of tools, and as she arrived, was content to see that Remi had done the same. [say]“Here to help!”[/say] She called to the Alchemist as the pair arrived, the pumpkin gourd steadily behind her, drawn beside her ankles; a salute maneuvered from her free hand.

RE: [RQ] by hand - Sunjata - 05-15-2020

They’re not far behind Melita and the rest of those that arrive, carrying a few things needed to make the canals. He’s not entirely sure what he’s allowed to help with in the end of it all, but he supposes his shifts might come in handy when things need to be moved. Still, he’s unsure how that might work when it comes to the wound he’s still healing from. There’s a small huff of a sigh with that, imagining it, before he leans toward Nate while they arrive together, going to stand beside Melita as Haai arrives as well, aiming to greet Fangorn first. “[say]If somehow some bats find you, I’ll take care of them.[/say]” He winks, a light smirk crossing his face before he focuses on Ronin and Remi.

Still, he says a quiet hello to Melita in the form of his elbow sneaking out to nudge her a bit childishly, as he pretends to not pay attention, as if it weren’t him, though he can’t help the amused lift of the corner of his lip with it. “[say]Ready as I’ll ever be.[/say]” He offers with a slight nod.

RE: [RQ] by hand - Ronin - 05-15-2020

[say]"Glad to have you."[/say] Ronin grinned from his place beside the Alchemist, seated on one of the large boxes that they'd hauled down to the street containing the tools. The Star was dressed to work, as seemed the case a lot of the time lately, but strangely enough the more he arrived home aching and tired rather than drunk out of his mind, the better he felt. Perhaps it wasn't so strange, on second thought.

Rising to his feet to stretch and offer a nod to both Sunjata and Melita, he glanced around for the rest of their merry little band. Luckily it was Deepfrost, and the sun they would be working under wouldn't be quite so harsh. But that wasn't to say they wouldn't likely work up a sweat, with literal canals to dig.

RE: [RQ] by hand - Zephyr - 05-16-2020

This is a motley crew, if ever you saw one. You arrive with a shovel thrown over your shoulder and a half-eaten apple in your hand, which you'll have bitten down to the barest core by the time the party starts. You've got work pants and a lightweight shirt on, the better to soak up any inevitable sweat. It may be winter, but that isn't saying much in Torchline.

You know all of of 'em, through various avenues, so that's nice at least. Well, except for one, but still better than you generally do. The apple almost down to nothing (told ya), you lean against a tree and wait for direction, ready to get down to physical labor.

RE: [RQ] by hand - Nate - 05-16-2020

Technically, Nate had agreed to this. Hell, it had even been eagerly, the prospect of some hard work for the reward of canals through the streets seeming like a fair trade off, a different way to spend a few days. That had been before Sunjata had taken a knife in the gut though. They're still here though, Nate's arm wrapped around the attuned, as much to give support as it is to keep him from rushing too much. Above his head, just out of reach, if he were to try, Pemota floats, keeping up with them easily.

The distant, placeholder grin on his face fades as they settle near Melita, as Sunjata's words reach him. [say]"My hero."[/say] He murmurs back, lips close enough to the other mans cheek that its practically a kiss, then turns to face Remi, eyes roaming around the crowd, the wealth of people he's seen, but doesn't know.

RE: [RQ] by hand - Remi - 05-21-2020

Grinning at Melita's forethought to bring her own tools, Remi waved a bright hello. Sunjata and Nate's adorable banter also coaxed a grin from the Alchemist, leaving just Zephyr, to whom the governor offered a nod as well.

[say]'Right, well. I'll save lengthy introductions—meet each other if you haven't already."[/say] This was mostly directed to Melita and Zephyr, but it wasn't strictly necessary. Today's work (and likely tomorrow's as well) was all about shovels in the ground. If the group chose to get along, so much the better. [say]"We'll work until lunch, then break for food. With...absolutely no thought to cleverness or skill, I've divided us into groups based on what needs doing."[/say] Waggling his finger around as if this was truly arbitrary (it wasn't), he pointed at Melita, Nate, and Zephyr. [say]"You three. Can you take the wooden stakes and map out where you think the canals should go? So that we aren't digging into root systems from the trees, or sink holes?"[/say]

That of course just left himself, Sunjata, and Ronin. That the implication was that they were the brawn and not the brains, wasn't commented on.

[say]"Right. We'll follow behind and dig where we're told."[/say]

Completely 'randomly', Remi has selected Melita, Zephyr, and Nate to decide where they ought to dig! So these three should post first, marking where Remi/Ronin/Sunjata should dig.

Remi/Ronin/Sunjata will post after.

RE: [RQ] by hand - Zephyr - 05-21-2020

Well aren't you the odd man out in this lovely little family gathering? Which means, of course, none of them are natural Torchers- and that none of them probably know the full extent of the tunnels under the town, and how badly these lovely little canals might fuck them. The last thing you need is the whole damn city to leak down into the Fingers because some mermaids decided it'd be fun to come up and say hi.

So when Remi suggests you (and the rando and Mel) lead the charge of placing the stakes, you can't help but smirk at his comment that it's totally at random. [say]"Aye, cap'n,"[/say] you agree with a sharp salute, grabbing an armful of stakes and looking over your assembled crew. [say]"Aite, follow me you two, I'll show the general area we oughta dig these trenches- y'know, based on an old man's familiarity with the town, an' absolutely nothin' else."[/say]

Winking to Melita, you begin to saunter off, pausing here and there to direct the other two to set out stakes on certain roads or blocks, or to caution them away from a particular building- you know, for reasons

Zeph is concerned for his true love the smuggling tunnels, and so takes charge of Team Stake, attempting to keep them from planning to dig directly into the Fingers.

