[split] [split] unicorn wranglers - Harper - 09-05-2021

In the disorientation of it all, at least there is Aurelia's commanding voice and Adam's (far less so) to direct his attention from his soupy fate. One calloused hand reaches for Adam's, and pulls hard to ease himself from the mire. His bright grin is at odds with his dirty fate, appreciative of the man's assistance and more than willing to - quite literally - pull his own weight to make things a little easer. [say]"Thanks bud!"[/say] Grasping the ledge and trying to stand once more.

Raza's voice is a familiar drawl even before she says his name, and Harper turns over his shoulder to flash her a bright grin - at odds with the dirt smeared on his freckled cheeks. [say]"It's a date, Raz!"[/say] No sense in letting the chaos and stress dampen their spirits.

---

Harper grabs Adam's hand and uses the help to get up out of the mud, and waits to see who else might need help before doing anything.

RE: [split] [split] unicorn wranglers - Raza - 09-09-2021

Harper’s jovial response is unexpected, causing a sharp huff of laughter from the cynical Torcher. She just shakes her head as they reconnect with the group - horses, people, unicorns, et al. Goin’ through a mental inventory of her physical and mental feelin’s (and yes, she pats the lightnin’ trident and readjusts it to be more secure) Raza spaces out for a moment and lets herself - and her mount - go with the flow.

A vile gas bubble brings her back to her senses and she wrinkles her nose. Yuck. [say] “Have any of you been through this swamp before?”[/say] Turning in her seat to ask the others, Raza is only curious so much as she can predict what might jump out at her next.[say] “Or maybe know when we can make a safe camp for the night?”[/say]

RE: [split] [split] unicorn wranglers - Theo - 09-17-2021

Finding his feet and escaping the unicorns' trampling zone, Theo looked around for his horse, swearing under his breath. That had been a close one. One hoof in the wrong place -- one skull in the wrong place -- and no more Theo. That kind of danger wasn't what he'd expected when he signed up for this trip, and he wasn't happy about it.

[say]"I'm afraid I lack insight into such fetid geography,"[/say] Theo said, made snippy -- and pretentious -- by fear. [say]"We could always try asking the rats."[/say]

He trudged towards his horse, which sensed his bad mood and shied away. Glaring at the animal, Theo addressed it: [say]"Come here, you overgrown mammal."[/say]

RE: [split] [split] unicorn wranglers - Ray - 09-18-2021

[say]"There we go. Shhh."[/say] Ray stroked the lead mare's neck, still attempting to keep her calm. The herbalist kept an eye on the rest of the unicorn herd, trying to see if they were calming down as their leader did. Ray's own horse was another concern, and so she attempted to soothe them as well.

Adam seemed to have handled the situation with Harper thankfully. Raza and Theo brought up a valid concern. Eyeing their surroundings with a sigh, Ray spoke. [/say]"I'm not familiar with the area but I do know how to make a camp. I've spent many nights out in the wilderness."[/say] The mud beneath her squelched and Ray's face scrunched up. [say]"I'd say our first task would be to find a dry patch of ground if we can."[/say]

[say]Ray continues to soothe the lead mare and her own horse. She suggests they attempt to find a dryer patch of ground to make camp. [/say]

RE: [split] [split] unicorn wranglers - Adam - 09-27-2021

[say]"Yeah, you're welcome."[/say] Adam said with a nod, lifting Harper up and out of the mud with a few steps backwards (and a significant use of his upgrade to make himself heavier). Once he was out, Adam directed his attention back to the group and the unicorns.

A camp, then. Not a necessity for himself, but it was nicely human and distracting, so he busied himself going about and finding some dry sticks and leaves to make a fire. Again, not for himself (in fact he'd be staying as far away as possible). As he went with them he hovered over the mud, not wanting his boots to get any more ruined than they already were.

Adam comes along with the group, gathering dry sticks/leaves to use as tinder for a fire for them and floating above the mud.

RE: [split] [split] unicorn wranglers - Harper - 09-27-2021

They cluster back together easily enough considering the disastrous earlier moments. Harper keeps a keen eye on their unicorn charges, relieved to see all accounted for and with their human tenders whole and hale beside them. Casting an eye to the horizon where the sun is beginning to sink, Harper hums softly in contemplation. They could continue on for a while longer, but not much more, and then they’d be scrambling to make camp adequately in the fading light. Ray’s suggestion is therefore one he can agree to, and he’s grateful for the other councilwoman’s presence.

