i'm a soldier who's returning half her weight - Maeve - 11-24-2022

It takes her longer than she cares to admit to make her way to Edmund. Not because she wanted to stay away, but simply because she needed a chance to rest. She wasn't like the others. The Nightshade needed time. Not only to recover, but to organize things in Torchline. Only when she was sure they could handle her absence, knowing it would take time to travel back, did she depart from the Court with a promise to Harper to return home with their son soon.

She crosses into the refuge, Aidon soaring above her, ever watchful and attentive now that the world was once more in chaos. Her steps are slow and measured, but aside from the bit of bandages that can be seen wrapping around her shoulders and back above the collar of her cloak, she seems unscathed apart from a few scratches on her face. Unsure of where exactly her son is, Maeve simply walks, planning on checking the little abode she secured for him when he moved here.

Knocking lightly on the door, Maeve draws in a deep breath, wincing as it stretches the still healing skin on her back and waits.

Edmund startles when the knocking reached his ears. The young teen had been sipping tea and watching the birds outside his window. After playing with the other kids all day, Edmund had grown tired and retreated to his little home for some peace and quiet.

As such, he wasn't expecting company. If this hadn't been the haven, he'd have been wary. Given that that was exactly where he was, Edmund instead jumps up and walks over to door calmly. Opening the door slightly and poising to ask who was present, the boy spots his mom.

[say]"Mummy!"[/say] The door bangs open fully as Edmund leaps out to hug Maeve. When he sees the injuries however, his hug goes from tight to barely present. His arms remain around her but it's with great care that he keeps his weight off of her. [say]"Mummy, are you ok? You don't look okay."[/say] The Abandoned's eyes can his mum worriedly.

She catches him in her arms with a soft grunt, holding her son close, breathing in deeply the scent that clings to his hair. Tea, parchment, and the lingering smell of embers in the fireplace that is ever present when he's near. Her heart squeezes to hear his voice, the concern coloring his words as he loosens his grip on her and draws back, studying her the same way that Harper had done when she first arrived home. [say]"I'm fine. Just sore. Harper made sure that I was patched up properly."[/say] She reassures him, hating to see him worried and doing her best to chase it away with a gentle hand through his hair.

[say]"It's all over, starlight. You can come home."[/say] Maeve murmurs, hand cupping his cheek, thumb brushing over his skin lightly. He was growing more and more by the day. While it had only been weeks since she last saw her son, it felt like years had passed, the boy having surely grown in the time they were apart.

Edmund bit his lip, unconvinced. Patched up didn't mean ok. Especially not when his mum was clearly still in pain, not just sore. [say]"If you say so, Mummy."[/say]The young teen relented, agreeing to disagree.

The hand in his hair does wonders to soothe his nerves, and Edmund finds his concerned look melting into a soft smile. His yes brighten as his mum delivers the good news. [say]"I can? Oh thank Lady Safrin. Is everyone ok? Is Torchline ok?"[/say] The young teen wasn't so naive as to think there hadn't been casualties. But hopefully the devastation was minimal. They'd had Safrin to protect them after all! There was no way she'd allow her sworn region to be destroyed.
