sledgehammer fun time - Wessex - 08-06-2021

With Azrael’s plans in hand, Wessex is well aware of the amount of stone and other materials they’ll need to prepare before beginning the actual renovations. And with a sigh, the General places a note on the Notice Board at the Temple, asking for volunteers to help gather stones from the ruins and the other necessities for building. Personally, she's ready for the opportunity to just smash some shit if the opportunity arises.

She does, at least, have the foresight to arrange for bunches of carts to be at the edge of the Ruins. And she's sent notes ahead to various artisans and crafters in the Grounds, so that they might have tools and other items ready when the time comes.

Without the use of magic, they’ll have to do it all by hand. It wouldn’t be impossible, but it would be a long project. Wessex waits at twilight at the edge of the dilapidated, leaning on the handle of a sledge hammer, half-fallen buildings, trying to identify which ones might be safest to take from.

------------------------

This is a PQ to get the materials to expand/rebuild the Barracks! No participant limit. You may say you've seen a posting on the Notice Board.

Please have your character arriving and choosing either House A or House B. Thanks!

RE: sledgehammer fun time - Varus - 08-06-2021

There's one spot in the Ruins that Varus intends to keep clear of any material scrapping. And luckily for him, the spot that Wessex has chosen is quite a ways off from it. So he arrives happily, flashing a bright grin to the demigod as he steps up beside one of the empty carts, peering into the two homes. There was once a time where he’d known some of those that lived on this street, but that was long ago, and now it could be used for something to benefit them all. He’s sure they’d understand if they were here to see it.

“[say]Think I’ll get started over here, General.[/say]” He offers, picking up a hammer, the metal of his hand clinking against the wood of the handle as he picks it up and heads toward one of the houses, ready to get to work to gather stone and brick they can use for the expansion on the Barracks.

Varus picks house B and gets to work!

RE: sledgehammer fun time - Cameron - 08-07-2021

[say]"I'm wimpy, but I'm here to help,"[/say] Cam said with a self-deprecating laugh, showing up behind Varus. It was true, to an extent. Cam wasn't accustomed to hard manual labor, but they also hadn't fully explored yet how much Ascending had enhanced their body. They might not be particularly strong, but they wouldn't tire and couldn't really hurt themself, and that gave them an advantage over Old Cam.

[say]"We're picking a house to tear down?"[/say] They'd done something sort of like this at Mabel's, so it wasn't completely beyond their experience. [say]"I'll go with this one, then."[/say]

They headed for the house Varus hadn't picked and looked up at it, uncertain where to start. Maybe ... with the door? Grabbing a hammer -- a bit awkwardly -- Cam started trying to pry the old door off its rusted hinges.

---------

Cam will pick House A.

RE: sledgehammer fun time - Wessex - 08-09-2021

Offering a thankful wave and a silent nod to the first volunteer, it isn't long before they're joined by an unexpected second.[say] “Any and all help is appreciated,”[/say] Wessex quickly reassures them, though while she feels confident that Varus can handle himself in the task for the moment, she isn’t so sure of Cameron. So with the two of them off to their respective buildings, she calls out further instructions.[say] “Let’s keep it simple for now and gather any easily picked up stone from the surrounding area and put it in the carts. Feel free to break any bigger slabs lying on the ground.”[/say] The carts are attached to horses, which are waiting patiently nearby. When they’re full, they’ll be towed over to the Barracks, unloaded, and returned for the next trip.

She doesn’t have any idea how long this will take, so the Wraith picks up her sledgehammer and starts to target anything big and pick-upable on the ground, the sharp ringing of metal on rock resounding through the area, followed occasionally by some lound cracks once the pieces split.

---------------

Have at it! Let's start with gathering stone at the base of the houses for now.

RE: sledgehammer fun time - Varus - 08-10-2021

A bright fanged smile is given to Cam as they arrive, briefly before Varus is slipping toward the house he’s chosen. He can hear Wessex from where he inspects the ground and the surrounding building, casting a glance over his shoulder back toward her through a curtain of growing dark hair, much of which he brushes back with the metal hand. “[say]On it.[/say]” He confirms, picking up a few of the loose pieces before focusing on the bigger ones trapped halfway in the ground poking out that needed to be broken down.

To these he takes his hammer to it, the plinking and ringing of metal that echoes through the house around them all, and once Varus has broken up a decent pile, he’ll pick it all up and put it in the little wheelbarrow he’d dragged over to his house.

Varus picks up the looser pieces before breaking into the bigger slabs!

RE: sledgehammer fun time - Cameron - 08-10-2021

[say]"That works!"[/say] Cam said cheerfully, giving up on their not-very-successful attempts at the door to start picking up and hauling stone. It was easier than they had expected, with their Ascended muscles unable to get sore or tired. Neat. Maybe they could be more helpful than they'd thought.

