the other side of paradise - Azrael - 02-03-2021

They may be young but they hold an architect’s mind. They know how to build things and fix things, and it’s this that brings them with a lot of different tools and materials in carts, sat outside the barracks that they’d heard from Wessex needed to be fortified against the monsters. They hoped that perhaps having someone arrive with experience for LongNight would make it easier for them to figure out how they should fortify it.

They haven’t experienced it, really, so they’re a bit at a loss of where to even start. So they’ve brought everything they think they might need, they’ve put up a notice on the notice board asking for help for building and fixing, there to offer some pointers and thoughts as to what might keep the barracks standing during the assault.

And then they wait, patiently, watching the bats dance along the starry sky, stood in front of the building along the snow as the moon shines down above.

A PQ to fortify the Barracks against the monsters!! Two spots are open <3

RE: the other side of paradise - Mabel - 02-03-2021

Considering Azrael’s inclinations towards helping her (and because she was naturally very nosey and wanted to see what they were up to), Mabel took a turn towards the barracks. She wasn’t overly accustomed to the building – knew of its existence – but hadn’t ever stepped inside. Not a soldier nor defender by any stretch of the imagination, the girl was usually in the mode to take care of herself, and that was about it.

But they needed to wage somewhat of a semblance, of an effort, in this bizarre, ominous, upcoming sprawl together – so she did just that.

[say]“Azrael,”[/say] she enlightened, a lighter tone for a favored individual. [say]“I can help if you need it.”[/say] With what, she wasn’t quite sure; but the youth had helped her family, up until their deaths, prepare for LongNight since she was small, tiny, and remembered how to be quiet in the midst of threatening claw and dastardly wakes. She had no gifts to speak of, and could only barely handle a dagger; but with direction might come some manner of ability.

RE: the other side of paradise - Henry - 02-06-2021

Henry's coming along with a large horse-drawn wagon of supplies himself, with as much tools and equipment he can provide that will prove useful in the measures of fortification. He's thought of a few of his own ideas to offer up, should they be warranted, but if he's honest he's not expecting to take up much charge in this endeavor. He's simply here to help and ensure success. Like hell he was going to come empty-handed, though.

So when he arrives with his wagon in tow, keeping the workhorse reined in, he's not expecting to find Mabel and... a kid? He brings the horse to a stop and smiles genuinely at the pair.

[say]"Hello! Nice to see you again, Mabel? I'm here to help with the barracks, if you guys will have me,"[/say] He lifts his brows, glancing at the child, [say]"I'm Henry."[/say] They seem vaguely familiar, and he realizes they're probably from the Grounds, though he doesn't remember where he's seen them. [say]"I brought as much as I could. Hopefully this will help... what are the plans?"[/say]

RE: the other side of paradise - Azrael - 02-06-2021

Mabel is the first to arrive, greeted with a bright fanged smile and excitement in the form of their hands clasping together before them just as a mirror image of what Bastien had done before. “[say]Hi Mabel![/say]” They chime in greeting, slipping over toward the supplies they’d brought. “[say]I do need it.[/say]” They answer brightly, despite the daunting task ahead.

But someone else shows as well, someone they vaguely recognize but had never spoken to before, but that doesn’t stop Azrael from offering just as bright of a smile in greeting. “[say]Hi Henry, we’d love to have your help.[/say]” They offer, brandishing a wave toward the man, tottering over toward the wagon to see what he’d brought. “[say]These will be very useful.[/say]” They offer, giving Henry another bright grin, internally chastising themself for having missed a few of the items Henry had brought.

Oh well, they were all there, might as well get started, yeah?

So they drift back over toward the entrance of the Barracks, moving to step on one of the steps to become a bit taller as they list out the plans. “[say]Sooo, I did a lot of research and some mock-ups on what would be good to do here. First things first is boarding up the windows and all the entrances except for the main entrance.[/say]” That was the common theme the LongNight preppers had outlined in all the things Azrael had read. “[say]So I have boards and nails and snow moss that we can stuff between the window and the boards to keep the sound out.[/say]”

With a bright grin shot their companions’ way, they slip over to grab some of the snow moss and the boards and nails to get started.

First task is boarding up windows and entrances except the main one and stuffing it with snow moss!

No post order <3

RE: the other side of paradise - Mabel - 02-06-2021

The drawing of a wagon distracted her, wheels pressing into stone and dirt causing a turn of her head, a shift of curiosity, before ensuing a snort from her lungs at the sight of Henry. Features rendered into a solid, stoic nod, but the ensuing of her countenance also portrayed an “oh, it’s you again” display. It was the only greeting she’d assemble.

Then she listened to Azrael and their plans; nothing different from what they’d all done before. Boarded up windows so the monsters couldn’t peer in. Snow moss to keep the sound of their movements, their existences, away. The youth gave a nod, indicating her understanding, second-nature, old habits, before grabbing hold of some of the offered boards, the nails, and a hammer.

