[RQ] but a grin without a cat? - Remi - 05-15-2020

Remi had debriefed Delta after the meeting with Safrin, and it had been the explorer who had suggested that she and Maru as well as a mouth breather, might take up this task. With no argument from the Alchemist—who better to deal with animals that mermaids?—he'd agreed to find her an interested mouth breather. Caspian had fit the bill, and so early one morning he and the other man had walked down towards the coast, to meet the merfolk.

[say]"I'm sure you have no need of me getting in your way, so I'll leave you to it."[/say] Remi said with a nod to the trio.

This is a regional quest component, to try and tend to the local wildlife that might be affected by the new canals! Open to Delta, Maru, and Caspian.

Remember, you need 4 posts each trying to ensure that the native animal population won't be terribly hindered by the addition of the canals.

RE: [RQ] but a grin without a cat? - Delta - 05-15-2020

When Remi had approached her concerning actual business, Delta was absolutely ecstatic! Before even knowing what the task was, she was extremely happy to know that Remi had considered her for something super important and official! And then she found what it was for? And holyfuckholyfuckholyfuck. Safe to say, Delta was very very very happy about this canal business. Of course, she knew that she had to include her father, Maru, seeing as he was kinda the leader. It made sense he help out as much as possible with the canal business.

Then, of course, Delta knew that she had to include a mouthbreather (human for those who don't know) because... yeah. Ya know, it's his land and all and he better know all about the animals otherwise there would be consequences blah blah. All joking aside, Delta wanted someone who she could trust and was more than happy to find out an Attuned would be the one chosen to come and help. It would hopefully mean that they could get real progress done while also ensuring the safety of the animals. She had quite a lot of opinions, but she would have to save them for Remi to make sure he enforced them. For now? Time to try and make sure the animals were safe!

Glancing over to her father, Delta chose to speak first, hoping that he would be able to add in his opinion. [say]"I think we should first check on the animals that would be impacted by the actual construction of the canals- so ones that live super close to the surface and along the areas that will probably be dug up to build the canals."[/say]

RE: [RQ] but a grin without a cat? - Maru - 05-15-2020

The man who had first approached them beneath the waves had been cordial and charming, and mentions of the canals alone would have summoned Maru. Alas, it seems his daughter has a thumb in the pulse of the interactions of the humans above their waters, and her encouragement had been the final nail in securing the Luminary's presence for this particular venture.

Remi is given a tilt of the head and a dark, charming smile before he summarily departs. Long, inky black hair clinging to broad shoulders as he surfaces, tentacles spreading out luxuriously beneath the water, capable of moving closer than Delta's form allows. [Say]"And those who live amongst the corals, any that will need to be transplanted by hand."[/say] Not all were capable of being encouraged or frightened away from their feeding and breeding grounds after all. Some were far slower and more firmly rooted to this land. [Say]"We can usher them to deeper waters, but we will need a way to physically keep them away from the construction zone."[/say] A wall of some sort perhaps? Otherwise he and Delta would be zipping about trying to keep them away, which would do little more than exhaust them.

RE: [RQ] but a grin without a cat? - Caspian - 05-21-2020

It would have been wrong to say that he wasn't wary of working with merfolk. Look, he was a pirate and that meant he was wary of everyone. But this had to be done and he could easily keep an eye out on things from above if need be. So when he was approached by Remi he accepted it and moved on with everything. It wasn't that he didn't trust people...actually you know it was that he didn't trust anyone but his own crew. And half the time he was pretty sure at least one of them was planning something.

He went though to meet and listened to them. They couldn't rush back and around to keep the creatures away. That would be exhausting. [say]"I know it may not be the best but for a temporary solution my ship has nets. It creates a barrier till we can find a better solution."[/say] He didn't want to capture anything. It was just a way to maybe get the creatures to see it wasn't safe yet for them. [say]"Is there a place they can be relocated to? Even the coral if it can happen.[/say]

RE: [RQ] but a grin without a cat? - Delta - 05-21-2020

The attuned appeared and Delta offered him a small smile, noticing that he wasn't exactly all that excited to see them. Maybe he was just super good at hiding his emotions, but it kinda seemed like he didn't want to be there or something. Then he had an idea. [say]"So long as we are able to clean up after them and make sure it doesn't hurt them.... I think it could serve as a suitable wall."[/say] Her eyes looked over at Maru, clearly hoping he'd give a nod of confirmation.