[say]“Let’s regroup and set up camp, the unicorns need some time to decompress and we need the daylight while it’s here.”[/say] Seeing Adam already grabbing sticks, Harper doles out the rest of the boxes in his mind to accomplish a secure base for the night. [say]“Ray, you’ve had the best luck with the unicorns. If you’ll help keep an eye on mine, I’ll scout for a good spot from above.”[/say] Their horses were far more hardy and less inclined to spook, so he ground ties his steed and hands over his unicorn to Ray. [say]“Maybe lead them to a good place to graze? Not too far in case the rats come back. Raza, can you provide another pair of hands?”[/say] Let the unicorns’ anxieties ease with the opportunity to eat, and Harper is confident the two women can handle the gaggle of horses together.

Walking past Theo and Adam as he readies to shift, Harper takes into consideration Theo’s dangerous brush with injury earlier, and hopes to ease that as well. [say]“Theo, think you can grab some materials to make a rudimentary perimeter fence? Nothing fancy, just enough to dissuade the unicorns from wandering if one of them gets free. We’ll set up a watch, but can’t be too careful.”[/say] Harper delivers a warm, encouraging smile to try and raise the man’s spirits before turning to Adam and winking. [say]“And you’re already doing great, my man. I’ll go find us the best nearby spot.”[/say] And then he’s shifting, feathers overtaking skin as he shoots into the sky to find a suitable patch of ground to lay for the night.

[say]- - -

Round one: let’s set up camp! You have your instructions:

- Ray and Raza, keep the unicorns together and let them calm down, maybe find a good place to graze?
- Theo, start grabbing longer branches and materials to create a rudimentary perimeter fence
- Adam keep foraging for fire material![/say]

RE: [split] [split] unicorn wranglers - Ray - 09-27-2021

Ray is pleased that the unicorns are responding favorably to her efforts. The calmer they are, the easier this entire trip will be. She takes Harper's unicorn with a nod, running a hand over the creature's neck soothingly. [say]"Come with me lovely"[/say], the herbalist croons as she begins to lead the unicorn along with the others.

[say]"Raza will you keep an eye out? I'm going to focus on getting these guys settled and grazing."[/say] Assuming that the other woman agrees, Ray leads the group of unicorns to an area with promising looking grass and flora to graze on. The entire time she continues to murmurer to them in a low and calm tone. The herbalist's arm reaches out and strokes the neck of any that look nervous, attempting to soothe them further.

[say]Ray takes Harper's unicorn and asks Raza to keep an eye out for rats. She then leads the unicorns over to a spot to graze while continuing to try and calm them. [/say]

RE: [split] [split] unicorn wranglers - Adam - 09-28-2021

Adam had done many years out on the roads in his old world and knew what you needed to set up a camp. As ironic as it was to be an Ascended collecting firewood (there was a joke there somewhere; he kept tossing around the situation in his head trying to find it), he continued his work vigilantly, gathering up many more sticks and leaves that would do.

Privately, he did look about for any mushrooms or flowers that looked like they might give off a promising smoke in a fire, but ultimately gave up the hunt for two reasons: he couldn't enjoy it himself if they did, and he supposed he didn't want to poison the group. That mission over, Adam would bring the gathered items and place them down in the centre of the camp once it was established.

Adam collects enough fire wood and so on and puts it down in the centre of the camp area.

RE: [split] [split] unicorn wranglers - Theo - 09-30-2021

Oh, good, they were camping for the night. Theo was always glad to stop working and laze about -- oh. Harper wanted him to actually do something. Damn. Dragging himself out of his done-for-the-day mindset, Theo hopped off his horse and went looking for branches or ... whatever. He supposed they could lash some branches together with rope (they had rope, right?) to keep the unicorns in. That would certainly be more convenient than rounding them all up again in the morning.

Theo searched the nearby trees for long, relatively straight branches that he could either break off or cut down with his belt knife. If he were lucky, he might even find some on the ground, ready to use.

Theo looks for branches to use in constructing a fence!

RE: [split] [split] unicorn wranglers - Raza - 10-06-2021

[say] “Yep, any excuse t’get my feet on the ground again,”[/say] the barkeep readily agrees, though it takes her longer than anticipated to get her legs to one side and slide on down the saddle of her horse. The mare, for once, is glad to put her head down and is quickly grazing, while Raza does a tentative stretch. The ache in her legs is worse today, but she knows that if she doesn’t work through it, it’ll be unbearable tomorrow.

Keeping her trident in front of her, Raza starts to walk a perimeter around Ray, the unicorns, and the rest of their horses. Every now and then she stops and stares quietly into the dark, listening, trying to determine if what she hears is friend or foe.