Opening the door, glancing back and forth at the first set of windows in the front, clearly planning area, parlor, she headed there, wooden boards placed and aligned, leaving some space to stuff moss within before nailing them – applying efforts subsequently in the other regions.

RE: the other side of paradise - Henry - 02-08-2021

[say]Well, okay then. "Don't look so excited to see me,"[/say] He grumbles humorously.

He lets his focus return to Azrael, though, who is far more friendly by the way. He's a bit impressed with their talk of research and attention to detail, which is evident with the gentle raise of his browline and smaller smile. [say]"No problem, boss,"[/say] he grins with a dutiful nod and goes to gather materials he'll need to board up entryways. Larger planks, nails, a hammer.

Henry's good with his hands. Being a third generation farmer that grew up in the Grounds, he has plenty of experience with this sort of stuff. Not to say he can't fuck up - anything is possible and he can be a bit clumsy sometimes - but as he gets to work, he's very confident about it all.

So confident, in fact, he whistles a tune as he goes.

Henry will board up the extra entryways and whistle thiiiis:

i'm not sorry

RE: the other side of paradise - Azrael - 02-08-2021

Mabel picks up the boards and nails, and she has a lot of success when it comes to nailing them into place, as she stuffs the snow moss in between the windows and the boards as well. She manages to get the first set of windows and the rest in the parlor that need to be done. Henry also has some great success in his attempts, perhaps due to the fact that they’re all naturals and they’ve done this for nearly their whole lives. Either way, it goes well, Henry’s success in boarding up the entryways and whistling along.

Azrael, however, doesn’t have as good of luck. And it’s likely because their height hasn’t quite caught up with them just yet – the young demi-god delegated to dragging a little step stool around to the other windows to try and board them up. They manage to get one board up before they can’t reach the top regardless of how much they try. The slip off the edge, falling to the floor perfectly in time with a high point of Henry’s whistling, to laugh in their embarrassment before they pick themself up off the floor. “[say]Maybe someone could help finish this window and I’ll start on the snow moss on the floor?[/say]”

And then they get started.

Everyone did well except Azrael!! They’re going to start on the snow moss but could use some help getting the window they were working on boarded up, the rest can start on filling the floor with snow moss!

RE: the other side of paradise - Mabel - 02-09-2021

Mabel gave no other reaction to Henry’s grumble other than a blank, unimpressed stare, before venturing off to her required task. Proud and accomplished with her venture, having done this numerous, numerous times, the youth wiped her hands clean with a haughty glance in Henry’s direction – hoping to have found him floundering or failing in his pursuits.

Then frowning when he began an obnoxious whistle, and successfully navigated around the barracks.

Rolling her eyes, Mabel hastened back towards Azrael anyway, the crashing decibel attracting her attention. At least the demigod laughed, as there’d been a moment of panic at the loud sound (she made no move to pretend it hadn’t highlighted something in the back of her mind; the sweeping slant of a wave, the tumble, the roar of the ocean bellowing in her ears); and then she nodded – moving forward, swallowing down bile that wasn’t there. [say]“I can finish the window.”[/say] And then she set to work, hands grasping, intending to go about it the same as she’d done before.

RE: the other side of paradise - Henry - 02-09-2021

Henry is absolutely, irrevocably, unperturbed by any disapproving look Mabel might shoot towards him. Her eyes may be daggers boring holes into the back of his head, and he even turns to glance up at her over his shoulder because he can actually feel her eyes on him, but he's trying not to be bogged down by everything today. Even if, in the back of his mind, he is worried about how this will all play out.

He only ceases whistling when he hears the sound of someone fall over. He draws back from the finishing touches of his work, stuffing snow moss into the crevices, to see what had happened. At the sound of Azrael's laughter and seeing that Mabel has come to their rescue, Henry lets out an amused huff of relief.

Snow moss already handy, Henry goes to assist Azrael with lining the floor. As they go, he glances over and attempts to make a bit of conversation, perhaps another effort to keep things light. [say]"So, are you Bastien's kid? You look a bit like him."[/say] Henry didn't know Bastien super well but, after some thought, this is the conclusion he's drawn.

Henry helps with the snow moss in the floors and tries to make friends! :D

RE: the other side of paradise - Azrael - 02-10-2021

Mabel agrees to finish the window for them, and they offer her a bright fanged smile in thanks. “[say]Thank you Mabel![/say]” They chime, smoothing down their shirt from the dust that might have collected itself onto them as they focus on the next task they have. Mabel, for whatever reason, finds difficulty in boarding up the window – perhaps because of the space she attempts to nail the board into has rotted somewhat and won’t hold the nail, the board slipping constantly. It’s held in on one end but the other tends to swing down without having anything to hold it in.

