Duuun dun...

Duuun dun...

Dun dun dun dun dun dun...!

That's right, folks: it's shark week. More accurately, pre-hibernation-for-winter-when-you're-a-landshark week. And boy oh boy are they out in force, a whole school circling around a luxere doe and her fawn. The doe already has a gash on her side where a particularly brazen shark struck, though she still stands with no small amount of effort, her fawn tucked at her side.

And around her? There are landsharks of various size, their dorsal fins cutting through the ground. You can see them as you approach, one cresting above the frozen earth enough to show it's about four feet long, another small shadow about two feet, the others too obscured to see. They rise and drop so it's hard to get a confident count (Five? Six? Seven? You aren't really sure), and they've made a tightening circle around the pair.

It's nature at work, lads and lasses, but it still hurts to watch. What're you gonna do?

RE: -insert jaws theme here- - Amun - 05-21-2020

The commotion at the Outskirts drew Amun's attention. Already wearing a cloak, he drew the hood up to obscure his features. Checking to make sure his sword and knives were secure, he approached cautiously.

Eyes narrowing as he watched the landsharks (which until now he would've sworn were myths) circling the luxere. There didn't seem to be anything they could do for the poor deer. It would be merciful to give them a nice, clean death. However, he didn't particularly want to approach, having seen his fair share of feeding frenzies.

So, bending down, he lifted a nearby rock. Tossing it in his palm a few times to get the feel for it, he eventually hefted it up. Then he tossed it at the mama, trying to brain her and knock her out, or at least down where the sharks could get her.

Amun shows up in a cloak and chucks a rock at the mother luxere.

RE: -insert jaws theme here- - Deimos - 05-22-2020

Deimos had experience with landsharks.

And though it meant he’d acquired Zuriel in the process, the events unfolding beforehand hadn’t been very pleasant.

Ordinarily, he might not have even bothered. He was already a predator in the ongoing circle of life, understood beings needed to hunt, and prey had means to defend themselves. It was a cycle, age-old, primordial, and calculated through survival of the fittest.

But he also had a protective, guarding, irreverent streak far greater than necessary, and so he proceeded at the first signs of fins circling the grounds, his unicorn pressed nearby. Zuriel’s trials and tribulations with the aforementioned animals were clear as day, and even more unpleasant than the Sword’s. She remained close, but not gliding through as he did, his eagle eyes going briefly to Amun, barely noticing the rock intending to sail.

Instead, he concentrated his efforts on the landsharks below, compelling more raptors, more birds of prey, intending for them to seethe and assail, to distract and deter, to fly overhead and make quick escapes, evasions, while he watched and witnessed from above; pondering when it would be best for him to unfurl and strike too.

RE: -insert jaws theme here- - Osozo - 05-22-2020

It feels lucky that they’re not already in Torchline by this point. If they were, they could have missed this whole experience, could have gone a months without seeing a landshark. Osozo approaches, close as they dare, which still leaves several meters of room between them and the sharks, and peers at them, the luxere pair.

At first, they are content to let nature take its course, but it begins to feel excessive, as they become aware of more and more shadows. And they are not the only one to notice the commotion, two people they don’t recognize already on the scene. A decision is quickly made to help, in whatever capacity they could.

The rock is a good idea, the Demi-god giving the benefit of the doubt to the cloaked stranger and assuming they simply missed, striking the luxere by accident. A fist sized stone is scavenged from the ground, and heaved towards the landshark closest to the duo, hoping to distract it somehow, or at least pull its attention away.

RE: -insert jaws theme here- - Aisha - 05-22-2020

Aisha had been roaming the outskirts on a hunt today, in her dappled skin and raptorial claws. The commotion was not lost to her, ears perked and tail flicking anxiously at the noise. Curiosity pulled her towards it, beaconed in by the excitement.

When she arrived on the scene she shifted back, coming to stand near Deimos and watch with furrowed brows as the events unfolded. A pair of luxere, a mother and her fawn, pitifully encircled by a ruckus of trembling earth. Upon further scrutiny she found the cause of the torrent, dorsal fins ripping through the ground and circling around them. She'd never run into these creatures before, but had read about them.

A storm of birds had begun to rain down on them, via Deimos's command she assumed, and the others gathered had begun to throw rocks. Aisha wasn't sure what course of action to take, part of her favoring the sharks, the predators following their instincts. The other part didn't want to see the beautiful creatures ripped to shreds.

So for now she stood back, taking no initiative against the creatures but watching tensely, prepared to if anything should change.

Aisha arrives but doesn't engage yet, instead she watches and stays prepared to if need be.

RE: -insert jaws theme here- - Amalia - 05-23-2020

The circle of life continues.