After taking a pause to try and work out an efficient method, they began by grabbing a wheelbarrow, then started gathering smaller stones to fill it. Once they'd grabbed everything loose, they picked up a hammer and tried to copy Wessex and Varus' work, swinging it at any pieces of stone they could potentially break and bring away.

Cam grabs what loose stone they can, then makes an attempt to break the larger slabs.

RE: sledgehammer fun time - Wessex - 08-11-2021

They’re nothing if not busy little robo-bees, the three of them gathering and breaking things until a cart is full. Unfortunately for Varus, he had a small mishap during his collecting - maybe it was all the hair in his eyes? - and his hammer slipped, smashing down on his pinky. It isn’t broken, and there isn’t any pain, but he might need to find a blacksmith later. Cam, for all their new Ascended muscles and lack of pain, may also feel a bit tired - but certainly not enough to stop them. Wessex just breaks shit too hard, and the first couple of breaks end up with more pulverized dust and gravel than useable pieces. But eventually, she, too, gets its right.

The horse’s owner is able to lead it to the Barracks site, where it will be unloaded. Which leaves them with one cart to fill and all the easily harvested stone already taken up.

So now it’s on to the bigger fish - the houses. Long since stripped of any glass or valuables, they’re sturdy shells that need to be taken apart from the top-down. Luckily for them, this one doesn’t really have a roof, so there’s nothing to collapse in on them. As the cart trundles away, Wessex turns to the two of them and gestures to House A.[say] “Alright, well, let’s see if we can’t safely dismantle this thing from the top down. Walls first, then let’s see if any beams can be salvaged.”[/say] Peering over at the house, she frowns slightly.[say] “I’d really like to take the walls as they are, so let’s try to get them at the mortar seams.”[/say]

Big try. Hey, worst comes to worst and they’ll just get lots more stone.

-----------------

Okaaaaaay let's try to take this house apart >.>

RE: sledgehammer fun time - Varus - 08-14-2021

The hammer slips as he swings it, crushing a bit of his pinky, and while there isn’t any pain and it isn’t broken, it still sends a sharp ringing of his sensors telling him to look at it. Huffing an annoyed sigh, he tries to keep his fingers out of the way for more of the hammering to break the slabs up, imagining that Isla could take a look at his finger when he made it back home.

For now, though, the one cart is taken and the rest of them can move onto the house. He steps up beside Cameron, flashing them a bright playful grin. “[say]Gonna have some fun with this one.[/say]” He murmurs, stepping into the house over toward the side where the mortar seams are, taking a chisel and yet another hammer, and works to break up the seams so that the wall can hopefully stay as they are.

Varus takes a chisel and a hammer to start breaking up the mortar seams!

RE: sledgehammer fun time - Cameron - 08-14-2021

[say]"Yeah, sure,"[/say] Cam said, a bit uncertainly: taking apart a house wasn't really their idea of fun, but they weren't going to argue with Varus. And hey, if he was enjoying himself, good for him. [say]"Let's see ..."[/say]

Fortunately, Varus had provided them with an idea of how to get the work done -- without his example, they would have spent a while just figuring out which tools to grab. But they took a hammer and chisel and started on the opposite end of the wall Varus was working on. [say]"I'll get this side."[/say]

They weren't sure how they were going to transport the wall in one piece once they'd detached it from the other walls, but hey, that was a problem for the other two to figure out. Right?

RE: sledgehammer fun time - Wessex - 08-19-2021

True, it’s a big undertaking for the three of them, but the only way to get it done is to get it done. With or without mistakes.

Varus has the bright idea of chiseling away at the seams, using their ancestor’s knowledge of stability (and it must be, to have endured over 300 years) to their advantage. And Wessex, while her idea was smart, in theory, and would have saved them a lot of time on part two of building the Barracks, just isn’t an architect. There’s really no way to get the wall down from the second story in one piece and if they’re going to build with it, it might as well be in new pieces.

She finds this out the hard way. In an attempt to catch the wall - or maybe just easily lower it down - she teleports herself to one of the remaining roof beams at the top, a thick loop of rope thrown over her shoulder. She ties it off and begins to lower herself to catch the wall, but the age of the mortar and the chiseling of Cam and Varus set the crumbling in motion. Wessex has a loop only around one corner when said corner breaks off entirely. No one’s hurt, but it’s clear that this strategy won’t work.

[say] “Hold for a second!”[/say] Wessex yells, then teleports to get the other cart. Might as well save them the effort of lugging it around. She unhitches it from the horse and brings the cart to underneath the wall, where it can catch much more, hopefully.[say] “Okay, have at it. Forget I said anything about getting it in one piece… that was dumb.”[/say] she yells back up at them again, before grabbing her own chisel and hammer and heading to an adjacent upper wall.