Focusing her attention back on the attuned she let out a hum of thought. [say]"Well... we haven't had any reason to test it, but we can only hope for the best. Lots of other animals live within the coral too, so maybe my father and I can try to talk with them."[/say] Honestly, Delta has never really tried to talk with the sea creatures around her, so she wasn't sure if it was something she could even do. [say]"The coral can be moved to other parts of the reef. We wont have to move all of it, just the parts that are dug up."[/say] Then she finally turned her attention to her father. [say]"What tasks would you like for me and him to do?"[/say]

RE: [RQ] but a grin without a cat? - Maru - 05-27-2020

Maru considers the nets. Smaller creatures will get through, but the shifting sediment should scare them back through the holes all things considered. Nodding decisively, he moves back into the deeper part of the shallows, ringed tentacles growing vague and indiscernible as light silt is kicked up with each pulse of movement. [say]"A fine idea, thank you sir. If you could bring them so we may ensure they are properly stretched to the bottom?"[/say] Already they cannot continue without aid from one another. Landwalker and mermaid, united in the oddest of ways.

Delta is quite the avid talker in comparison to her more reticent father, but he pulls at the wetted locks of his hair, flinging it over to one shoulder as he peers down through the waters at the coral below. [say]"If it is all the same to you, I would volunteer for the coral. I have a steady hand."[/say] And, if the man would agree, Maru will descend back into the depths to begin gently scooping individual blooms and creatures away from their home, transporting them off to the side so they may stay at the same depth and temperature.

RE: [RQ] but a grin without a cat? - Seren - 06-14-2020

Seren had absolutely been following Remi ever since he left home that morning. She was practicing her sneaking skills, for one - and was doing a really good job of it, if she could say so herself - but more importantly, things were happening all over Haulani, and she had not been invited to help.

Oversight on the part of the grownups, no doubt. So she was inviting herself, and lurked in the shadows until Remi had left for some other Very Important Task. Seeing the merpeople was very exciting, and upon realizing that she already knew Delta, the girl did not hesitate to launch straight into the job. When Caspian went off to find nets, Seren slipped off to do the same, and came back all innocense and sunshine, carrying the carefully folded bundle of nets she had 'borrowed' from an unknowing fisherman.

[say]"I can help too,"[/say] she said, in way of greeting, and smiled widely at Delta, and a bit more shyly at the dark-haired man. Seren had grown since last she saw the mermaid on the docks, but the blue eyes and eager air was the same. [say]"Is this net okay?"[/say]

Not quite knowing what she was doing, the girl started to spread it out, and did her best to secure it with knots in appropriate places. Her grasp on what they were attempting to accomplish was tenuous at best, but it involved merfolk and animals, and therefore she was obviously going to do great.

RE: [RQ] but a grin without a cat? - Delta - 06-17-2020

The odd human drifted off, leaving behind just her and Maru... until Seren showed up! Eyes widening, Delta looked at the girl with a new grin on her face. Rather than immediately saying hello, Delta chose to wait until she knew for sure that her father was finished speaking.

A smile and a nod is offered to Seren. [say]"That net is perfect, thank you,"[/say] And off she went, diving down into the water and grasping onto the end of the net. Carefully, she started to work on securing the net, making sure that it wasn't damaging anything around it. It'd give them a good idea of what needed to be moved... hopefully.

Hopefully she was doing this right because man was she confused (and also maybe the poster is super tired and not feeling great and is just replying so this thread can move on).

RE: [RQ] but a grin without a cat? - Maru - 06-26-2020

Maru does not comment upon a small child joining them in their efforts. His disapproval means nothing in the grand scheme of things, and as the other man does not return it's not as if they're left with plentiful land walkers to assist beyond the reaches of the ocean. Instead he leaves Delta to her conversational perks, being a more reticent man himself, and continues to gently unearth the coral in the way of the netted zone and where the canal will begin.

