The mermanta merely regarded the raven with calm impassivity while she croaked and flapped, unmoved by either her display or her words. There was a sense in the bond of steadfast certainty, as enduring as the sea, and it did not feel like he would break his vows of silence anytime soon.
He watched her flap up to the rooftop, her dark shape almost lost in the lengthening shadows at that distance.
I will wait for you to approach me again, he said simply, the thread of amusement lingering from their earlier conversation. I am easier to recognize at a distance. There weren't many other merfolk with manta halves in the ocean, and none that he knew of with gold tattooing tracing their scars and long silver-steel hair.
He nodded a final time and then ducked back under the water, shifting fully into his manta form to begin the swim through the canals and home to the sea.