Between the three of them, they manage to get two out of the four walls down, and once it stops raining stones and other hard bits, the horse’s owner even pitches in to help gather the stray pieces. Once that cart trundles off, the other one returns and Wessex turns to Cam and Varus.[say] “How you doing? Need a break or anything?”[/say]

---------------------------

Take a break if yall want, then there are the two walls left. Just be careful, the floor on that side of the building looks a little unstable and there are some holes. Also a wasp nest in one corner :)

RE: sledgehammer fun time - Varus - 08-20-2021

It’s a thought that starts off well and with Cameron’s help – the Ascended offers them a bright fanged smile as they pick up on his train of thought quite well – he can’t help but to work quickly without the need of bodily fatigue and enough attention to keep his mental fatigue at bay. The wall starts to come down, but it breaks, and Wessex’s call has Varus gripping onto the wall with his metal hand and a clench to his jaw as he tries to keep the rest of it from tumbling down below until she’s ready for them to continue.

And when she gives the okay, he huffs a laugh. “[say]Shit happens.[/say]” He calls back through the wall to her, flashing a playful wink Cameron’s way. “[say]Well, let’s get on it then.[/say]” And it unleashes the ability for them to break down a fair amount of walls, before they’re taking a slight break as the cart trundles away and the next one rolls up. Varus takes the time to stretch out his arm, to rub at the space where his metal arm connects to the rest of him, the skin there a bit scarred and flaring with the motion of taking down the walls, sending his sensors a bit loud.

“[say]I’m good to continue.[/say]” He says after a moment, stepping into the rest of the house and readies his chisel and hammer to work at the seams again since it did so well the first time to break up the wall in easier pieces. He tries to be mindful of the flooring on that side, not wanting to plummet down a floor again as he had not that long before.

Varus gets back to work chiseling the seams of the next wall!

RE: sledgehammer fun time - Cameron - 08-21-2021

[say]"I'm good to keep going too,"[/say] Cam said, trying not to stare at Varus' metal arm. That was cool. But also looked like it hurt -- but it couldn't, if Ascended didn't feel pain. Cam wondered how he'd lost the arm, or if he'd chosen to replace it; probably the former, they figured. Then they tried not to put away their curiosity and return to the task at hand. [say]"Might as well get it all done at once."[/say]

Like Varus, they picked their way across the uncertain footing, wincing as the floor groaned under them. A fall probably wouldn't actually hurt them, they reminded themself, even if it did damage their body -- and it wasn't that far to fall, anyway. They grabbed their chisel and started working at the top of the next wall, more carefully this time. Sure, they probably couldn't take the wall down in one piece, but they might as well make the pieces as big as possible.

Cam starts on another wall seam, carefully navigating the unstable flooring.

RE: sledgehammer fun time - Wessex - 08-25-2021

For all their caution, Cameron’s luck is not great. A spot that looks safe is actually quite full of rot and the newly Ascended goes crashing through the floor to the, well - floor below. They are lucky in that they don’t land on anything that does them any further injury, other than what would normally have amounted to a lot of bruising and some scrapes. They won’t even really ‘feel’ it the way they used to.

[say] “Cam!”[/say] Wessex shouts at their unexpected disappearance.[say] “You alright?”[/say] She stops her demolition and scooches over to where they fell through, peering down to try and assess any damage.

Meanwhile, Varus has managed to avoid all of the holes in the ground, but the wasps have been disturbed by the chiseling and seem to be a little more active than before… nothing too dangerous right now, and of course the Ascended won’t feel any stings, but it might need to be taken care of.

The NPCs are busy loading the cart, but this is no easy work and they’re starting to grumble about being tired and dusty. With one ear on Cam and another ear on the outside helpers, Wessex says good naturedly to the two of them,[say] “I think we better wrap this up soon, or we’ll lose the carts and horses and you.”[/say]

------------------------

Cam rolled a 1 and fell through a hole in the floor :/
Varus has some wasps to look out for
The NPCs are grumbly

Just one more round left!

RE: sledgehammer fun time - Varus - 08-26-2021

The second that he hears Cameron start to go down, Varus abandons the chiseling to try and reach for them. “[say]Shit shit shit.[/say]” Comes the immediate utter. But it seems like Wessex has it handled and his ocean gaze drifts from Wessex back to the task at hand just in time for the wasps to come nearby and Varus growls a bit of frustration, reaching up with his metal hand to try and bat the wasps away in order to get toward the nest.

“[say]Lemme take care of this.[/say]” He rumbles, stepping over carefully to the wasp nest, hoping that he can use his metal arm to latch onto it without getting stung in his fleshier parts, in order to launch the nest far from the house. Provided it works, he focuses back on the demolition again.

Varus tries to help Cam before realizing Wessex has it under control and moves to take out the wasp problem by grabbing the nest with his metal hand and hoping he doesn’t get stung a whole bunch so that he can throw it far away from the house.
