(SE) one wrong turn after another - Wessex - 09-28-2020

From the Citadel to the Sea of Glass to the Crust, then they finally make their way here. Wherever here is. How did the two sick ones make it down there without falling into some lava or encountering a fyrhund, a lial, or worse - whatever worse could be.

What stops Wessex is the sound of running water; a sound that chills her to the bone, sends her rigid and grabbing for Loren. No, not running, pounding, crashing, roaring water. How could there be that much water? In one place? That isn’t the ocean? And why does it sound so fierce?

[say] “Is it coming for us?”[/say] she whispers into the dark, perhaps asking Loren - or perhaps someone else?

RE: (SE) one wrong turn after another - Loren - 09-28-2020

At some point during the jumps, Loren had shifted. He felt safer in this form, with its claws and its teeth and its special pretty shiny fur. Feeling disoriented from all the jumping around, he turned in a circle, like a dog chasing its tail.

There was no sign of Astra, and their surroundings were unfamiliar to him. Only when Wessex spoke did he register the noise. Growling at the sound, his claws dug into the ground.

Backing away, tail swishing through the air, he stared into distance where the water seemed to be. His ears flicked towards it and he shook out his mane.

Which was when the rats struck.

Wessex had been right, they'd been lucky to avoid some of the more dangerous fauna of the Climb. But they hadn't gone entirely undetected: a group of Blind Swamp Rats had been alerted by their appearance and their movements. They swarmed towards the healer, but their teeth and claws couldn't pierce his skin. He snarled and swatted at him, but they were too fast and there were too many of them to get a hit in. Plus he was super sick, of course.

RE: (SE) one wrong turn after another - Wessex - 09-29-2020

Some of the Blind Swamp Rats drift Wessex’s way, crowding around the demigod’s legs, causing her to hiss and bare her fangs. Each bite, however, delivers pain back to the perpetrators, their squeaks of alarm an odd contrast to Loren’s snarls - and yet musical defeat to the Queen’s ears. She begin to hop around as best she can whilst trying to shake them off and between the Wraith’s intentional and unintentional efforts, they soon abandon their non-organic target and head for the lion, an easier, tastier target. Ah, but now that she’s got them on the run, Wessex doesn’t want to give up pursuit.

Without warning, she whirls around and lets loose a biopulse, hoping that it will be powerful enough to raze the smaller Rats to the ground. Mercilessly wipe them out, destroy their brains, or whatever it is that a biopulse might do to small critters. And the Firebrand? Hopefully he can withstand it too.

RE: (SE) one wrong turn after another - Loren - 09-29-2020

Unable to help Wessex while he was dealing with his own attack, Loren continued to swat and claw at the rats. He got lucky, once, slamming a paw against one and sending it flying into the wall of the cavern with bloody furrows carved into its side. It squeaked as it hit, then lay still.

As the rest of the swarm returned from bothering the demi-god, though, the lion found himself overwhelmed. And unfortunately, while he'd survive much better than the rats would, he had no defenses from the biopulse. It caused him to collapse, body twitching, as his nervous system spasmed.

He snarled as best he could, writhing on the ground. All around him, the rats did the same, though they didn't move for long, especially the ones who'd already sustained injuries from the Wraith's backlash upgrade.

RE: (SE) one wrong turn after another - Wessex - 09-29-2020

Oops.

The Wraith knows she’s done something wrong, knows that the twitching lion is not a good thing, but doesn’t know how she can help. Her hands fly to her face, comedically distraught as she just stands and watches her companion lay there, whispered, rapid[say] “Sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry”[/say] coming out of her mouth over and over again. Gingerly reaching out to pet the lion, she tries to awkwardly soothe it until she just gives up and scoots back.

Oh, this is not a good place. This is not a good place at all. Between the water and the hurt she’s just caused, Wessex is almost ready to bail. But as she backs up against the stone wall, it triggers something in her - a memory. Distant, yet recent, the flimsy words of something they were supposed to do while down here. What is it, what is it? There was an ours thing?

RE: (SE) one wrong turn after another - Loren - 09-29-2020

Feeling and control began returning to Loren's extremities. As Wessex apologized and stroked his fur he made a whining sound in the back of his throat. It morphed into a snarl as he saw some of the rodents stirring. Lashing out with his mind, he compelled them to back the fuck off.

Which they did, the few that were still alive staggering away down the tunnel they'd come from. It took him a few abortive attempts to stand. After he did, he wove a staggering few steps towards the pounding sound of the waterfall.

He stopped when he actually saw the water. Growling at it, he flexed his paws. Glancing at the Wraith, he started carving letters into the rock, his fevered mind forcing him to do so.

[say]NETL[/say] they said. Chuffing, he stared at the letters, then added an extra line. [say]METL[/say] Close enough: he settled down to the ground with a yawn.

RE: (SE) one wrong turn after another - Random Event - 09-30-2020

So shimmery, this waterfall. Such shiny, pretty water. A sparkling, roaring mouth out of which pours pure liquid diamond, splashing into a gorgeous pool below.

Except the water is not the only thing shimmering. No, there’s definitely something behind the waterfall that the duo can see. A structure of some kind. How bizarre. What could be hidden back there?