It's a slow process, and he isn't capable of speaking to those above shore while he works in the water. Not that Maru is much complaining, as the work itself is peaceful and the repetitive motions soothing. He can only hope the coral will acclimate properly where he moves them, keeping them to their original shelf, depth, and sunlight amount as much as possible.

RE: [RQ] but a grin without a cat? - Seren - 06-26-2020

Seren smiled happily as her help was accepted. When the net was tied in place, the looked around to see what else she could do. There were more than water creatures that would be troubled by the new waterways, and the girl soon spotted several birds nests on top of nearby houses.

[say]"I will go save the birdies,"[/say] she told Delta cheerfully, and promptly started to climb. From crates to rooftops, Seren delighted in the view from the high places and cooed soothingly to the angry parent birds - hels, probably - as she carefully dislodged the nests. Moving them safely to other houses not in danger of being torn down was tricky, but she was in no hurry and took her time.

RE: [RQ] but a grin without a cat? - Delta - 06-29-2020

The animals around her take a bit to move. Whilst her father is moving the coral, a few of the fish come swimming around, departing from the depths and trying to find a new place to hide.

Remaining very calm, Delta takes the time to show the fish that she is no threat and allows them to calm down. The net up certainly helps, preventing any fish from swimming into the area that the canal will be connecting to.

With the fish relaxed in this area she moves on, swimming towards some of the other areas. It takes a bit, but she manages to find the animals their brand new homes. Some of the animals area bit more stubborn and she has to swim backwards to help them out, but over time the animals are relocated into their new homes.

RE: [RQ] but a grin without a cat? - Maru - 07-01-2020

There is only so much even Maru's gentle hands can achieve. The coral is as fully moved as he can manage. There will always be some sort of loss in such large changes to oceanic life like this, and he is aware of that. Though they've done all they can, it will aid his people over time, and a little bit of sacrifice will lead to adaptation over time.

Resurfacing once his task is done - and checking the nets as he goes, waving his tentacles at any fish reluctant to move away from the exciting new object - he glances around for his companions in this effort. [Say]"I've moved all I can."[/say] Awaiting their own status updates, hoping they will soon be done.

RE: [RQ] but a grin without a cat? - Seren - 07-01-2020

When she could find no more Hel nests, Seren went on to ensure that no other animals would be harmed by the canals. Scurrying in and out of the buildings, she found a stray dog, two cats and caught a glimpse of the tail end of what might have been a wyrm, but did not have any real problems until she came upon The Crab.

It was big. It was black. It had absolutely no desire to be dislodged from the tangled pile of nets it had settled upon, and Seren's attempts to catch hold of it resulted in two pinched fingers, a stubbed toe and much frustration.

[say]"Come come, the sea is a much nicer place,"[/say] she weedled, trying to coax the crab down with a crumbled biscuit from her pocket. It glared at her, flexing the massive claws dubiously... Then it slowly started towards her. Quickly as she could, Seren pounced, managing to get her hands past the claws to grab the shell.

When she returned to the waters edge and the waiting mers, it was with her short arms full of the monster, almost as big as herself. The girl was huffing and struggling, but beaming with pride. [say]"Look what I found!"[/say]

RE: [RQ] but a grin without a cat? - Delta - 07-02-2020

Delta had absolutely no clue what on earth Seren was doing, but she had full faith in the tiny child. Surely, she'd be doing the absolutely right thing in this very moment! Meanwhile, she and her father were silently on their own specified tasks. While Delta might've wanted to deal with the coral, she knew that her father was probably the best person to take that task on. He had very gentle hands and was a very skilled individual, surely he'd be able to get the task done without any problem.

Soon, even she finished and Delta resurfaced only to see Seren carrying an absolutely massive creature- or massive compared to her. [say]"What a- fantastic find! Go ahead and set him down. We will make sure he makes it safely."[/say] Because fuck was that a giant crab! Seren absolutely didn't need to hear such naughty words, so Delta held herself back from saying anything too bad.