Henry on the other hand, is probably the most successful of the trio, stuffing snow moss beneath the floor boards, walking along the tops of the floor to find where it squeaks and it needs more. He makes quick work of it while it takes Azrael some time to fit them in – whether it’s because they’re a bit of a perfectionist versus just doing enough to get the job done, it’s hard to say. At least they haven’t fallen down again.

They continue to work, however, as Henry’s question reaches them and their dark eyes lift to spot the man. “[say]I am![/say]” They chime, flashing a bright smile. “[say]Bastien’s my father and Rexanna was my mother. She used to be Queen and she died last LongNight.[/say]” They don’t have hardly any memories of their mother, after all – she had died just after they were created and their memories were fuzzy and faded, if there at all.

We didn’t do so hot, fam. KEEP ON KEEPIN’ ON <3

RE: the other side of paradise - Mabel - 02-10-2021

For all the thanks, it scarcely mattered; the board gave her issue as well. Huffing, ignoring the questions flickering around her, since they weren’t directed at her anyway, she went to retrieve a new board. There was no point leaving the rotted one there, and it would only give them future issues and problems further down the road. With the stature of a professional farmgirl, she used the back of her hammer to pry the decayed fixture away, watching it fall to pathetic pieces along the floor.

Thereafter, she could adhere the newest one, replacing in fluid motions. Working in silence, save for the crack and split of the timber, she then attempted what they’d been striving towards from the beginning. [say]“There,”[/say] she announced, hoping that would seal the deal.

--

[say]Mabel replaces the rotten board with a new one, and attempts to nail things down properly this time.[/say]

RE: the other side of paradise - Henry - 02-12-2021

Henry's got this. LongNight preparations? He might as well be a professional, a veteran! So it's not too big a deal for him to survey everything else, lending assistance to Azrael where it might be needed {or wanted}. There's a bit of surprise at Mabel's improvisation in lieu of the Very Terrible Window™️. She seems to be handling herself well in spite of the challenges so, he doesn't bother offending her by offering his help.

Shifting his attentions back to Azrael as they answer his question, he replies, [say]"I'm sorry to hear that.."[/say] he remembers Rexanna. He was never really in close proximity to her most of the time, though. [say]"I wish I had known her better. But I bet she would be proud of you."[/say] He offers a small, kind smile. Azrael seemed to have a very good head on their shoulders.

Diligently, he keeps working along at things, doing his best to make sure it's all done efficiently. He's done this every year and it's always counted but this time feels a little more... grave. For lack of a better term.

Henry keeps at it! Or does whatever else is needed of him.

RE: the other side of paradise - Azrael - 02-12-2021

The new board is a good touch, aside from the attempts to hammer it in. For whatever reason, evidently this window is cursed. Because a few of the nails go in well and as Mabel goes to hammer the last of the nails in, she ends up somehow smashing her finger underneath the hammer, pinning it for a moment between the nail and the wood. Luckily that she’s Ascended and can’t feel it, once she gets her finger unstuck, the nails should go in smoothly.

Henry does probably the best of the trio yet again, stuffing snow moss under the floorboards easily and with far more speed than Azrael has managed thus far. Perhaps it’s because Henry is far more experienced with lacing the snow moss under the floorboards and have made a decent ritual of it all. Regardless, Henry manages to finish up his section of it, and then he’s free to move onto draping fabric over the cracks from the snow moss.

"[say]Thank you![/say]" They say to Henry's comment of their mother, flashing the boy a smile. However, Azrael is quite slow at getting the snow moss in their spaces under the floorboard, but they have a small section they attempt to fill that suddenly interrupts a nest of spiders that come crawling out from the floorboards. Grimacing, Azrael tries to stuff snow moss into the space to keep the spiders from crawling out at them again, and aims to finish their corner.

Mabel accidentally pins her finger to the board with the nail, Henry does the best of them and manages to get his task done and now he can start draping any cracks with some fabric! Azrael finds a nest of spiders and tries to finish their corner! Last round <3

RE: the other side of paradise - Mabel - 02-13-2021

It was a good thing Mabel could no longer feel pain – the ricochet of the pinning manifestations, of smashing her finger against nail and board, would’ve sent a howl running through her chest. Instead, she hissed something feral and cursing, quietly muttering under her breath. [say]“Piece of shit,”[/say] might’ve echoed in the rather savage interludes, until she managed to eventually withdraw her finger from the complexities. Fuck that window in particular, apparently.

Snarling, she retreated from its regions once everything was finished, ignoring the trail of fluid dripping from the digit, stomping over, and grabbing hold of some more snow moss, stuffing wherever it was still required.

[say]Mabel finishes up with the window and tries to stuff more snow moss around the building.[/say]