RE: [RQ] by hand - Melita - 05-21-2020

The residual smirk and grin remained through Remi’s directions, and the subsequent layers of Zephyr’s. She sensed there was a lot more to be said there – but since she had a part in the Ark’s movements and motions, then it likely went without saying. [say]“Sure,”[/say] she laughed, light and airy, following along the older man’s lead, carrying her tools, Fangorn bounding along. Her eyes went to Nate too, ensuring he came right along, instigating a hum under her breath, completely unfussed by whatever means or measures were damned and doomed to come along.

She set out her stakes and blocks along designated pathways, absorbed in the task, though occasionally her eyes flickered along to buildings and walls they were avoiding. These weren’t root systems from trees, though possibly sink holes could be immersed somewhere within. Suspicion notched its way into her brow, but she’d learned over time not to say everything that came into her mind, no matter how tempting.

RE: [RQ] by hand - Nate - 05-21-2020

Nate's happy to settle down as Remi starts speaking, offering a short wave to the one man he didn't actually know, all he was willing to do by way of introduction for the moment. A sharp smirk crossed his face as he was picked out, completely randomly, to be in the first group, his eyes moving to Melita and and the stranger in turn. With only a little bit of reluctance, he removed his arm from around Sunjata and grabbed his own armful of stakes, and a mallet.

[say]"Familiarity is good enough for me."[/say] Nate laughed, wondering what secrets were encompassed in that nothin' else. He could make an educated guess, sure, but it was so much more fun to let his imagination run wild, especially as they began putting stake to ground, avoiding places seemingly arbitrarily. [say]"What d'you think about all this, anyway?"[/say] The question was directed at Zeph as he came back from a side street, Nate interested in the opinion of a local.

Nate is more than happy to defer to Zeph's expertise, and places stakes where directed.

RE: [RQ] by hand - Sunjata - 05-22-2020

If Sunjata slightly nudges his head into Nate’s a bit to make it a true peck of a kiss, he doesn’t admit it. Not as his attention is drawn to the rest of them, waiting for the tasks to be laid out. And when they are, there’s a slight smirk that crosses his face as he focuses on Remi – a quiet hum of a laugh that leaves him, knowing likely the reason for it but not admitting it. So instead, he nods to them in a quiet agreement.

He is reluctant to watch Nate slip away, however, but he focuses his attention on Remi and Ronin. “[say]A shovel is going to probably make me pop a stitch and I’d rather not deal with that whole fucking ordeal. So, you get the trench digging I did for your house.[/say]” He offers with a wink, a huff of a laugh to that, before he’s shifting into his panther form and following the little stakes put into the ground.

Large paws and sharp and strong claws help to try and churn the earth, to try and make it easier to remove with a shovel in breaking up the earth beneath him, and he continues on.

Panther!Jata starts to dig!

RE: [RQ] by hand - Ronin - 05-22-2020

[say]"How generous of you,"[/say] Ronin said to Sunjata, grabbing up a shovel already and nodding at Zeph as he led the little group off to go and place the stakes for the trenches to be dug. Patting Remi on the butt with his shovel before he headed off, Ronin watched as the stakes were places and Jata began to dig.

It would be a long, hard day of graft, but he wasn't a stranger to that, following in Jata's wake to move the dirt and start to form the canals. As the earth began to build up on the banks, he sent his astral projection out to start to move it away, making it easier to keep an eye on what was happening.

Ronin begins to dig, and he sends his astral projection to help move the earth being dug up.

RE: [RQ] by hand - Remi - 05-25-2020

As Zephyr confidently leads the party away from certain locations that probably shouldn't have a canal wooshing through their backyards, a group of rather burly looking men come up to him. "Got a minute, sail'a." One sneers, plucking the cigarette from his mouth and throwing it at Zephyr's feet. "We heard you got yerself a map wot shows the location of a certain sumfin we're int'rested in."

With Nate coming up behind the sailor,

How rude. Some people have no notion of timing. Looks like three thugs want to do business now. What say you, Zeph? As for Nate, will you introde, or go back to flag-duty?

Oh Melita, you beautiful little ball of sunshine. It had to be you, didn't it? Sinkholes indeed. As Fangorn rolls along, the sand beneath his movements gently rolls as if upon the sea. Too quickly to do anything about what this means if she even knows, down into the ground Melita begins to fall. She's already up to her waist before she can do much more than cry out.

Oops! Melita is half-way into a sinkhole!

Sunjata and Ronin(s) make quite the pair as they work away. While they're too far to hear much of what's happening with Nate and Zephyr, should Melita call out, they're the closest to her.

With a grin in Ronin's direction, Remi heads off to investigate some of the businesses as well, for reasons not unlike Zephyr's. While the smuggler might want to keep his operations running (and as far as campaign promises go, Remi is inclined to agree), the Alchemist doesn't want to invite any more trouble than is required.

RE: [RQ] by hand - Melita - 05-25-2020

Content with her work, Melita hardly noticed the movement beneath Fangorn’s motions, and the sand shifting under her, sending her down, down, down, stifled an outcry, sounding more like a gasp as she quickly swallowed up by the earth. There was the sensation of panic that overwhelmed instantly, inclinations and instincts telling her to fight, dragging her arms upward in hopes of grabbing hold of anything. [say]“Fuck!”[/say] she announced instead, striving to cling to any edges at this ridiculous pitfall, uncertain how or why anything had happened. One moment she was helping, and the next, churning down into sinking endeavors.

Fangorn instantly cried out, snarling, sneering, grumbling, and growling, managing to go back and forth between Melita, and attempting to snag anyone else’s attention.

[say]Melita sinks into the hole, attempting to grab anything within reach. Fangorn tries to grab anyone’s attention nearby.[/say]