Once not long ago Amalia would have done everything she could to maximize the protection of life. She would have interrupted the feeding and attempted to save both landsharks and luxere.  Glancing up at the familiar eagle who circles overhead, Amalia sighs and rubs her wrist. [say]"They need to eat... to feed their own,"[/say] she murmurs, knowing he has no love for the creatures. But now as she stands on the outskirts of the gathering, a cloak pulled around her shoulders, Amalia finds she cannot blame the landsharks for their feast. Rae designed nature to be built in a circle, death to feed life and life to feed the future.

Who is she to interrupt what is natural and right?

Still, the Shield cannot stand idle. She will not step in to prevent the death, but it doesn't mean she'll support prolonged suffering, that she won't do everything she can to make this as quick a carnage as possible. Reaching out with her internal voice, the girl attempts to compel the landsharks to take the doe and leave, allowing the fawn a chance at life while finding food for themselves.

Amalia attempts to compel the landsharks to take the doe and leave the fawn

RE: -insert jaws theme here- - Random Event - 05-24-2020

Well, what a jumbled up mess of players we are.

The landsharks seem content to ignore the interlopers. They're hungry, and know that humans (especially a herd of them) tend to make poor meals. So they leave you alone... that is, until you decide to interfere in the feast. Amun's rock sails over the fins that bob above the surface of the earth, sailing clear toward the luxere doe... and past her head, to the ground on the other side.

Deimos' compelled birds have more success, though their targets seem smart enough to figure out why they're being attacked. The hawks divide, four attacking shark #3 - one of the smallest - and tearing in through its sandpaper skin, screeching their success as they yank it into the air and carry it back to their nest. The other two are bolder, attacking one of the larger sharks, #5. They manage to tear through the tough skin, but the creature retaliates swiftly, taking a mouthful of shrieking fowl before vanishing into the ground. Deimos is not bitten bc I can't read.

Osozo is better with rocks than Amun, beaming shark #1 squarely in the eye. Rood. It, too, vanishes under the ground, only to emerge a moment later and fucking mangle the demigod's right leg before disappearing again.

Aisha and Amalia are left alone, though the sharks seem to heed the Shield's message. The two not distracted by humans or dead circle and bite at the larger luxere, leaving the fawn alone. The doe screams in anguish as her legs are snapped and broken, blood staining the snow around her red while the fawn curls up in terror.

RE: -insert jaws theme here- - Deimos - 05-25-2020

Something in the back of his mind irked, irritated, a spike of exasperation when combined efforts weren’t so collaborative at all. There was no saving the mother now, and a portion of him wondered if they’d simply prolonged the fate of the child too – an inevitable succumbing to slaughter, to condemnation, likely incapable of surviving without its parent’s support.

He wondered why he was even here, if efforts were to be so ridiculously in vain.

A reminder, perhaps, for all he was, it was never quite enough.

The birds he summoned did their part though, with great relish, talons sinking into flesh, taking and rendering it for themselves, and he cawed an acknowledgment before one of their own was snagged too. A click of his beak, a rush of frustration once more.

Then, of course, there was everyone else involved.

Sharp, eagle eyes noted the unfortunate mangling of Osozo, and though he had no recollection or idea as to who the stranger was, he’d been in the same position. Limbs torn, fighting an onslaught too great or too grand. He rushed down, swift descents, landing beside Amalia and Aisha, human all over again, but his attention contorted towards the Ascended. [say]“Zuriel can heal you,”[/say] he offered and extended, and if they could somehow make it over to the unicorn (who was tucked along the edges, intention clearly not to get any closer), then the mending provisions would remain available.

In his stead though, with the doe clearly heading for the disaster, his gaze went to the fawn. He saw the terror, understood the rationale of fear, and summoned water contortions, turning and churning them into glacial wares. Intentions were manifested in guarding tactics, attempting to manifest an ice shield around the fawn. Maybe it would protect, and he’d feel like he did something other than watch fate play out its hand.

RE: -insert jaws theme here- - Amun - 05-25-2020

As the shark bit down on Osozo’s leg, Amun gritted his teeth. Dashing over to the demi-god, the potter took in the damage as best he could. [say]"Get out of here. We'll handle this."[/say] However, he was almost certain they would refuse to heed that.

So he reached out to physically pick them up. Holding them carefully in a bridal carry, he would try to keep them off the ground and out of the landsharks clutches.

Regardless of whether he was successful or not, he'd call out to the rest of the group. [say]"The fawn isn't going to survive without the doe, and it'll die much more slowly and painfully. Just let the landsharks have both of them, and make it quick."[/say] Maybe someone here would listen to him.

If Osozo doesn't leave, Amun will try to physically lift them off the ground.