RE: (SE) one wrong turn after another - Wessex - 09-30-2020

[say] “Net..l?”[/say] Wessex sounds out as lion!Loren carves the letters into the rock. Nettles? She shakes her head. Nettles couldn’t grow down here. Even with the water -[say] “There’s no place for them to -”[/say] Oh, OKAY that makes more sense.[say] “Metal!”[/say] she shouts, jumping up and clapping her hands. Yes! They had a thing with the metal.

Immediately, she begins to swing her head back and forth, frantically searching the ‘area’ around her for said metal. But of course, there isn’t anything. No metal, just rock. Black, boring rock - not like the shiny thing they pulled from Tanau. Something glistening does catch her eye, however, as the water (ugh) glistens where it falls. In the uneven fall of the water, her Ascended-eyes can see… something that is different back there.

[say] “Look,”[/say] the Wraith says, hitting lion!Loren to get his attention.[say] “There’s something. I’m gonna go.”[/say] Moving around so she can hopefully get a better look of the space behind the waterfall, Wessex waits until she can get a better view and then excitement and curiosity cause her to teleport just herself to whatever is there.

RE: (SE) one wrong turn after another - Loren - 09-30-2020

When Wessex brought up the plants, Loren looked around for them, growling low in his throat. Nettles were a pain in the ass, though he might be protected from them in this form. Of course, he glanced at her when she mentioned metal, and let his tongue loll out, more doglike than catlike in that moment.

Peering at the water, he snarled. He padded forward, though he flinched as an errant bit of spray got too close. Swatting at it, he backed up. But there was something that caught his eye behind the waterfall, something beautiful and shiny that called to him. He had to get there, but there was no way through what with the barrier of the falls.

When the Wraith disappeared close to the water, however, the lion whined. Clawing at the ground, he glared daggers at the falling liquid. Then he bared his teeth at it, assuming that it and the thing behind it had kidnapped the demi-goddess when she was just trying to find the pretty, pretty metal.

So, gathering his legs beneath him, he steeled his nerves. Then he pounced, trying to rescue Wessex from the clutches of the waterfall and land behind it with the minimum amount of contact with the hated element.

RE: (SE) one wrong turn after another - Random Event - 09-30-2020

It’s an archway.

Wet marble bejewelled by water, it stretches up and up and over in a perfect arc. Nothing in front of it but waterfall. Nothing behind it but sheer stone.

And what pretty little hollows have been carved into it.

10 pretty little hollows, large enough to hold something. Whatever could they be for?

And beneath the archway? A platform, where something (or someone) might stand.

RE: (SE) one wrong turn after another - Wessex - 09-30-2020

An archway? Archways are for passing through. She’s looking at it when the wet cat passes through, though looking is only the half of it. First she uses her illusion upgrade to see if there is more to this than meets the eye, then she uses the text upgrade, to see if there’s anything written there that she might not be able to see with just her eyes.

A hand feels each groove, reveling in the tactile smoothness of the marble, how cool it feels down here, kept cold by Halo’s glacier water. [say] “So coooooool,”[/say] she sighs, the kind of sigh you deliver post-orgasm. You know what would be nice? If she laid down on it. So she does, crawling on to the platform to press as much of herself against it as possible, like a dog on the bathroom floor in the middle of Longheat.

--------------------
Wessex uses:
Type: Grey
Optical Upgrade | Can see through god-created illusions such as the barrier around the Hollowed Grounds.

Type: Grey
Optical Upgrade: Can translate written words regardless of the language. Eyes glow blue when in use. (OOC: Will translate two plot-related text per season.)

RE: (SE) one wrong turn after another - Loren - 09-30-2020

The cat was indeed very wet and very unhappy about it. Whining, Loren shook out his fur, trying to get as much moisture out of it as possible. Chuffing out a breath in response to Wessex's comment, the healer finally took a look around the little alcove and archway they'd found.

Rearing up on his hind legs, he stuck his mouth near one of the holes. He pulled in air through his mouth and the sacs on the top of his mouth, trying to scent to see if there was anything there. As the Wraith crawled forward, though, he dropped down and bounded forward, trying to squeeze in next to her. She wouldn't leave him behind so easily this time. The marble was nice and cool and he found himself yawning, eyes growing half-lidded.

RE: (SE) one wrong turn after another - Random Event - 10-01-2020

No illusions to see here, Ascended. And nothing to scent here either, kitty. Just cool stone and wet water. The platform is comfy enough as well, yes, but... that’s about it.

Oh, but when Wessex really looks, it’s like hidden engravings leap into view, arranging themselves into letters she can translate:

Translation DM’ed to Astor.

The rest is illegible.

RE: (SE) one wrong turn after another - Wessex - 10-02-2020

She makes room for the lion, one hand absently patting him while the other points up, her eyes following as she stares silently at the carvings. One finger seems to trace something in the air - hallucination or real, who can know? Can she even trust what she sees? It swims in front of her, becomes coherent, and she inhales with a low[say] “Oooooh…”[/say] Sitting up, the Wraith keeps her eyes trained on the words - then stands - and nothing changes.

Her arm remains lifted and it’s like she can touch them, her arm elongating until it is unnatural and she is entirely a robot. Entirely the un-original Wessex. She’s come so far, hasn’t she, from hunter and part-time hired blade to demigod and Queen twice over, standing under this marble arch. Even with the water nearby her gaze is full of awe as something about this place’s purpose registers with her.

[say] “I have to show Magrethe this…”[/say]