[say] “Y’ever been this far from Torchline?”[/say] she asks Ray once she comes back round to the group. It’s clear Raza hasn’t. She ain’t one for the sea, which for awhile, was the only way out

RE: [split] [split] unicorn wranglers - Harper - 10-14-2021

Harper gives Ray and Raza a grateful smile as the councilwoman takes his steed and attached unicorn. Unfortunately there’s not much ground to be found around them that’s any more hospitable for them to set up for the night. When his own search radius has gone too far, he turns back to fly back to the group, and takes stock from above.

Ray and Raza handle the large group of animals flawlessly, and they eventually settle and begin to graze. The tension from the fight before seeping out and away from the animals, leaving them placid and content.

Theo and Adam find wood aplenty for both their projects, though the fire needs to be lit and the fence constructed. Harper dives down and shifts before hitting the ground, landing near the two women. [say]“Bad news gang, no better ground to be seen. We’ll have to make do here.”[/say] With a gentle squeeze of Raza’s shoulder in idle tactility, he walks over to Adam. [say]“Here, I’ll start the fire instead. Can you help Theo with the fence?”[/say] They surely wouldn’t be alone out here, and it would help keep whatever was out in the darkening woods at bay.

[say] “The horses look like they’re doing good, maybe we can start laying down boughs for bed rolls?”[/say] He’d leave the organization of that to Ray and Raza, confident they’d juggle keeping the horses bunched up with preparing materials to ensure nobody would be damp sleeping on the ground overnight.

- - -

Every but Harper rolled well haha. New tasks are out!

- Harper will be attempting to start a fire
- Adam and Theo you’ve got plenty of materials, now start building that fence!
- Ray and Raza, time to lay some boughs down for a dry spot to put bedrolls on, but make sure the horses and unicorns don’t wander!

RE: [split] [split] unicorn wranglers - Adam - 10-14-2021

Thankfully, he wasn't assigned fire duty. Adam didn't fancy going up in flames right away, when it wouldn't even be dramatically appropriate for it. He gladly jumped up and got to work on the fence, although as soon as he was turned from Harper he may have rolled his eyes - he'd spent a lot of his life camping out in the wild, and he'd never gone so far as to build a fence. Especially not with so many of them.

But hey, he wasn't the boss here. Finding the biggest sticks he put them into the ground facing up as the base poles, then began to wind and balance thinner pieces of wood between them. It was not the sturdiest construction and certainly not the prettiest, but he didn't know what else he could make. [say]"This isn't really gonna keep much out, y'know. It's probably better to just have someone on watch. Like, the Unicorns aren't gonna just stay in cos of this either..."[/say] He said as he turned back to the group.

Adam builds a fence~ (but also whines about it)

RE: [split] [split] unicorn wranglers - Ray - 10-14-2021

[say]"Sounds like a plan."[/say] Ray sets to work, starting by securing the unicorns and horses, calling Raza over. [say]"Can you give me a hand with this real quick?"[/say] Assuming Raza joins her, Ray takes some string and ties it to the trees in a circular area, leading the equines in. It's not a true fence, but it's enough of a boundary that it might make them pause long enough for her to catch any that try to escape.

That taken care of, the Attuned begins to lay the boughs down on the most even and driest ground she can find. Laying a bedroll on a bumpy or soaked bough would be uncomfortable to say the least.

[say]Ray asks Raza to come help her secure the equines. She's tying a string along the trees in a circle and leading them in. The goal is to hopefully make the equines pause long enough in escaping that they can be caught. Ray then starts to lay down the boughs.[/say]

RE: [split] [split] unicorn wranglers - Theo - 10-14-2021

[say]"I've been far from Torchline, but I can't say the wilderness is my preferred environment,"[/say] Theo says, catching Raza's question. He's pretty strictly a city boy, especially after growing up in Halo, where the only place to explore would be the icy, miserable tundra. Of course, he wouldn't admit to being from Halo if anyone asked; he's still pretending to be an Outlander. But there's no need to volunteer that information right now. The less he says, the less likely he is to get caught in a lie -- a rule that Theo sometimes has trouble obeying.

He groans as Harper assigns him to fence duty with Adam. Hasn't he done enough just by gathering the branches? Eyeing Adam's attempts, he makes his own, moving slowly, trying to make it look as if he's taking great care with his work when he's actually just hoping Adam will get more of it done first.

Theo works on the fence! (Slowly.)