RE: -insert jaws theme here- - Aisha - 05-25-2020

What a complicated situation she'd come to, what a strange beacon to draw such a group of people. Her moment of lingering back ceased when one of their own was injured, she watched in horror as Osozo's leg was ripped, mangled, a sharp gasp sucking between her teeth at the gruesome sight. And no more gruesome than what the sharks have done to the doe, the sickening snap of bone and ligament resounding in her head, taunting and jeering.

There were many times when Aisha would've sided with the predators. She was one herself, and knew the cycle of life in all its benevolent cruelty. But this, this was unfair, and with so much carnage in their future yet to come, couldn't they spare these deer today? She, as the others stepped towards Osozo, there to aid if need be, but kept her eyes on the swarm before them. The potter, she recognized him from their prior meeting, suggested a swift death to the pair of them.

Aisha stubbornly ignored, instead reaching for a stone and lobbing it at one of the predators closest to the doe. Her heart went out to the mother, almost more than the fawn. How much had she survived already, only to die before her child? She let her other hand hover by the sword at her side drawing it in case one of the sharks decided she was their next target.

Aisha goes near Osozo and throws a stone at the shark closest to the doe, then draws her sword hoping to counter any that should target the group.

RE: -insert jaws theme here- - Amalia - 05-25-2020

The sharks retaliate as might have been anticipated, causing Amalia to wince and gasp as one rises up to bite a stranger. Luckily Amun and Deimos respond before the Shield has a chance, the former sweeping up the invalid and the latter offering healing via Zuriel. [say]"Are they okay?"[/say] Amalia asks, looking at her friend with a troubled expression.

Another rock flies through the air, and a wall of ice surrounds the fawn, and the chaos continues. Attempting to step in front of Aisha and prevent any injury to the other woman, Amalia reaches out for her sword arm. [say]"Amun's right- the doe isn't going to live. But the fawn might, if the sharks are satisfied."[/say]

Silently, she calls out to the landsharks through the Attuned bond. [say]Please- take your meal and go. We won't hurt you further.[/say]

Amalia tries to place herself in line of any attacks to Aisha/stop her from attacking, and uses her Attuned abilities to ask the landsharks, again, to take their meal and go

RE: -insert jaws theme here- - Osozo - 05-25-2020

There is a moment of elation, both Osozo's arms coming up in triumph, in victory, as they struck the landshark, sending it beneath the crust of the ground again.

It is a short lived celebration.

There is something so strange, feeling but not feeling, systems screaming in their head when they are attacked. Their leg is ruined, can't hold the weight of their body, and all they can do is laugh, and stare, the colour bleeding out of their hair until it's a shock of white. Luckily, others have more rational reactions, the cloaked stranger, Amun, they finally realize, coming over and lifting them, Osozo's arms looping around his neck. [say]"I'm not leaving."[/say] They protest, a bubble of hilarity still threatening to burst out of them, gesturing to the unicorn, the permission already given to entreat it for healing.

Assuming Amun brought them closer, that the unicorn, Zuriel, would heal them, Osozo would stay close to the group, wary of moving away again. [say]"Is... there a way to bring the little one closer?"[/say] They suggest, looking to those with more useful magics than them.

Osozo accepts the healing and refuses to leave, but suggests they bring the faun closer if possible

RE: -insert jaws theme here- - Random Event - 05-26-2020

Oh, sweetlings. So noble. So weirdly invested in the eating habits of entirely unrelated creatures.

At least you decide to leave nature alone. Well, most of you. Sort of. Except for Deimos, who covers the fawn in ice as though that would stop attacks from underground, and Aisha, who tosses a last rock, hitting the largest landshark.

Oops.

Good thing Amalia stepped in to take the damage. What might have been over half of Aisha's health is merely a scratch for the sturdy Shield, barely breaking through the skin of her ankles.

At least Osozo is looking better, Amun's rescuing and Zuriel's healing having set them rather right again.

And then there is the luxere. With almost no distraction from the humans the sharks now attack in earnest, and are easily able to bring down the doe. The last one - the large one that bit Amalia - lands the final blow, grabbing the large luxere and dragging it below the ground.

The earth is still, and only the luxere fawn remains, shielded by ice.

What will you do?

RE: -insert jaws theme here- - Amun - 05-26-2020

Thankfully, Amun's rescue efforts with Osozo go exactly as planned. Grunting a bit with their weight, the potter narrowed his eyes as the doe was taken down. Glancing at Amalia, the Ascended pressed his lips together. [say]"Seriously. Stop attacking the sharks. The fawn can't survive without its mother. It would be a mercy to let the sharks take it. I'll make it so the fawn doesn't feel pain. Lower the ice please."[/say]

With that, he awkwardly tried to get closer to the feeding sharks and the remaining doe. Firing off a flash bang, he tried to catch just the luxere in the blast and not any of the sharks, which would hopefully be shielded by the fact that they were, well, underground. Of course, the fact that he was still carrying the demi-god made this more than a bit awkward.
